Restaurant Week introduced me to Tosca, and honestly, I probably would've never discovered this restaurant otherwise. What a find! The Restaurant Week menu had a nice variety with something for everybody. I started with their version of a salad that started with an "M" and it was SO good, while my friend had the gazpacho. For our next course, I went with the branzino and my friend got the salmon. Both dishes were flavorful, well made, and beautifully presented. Dessert was another 10/10. I had the tiramisu and my friend had the sorbet. But we HAVE to talk about the homemade focaccia rolls! They almost have the shape and feel of a muffin, with these seasoned tomatoes baked into the middle. When you bite into it, the tomatoes create this delicious, almost saucy center. So good and definitely memorable. The restaurant itself has a cozy ambiance, beautiful mirrors, and it's quiet enough that you can actually sit and have a conversation. Everything was very clean, and the service was prompt throughout our entire meal. Thankful for Restaurant Week for putting Tosca on my radar because I literally would've never noticed it otherwise. I had a fairly uncomfortable experience here. I arrived with my baby and the host looked at me in a very unfriendly way, almost like I didn't belong there. I was simply dressed in jeans and a jacket because it was very cold outside. The food was good and the service from the server was okay, but what really surprised me was that towards the end of my meal I asked where the restroom was and the server asked me If I would like to pay first as if I were to just get up and run out with my baby. Unfortunately, the way I was treated made the experience feel very uncomfortable. I hope the restaurant can improve on how they welcome guests. read more

Food was pretty good and not too overfilling. Everything was flavorful and served warm. The menu doesn't do a good enough job describing some of these dishes. The feature pasta with truffles was the highlight of our visit. Service was great and everyone was attentive. The server was able to give some good suggestions. The restaurant was a nice size. The tables were close enough together that you could call it intimate. They have a large party room with doors that keep all the noise out of the dinning room. The bathrooms were decently cleaned. They don't have paper towels though, only an air dryer for your hands. Their cocktails weren't very exciting or enticing so we settled for wine. read more

This is the second time we have had the pleasure of eating here. The first time was just for cocktails and dessert. This time we had the Chefs Tasting menu. In a word, Incredible! Several items are not on the regular menu such as the cocoa powder infused Tagliatelle, veggie "Carbonarra". And the Moulard Duck Ragu Lasagnetta. The entire experience was incredible. What more can I say after my previous review of Tosca? My husband Rick and I were visiting our friends Mike and Robin and we decided on having lunch here. Now I must tell you, even though they have a lunch menu, it ain't cheap! I'm a sucker for great pasta, so I went for the Agnolotti del Plin (pasta stuffed with beef, chicken, veal and parmesan. Robin is a pasta lover too. She went for the Tagliatelle. We both agreed that this leagues ahead of the pasta your local pizza joint serves. Our husbands: they opted for the steak salad. Of course we had to top it off with Tiramisu . So yes, a lunch here will cost you more than your monthly food budget. It's a place to have a rare treat. read more

On a business trip and definitely a unique experience! Our local host coordinated with several of her friends from college and this was our third leg of a great three nights of fantastic dining! She negotiated with the restaurant to score us a late reservation at 6:00 and got us in! The restaurant was a really fun experience and the inside of the restaurant was very comfortable. On with the food. I opted to skip the appetizers but my fellow guests sampled the list but I did try a piece of the focaccia basket. Very soft bread with a nice shell. The flavors were something else as the tomatoes baked in the bread and the fresh herbs just made it something so special. Others tried the tartare and the prosciutto dish. For my dinner, I wrestled with so many great choices - my table ordered the veal chops and I went with the Tagliata di Manzo! It was incredible and cooked perfectly. The mushroom and flavor of the meat with the two purées made it pop. The meat was so tender and packed with flavor. I again skipped desserts but the table raved about the tiramisu... until my next trip to DC! read more

We had a tasting menu experience at Tosca that was fully worth all 5 stars. The Sicilian-centric menu left no doubt about this chefs rising star. The entree was a Wagu steak and the courses were absolute perfection in size, taste and presentation. Brian K is THE consummate server-host. Whatever he earns- it's probably not enough. We are talking old school service from a rather young guy. Anyway, we truly enjoy dining with Tosca and the ambiance is special- a who's who of the DC elite all coming to pay homage to a special, terrific establishment that receives little recognition against the power houses around DuPont Cir and Navy Yard. Near perfect meal at Tosca. We sat at the bar on a quiet Monday evening (during the shutdown) and had a terrific, fresh salad followed by perfect pasta dishes - just the right amount al dente and well-flavored sauces. I had to ask twice for the music to be turned down in the bar but once that happened, it was absolutely delightful. The bartender was thoughtful and attentive. Ristorante Tosca was definitely a high-end Italian dining experience. Although we were less than "sophisticatedly" dressed, they graciously seated us without hesitation. We started with the frisee and radicchio salad with a citrus vinaigrette, which was a "special", a ceasar salad, fried cauliflower, and the focaccia bread service. They were all delicious starters to our meal. The Garganelli, Pappardelle, and Fusilli pastas were delicious. We also had the truffle pasta which was a special and oh-so-fragrant. I could smell the lovely woodiness of the truffles from across the table. If you are expecting heaps of pasta, you will not get that here. Portions are petite, but I was fine with that. The flavors were spot on and together with the starters, I was not left hungry. Dessert was also a delight. We had the Tiramisu, the lemon tart special, and Tutto Cioccolato. They were a perfect way to end the meal. Along with your check, they provide a tray of little cookies which were also delicious. Service was professional, timely, and to the point. I would not characterize it as "cold" but it was not "warm" either, which does not affect this rating. Overall, the food was great. I would return, though I feel that this place is more suitable for a special occasion. read more

We've been to Tosca twice and they didn't disappoint!! The menu is small - but I always see that as a good sign. It means they make all of their dishes impeccably. We started with their focaccia bread - like little croissant cupcakes with tomato and coarse salt on top. Yum! We had to order 2 more. Then onto the buratta appetizer with endive, pomegranate, golden berries and pistachio. I loved this different take on buratta. The tuna crust is a dish to write home about! Super fresh tuna in a sweet citrusy sauce with sea beans. So fresh and delicious! We spit the bolognese and lobster ravioli special. Both were delicious - pasta cooked well, flavorful simple sauces and perfect portion size for 2 to split. Their tiramisu is creamy and crunchy with little chocolate balls on top. Came here to celebrate for dinner. Started off with their famous Focaccia Bread, Scallop, and Grilled Octopus. Every single appetizer was amazing! For our entrees we got the Seafood Risotto and Steak. Steak was decent, but the risotto was the star of the show. Surprisingly large portion with lots of seafood. For dessert I got the Tiramisu which looked amazing, but tasted alright. The service was great and very on top of things. While somewhat close to other tables, the vibes were still great. Really enjoyed our date night here before catching the ballet. The service was impeccable and the food was very good. We got the focaccia rolls and they were one of the best things I've eaten this year. That bread will easily get me back in the door. I got the butternut squash soup as my starter and it was good. A great winter soup. I Followed that with the tagliatelle. When I tell you it was amazing, I'm telling you it was amazing. Also, the pasta is house made - hello! My husband didn't love his pasta special with duck as much as we both loved my tagliatelle. I then got the steak as my main. It was good but I personally found the trumpet mushrooms to be slightly distracting. My husband does not agree with my assessment and loved the trumpet mushrooms - so he ate mine and we were both happy. Would gladly return. read more

Our recent dinner was our first to Tosca. Although the ambiance and service was stellar, the food was not worth the prices. An added demerit - the chair I sat in had very poor back support making it uncomfortable to sit through dinner. Zuppa di Zucca - butternut squash soup was very filling, but the spoon-fulls I tried didn't wow me (despite it saying it had chestnut, spinach, and celery). Cavatelli - this I liked, with the pasta being fresh, broccolini giving it a healthier touch and nice pine nuts and ricotta mixed in, not overly cheese-filled nor greasy. Branzino - this was good as well, but I felt the sunchokes could have been more prominent in the puree. While I liked the artichokes they were tough in parts and the overall dish was too salted. Husband also had spaghetti alle vongole which he said was 'good.' We didn't try dessert. I appreciated the waiter informing me a half portion was an option - otherwise I would have had way too much between the pasta and the main dish. Portions were decently-sized. Overall it was not a bad experience, but I would opt for other Italian places before returning. read more

Very special place. The food was amazing with truffles imported from Italy a rare delicacy for us. The Wagyu beef was top notch and I enjoyed the scallops appetizer very much - a unique presentation on shells. We could tell the ingredients were all fresh and carefully considered. The attentiveness from staff was genuine and heartfelt, touches like wrapping our daughter's flowers in cellophane (she was dancing in The Nutcracker) and storing them in the refrigerator while we ate. Tosca is easily one of the better Italian restaurants I've been. We didn't have reservations but was able to get a table without having to wait. The decor was classy and sophisticated. The service was excellent, similar to what you'd get at a Michelin star restaurant. The staff was great and very attentive. The food at Tosca was very good and came out quickly. John was nice enough to let us try some complimentary appetizers! We had some had focaccia, polenta fries, risotto balls along with some pickled beets as our appetizers. They were all good. The polenta fries and risotto balls were crispy and cooked perfectly. The focaccia bread was good, you could definitely taste the rosemary. The pastas here are made in house and are full of flavor and although the pasta portions are on the smaller side, it was filling. My veal chops were cooked nicely, the sauce was a tad on the salty side for me but the potatoes were delicious. The complimentary dessert that came out was a nice touch. Make sure you get some wine with your meal, I didn't have any but my friends said the wine was good. Also, John was extremely knowledgeable about the wines offered as well as the proper glassware for the different types of wines. Overall a really nice experience made extra special by the staff. Overall a nice place to eat at for a special occasion. It's pricey and you won't get full with their small portions unless you order multiple courses. I had their lobster pasta special with walnut and it was really good! But yes the portion was small so I was still hungry but good thing I had the dessert which was super tasty and presented nicely. Their espresso martini was also delicious and could barely taste the alcohol. The staff and waiters were kind and attentive. The vibe here initially seems upscale and fancy but then there are people who dress like whatever so they aren't that strict with appearance unless you're looking like you rolled out of bed I guess. Impeccable service. Our waiter Matthew was an absolute rockstar. If you get the chance of dining with him you're in for a treat. We had the Ora king salmon appetizer which was the perfect combination of buttery salmon, olive oil and crisp bright notes from the plants- and visually interesting with the edible flowers. Sea bream was cooked perfectly, just a little too sauce forward for my tastes. The little laminated breadstick things were the perfect buttery salty accompaniment to the meal. The food was amazing. I ordered the gargantelli, prosciutto and tiramisu. Gargantelli pasta was soo good. Highly recommend it. The prosciutto was a little underwhelming. I didn't think it was the best. It was my least favorite thing I got. Tiramisu was delicious! I really enjoyed the portion sizes.
