About 10 minutes later, we had some questions about specific varieties and waved him down. He was happy to help us and very knowledgeable. I was bored and I wanted to add some flowers to my front yard. And I set my eyes on a rosebush that I really wanted. I asked the employee what suggestions and who what favorites they had for roses and the colors. I ended up getting the peachy red tone kind of rose. I also ended up browsing and looking around at the other plants just to see if there was anything else that could catch my eye. But it was overwhelming to see so many plants in one little location. Not in a bad way though. I just didn't really think there would be that many plants of all kinds of varieties. And I thought it was really awesome to see all that as much as I would love to take them all home with me. I end up settling for this one little rose bush. And it's been a couple months now. And the bushes been growing fantastically it's been budding. It's also shown several roses on it. So it's really pretty to see it grow big healthy. I would definitely recommend this place. They have a really good variety of plants and roses and flowers to choose from. read more

I went to Rillito Nursery today to pick up some trees I got through a TEP program The "help" were so VERY RUDE I did not get the dirt I needed to plant them. When I told them I was there to pick up my trees the woman actually ROLLED HER EYES AT ME IN DISGUST. I have no idea what they have experienced, but I certainly did not deserve that treatment. I did decide to grab a few plants that looked interesting and again, was treated so very rudely I said something under my breath I was so shocked at it. I put the plants I had bought on a tray at the checkout and the woman snidely asked "Do you want A BAG for those? They were trailing vines, and actually, no, I would have preferred a tray... I am obviously disabled as I have my service dog with me always, you would think by her attitude that those plastic trays actually cost the nursery something, and I know for a fact they don't. Both the rude and nasty and demeaning women were working in the S building of the nursery today March 22nd. Just in case the owner cares how the customers are being treated. I will NEVER return. I am always treated kindly at the Home Depot on N Oracle at La Reserve. I plant a LOT of things and Rillito Nursery lost a big bunch of business from me, that is a fact. (I did stop at Home Depot for $70 worth of planting soil after picking up my trees) If I could give Rillito Nursery NEGATIVE stars I would. Even the voice mail I was left letting me know my trees were available was rude!! They need to suck it up and treat people like human beings. Of course, I was dressed to work outside, and perhaps that equated being "poor" to those people. I noticed little old retired looking ladies being treated with less nastiness than I was. I am offended completely and will tell everyone I know not to give them any business. I should have spit on the pavement when I left, and I never do that. I like to think I am kind and gracious to all people I meet in the course of the day. I was even kind to the RUDE WOMEN who "helped me", but it was a stretch. They should also realize they never know when a Yelp reviewer might be visiting their business for the first (and last) time. read more

A befuddled, new gardener am I, working to turn my black thumb a lighter shade of brown. I just recently began my gardening adventure which consists of fruits and vegetables in containers on my front porch. My tomatoes started looking a little sad and I was concerned when changing the sun exposure and watering schedule didn't help. I clipped off a bit of the plant and took it to Rillito to ask for help. Chelsea was at the front counter when I walked in on a late Sunday afternoon and she asked several questions and then pulled out a big book and flipped to the tomato pages where she showed me a plant infected with a particular virus and said she thought maybe that was my trouble. She offered to show one of her botanist friends and call me the next day. Well the verdict is still out on the virus but when I got my return call the woman asked a few more questions and determined it was the soil mixture they were sitting in and and advised me on how to properly care for my plants. Both Chelsea and this other woman knew I had purchased all my plants at another nursery but cared enough to help me out. Green....or brown... thumbs up! read more

I support small businesses and have always enjoyed the selection at Rillito Nursery. So I'm extremely disappointed that the staff do not wear face masks at the cash register, where it is not possible to social distance. I stayed several feet away from the cashier, but I shared with her that my husband has an immune deficiency and asked if she would mind putting a mask on just to check me out. She replied, no she would not. So I chose to leave without making my purchase, instead of proceeding with a needless risky interaction. I'm actually more than disappointed. I'm deeply saddened to have had this pointedly uncaring experience. read more

This review is for customer service on a recent transaction. Rillito has great plants, but they need to up their game in advising their customers on options. This applies to the daughter of the owners with whom we dealt. We were considering two options: either trying to revive a bug-infested and stressed plant (purchased last year from Rillito) or buying a new one and having them install. We needed it installed before we left town for the holidays. The first problem was that she said she wouldn't tell us if installation was available until we bought the plant. Obviously, we wouldn't be buying the plant unless it could be installed by the date we needed. After several go-rounds, the owner overheard, intervened, and found a way for us to be fit into their tight schedule, which we very much appreciated. At that point, however, no costs had been quoted. The original salesperson began to ring up the sale, and the total was twice as high as we had imagined - $240 on a $50 plant. We had about 10 seconds to make a decision. We went for it, but then learned we ourselves would have to remove the old plant that's diseased. Instead of being a fun outing making decisions about our landscape, it turned into a rushed and stressful time with not enough conversation and advice to make a good decision. When we got home and had time to think about it, we realized we're not able to get the old plant out in the next couple days, the cost is too high, and we should wait until we buy more plants to make it cost-effective. We were disappointed they insisted on charging us a cancellation fee, though that is not our main concern. There is a higher standard for customer service today than in the past. Rillito is a great family-owned nursery but they need to figure out better ways of truly serving us customers who want to do business with them. read more

I hadn't been here in awhile because they usually don't have what I am looking for. I called and asked if they had milkweed for my butterfly garden. Beth said yes. Drove all the way over there to discover they had one, not very healthy, plant. I asked for a discount and she said no. I had caterpillars, so I bought it. Went to my favorite nursery (that is farther away) the next day and got healthy, happy milkweed. You will see the difference in the pics. This is the last time I will go to Rillito. I have given them many chances (because they are closer to me than Green Things), but I am done. read more

The staff are knowledgeable, considerate and always helpful as you would anticipate with folks that work close to nature. I've been buying my organic garden vegetables at the Rillito Nursery for well over a decade. I've never been disappointed in the service and understanding from staff. However, the owner has a very penurious, off- putting attitude when there's an issue. I bought an eggplant starter with the proper label which turned out to be a different very bitter yellow variety. Simple problem, easy to solve. With the 1st call, I found the owner evasive. I was more direct with the 2nd call. She said to bring in the plant and the tag and she'd replace it with another eggplant starter. I arrived to find 2 really, really crappy looking plants. I ended finding healthier plant on my own. The owner is a definite contrast to the helpful, kind staff working at the Rillito Nursery. read more

All the employees were wearing masks this last weekend when I stopped by. The employees are friendly enough and knowledgeable when you ask them questions. But don't expect them to be overly friendly like some other nurseries that just really want you to buy things. They have a decent variety of plants and I have found that they have quite a few native varieties that are much more affordable than buying from nurseries that specialize in them. We've purchased very healthy, large milkweeds, fairy dusters, butterfly bushes etc. from them for a fraction of the price that other vendors sell them for. You just have to keep an eye out. You might not find everything you need here but definitely worth checking out, rather than just relying on the bigger nurseries or box stores. read more

We went made an extra effort to support Rillito whenever they were able to be open during lockdown and we were all masked. Got a couple of plants. Watered them exactly how they recommended. Plants died two days later. The lady there kept saying "they didnt get enough water". Eventhough I kept saying I followed the instructions they gave me. NO refund or any type of help offered. I do not recommend this place. Customer service was horrible read more

I always found the staff here to be knowledgeable, helpful and friendly including the men that come out to plant your purchases for you. I love the service of coming to my home and removing old growth and planting new trees, shrubs, what have you and the men doing it knowing what they are doing. Highly recommended! read more

Beautiful grounds and display! We came to browse and really enjoyed our time here. They have sections for different types of plants, low water and flowering and edible. There is even a water section with a cute pond. The staff was helpful and showed us around. The prices are a bit high. I will be returning to find special plants for my home. read more

Our visit here was great! We set out on a Saturday looking for a tree for our newly constructed home. Our backyard is almost bare. We left a different nursery after 15 minutes of walking around without a soul in sight. Here we were greeted immediately by Katie and when we told her what we were looking for we were given tons of suggestions and information. She spent half an hour with us and we left with three trees and plans to come back. The whole place is beautifully maintained and you can tell the owners take pride in their business. read more

My recent purchase on 9/16/2019 of succulents and 2 Scaevola (fan flowers) will be my last at Rillito Nursery. I transplanted the fan flowers into medium pots, fed them vit.B solution and placed them in the shade. Within a day and a half, they were struggling. One was close to death, having crispy leaves even though the soil was moist. I moved one inside and left the other in the original location. Neither improved and I decided to photograph them and go back to the nursery for a refund. I explained what happened and showed the photos to Katie, the owner's daughter I believe. She asked a series of questions, changing tack each time I answered. Did I water them? Did I water them every day? Was the soil wet all the way down? Did I plant them correctly? When I explained that I am an experienced gardener, read the tag instructions, and looked up the plant online, she stated that the tag didn't apply because these plants come from California. I replied that I live a few miles from the nursery and I replicated the environment they were in-shade, moist soil, western side of house so there was no direct sun for a few days. At no time did she express regret, sympathize, or offer to replace the plants. In fact, she said she needed to see the actual plants even though I had brought in photographs and had the receipt. In the end, she said "I can go half for you" in a completely dismissive tone. I chose to not accept this offer and told her I will shop elsewhere from now on. Her attitude was absolutely arrogant and offensive. The whole interchange made me sad because I would have accepted the offer of half IF she had been gracious and understanding. Instead, her demeanor was untrusting, annoyed, and argumentative. I can shop elsewhere, and will. read more

After years of recklessly planting, and never having them survive, I decided to consult with experts at Rillito. Stopped here looking for a few things, and was befuddled by the mix of staff (some clueless, some almost rude, some nice). I wanted a cheap tomato cage and all they had were $15 coated ones - the almost rude salesperson said those are better because they last more than one season (the others don't last? News to me). Someone told me where to find the tomato plants, but made no effort to walk me to them. I'm used to the huge selection and very knowledgeable staff at Mesquite Valley Growers or Magic Garden, and this operation seemed amateur in comparison. I won't be back. Will stop short of relaying the rest of the conversation with the almost rude salesperson, but suffice to say that I wasn't impressed. read more

A definite problem with customer service when something goes wrong. I believe that courtesy and good business practices are warranted when plants begin to fail within hours and days of purchase, which did not occur in this case. We believe that bringing dead plants back to a nursery should be the exception rather than the rule -- so, this is the FIRST time we've done that. So, this story relates to Dwarf Bottlebush, which we were lead to by one of the staff when providing a photo of location and type of planting by our house. After purchasing 3 of them, one began to fail in short order. Due to years of loyalty to this nursery, I felt assured that they would gladly replace the plant knowing that the other two were flourishing. A call to the nursery within days of purchase made it very clear that the fault was ours and ours alone. Me: "Can you replace it?" Mgr: "Have you planted it?" Me: "No." Mgr: "It could be [fill in the blank]." Me: "But two are fine, only one is failing." Mgr: "Well, that's why we give long speeches on this plant." Me: "We received NO SPEECHES, I can assure you." The conversation went downhill from there clearly indicating that they would not replace the plant. $50 loss? Where was a response such as -- "How can we help you?" "Bring the plant in for our analysis. Gosh, yes that is an expensive plant." And, why the question "Have you planted it?" Later, there were other questions which made us believe we might be on a successful path. We watered more, the only advice provided on the phone. The plant did not improve. So, 2 1/2 weeks after purchase we took all 3 plants into the store and did Show and Tell to no avail. Oh, well we could buy a new one at Cost, sayeth the manager Beth. She then said, "Didn't you read the receipt -- we do not guarantee our plants!" A response of "we do not guarantee...." might have clinched the discussion earlier! In the end, we found the manager's defensive position as one that was attempting to make us feel like liars, not customers. Done, Rillito! Bad plant, Bad attitude. Bad customer service. The gardener who does our yard recommends Civano, a nursery who stands behind their plants and gives good customer service. Just one last comment. I have discussed this situation with many friends and they are appalled that the nursery would not replace the plant within 30 days of purchase. So, we are not alone in our concerns. read more

I went to Rillito Nursery on Saturday. The gentleman who helped me was very friendly & knowledge. Even though the nursery didn't have the plant I wanted, he continued to provide good advice. I didn't notice much difference in their prices as compared to other nurseries. Obviously, the big box stores can undercut the prices @ the local nurseries, but it's rare to find anyone @ those stores who knows much about the plants. read more

Great selection of trees (citrus and other), flowers, shrubs, bushes, and everything else you would need for your backyard. They typically cater to landscapers, so they have a big selection of large plants. Everyone there was very helpful and knowledgable and we were able to get delivery ($25) for the next day with no problem. Now we'll just have to see if the plants can survive in Tucson! read more

I am a big fan of this place. It is like going to a botanical garden where you can buy everything. OK maybe its not just like that but it is a nice place to go and browse around if you know you want to buy something that grows but you are not sure what. Their citrus trees all had fruit on them. I had a lemon tree for four years and I have not been able to get a lemon. This winter it finally froze so now I can pull it out and go buy one of these trees. They also deliver in the area for $25.00 which is nice when you buy a tree that is too big for the minivan. read more

I have come here a couple time for some plants. Ocassionally just to browse. The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgable on their greens. They have helped us with a bug problem and offered a great solution that worked the first time. I have never been pushed to purchase anything - they are just happy to see smiling faces. And trust me, walking around their rose garden is hard to not have a smile on your face. I bet they have 30+ rose bush selection. My favorite are the English roses - and I can never pick my favorite color. read more

I've been shopping there for twenty years, I think, and they have always been super helpful, even when I come in with weird requests. Staff are very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. They listen when I say I wish they carried this or that, and eventually it always shows up! And they remember their customers and know what they use and what they might like.
