I recently saw a friend post her delivery from Ridges a few weeks ago and was intrigued. Churros and ice cream, delivered!? Have I been living under a rock? I have been following this food truck for a while now on Instagram. Was happy that they ended up in Covina one day. I was really excited to try it. I ordered the cinnamon sugar sundae. The cashier who took my order was really nice. The person who made my order looked like he really didn't want to be there. Might be coincidence that there was something in his eye or something and I looked at him at the wrong moment, but it looked like he rolled his eyes when I asked him for extra spoon and napkins. It's well balanced, and I don't think it's particularly sweet. We have tried the Nutella Nut Churro Sundae as well, but it tasted a bit plain to me. The crunchiness of the nuts also didn't seem to pair well with the churro's texture. The Nutella's soft texture balanced it well, though. I had never heard of the Ridges Churro Bar truck until we saw them at the Best Bites food truck roundup in Lakewood a few weeks ago. We were standing in line at another truck with our two very patient toddlers when a smiling lady comes up to me and asks me if she could give them a concoction of their expertise. The skeptic in me was on guard, but I quickly saw her shirt or maybe it was an apron. Then our girls started jumping with joy over it. Geeze, how could I turn it down?! Like a good mum I sat them down at a picnic table and let them dig in. They loved the churro and offered me a few bites. So good... Was it worth the hunt? You'll find out! Before Pokemon Go came out, my boyfriend and I were planning on checking out the very first OC Night Market in 2016. We were strictly going to eat all the yummy foods we could devour. One in particular was Ridges. We were so ready and excited to try Ridges, but were quickly turned off by the humongous line. If I knew that lines would be this crazy for a cinnamon stick in ice cream, I would have ate my dessert before my dinner. So I guess it wasn't love at first sight. After several months past, my boyfriend and I kept thinking about our second love with Ridges. My boyfriend surprised me and brought me to the Ridges truck in Little Tokyo! I was so excited, but at the same time, distracted by catching Pokemon. How could you not? They have so many great ones there! Anyway, back to the review. Ridges was surrounded by all of these crafty booths, hiding on the side, and get this, we were their only customers!! Hollah! The menu only had four options available that day, which is great for an indecisive person like me. Here are my reviews on the two cups of heaven we ordered: 1. Salted Caramel - 4.5/5 - The hint of saltiness from the caramel really brings out the sweetness from the churro. The ice cream is also topped with corn flakes and drizzled with caramel. It adds a nice crunch and added sweetness to the ice cream. It's really good! 2. Fruity Pebbles - 2.5/5 - Also drizzled with caramel, but the Fruity Pebbles tasted too sweet for me. The photos from Instagram made this selection seem like "a must get" flavor, but it's really only good for photos. Final thoughts - It was a struggle to finally go on our first date, but we eventually made it. I'd say everyone should go for the Salted Caramel. I love churros, I love ice cream, and I love the aesthetic-fueled turn that the food service industry is taking even if it's temporary. That being the case, I fully expected to love Ridges Churro Bar. Given the hype of premium churros these days Ridges could probably get away with charging $10.00 for a sundae. Fortunately, they don't, and my churro sundaes were a reasonable $7.00 each. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? So I'm honestly not sure what I was expecting, but what I got was two churros stuck in ice cream with some toppings in the mix. The churro is made fresh out of the fryer, rolled into customize blend of sugar/grounded-up fruity pebbles/cinammon, toasted almonds, and inserted into small plastic cup of vanilla ice cream. Crumbs from the churros are added as toppings. I have to admit, two colorful tubular churros sticking out of sundae is an amazing sight. It looks like a colorful twin tower of deliciousness (just check out my pic). The churros themselves are super sugary, crisp and moist inside. Ridges' IG game is on point! Because of their fabulously vibrant and well-composed photos, I knew I had to try. Ridges' steez is kind of like Afters Ice Cream's - very appealing to young folks and I mean sticking cereal on everything is a great idea! I ordered a Fruity Pebble Churro - for just $1 more, you can get the sundae but I didn't have even stomach space. I like the cereal/churro combo - the fruity pebbles added sweetness and crunchier texture (no one likes a soggy churro!) However, I don't think they're better than Papillon in Glendale. Papillon's churros toppings are primarily traditional (think nutella, caramel, etc) which works better because it lets the churros shine more. Also, Papllon's Churros just tasted more fresh. I love churros and I love ice cream. Put them together and you get... perfection. Ridges is truly delicious! I found them a couple of times in my city and I had to get it! I've tried the Fruity pebbles and the Salted Caramel so far. They are AMAZING!! And also super aesthetic! I really loved both flavors but if I were to choose I'd probably pick the salted caramel as the favorite because I personally think the fruity pebbles are a bit too sweet for me. I'm a huge fan of milk and cereal ice cream, so the ice cream sundaes with cereal toppings is a huuge plus!! The churros were delicious and crunchy and weren't overwhelmingly sweet. They are a bit on the pricier side ($7+ for sundaes) but it is totally worth it. The owners are also super friendly and nice. I definitely recommend trying them out and supporting them if you ever see them in the neighborhood, or check out their media to find their next location. I've seen this churro truck so many times but not once have I tried it. The 1st time I saw it was at Angel City Brewery but with Salt n Straw so close I never go there. I also see it in Monterey Park every now and then. I finally got a change to try them in Pasadena and I was not disappointed. We got their Salted Caramel Churro Sundae and it didn't disappoint. It was the perfect combination of hot and cold, sweet and salty, crunchiness and creaminess. read more
