Met up my Yelp twin (same birthday!) here recently Friday evening. Didn't have reservations but managed to grab two seats at the bar. Chic vibe, lots of red decor, and dim lit inside--good place for date night with a significant other or with friends. Food was pretty good! Started off with the Provolone Garlic Bread--crispy and flavorful. Tried two pastas: (1) Spaghetti Chitarra alle Vongole--loaded with lots of baby clams, with a thicker white wine sauce which I preferred, and (2) Spicy Rigatoni alla Vodka--the speck meat made it more salty, gave it a deep savory flavor, enjoyed this pasta more. Cocktails were okay, we got Lychee Little Pearl, "Cool As A..." and Lychee Martini. Note: street parking isn't the easiest to find but there is a paid parking lot about a block away. read more

I swore I posted this review already. We visit DC probably 3 times yearly and always stay at the same hotel, which is walking distance to this restaurant. I visited here alone due to significant others were not invited to my husband's company party. I planned to have a nice night on my own and I chose Sfoglina to do that. I was craving Fettuccine Alfredo so that also added to my choice. I did not have a reservation and decided to dine at the bar, around 8pm. I was the only patron seated at the bar and was greeted shortly after sitting. I ordered a glass of Montepulciano and reviewed the menu, The bartender was attentive at first and engaged in conversation but later was not so present and engaged. I started with a Caesar salad, which was larger than I expected. The dressing was very rich and more fishy than I usually like. I had to inquire about Fettuccine Alfredo because I did not see it on the menu but saw it in pictures from others on Yelp. I was told it could be done so I ordered it for an entree. I did not enjoy it at al. I grew up in NYC and eating genuine Italian food so I was disappointed with this dish. It lacked flavor and the texture was totally off. Maybe this is why it was no longer on the menu? I attempted to order another glass of Montepulciano and I was informed they did not have any more in stock. The bartender suggested another wine, which was okay but not as good. The prices were expected to be high but I think it was overpriced for what it was. read more

I have nothing but beautiful things to say about my experience at Sfoglina Downtown. Reservations are highly recommended. My husband and I were originally booked at another Italian restaurant in DC for our anniversary, but after receiving a glowing recommendation from a family member the same day, we decided to switch--and luckily snagged a 7:45 PM reservation. We arrived about 30 minutes early, planning to sit at the bar while we waited. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by the host. Even though we were early, she checked on our table and let us know the current party was finishing up. Within minutes, the manager came over to personally welcome us and offered complimentary prosecco--which was honestly the best I've ever had. At the bar, the bartender immediately acknowledged us, offered water, and made us feel genuinely welcome. In DC, that's not always the case when you're just waiting for a table--but here, the hospitality never dropped off. We were seated early around 7:30, and our waiter, Oscar, was fantastic. His recommendations were spot on. We loved the prosecco so much that we ordered a bottle, and even then, the manager thoughtfully poured a small sample again before serving--such a great touch. A wine chiller followed promptly. For appetizers, we had the burrata and garlic bread with ricotta--both were rich, indulgent, and absolutely divine. For entrées, we ordered the beef ragu and chicken parmesan. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful and rich--honestly, the kind of food that has you sitting back like "wow" after every bite. The service and attention to detail were some of the best we've ever experienced dining out. Our water glasses were never empty--not once--and the same went for our prosecco. In fact, we never poured either our Acqua Panna or our wine the entire night. That level of attentiveness is rare. Dessert was chef's kiss--a chocolate cake paired with a complimentary vanilla strawberry ice cream that instantly reminded me of childhood, but in an elevated way. You know when food feels nostalgic but still refined? That's exactly what it was. Another standout detail: when they cleared our plates, they gave us small ticket stubs to retrieve our leftovers at the front. No clutter, no packing at the table--just seamless. We were checked on throughout the evening by multiple staff members, all warm, friendly, and attentive without ever being intrusive. And to top it off, the next day we received a lovely email from the manager thanking us for dining with them. The level of service was truly exceptional--and this is coming from a couple who collectively spent over 15 years working in hospitality as servers, hosts, bartenders, and bussers. First time here had higher expectations than what I had. I ordered the tagliatelle arrabiata with meatballs as an entree, it came out with two meatballs that weren't cooked at all. The inside was bright pink and mushy I took a bite and spit it out. It was beyond gross, I let the server know he immediately took the place and apologized. Then a manager came by in a loud voice and barked at me at how the don't serve food that's not cooked he was upset I explained it was mush, pink and cold not warm just cold like cold ground beef, he wasn't nice at all he argued they don't serve undercooked food he said he would bring another dish . I sat outside for one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in awhile. Top notch dishes - spicy rigatoni alla vodka is an absolute must. Visited for lunch with the team, prix fixe menu. Staff was friendly and efficient. Everything was tasty. Arugula salad with shaved butternut squash and tender grilled calamari served over a romesco sauce were served family style, both very good. The grilled branzino with puttanesca sauce was perfectly cooked. It's served a la carte, and I bet it would have been even better with a side veg. I'm not usually a fan of chocolate cake, but the capri chocolate cake is out of this world- a flourless cake that is more the texture of mousse. Save room. We had an early dinner (5:30pm) on a Thursday. The service was great. Ironically I had made a reservation and added my wife has a slight basil allergy. Most places have asked if we have any allergies and they did not when ordering. We did order the chicken parm and spaghetti, which both had basil. I would add that I ordered the braised short rib agnolotti which was some of the best I've ever had. If you love a creamy rib ravioli style plate, I highly recommend. The manager came and checked on us which was appreciated. We did order tiramisu which was a little disappointing, as it had a chocolate cake base instead of lady fingers. But we also received a soft serve vanilla/strawberry dessert compliments of the restaurant. Overall great dining experience. Pappardelle: 4/5 - Quite tasty and not a huge portion. I would have loved to have some meatballs with this, maybe next time I'll get some on the side. Overall, a delightful (albeit pricey) experience. We started w the mozzarella trio, which in hindsight was way too much for two. I liked two of the cheeses - can't recall the one that was meh. The rosemary bread was some of the best bread I've had in my entire life. Full stop. If that was the only thing I could eat for the rest of my life, I'd be ok with it. For mains, I had the braised beef agnolotti - good but just a touch too salty. My friend had squid ink pasta and really enjoyed it. The service was great. Not bougie fold your napkin while you're in the restroom bougie but perfect hand offs and plate clearing, and "we'll box this for you and put it out of sight by the host stand and give you a coat check ticket so you can pick it up on your way out" bougie. And they had a coat check 10/10. The one downside- y'all have lost your minds w the cost of drinks. Seriously. Please examine that menu. $80 for a bottle of Sauvignon blanc that I can pick up at Total Wine for $22? Please. Also, the fact that the place was only 60% full at best on a Friday night (we were there from 6-9 pm so I'm confident in my assessment) tells you something and the food is not the issue. read more

The patio is wonderful on a nice day. I decided to sit down as I was walking home from an appointment and have a bowl of pasta on the patio. It's great for people viewing and to kind of sit and have a relaxing moment. The service was great and I found her to be extremely attentive. Typically, when there are a few parties on the patio, it can be harder to get the service attention, but I did not find this to be the case. I did find the food to just be OK. I didn't find the pasta to be particularly spectacular (see below). I would not be opposed to trying this pasta house again. I will note, they did have someone there to help customers order pasta (what he said, I'm not sure what that actually meant). I did find this person to be somewhat of a nuisance. After I ordered and received my food, he continued to come up and chat with me. It seemed like every time I was about to take a bite he started talking to me so my food grew cold. I cannot say enough good things about Sfoglina Downtown!! We have been loyal customers of Fiola and Fiola Mare for years. Now, we're big fans of Sfoglina too. (Despite still having trouble saying the name - lol). We had a lovely dinner for my 40th birthday in one of their private rooms last night. The room was decorated nicely, with a comfortable table for the 14 of us. We had an amazing 4 course meal - starting with their tender, flavorful meatballs, delicate salad with goat cheese and tomatoes and their rosemary bread with whipped ricotta. Everything was served family style which was super fun and interactive. Then came the pasta course - with cheesy and peppery cacio e pepe and short rib filled Agnolotti with the most amazing truffle sauce. Everyone at the table was commenting on how perfectly cooked the pasta was and how good they were. I agree!! Then we moved onto our segundi - branzino with a puttanesca sauce and hangar steak. Again, the fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was so flavorful! Finally, we had their luscious tiramisu with the most delicious layers and cream. Probably best I've ever had (but it kept me up ALL night - true to its name, pick me up!). The service was impeccable - the servers so attentive and helpful. Sfoglina is always a good time! This visit, I stopped by for dinner with friends and we had a lovely experience. The atmosphere is warm, intimate and inviting - perfect for catching up with friends or for a nice date night. Our server was on point, providing great service with plenty of charm and humor, making sure sure we had everything we needed and offering great suggestions throughout our meal. As always, the food did not disappoint. I started with the Tuscan tomato soup - it was lovely! The warm rosemary bread with whipped ricotta perfectly complemented it. We visited Sfoglina during the week and had a good dining experience for the most part. We were able to get reservations at the downtown DC location (they have several locations around the district). We were immediately seated once we arrived for our reservation, which was nice. The ambiance was really cool and the menus added so much character. Not to mention the food smelled delicious! We didn't have long to wait before we were greeted by our waiter, Amond. Now, this is where I began to have an issue. We clearly didn't know how to navigate as it was our first time dining there. He immediately asked us if we wanted to order drinks (immediately after sitting). There was no acknowledgment or time for us to even browse so we asked for a moment. When he returned, my friend said that she wanted a sweeter wine in which he recommended the Falanghina. I felt rushed so I just ordered the same. We received our drinks and the menu was explained to us regarding the restaurant week options and that we could order those along with regular menu items. We went during winter restaurant week so we were pleased that it was still an option. When the waiter came back, he asked immediately what we wanted to eat. There was no Intro into the menu, he didn't ask about food allergies nor did he read the room on us still trying to figure things out. At that time, I advised him to slow down, advised him of my friend's peanut allergy and my pork restriction, advised him that this was our very first time dining there and asked for food recommendations. It was only THEN that he engaged with us to recommend items off of the menu. We ordered the rosemary bread with whipped ricotta, Caesar salads, the short rib agnolotti and the Radiatore cacio de Pepe with chicken. The bread was 10/10. The salad was 8.5/10 (could have used less Caesar) and the pasta was 9/10. Overall, we really enjoyed our food. The dining experience was honestly really good. The reason for my review is for the service. I will give the overall score a 3.5 star because of that. I really did not appreciate being rushed by the waiter and we both agreed that our experience likely would have been a tad different had he just slowed down a bit and offered a more friendly approach. It was a busy night but not busy enough to rush your patrons. He warmed up to us towards the end of the night but by that time my dining experience was done. Everything little charge felt sneaky. Brought over a$9 glass bottle of 'still water' when asked for water. No mention of a charge or if the water was special. Ordered the mafalde al telefono. Server oscar reccomended to add the shrimp but it is a 'little charge' extra. Its was more than half the pasta. When our original dinner plans fell through, we spontaneously found Sfoglina and it turned out to be a great pick. This is more of an upscale Italian restaurant and it appeared to be pretty popular with the after-work crowd as most customers arrived in business-casual attire. Service was terrific from the beginning. Our waiter welcomed us and kindly described the menu's specials in detail, while also mentioning his top 3 dishes, which definitely influenced us! Throughout dinner, our waters were refilled countless times and we appreciated the staff's attentiveness. Our group of four decided on the "Pasta Tasting of 3", which includes three pastas of your choosing to share family-style for $85. If we each purchased a pasta individually, it would have exceeded that price, so this is a fair deal if you are dining with others. 1) PAPPARDELLE: My favorite of the three, the al dente pasta was fully covered in a hearty Ragu Bolognese sauce that I believe contained a mix of beef and pork. While a tad salty, I still really enjoyed it and the flavor of the tomato sauce shined. 2) SPICY SQUID INK TAGLIATELLE: Squid ink pasta was tossed in garlic and olive oil, served with Gulf Shrimp and topped with Burricotta cheese & crumbles of fried bread. Despite its nice presentation, I was underwhelmed by this dish since I didn't find it spicy at all and didn't taste any garlic either. We mixed the Burricotta cheese around to coat the pasta, which added a nice creaminess, but overall, I just felt that something was missing. 3) STUFFED FARFALLE (menu special): Ricotta-stuffed bowtie pasta was swimming in a black truffle and "spring sage" sauce, topped with pine nut gremolata. The menu doesn't state this, but the sauce surprisingly had a strong lemon flavor. I am not a fan of citrus, so I had only a taste of this one, but my dinner companions enjoyed it. + SAUTEED BROCCOLINI ($14): I loved this! The broccolini was tender and tossed in garlic, olive oil and Calabrian chili. It was delicious on its own, but enhanced by a super fresh and herby pesto which also had a subtle heat. + PISTACHIO CAKE ($16): Delicious and can be easily shared between at least two people. The cake was moist with a silky pistachio mousse piped on top. The middle had a layer of tart raspberry jam. So good and the perfect level of sweetness. + SFOGLINA TIRAMISU ($16): The coffee-soaked sponge cake had a good strength to it, which balanced well with the layer of Mascarpone and huge dollop of whipped cream on top. It was light and definitely a memorable tiramisu. Despite this being a splurge, we were pleased with our dining experience as a whole. While I personally would have chosen a couple different pastas, our selection was a combination of preferences among my group. Make sure you order dessert! read more

I don't think the container did it any favors, so restaurant served version may be better! Caesar was fantastic and comes with fried capers (which aren't my fave, but really did the trick here). Honestly, some of the best past I've ever eaten. Every single dish is perfectly executed. What an amazing dining experience! I started with the Grilled Spiced Wild Calamari with Almond Romesco, and Charred Red Peppers, and OMG- it's the best calamari I've had. So perfectly tender with just the perfect char, and the romesco and peppers perfectly round out and spice the dish. I followed with the pappardelle bolognese, with perfectly tender pasta in the richest of meat sauces. Honestly, I could eat this every single day. It was utterly delicious! I finished up my evening with a slice of the most decadent chocolate hazelnut cake you could ever imagine. It was so rich, I had to get most of it to go and eat it in my hotel room later that evening. One of my favorite DC restaurants! read more

We were celebrating a birthday and had a reservation for a party of 9. Resy lets you book the large party online without having to call or go through extra hoops which I found very convenient. When we arrived we were seated right away. We shared two bottles of wine for the table. One of the bottles we ordered, the moscato, was delicious. We also shared two orders of the garlic bread for the table which was good as well. For mains I ordered the pappardelle which was a Ragu bolognese. It was ok, I didn't find it to be as good as I hoped. Other dishes ordered were the potato gnocchi, vodka pasta, fettuccine Alfredo, carbonara, and radiatore arrabiata. When our dishes arrived we requested crushed red pepper, salt and pepper to be brought to the table, but it didn't end up coming till everyone was almost done with their dishes. Overall I think theres better Italian food in DC, but this wasn't bad. The fact that they were able to accommodate for our large party was a major pro, and our waiter was very friendly. Made a reservation at Sfoglina yesterday evening. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by the kindest man--he literally goes out of his way to make sure your experience is top-notch! Our server was Alejandro, and he was beyond wonderful and kind. The food? Out of this world delicious. My husband had the Braised Beef Short Rib Agnolotti--so good, especially with the little hints of black truffle. I had the Bolognese Pappardelle and oh my goodness, it was incredible! We ordered cappuccinos--wonderful. The Nonna Palmina's Meatballs? So good. Order those for sure. We also tried the Mozzarella Bar with crushed tomatoes, and it was fresh and flavorful. For dessert, we had the Piemonte chocolate gianduja cake and the tiramisu--both amazing. The peach and vanilla sorbet swirl was also so refreshing and light. I ordered the garlic bread and grilled octopus as the appetizer. The grilled octopus was flavorful but it was still on the chewy side, I almost broke a nail cutting it. The garlic bread came with a dipping sauce and it was very tasty. For the main course I had the Pappadella with a glass of white wine and mocktail. The pasta sauce was yummy and not too salty, but without the tomatoes the flavor got a little monotone. Adding more tomatoes and basil would be great. The texture of the pasta was good and it picked up a lot of the sauce very well. A good match with the sauce. - Monkfish: My mom got this and we approved (we're Japanese so picky with fish). She really enjoyed it and said it was better than expected. The sauce had an interesting texture and I thought the flavor was okay. The fish tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. - Peach & vanilla swirl gelato: This was okay. I probably would have enjoyed the two flavors separately but they didn't match very well. Been to the Van Ness location many times, but this is my first time at their downtown location, the former Casa Luca. The menu is the same for all of their locations. I do like the interior, but it's missing the charm of the Van Ness location. Went during Christmas week but was surprised how empty it was on a Saturday night. Stuck with my favorites, Grilled Spiced Wild Calamari to start and the Lobster Squid Ink Tagiolini for entree. I like how they served the lobster on the half shell. They both were excellent. My wife had the Sfoglina Caesar and Roast duck breast special. She really enjoyed her meal. The pistachio cake and swirl were a treat to end the meal. The vibe was awesome and would definitely love to come back to try some other dishes. We slipped in for Happy Hour and tbh was a little disappointed at the selection. Wish they had more drinks and foods available! The wine was good; the spritz was better. The goat cheese with bread was good! We were still hungry so ordered off of the main menu: The tagliatelle was ok. Nothing to write home about. If you usually like creamy sauces, you may find it bland. To begin, I have extensive allergies and the restaurant was able to confirm that the ingredients to the pasta were safe for me! The waitstaff was great and even brought my friend a birthday dessert. One of the best meals of my life here. The service is impeccable and we were assisted by, no exaggeration, at least 6 different staff members in the duration of our short visit. From offering new flatware before our entrees, to consistently removing finished dishes and topping off water, and even a courtesy "splash" of extra wine, can't say enough about the extremely high caliber service here. But what truly made the night was the food. Oh my gosh, amazing. We have eaten in narrow streets of Trastevere, Rome in Italy with amazing pasta, and Sfoglina's pasta is exactly on par with that. Close your eyes and you're eating pasta outdoors over candlelight in Italy on a warm summer night. That's the feeling I got from the meal at Sfoglina. The pappardelle bolognese had a rich, hearty sauce with complexity in flavor, but it comes through as an accompaniment of the star of the dish, which is the actual pasta. The many ribbons of fresh pasta were al dente, chewy with a bite, and such good flavor. The dish was salty to the point of knowing it was salty, but not so salty that you ever thought it was too salty. Literally just perfect. After such a comforting dish I decided to top it off with one of the most incredible tiramisus of my life. Rich flavor of coffee and chocolate with creamy bites of marscapone and cake. We also tried the apple cider sorbetto, which is seasonal, and it was also incredible. Taste like Granny Smith apples, silky and creamy even though it had no dairy, with the faintest touch of cinnamon. This was one the top 5 ever meals in my life for sure, and one to remember for many many years to come. read more

A large group of us easily made reservations for a Friday night and they gave us a somewhat private room which was nice. For appetizers, we ordered the grilled focaccia and spicy calabrese nduja, grilled spicy calamari, rosemary bread, and caesar salad. Everything was good, and I would recommend the grilled spicy calamari as it's the only dish I would get again: it's slightly spicy, and flavored well. The other dishes were done right, but nothing to talk about. For my entree, I got the bucatini alla carbonara and my partner got the linguine alle vongole. The carbonara was rich, and pretty decent. I did enjoy the pasta itself though. The linguine alle vongole was decent, and didn't really stand out. I got the "tuscan dream", which I did not really enjoy. It barely had any lychee flavor to it. The kitchen also gifted us gelato which was a kind gesture. Overall, a bit pricey for the portions, with mainly slightly above average dishes. I would rate it a 3.5/5, but I can't get myself to round it up to a 4/5. read more
