Okay so zero stars is not an option, otherwise that's what I'd give 'em! I'm very surprised to even have to write a really bad review of this place, since I've been there a few times over the years & previously gotten adequate service, but a few days ago, they blew any chance of me returning, because of really rude & downright nasty treatment from the owner, Les. Here's the sitch. I needed the battery replaced in my car FOB and also a valet key for my car. The key is an expensive order & I was referred to go there by Yuri, from Oasis Car Body & Sales in Skokie, where I had purchased my car a few months earlier (by the way, that's a great place--very nice and clean used cars at more than fair prices). Yuri had suggested that if I went to Rite Lock and told them he sent me, they'd likely give me a discount, perhaps 20 percent. So that's what I did. When I told the owner, Les; he looked me squarely in the eye and said in a very rude & dismissive tone, "He can say anything he wants!" Taken aback a little, & not quite understanding, I asked Les if he would honor that. He coldly said "No." When asked why not, his response..."He can say anything he wants, this is America; but I don't have to do it." I was certainly very surprised by this rude answer & the way it was delivered. Brought a chill over me, since it sounded so...yes, Trump-ish! Even if he wasn't going to give me the discount, he could have said so in a much nicer and more courteous manner. The degree of his rude dismissiveness was to the point that I left immediately & don't plan to return! I had always found that the local businesses tried to help each other out with referrals and such. When talking to a neighboring merchant (I frequent quite a few in that area), I told them about it & they said that Les was likely in a bad mood because all his employees had just quit because they were being grossly underpaid. Ha! That didn't surprise me at all, but why take it out on a good customer?! I don't know and won't say it was racially motivated (I'm African American), but it kinda felt like it. Bottom line, I'm done with them and suggest that you too find a locksmith that at least acts like they want & appreciate your business.

It was an extra $3.50 for the leather fob.

Les came out and basically performed a miracle on my storefront doors which everyone said could not have new locks installed.

10/10; would highly recommend!…read more I hired the Danny Keys team when I moved into a new house and needed locks changed. Initial contact: They were extremely responsive when I reached out and I loved being able to schedule online (and there was a solid amount of availability. At the appointment: When it came time for the appointment, the technician (who was on time and fully communicative) went above and beyond in the best way. Not only did the technician answer my 100 questions and concerns about smart locks, but he also advised me my options with different locks throughout the property to balance safety and cost. I thought they would only replace the locks but they also were able to replace the doornobs, offering several appealing options in the style I wanted. They had a variety of options for locks too - regular door locks, deadbolts, and smart lock varieties. They even cleaned off the door all around the doornob because it was dirty and looked a little gross! My biggest joy has to be that they were able to use the same locks on multiple doors so we could use one key for all the doors, which is a lifesaver because I was startingbri appear as a janitor with so many keys, lol. After it was all done, they made me a bunch of copies of the key, which was helpful and honestly unexpected because I thought I'd have to go to Lowes after to do that myself given the million and one copies we needed for various family members. Vibes: it was such a seamless experience with an incredibly friendly, helpful, technician who treated my house with respect (eg no outside shoes inside) and was patient with my questions/concerns. Cost: Pricing was all competitive with other companies I considered. Overall: An excellent experience; I'll only be using Danny Keys for my future lock change needs and recommending them to my friends and neighbors!

During the first visit, I was given the option of either re-keying my existing locks or replacing them entirely. I chose to have the locks re-keyed, thinking that would be sufficient. What I didn't realize was that re-keying can result in issues with how the key fits and operates in the lock. That service cost $900. Unfortunately, the new keys frequently got stuck halfway into the locks, making it difficult to unlock the doors. The company returned and spent about an hour adjusting the locks to improve the fit. I was not charged for that follow-up visit. While the keys worked better afterward, they still weren't operating as smoothly as they should. So, after another month of continuing to struggle with the keys, I decided to replace all of the doorknobs and deadbolts instead. That service cost an additional $1,299. The one positive throughout this experience was that the staff was always friendly and courteous.

After not getting a reply to my inquiry via their website, I called and told the woman who answered exactly what I needed (two doors needing one deadbolt on each, new holes drilled). She told me the service fee was $29 and that a locksmith would call me back. It did not take long for a locksmith named "Ron" to call me and offered to come that day. I told him exactly what I needed and he quoted me $185 per door plus $80 per lock. I agreed. I said "Plus the $29 service fee?" He said he'd waive that if he did the job. He arrived several hours later and at first said he couldn't do the job I asked (door too thin) and tried to convince me of other options but then decided he in fact could do the job. At that point he said $289 per door and $80 per lock! I said we agreed on $185 and he claimed he had said "starting at $185" which is not true because if he did, I would have asked more questions. He told me that this new price was the going rate, and that it's not much more than he originally quoted ($200 more) and eventually asked if $269 per door would be acceptable instead. I said no. He told me to think about it and I agreed. But at this point, his friendly demeanor was gone. I had planned to ask for a quote for a less pressing job (switching out doorknobs to the original antique ones removed years ago). He said it was impossible and that I must have new doors. I was perplexed because these were the original doors and he decided to "show me why it wouldn't work" by removing the handles/lock from one door but stayed silent with no replies as I asked him clarification questions. At that point he said I owed him $169 for the service fee "because he had done work." I said I didn't ask him to remove the handles/lock and that the service fee quoted was only $29. He was very angry at this point and asked me what I wanted to pay. I said I'd pay the $29 (just to get him to leave as the tension was very uncomfortable at this point). I Zelle'd Ron the $29 and at that point, I realized the money was going to "SafeKey" (his own business) thanks to this name on the Zelle account and not going to "North Shore Locksmith." I called North Shore Locksmith after he left and the guy who answered wouldn't help me understand why SafeKey had come instead of North Shore Locksmith but assured me that "upper management" would call me back. The next day, no return call. I called North Shore Locksmith again in the morning and again near end of day, each time the person telling me someone would call me back and days later, still no call. Very odd "bait-and-switch" incident where North Shore Locksmith gave my job to a random locksmith, who in turn, "baits-and-switches" on his quoted costs, pretending there was a misunderstanding on the initial quote. I had hoped this was all a misunderstanding with North Shore Locksmith but since North Shore Locksmith won't contact me, I'll never know. Since then, I've gotten quotes from other area locksmiths who are more affordable than even Ron's initial quote.
