Although the food was excellent, the customer service really won me over. One of the dishes we received fell short of our expectations. Even though we didn't ask for it, the manager quickly appeared to the table, handled the problem, and removed the dish from our bill. Making sure we enjoyed the entire meal was the manager and waiter's top priority. The risotto, veal, and lamb meals we ordered were delicious. There is something to be said about excellent customer service, so I will most definitely return. read more

Went to Tosca last night prior to seeing Little Shop of Horrors at Ford's Theater, and it was a treat. Avoiding the loud buzz of other local places, and a menu with basic choices done with their own spin. Gnocchi was good, with fresh seafood - calimari, clams, and other bits I couldn't identify. Bread and oil came complementary. And "the thing" cocktail was slightly sweet without a taste of alcohol that was definitely there. Tosca is likely my favorite Italian restaurant in Washington with the exception of Fiola, which I consider to be in a tier of its own. Unless you are willing to pay more than $150/ person, Tosca is your best option for lunch and dinner. The servers are incredibly polite and knowledgable, probably the best in D.C. Service is quick, and the food is beautifully presented and appropriately portioned. Appetizer: Radicchio e Gorgonzola (4/5): This salad is pretty good. It was on the smaller end but the flavor was there. The walnuts and pear add a nice dimension to the dish but the red chicory was not particularly flavorful or crisp. For appetizers, I would recommend the burrata or prosciutto. Entree: Lamb Fettuccine (5/5): This is why you come to Tosca, the pasta. You can't go wrong with any of the pastas here. My fettuccine was freshly made, chewy, and not too rich. You can enjoy their pasta for lunch and not walk around feeling gorged for the rest of the day. The portions are perfect for me, not too small like some pricier Italian restaurants or massive like others. I would recommend Tosca for lunch or dinner. Their menu is a perfect size, plenty of options without leading to a loss in quality. Their ingredients are quality and everything is delicious. They are pricier but you are getting a very quality meal for the cost and you will not leave hungry! Note: During lunch especially, it can get a bit loud. read more

Overall a positive experience as the food was delicious. The reason for my three stars is that I made a request for an adjustment of the dressing on a tomato and mozzarella salad special which was quickly dismissed by the waiter. Not trying to be a Karen, but I'm pregnant and cannot consume anything with raw eggs. My question seemed to offend the waiter which I found a bit ridiculous given that if I wasn't pregnant, I would have ordered it with no question. I hope to come back here after my son is born and update my review. I'm in DC at least a few times a year for work. I came in tonight with a friend from out of town and this was by far the best restaurant experience I've ever had. From service to food, everything was spectacular. Amy was our server and honestly I've never been more impressed with a server in my life. I was debating between two pastas and she goes, "why don't we do half and half." Talk about customer service! Amanda was totally on the mark when she recommended the heirloom tomato special as a starter. The grilled salmon with salad on the side was also perfection. Pan-seared Alaskan halibut, red pepper coulis and sauteed zucchini. The fish is perfectly cooked with a nice sear crust and flaky in the middle. The red pepper coulis adds zesty flavors and salt to the game. Second, recommend the Manzo. Grilled beef tenderloin, asparagus, garlic scapes, brussels sprout leaves, barolo wine sauce. I came here to check out the winter restaurant week menu. The menu was a bit confusing at first since there are four sections - salad, pasta, main course, and dessert. One of my friends who dined with me mentioned the restaurant could offer half the serving of any of the pasta dishes if we don't choose the salad options. We asked the waiter about this and he was willing to offer this option without hesitation. The first course was the fettuccine. The black ink pasta was cooked to perfection and complemented well with the chili oil and garlic crema. The clam pieces were chewy and flavorful to top things off. I then had the Icelandic cod for the main course. The size was a good portion and was cooked well with just the right amount of salt. The peperonata, made of sweet bell peppers, onion, and tomatoes, was a tasty addition to the cod. I ended the meal with the dark chocolate cake as the dessert. It had espresso cream and whipped chocolate ganache. The milk chocolate gelato was a perfect addition. Overall, all three dishes were delicious! The service was also exceptional. The waiter was very friendly and attentive and there were at least four others who helped him with our table. The restaurant was comfortable and had a good vibe. There is probably a reason why this place was so packed. I would definitely come back to check out the regular menu items in the near future. read more

Been here many times. Something is different - new chef? The last two visits were not very good. Went there yesterday and had the agnolotti. The filling was dry, some parts of the pasta were cooked unevenly, and it tasted like ground beef and not the savory meat filling like it used to be. Plus it was mostly butter sauce with drops of brasato sauce. Not like it used to be. It felt like cheap ingredients at an exorbitant price. My friend didn't like the risotto either. All the food lacked seasoning. Overall, this place has gone downhill. Not like it used to be. Sadly, it's a never again. read more

Due to a miscommunication (i.e., we originally intended to dine a La Tasca in Chinatown several blocks away), we ended up having lunch here. While the prices are on the higher end, it's clear this restaurant typically offers a higher end experience. The reasonable portions are plated with an eye toward detail, the service is attentive, the ambiance is classy, and the clientele well heeled. The space is well utilized, and the noise level is manageable. While I probably won't be back for a quick work lunch, Tosca is definitely on my list of places appropriate for special occasions. We were visiting DC and wanted to find a Chef's tasting event as we are huge foodies. I found this restaurant through Yelp and realized they not only had a Chef's tasting but it was a Chef's table in the kitchen - which is a huge plus for us foodies. From the moment we arrived, we were treated special. The sommelier/host did a fantastic job explaining each wine and the Chef explained each dish. The food was amazing.... Amouse bouche Caprese salad with fresh burrata Cacio de Pepe with pecorino cheese and freshly shaved black truffles, Gnocchi with bolognese slow roasted beef short ribs that cooked in red wine and a fabulous chocolate mousse dessert. Not your average Italian food.... The atmosphere is vibrant and energetic. The menu is out the box but surprisingly tasty. The ravioli short ribs were delicious, the shrimp was tooooo fresh for me in that it still tasted like the ocean, but the ribeye was filling and almost cooked to perfection. For the sweet lovers the sorbet will clean your a palate and is refreshing at the end a your meal. However, save your calories and skip dessert and enjoy more of the delicious bread. Yum. 4 stars and change for a great Restaurant Week dinner date night. Awesome service (Eugene? Ogin? We're deaf, sorry for butchering your name) with Pavel and a floater to support. We received gentle reminders to not trip or fall with the step down by our small banquette table. We were defeated by that first basket of bread-- rustic slices and herbed focaccia (which I preferred but he found too salty). Cocktails are steeper than average ($15), tasty but not quite CR quality. Their "Manhattan Project" was more herbal than sweet, but potent on the rocks. Hot toddy was fantastic-- I loved that the extra tea was served so I could doctor the balance myself... which basically yielded a bottomless-though-exponentially-weakening warm beverage to sip on around the cinnamon stick and cloves. We got two apologies for how long the hand-crafted cocktails took to arrive, but honestly the wait wasn't that long. Braised short rib ravioli were petite and al dente to his preference, but I couldn't deny the savory coat of brasato sauce. The black angus tartare and crumbled quail egg made the manzo a filling appetizer. Overall, it was a rich plate with a generous amount of gelatinous bone marrow and small cubes of beef that led to the consumption of my fourth piece of table bread. Balsamic drizzle and bone marrow powder complemented the flavors nicely, with a few garnishing microgreens to cut in some fresh notes. Lamb chop was cooked to medium as requested, and that licorice rub is crazy genius. The wedge of lamb sausage and roasted artichoke were nice, and I was all about the parsnip puree soaking up the juices. The merluzzo was a complex dish that in certain bites I loved, and other bites were a little too intense. The polenta had set and was boldly truffled, which eclipsed the moist and flakey black cod. Perfectly scaled, soft skin. I still prefer sea urchin raw. Desserts were delicious, and this is coming from a picky sweet tooth. Each was just big enough to share between two. Espresso creme brulee wasn't too rich, with a light garnish of cinnamon whipped cream and a wee chocolate almond biscotti. Carrot cake was my favorite-- candied pecan streusel crumbs added texture to the airy cake, with the right proportion of whipped mascarpone and a thin strip of carrot poached in simple syrup until almost soft enough to cut with a fork. I was disappointed to see that the truffled polenta didn't make it into my doggybag, but the floating busgirl included everything else on my plate. A block from Metro Center and metered street parking in the area if valet parking isn't your style. Pre-theatre and half-bottle wine menus are a bonus. Clean bathrooms by the bar. We reserved a table at Tosca from the high reviews on Yelp and the recommendation of the concierge at The Ritz Carlton. It was for my partners 21st birthday dinner and he wanted something FABULOUS! Well, I figured this place would be fabulous. We were looking at something similar to Osteria 177 on Main Street in Annapolis - and this place was near the same quality, high service and ambience. The only downside of the evening was the weather. It was the Thursday night snow storm that was much heavier when we were driving from Annapolis to Washington. The restaurant phoned me to confirm our reservation and to tell us they were closing early due to the weather. When we arrived, there were only two other tables and about 25 servers standing around - which was nice. They seemed somewhat rushed and flustered due to the weather, but I could understand that. The foods was easy to chose from the menu. Simple, but yet very tasteful choices. The lobster ravioli was the best I think. I ordered the halibut and it was a HUGE portion. The cosmopolitans were delicious and what made me the happiest is they actually asked for my ID when ordering a drink! :) I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. What a terrific spot in DC. High end service, attention to detail and exceptional food. It is the real deal.... Starters consisted of half portions of pasta, a concept I loved. The Rabbit ragu pappardelle was a nice portion with lots of delicious rabbit. What set it apart was the light texture, and the white wine ragu was a good way to keep the dish substantial but not overpowering. The veal chop with greens was the best I have ever had. I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. The thickness was the challenge and while it was not charred on the outside it was cooked to the fright degree and the taste was fantastic. Some sort of glaze may have been part of the sealing of the meat to allow it to cook that way but the meat was cooked perfectly and the taste combination was perfection. Wow. Overall superb service and great attention but not overpowering attention. Will be back! read more

Had a girls' trip to DC to go to a concert. We came up early so we could do a little shopping, have lunch and just wander around. We were looking for somewhere to have lunch and on Yelp found Tosca with its great reviews. Approaching the restaurant, we couldn't see in, so couldn't tell if it was open, but alas it was. Swanky is the way I'd describe the decor. My friend and I were dressed casually and I was unsure about whether we were meeting the dress code. The hostess said we were fine and not to worry. We were sat at a 2 top close to the bar and were quickly greeted and bread was brought. After perusing the wine list, we settled on a Chianti--after all, it is Italian food. Our server filled us in on the specials, all of which sounded awesome. My friend picked a tortellini special that had ricotta and peas with a pea purée and a beet purée. I settled on a tuna crudo appetizer and the filet with kale. I tried the pasta and was impressed with how tasty these little dumplings were. The purée perfectly complemented the pasta. The tuna was spectacular. It was served with a salad of shaved asparagus and a few drops of spicy mustard. This was the best tuna I've ever had. Everything was perfectly seasoned. My Friend isn't a fan of tuna but said she'd give it a second try after tasting this dish. It was made, by the way, with big eye tuna. The filet was also perfect. The kale was sautéed with shallots and was super good. For dessert, my friend ordered an espresso creme brûlée. The server made it special by adding birthday decorations and we didn't even ask him to do it. Tosca definitely makes the list of places to eat in DC for me.
