I called and talked to Andy, told him that I was looking for a bolt lock and a new knob that uses the same key for a house from the 60s. He said that he would get back with me. Now he was up front and said the knob lock you have was best thing out in the 60s why don't you just stay with the bolt lock. I agreed. Andy came to my house and within 45 minutes he was done. DO NOT USE THIS UNPROFESSIONAL COMPANY!!!! It has been a MONTH and after dozens of phone calls they still have not completed the work. They cancel at the last minute repeatedly and have ZERO respect for their customers time. I just bought my house on August 7th and the seller didn't give me all the keys to the house so we had random people walking up and opening mailboxes -- keys which were to all be surrendered to us at closing. I told Rite Lock about this and made very clear the URGENCY of changing the locks on the house for SAFETY reasons. They came and looked at the house and said they'd have a quote for me ready after the weekend. It was not ready then. I had to call repeatedly to get it. They kept telling me they'd have it to me by the end of the day. EVERY DAY. FOR A WEEK. It took them 2 WEEKS to finally come do the work after they stalled and stalled with excuse after excuse for why the quote wasn't getting to me when they said it would and why they had to reschedule appointments because they just "don't have enough time to get to me after all." It's like they think I have infinite time to just wait around for them to then forget they have an appointment with me so I can keep my home secure. They don't care. Then when they finally did, they only did half the job and said they'd be back by the end of the week to finish up the rest. After not receiving a call from them to let me know when they were planning on coming back out, I finally decided to call them and schedule a second date. Today was that day. And guess what: They just cancelled on me AGAIN, an hour AFTER the appointment time! And the work they did do is messed up and some of the locks don't even work. Turn the key and it gets stuck and the lock won't open. I will have to have much of this work redone. This whole time my house has been virtually unlocked for whoever has the keys that the seller didn't surrender to me. At this point this is on Rite Lock. They knew about the urgency and safety concern and it has taken them a MONTH and are still trying to make excuses for their unprofessional business practices. I told them at the beginning "if you don't have enough time I can go with another company but be honest with me." They said "no we have time we want your business we're sorry." Lies. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. They are liars and don't respect anyone's time. I tried to be understanding with them and even waited and waited and tried to be nice and good-natured, but this is the LAST STRAW. If they try to charge me for the "work" they did on my place I will go to court to fight it. They have refused to treat me like a paying customer every step of the way -- so I will NOT be paying them a single cent. Every little thing with this company is like pulling teeth. We had a new door & frame installed, but it was very difficult to push the door to the point that it actually latched. We didn't want anything more to do with the carpenter who installed it and called Rite Lock. The serviceman charged $143 for 15 minutes of work. Within a couple of weeks, the door would not latch again. We called Rite Lock again. This time, he charged $122.50 for 10-15 minutes of work. We paid again, begrudgingly, but in retrospect, we should have refused. Clearly, they didn't do a proper job the first time. In any case, $265 is outrageous for the work involved. read more

My lock was probably nearly 100 years old and it had begun to show its age. Obviously a new lock was likely not going to fit the space exactly. Okay so zero stars is not an option, otherwise that's what I'd give 'em! I'm very surprised to even have to write a really bad review of this place, since I've been there a few times over the years & previously gotten adequate service, but a few days ago, they blew any chance of me returning, because of really rude & downright nasty treatment from the owner, Les. Here's the sitch. I needed the battery replaced in my car FOB and also a valet key for my car. The key is an expensive order & I was referred to go there by Yuri, from Oasis Car Body & Sales in Skokie, where I had purchased my car a few months earlier (by the way, that's a great place--very nice and clean used cars at more than fair prices). Yuri had suggested that if I went to Rite Lock and told them he sent me, they'd likely give me a discount, perhaps 20 percent. So that's what I did. When I told the owner, Les; he looked me squarely in the eye and said in a very rude & dismissive tone, "He can say anything he wants!" Taken aback a little, & not quite understanding, I asked Les if he would honor that. He coldly said "No." When asked why not, his response..."He can say anything he wants, this is America; but I don't have to do it." I was certainly very surprised by this rude answer & the way it was delivered. Brought a chill over me, since it sounded so...yes, Trump-ish! Even if he wasn't going to give me the discount, he could have said so in a much nicer and more courteous manner. The degree of his rude dismissiveness was to the point that I left immediately & don't plan to return! I had always found that the local businesses tried to help each other out with referrals and such. When talking to a neighboring merchant (I frequent quite a few in that area), I told them about it & they said that Les was likely in a bad mood because all his employees had just quit because they were being grossly underpaid. Ha! That didn't surprise me at all, but why take it out on a good customer?! I don't know and won't say it was racially motivated (I'm African American), but it kinda felt like it. Bottom line, I'm done with them and suggest that you too find a locksmith that at least acts like they want & appreciate your business. read more

Excellent and prompt service provided by these locksmiths. They schedule appointments and arrive on time. In addition, they reveal their prices before they come to the job site. They had made an installation of a faulty lock done by another company whom I had problems in the past. I wished I called them in the past. Pricing reflects the labor cost of other locksmith companies but I saved alot of money from them. Other company made extra charges even though their locksmith was late for almost 3 hours. I needed a copy of my keys and discovered the place near me has limited hours. Looked up other options and found Rite- and I'm glad I did. My old place would take a day to copy keys. Rite took 5 minutes! I was a bit flabbergasted when I asked what time I could pick them up and he said right now. The owner is very friendly and I felt very good about supporting his business. There is a large showroom of safes as well if that's what you need. A note: I parked in the back of the building and entered through the rear door. At first I thought I wasn't supposed to enter that way because you basically walk into the workshop portion of the space. But, rest assured, it's a true entrance. Unreliable and unresponsive My front door lock was broken and I called Rite Lock & Safe. They came at the promised time and took it apart. The tech decided that parts were necessary and that they would have to be ordered. In all fairness they did not charge me ...but promised me they would return with parts soon. Some SIX weeks have passed and I have called at LEAST five times. Every call is met with "Oh, I will look into that and I assure I will call you back today" and there is no follow up. I have even asked them to tell me if they cannot find parts and I will move on elsewhere. I can take a hint and I will find someone else more reliable but it is amazing to me that they have such disregard. They have repeatedly ignored me when it would have been so simple to just say they could not repair it or the parts were not available. For this reason I would not recommend them. read more

I called one day I asked about getting a Honda pilot key cut and the guy told me it probably had at a chip inside the key and needed to be programmed and it would probably be $65 but if there's no chip in the key it's only a $4.95 key cut. He said he would have to scan the key to find out for sure. I go in the next day the guy takes one look at the key and tells me there's no chip in it and it's $40 to cut they key. When I told him what the guy on the phone said he said I must've called the wrong place because no one here took that phone call and then he asked the owner "did you talk to this guy?" "no I didn't talk to him". I walked out and they didn't really care that they lost business for lying to a potential customer. read more

Went in to get a new deadbolt and have it keyed to match the other door lock. They explained how the keys I had were poorly cut which is true since I always had to insert the key just the right amount. They suggested to leave the deadbolt keyed as is and bring the other lock to have it deleted - which saved me money actually. I had several copies made and all were perfect. The staff was friendly, even installing a thick door kit for me in the dead bolt. Their selection of safes is amazing and they have a lot of antique locks and safes on display too. When we moved into a new house in Skokie we, of course, wanted to change the locks. Several locksmiths we called didn't have anyone available to come out for several weeks. The gentleman was able to restore a very old key fixture and get it working properly on our back porch door. I had figured the fixture may be too old , and the wood on the door where it fits has some damage issues anyway, so I was even anticipating having to replace these old French doors. Owner listened to me and looked at the pix I took and had me remove the fixture and bring it in on a subsequent visit.
