I love Italian Ice! It's one of my all time favorite sweet treats! It's the perfect treat on hot summer days! The Tango Mango trucks sells some amazing Italian Ice. They have two sizes too choose from which are priced at $4 & $6 apiece. They're menu is small but all flavors are delicious (they let me sample them all). I love the fact that they put small pieces of fruit in their fruit flavors. Watermelon and Pineapple were my favorite. Once again this is the first impression from my 10 year old daughter who is my sous chef, budding food truck groupie and future yelper of all things edible after initial bites of her Italian ice at the Valley Food Truck Festival. If they offer you a sample, and they will, don't accept. I've heard stories of what people will do once hooked on crack and this was getting into that territory. The flavors are amazing, the textures are perfect and they give you just enough to want more. If they were ever parked in a school zone, they would get extra time. We went with the chocolate chip in the shorty (9 oz - $4) and a mixture of the pineapple and coconut cream in the tall (12 oz - $6). The chocolate chip has enough richness that it's not too sweet or will require you reaching for insulin. There are the right amount of chocolate chips to add to the flavor without making it overly crunchy. The coconut has the smallest shreds of coconut while the pineapple has...anyone? ...anyone?...small chunks of pineapple and together taste like a virgin Pina Colada. If this was a typical HOT Valley day, the line would have stretched halfway to Pacoima, but because it was a frigid mid-winterlike 63 degrees, there were no lines at all. Such a yummy Italian Ice truck! Staff was really friendly and prompt, which I loved especially in such a long line. But what slows down the line a lot is people asking for samples. There are only like 5 basic flavors... So I'm not sure why there is a need for all the sampling. Whatever. Small is 4oz and $4, large is 6oz and $6. However I recommend everyone get the small! 4oz is actually a lot, and my friends and I couldn't even finish ours. It's more than enough! We happened upon the Tango Mango truck (with its adorable little mascot logo) at the JACCC in Little Tokyo and just had to stop by. The guy working the truck was very generous with handing out samples to the many indecisive patrons standing around the window. The mango one was fun but I knew it would get overwhelming if I ordered a whole portion. And MM tried the cherry but it was too sweet for me (although if you like cherry icees from 7-Eleven, this was made for you!). I decided to keep it simple with the lemon flavor. It was clean, refreshing, and reminded me of those frozen lemonade cups you could get at theme parks in the summertime. As my first experience with Italian ice I feel like I'm now a little spoiled. The guy inside the truck overheard Ted and I discussion which flavor we should get (I wanted coconut but Ted doesn't like coconut) and so he waved us over and had us try a few flavors. The coconut creme was as good as anything I had ever had. I couldn't believe how smooth the ice was. It just instantly melted in our mouths. And the flavors were spot on. Crazy delicious! After a few taste testers from the super friendly and pleasant guy we settled on the mango ice. $4 for a shorty and went our merry way. As we were walking we kept 'oohing' and 'ahhing' at how incredibly awesome this ice was. The mango was great on flavor, as finely shaved as ice can be, and, if you can believe it, full of actual mango chunks!!! It was one of the most refreshing desserts I have ever enjoyed. These guys used to come every month to Westchester First Fridays and they haven't in a while and my husband was actually whining about how much he misses them. Easily the best italian ice ever. Great consistency, chunks of fruit or coconut of chocolate. Very clean flavor. You can get two flavors in the same caup...Our favorite combination is coconut and mango... I tried a combination of the mango and the strawberyy lemonade Italian ice here. The flavors were really good, and I especially liked how the mango ice had little chunks of real mango in it. I was worried the strawberry lemonade one was going to taste like one of those frozen minute maid lemonades, but it was much better. Unfortunately the consistency of this Italian ice is not quite what real Italian ice should be like. It should be a little bit smoother and less icey. The texture on this was just a bit off compared to the Italian ice I've gotten used to from spending so much time in New York. Surprising refreshing, authentic tasting and YUMMY! So I'm pretty skeptical on most ice creams b/c they usually taste like sugar and artificial flavors. Today, the Tango Mango Ice Cream Truck was here and well, my friend recommended I try it. Reluctantly, I did, and as soon as I had my first taste, my eye lit up! This is delicious!!! I had the mango flavor and the strawberry/kiwi one. It's like having authentic, delicious mango. You don't taste any artificial flavors (b/c there are NONE!), it melts on your tongue. I liked the chunky mango pieces too. The Kiwi Strawberry flavor was my favorite though. An unlikely candidate but it was fantastic. Their ice creams are light on sugar (taste wise) too. Yum Italian Ice! First saw these guys at First Friday in November. They serve Italian Ice in regular and large cups. Flavors include cherry, chocolate chip, coconut creme, kimi strawberry, lemon, mango, and pineapple. Now I had never seen chocolate ice, so I opted to give that a try. Then I realized - it said chocolate CHIP. I thought I was getting straight chocolate ice. First bite reveals that there are real chocolate chips in the ice! Terrific! My one concern is the pricing on this. It is $4 for a regular, and $6 for a large. Italian ice, for the portion that they serve, should not be this expensive. read more

I went to a neighborhood yard sale over the weekend (7/14/12) and this truck was there selling Italian Ice's. They were offering free samples, I cannot remember all of the flavors, but I did sample the chocolate chip and liked it. My mother ended up ordering a small pineapple and it was pretty good. I mean I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's shaved so fine and packed like a snowball loaded with fruity flavor! If that wasn't enough, this ice has nice chunks of the actual fruit packed into it. Tried this yummy truck for the first time at College of the Canyons Street Fair today. What a perfect treat for a hot day - and they are pretty smart to have been there (no other dessert trucks were present). Although I know what an Italian Ice is, I was expecting it to be more like a shaved ice. Not here! It was a beautiful ice with yummy chunks of fruit and a fresh, delicious taste! I had the peach, which was light and refreshing. My son had the mango, which was sweet and juicy with chunks of mango inside (not too firm and not at all mushy). My husband had the winner of the day with his coconut. It was sweet, rich and had beautiful pieces of fresh coconut inside. The large was a bit filling, so next time I'll go for a small. read more

I had a two hour conversation with the owner and operator of the Tango Mango truck--Art. I found him to be quite an intriguing human being with a great and giving spirit. He makes all his Ices from scratch in a warehouse in downtown LA using natural ingredients (raw sugar, actual fruit, filtered water). He moved from Philly, where Italian Ice is kind of a big deal, to risk the business venture of coming to LA. I loved all the flavors I tried (Passion Fruit, Coconut Creme, Chocolate Chip, Cherry) and watched as dozens of people came up to the truck to discover the delight I had found while wandering the street across from the LACMA. We tried some samples of the strawberry lemonade flavor during First Friday at Venice, but only one of us got some since it was night time so it was getting chilly. .... 5 minutes later the rest of us decided we actually wanted some. I know they've only been around since early August (according to their twitter feed) but they deserve some recognition for some amazing Italian ice! The people were very friendly and they gave out free samples of each of their flavors. I think there were about 5 or 6 (mango, kiwi strawberry, watermelon, etc.).
