Took my daughter out to eat for her birthday while she was a student at Berea College, where I am an alumni. This location used to be another restaurant previously. Nothing very impressive about location. Typical Mexican menu. No complaints on food taste or portion. Nothing stands out for this spot, if you're looking for Mexican that you can get in most cities, it's fine. read more

I five star the people, the waitstaff and experience. This is our go place for the last few years when passing through Berea. I love the chicken fajita salad I get with no shell and frozen raspberry Margarita. My husband gets the grilled chicken salad so Yes, you can eat healthy at a Mexican restaurant. Every staff member has been so kind and hospitable. I keep thinking that this time will be the time I'm disappointed and that day has never come. Moving out of Tucson last year, I thought I'd never really crave Mexican food again. I was wrong. Let me explain why. Rio Grande -- befittingly called "Mexican Hardee's" and lest we think that's racially offensive, this Brown dude observed the orange faux-brick interior and appreciated that the workers were in on the joke too -- is located on Chestnut Street a short walk away from Berea College. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner and a half-bar (beer, margaritas, limited spirits). I have dined here many times in my first year living here and I've been impressed every time. I like it primarily because the portions are huge, staff are always pleasant and friendly, and you walk out of here feeling appreciated for coming in. And full, don't forget full and maybe tipsy. Buspersons bring out complimentary chips and salsa after you place your drink orders. The menu isn't complicated. It mostly consists of standard tex-mex food like enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, and the like. Restaurant-specific dishes revolve mostly around grilled and sauteed meats served on large plates or hot mini-skillets, usually with grilled vegetables and a tomato, cream, or white cheddar sauce or top. If I want a quick lunch, I'll settle for a couple of enchiladas with rice and/or beans. If I want a filling dinner, fajitas are the safest bet; they come fully dressed with rice, beans, tomato, shredded lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. Pricier varieties include chorizo and seafood among the meats served. On the rare occasion that I've had dessert, the chimichanga cheesecake is rich and a bit much. Topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and served with ice cream, you should probably get a friend to help lest you risk walking out with the -itis. My colleagues raved when we learned that MH began serving margaritas. Again, no frills: frozen or on-the-rocks, salt rim or none. You can also get them in strawberry or mango. Because there's no bartender on staff, our guess is that individual servers make them and some folks believe in a heavy pour. So, think carefully if you order a second one. The restaurant also offers a punch-card promotion. Buy ten entrees and get $8 off of your 11th purchase. (Lunch is essentially free if you redeem it then.) Again, it's the no-frills atmosphere that really makes this place fun. MH knows how to serve good food at a very affordable price point. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the most profitable restaurant in town. read more

Came here to enjoy dinner with my husband and in-laws. All of the food tasted like they just heated it up out of a can. The refried beans were cold, the enchiladas were cold and had a weird taste. The food was very bland. I would not recommend this place and I won't be back. Very disappointed in the quality of the food. This is my husband and I's go-to spot when it comes to Mexican food. The friendliest service in town, and the food is absolutely delicious. I've eaten the Enchiladas Suizas and the Burrito California, and they are both packed with flavor. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are doing curbside pickup, and the service is quick. Since the building used to be a fast food place, they have taken advantage of the drive-thru window to give out meals. And if you want tasty margaritas, this is the spot to go! They are a bit potent, but with the times being the way they are, it may just be what you want. read more

We called it Mexican Hardee's because the current owners never bothered to remove the old Hardee's imagery. (Just wait 'til you reach for the door handle and double-take its giant smiling star face.) Looking for the best tasting, most authentic, Mexican food that Berea has to offer? Come here! Why? Because it's the ONLY Mexican joint in Berea. I'm from Los Angeles -- people here eat Mexican food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While living in Berea, I had to beg people to step foot in this joint. Too spicy. Too different; they'd complain. Trust me it's not too spicy or too different. This is the most white bread Mexican food you'll ever come across, Kentucky! These neighborly, Spanish speaking, immigrants have concocted a huge menu of Southern Americanize Mexican food--put down the KFC and expand your palate, people! You'll like it. The staff is very friendly. I like the fact that they have tables inside and outside. Great location, you can walk to a couple of other cute stores nearby. The food is perfect for people that like something Mexican but not too crazy. They will bring you extra spicy salsa if you ask for it. They change their specials every day. Really not good. Find another spot. I love a family run Mexican place in an old Hardees as much as the next gal. But trust this is NOT a divey gem of home-made goodness. The meat was inedible. I ordered a fajita salad (beans were fine) - my huz ordered fajitas. So each of us got shrimp, chicken & steak. Pretty nasty cuts of scrap meat - no seasoning to disguise the quality. I honestly questioned that it actually was chicken or steak it was that unrecognizable. And stopped eating as I worried for our health while on vaca. You're welcome. read more

First off the food is bland at best. I ordered the chimichanga (fried burrito), and it was soggy like they just dipped it in cold oil. My girlfriend also found a rock in her food. Also instant diarrhea. I wish I had got Taco Bell instead. read more

We are long time Berea locals and we eat here more than anywhere else in town. Great value. Good, but toned down and simplified Mexican food (That's why my wife loves to eat here). Very good people, owned by an Hispanic family. If you are from a big city somewhere get the fajitas and you'll be surprised by how much food you get for your money, and they are nicely cooked.
