I made the mistake of hiring others movers on July 1st of this year but I didn't like the way that they placed most of the furniture. They put furniture in front of the boxes and the furniture is too heavy for me to move by myself. I'm not very strong. I have chronic back pain and knee pain. The other place was cheap and they did not speak very much English. The only time I could understand them was when they demanded an extra $500 for the 3 of them as their tip. They broke some of my things (including my parents' tiffany lamp, an end table and my microwave). Worst of all was that the bed collapsed during the night because the other movers only used screws at the bottom of the bed. Today Riley & Sons movers came over and fixed my bed then they rearranged everything the way that I wanted. They took the broken microwave and end table to the dumpster then took some things to my sister's house. Then they brought back 2 chairs for me from my sister. The Riley & Son's movers were friendly, efficient and sympathetic to what I had to deal with from the other movers. Then I was pleasantly surprised when the actual cost was less than the estimated cost. When moving across country there are so many moving parts (no pun intended) that can cause huge delays, and increase costs. Riley & Sons helped us navigate those obstacles. They stayed on budget and over delivered on their work. Would recommend. I contacted Riley & Sons for a move across country, PHL to Sacramento. We looked at a number of companies, some full service movers and some self ship options. Riley & Sons was by far the best value based on their estimates and reviews. They did over deliver. They were extremely accommodating on the estimate visit, specifically dealing with 2 pickup locations. Kevin gave us some great tips on how to accomplish the move, while staying on budget. The movers that showed up the day of were awesome. The city unexpectedly ripped up my street the day before the move. The movers worked with the city's construction crew to get access and navigate the entire mess. This took what was potentially a huge headache away from us. After we were all packed up in the truck, service was still phenomenal. They were in contact with us to make sure we had great unloading help on the other end. They made payment incredibly easy. Solid movers! Needed 2 guys to move some furniture around the house and haul away a few heavy items. They did the basic things you expect from a mover and did them well. They were on time, nice and polite, and super careful. Covered floors and banisters, removed a door so a couch would fit, asked questions when something wasn't clear. Patiently waited for a few minutes while I took a work phone call. No damage, everything put where it needed to be. We've used Riley and Sons for a couple of moves over the years. They're the real deal and the only company we would have do this for us. read more

Worts move ever. I used Riley before, 2 times over past 10 years for moves between PA and FL with no issues. But now, the 3rd time it was the worst, will never call on them, nor recommend them. Their treatment of my items is an insult, and being a repeat customer at that. My boxes arrived as if they went through a tumbler. They paid no attention to labels of fragile, glass, top, arrows up as to not tilt to side, etc. Treated them all with equal contempt. Even worse, the dishonest way they described the condition of my furniture on their inventory sheet. They code their condition, 100% of them, as badly worn, scratched, soiled/stained, etc. Hardly worth paying thousand to move, by their own description all labeled as garbage condition. Of course, they present this AFTER all items are loaded, ready to go, a quick signature, off they go. An honest review is done up front, mutual review, let them show where all these stains, etc are. They do charge for insurance with 250 deductible, hardly worth having since insurance will not pay for garbage anyway. Just an other markup. Big mistake to go on trust, so I am a sucker for trusting them, always demand their list of item conditions BEFORE they load them, and if you want your items handled with care, you just may be in for a let down with Riley, as I was. Very disappointed in Riley. Company seems to have gone downhill since Kevin took over. Not customer focused, was difficult to schedule pick up and delivery-had to accommodate to their schedule, office staff rude, seem to only want to maximize profits--seem very mean-spirited. Riley and Sons definitely came through for us! We were in a public storage facility and were notified we needed to remove our stuff in a week as they were closing the doors for good! I called in a panic and 3 movers showed in less than 4 days to help clear out our household goods and take it to their warehouse to store for more than a year, while we had extensive renovations done on our house. The movers were friendly, helpful and so efficient. Storage went without a hitch and the staff could not have been more accommodating and easy to work with. When it came to the move back to our house, (2 of the 3 guys were familiar, great to see they keep their staff) another flawless experience! The movers were fantastic! My family members have used Riley and Sons Moving company numerous times over the years. They were amazing. Recently, I moved and when I arrived at my new location, my TV was shattered. Riley and Sons response to this was "The insurance that we provide with the moving package doesn't cover damages to the TV" They offered $30 towards a new 65 inch TV and said that in order for the TV to be fully covered, I would of had to pay for more insurance. They were extremely short with me in explaining all of this. I would not recommend this company and no one in my family or extended family will be using them in the future. read more

Jr. & Steve arrived on time! The moving literally started 3 minutes after arrival. They moved fast and were clear and communicative. Pricing was fair, even when they couldn't get the second part of my couch in my apartment they tried 4 times. Helping me take down the hallway light fixture and taking my door off the hinges. I had to pay for an extra hour to accommodate the second location for the sofa but the rates didn't send me to the poor house. I'd recommend this company to anyone that asks. read more

Stay away from this moving company. I had such a horrible experience. To start, they came in $1,000 dollars over the estimate, even though I gave them a very detailed inventory of all my items as they requested. They initially gave me a higher quote but when they realized I was shopping around, they underbid everyone else to win my business. A bit bait and switch if you ask me considering I was hit with a $1,000 surprise at the end of my move. Second - I had so much damage to some very expensive items that when I tried to file a claim, of course they delayed the response and ultimately rejected it. They threw it back into my face saying I signed off on everything during the walkthrough but how on earth can you do a proper walkthrough of a full home move? Their whole contracting is a total scam and not there to protect the consumer. The broke two very expensive tables, they put back together furniture by cutting corners, and we just realized they just threw our bed frame together without properly installing the bolts. We've been sleeping on a collapsed bed for months thinking our bed was defective only to realize they put it together half-assed. Third - Another example of a bait and switch is I purchased several mattress covers when I initially setup my move. When it came time to my move, there was not a mattress cover in sight and they used rolled up shrink wrap to partially cover my mattress! I couldn't believe my eyes and when I questioned them about it, the main guy gave me some BS excuse about how this was much better. Lastly - the main boss on the job was totally unprofessional. All he kept talking about was all his "hoes" and making very inappropriate comments about all his girlfriends. It was so uncomfortable and crazy considering my children were running around. All I can do is talk about my personal experience with Riley & Sons. I will never use them again for any sort of moving and I caution others as a result. Be aware! read more

We moved out of our home in center city Philly on June 1 and needed storage until July 1 when we moved into our new home in Lancaster County. I hired Riley and Sons for the job based on good reviews and positive meeting with the owner. As I have had numerous moves in my career including cross country, I felt comfortable with hiring an experienced, family run moving company even though they were the most expensive of my 3 moving estimates. I thought it would be worth it to pay top dollar for top service. I couldn't have been more wrong as I am disappointed with so many parts of this moving experience. I'm not going to go into all the problems but it started at the very beginning since they forgot to put shrink wrapping in their truck so they moved my new, expensive and beautiful sectional without being shrink wrapped as in the contract. Needless to say the sectional arrived a month later in my new home dirty and unseemly. To make it worse they refused to accept our recommendation for professional cleaning and supplied their own cleaner. Of course, he was the cheaper of the two choices. It didn't go well as his hose came apart during cleaning and dirty water was sprayed all over our living room walls and floor. Moreover, sectional lost its luster after clean. On delivery the platform bed now squeaks from their rushed and poor installation and the delivery team was unaware they were instructed to unpack boxes as we have a 18 month old baby girl and didn't want loads of boxes in the house. Their were major problems with home office communications as our final price was $500 more than I was informed days before move in day. Their apology noted it was their busy season, they had key staff out with vacations and they were training others. It seems to me since July is your busy season every year figure it out and manage your people better to give customers fair service for the top dollar you charge all year. Bottom line is I would not recommend Riley & Sons to family or friends, not worth the price and not dependable in their promises and services. As anyone who has moved knows, there are a million moving companies out there. As soon as you inquire with one, you are deluged with calls from others vying for your business. We chose Riley & Sons as they were local to where we lived in PA and seemed competitive in price. We kept hearing horror stories from others who had moved cross-country so we crossed our fingers and prayed for the best. I was already in California when they arrived at our Philadelphia home to pack up, but from all accounts they did a fine job (my husband was there participating). So far, five stars. The transport time was several weeks which (surprisingly, at least to me) is standard with these kinds of moves. No worries, I bought an air mattress and dealt with an achy back for about a month =) Both the driver and his wife were absolutely delightful when they arrived in CA with our things. They were very communicative in the days preceding their arrival to let us know when they'd be there. Once they were, they were all smiles and service. They refused our offers of help even with the extreme heat of the day. They brought all of our things up to the third floor apartment and made sure we were happy with the placement. Shortly before leaving, the driver had us sign an invoice, pay the bill and told us we had thirty days to check through everything and notify them if anything was missing. He and his wife (their names are escaping me), both deserve an A+++! Five stars for them! Unfortunately, a few things were found to be missing after we unpacked everything. A George Foreman Grill, tupperware and some floormats were the main items - nothing irreplaceable but certainly worth inquiring about in our opinions. My husband contacted the moving company with the following message: "Hello Riley & Sons! Hey, so I have gone through all our items that arrived on 6/22 and we came across a few items that are missing. I was explained to contact you once we finished inventory and found we had anything missing. Can you tell me what we can do about them? Items missing are : 1 Foreman Grill, 2 Large Plastic Tupperware containers, 2 Floor/Door Mats. Thanks for your help, and assistance through our entire moving process!" This is the response we received: "I spoke with the driver who delivered your shipment and he stated that he specifically remembers delivering a box that was labeled "Foreman Grill". As for the other items that were listed missing, all four pages of the inventory were signed, letting our company know that everything was delivered. As the men are bringing in boxes/furniture, it is the shipper's duty to check off on the inventory which items were delivered and to make sure everything was accounted for. Since the destination walk through paper and also the inventory were signed, letting the driver know everything was delivered, we are no longer liable for any missing items after this point." No, "I'm sorry to hear this," or "I will look into it." Just a brisk "You signed for it, not our problem," response. Not what I would expect in terms of customer service. We were not looking to place blame on anyone but to inquire as to whether our items were left behind or possibly delivered elsewhere due to a mistake. I'm quite sure that our driver, who had a huge trailer full of items from multiple households, does not remember specific boxes delivered to each house. Also, not sure why we were told we had 30 days if we were going to get this kind of response. Lesson learned - next time I move I will make the driver sit somewhere for a few days while I unpack each and every box to make sure that not one shred of my possessions are missing. Bottom Line: I would not use this company again based on their "we couldn't care less" attitude to a simple problem. I'm not saying they did anything wrong, but they should learn to treat customers with some care. read more

Emails were thorough and very clear on what I could do to help them provide an accurate quote, based on weight, distance, etc. The quote I was given was extremely detailed and made me feel they would do the very best to take care of all my belongings for this 560-mile move. Tim even thought of things I had not considered, even though I am a well-seasoned mover! Even when I informed Tim I was going to select another company, he exhibited the right customer-service attitude and action, asking why and if they could have done anything differently to win my business. While they arrived somewhat late to our apartment in Philadelphia, due to a car breakdown of one of the movers, the time was quickly made up efficiently, carefully and professionally. We were given a range of time that our delivery to Florida would be made and the furniture arrived on the first day of that range. While Justin was the only one from the original movers to come to Florida, he and his helper were extremely careful and professional ensuring that the furniture was reassembled properly and that each box was delivered to the correct room. Riley and Sons movers came to my house directly and quoted me 1800 dollars for my move from South Jersey to Manayunk. I needed to store my belongings with them for two weeks which was supposed to be an additional 400 dollars. Two weeks later after my stuff was delivered, I was given an additional 1800 dollar bill. I was then told the 1800 dollar quote was per load and unload of the truck. Essentially they charged me for an additional move because of the two weeks my belongings were in storage. This was never explained to me prior. I was charged for two full price moves. Completely taken by surprise. Total RIP OFF!! The movers themselves were cool, but this company really screwed me. I still don't have my furniture and my valuables after three years they broke almost every front piece of furniture in my house I've lived like in misery for the past 2 1/2 years because of them they were in a rush I wasn't rushing them it cost double the estimate to move six blocks $10,000 to move into a one bedroom apartment I don't mind the price but they wouldn't listen to what I want it they didn't bring my valuables they didn't bring my art it's all missing I don't know what they did with it. I asked them to bring a box of CDs with my music they they tend to say yes I just ignore me. I asked a few times they end up bringing a box with empty CD cases hundreds of them but the CDs are all gone there's something either stupid or corrupt going on here all my best things are gone all my cabinets furniture tables anything that they took apart is broken they got a bookcase they were putting together and they wouldn't follow the directions that I hate gave them from the original purchase they let it collapse on the floor. Kevin Riley was nice and first but then he had his people here and they were crazy they were crazy they did what they wanted not what I wanted they were supposed to sit down and go through my things and I could tell them what to take and what not to take they didn't do that it was the most stressful thing I have ever done in my life because of their behavior if I was smart that I would not have let him in the house. Three years and I still don't have a cable to eat on because they blocked it with boxes I don't have a chair to sit on because they put that on top of boxes why are high I can't read any of that they didn't label the boxes so I don't know where my things are my valuables are missing. I paid for insurance but it's only good for one day you guys took 10 days to move one day they come in and they come back a few days later it was a mess my housekeeper was here she had a nervous breakdown from them on the way they behaved. Maybe they could move things quickly and carelessly if you like that I don't let them touch your belongings don't let them touch any of your furniture that's of any value watch everything they do and the watchmen when they're sitting around or will cost you and you'll be very sorry later. read more

We chose Riley movers because they were a family owned, small business, and the owners were so attentive BEFORE the move, but when a problem came up, they were totally dismissive. We were retiring and moving from the Philadelphia area to Nevada, where once there, Riley would put our goods in a locked storage facility while we purchased a home. On moving day, both my laptop and my husband's laptop were together in our empty sunroom. Within 15 minutes of seeing both laptops there, mine was gone. I immediately went out to the moving van and explained that it was not to be moved and was to be taken in my car for our cross country trip. They insisted that they couldn't halt the moving process, and I would have to retrieve it at the other end of the move. I was concerned for two reasons. First, the point of a laptop is its portability. Logically, you would keep a laptop with you. Second, why would someone pack just my laptop and not my husband's laptop? The scenario just wasn't logical. But given the response I got, and the lateness in the day, I had no choice but to acquiesce. After settling on a property in Nevada, we opened each and every box, and my worst fears were confirmed. My laptop was not among our things. We paid Riley $700 to insure our property, and Kevin Riley has summarily dismissed the issue of the "lost" laptop. The situation is disheartening since the team of movers seemed like very nice college students, but obviously temptation got the better of one of them. Additionally, despite the hefty cost of "insurance" it appears that Mr. Riley is the insurance company, as he has totally denied our claim and will take no responsibility for our loss. Yes, we can file a claim with our homeowners insurance and they will honor it. But since the computer disappeared on Riley's watch, one would think that Mr. Riley would have the integrity to take responsibility for this unfortunate situation. Apparently, Kevin Riley considers "insurance" as an additional stream of revenue since Kevin Riley himself has denied the claim, and there is no insurance carrier involved. Once Riley is paid-in-full (at the destination with the required certified check) it sadly appears that profit trumps integrity. read more
