Can't say enough about the service at River City. I visited the store with pictures of my existing wood burning fireplace, measurements of it and the TV I wanted to hang over it. Mike directed me to the electric fireplaces in his shop and advised me in the best type and size for hanging a TV above it. The price was fair and included the cost to demo out the existing brick hearth and fireplace insert; install of new unit; framing and electrical for the TV and drywall with texturing. I was very happy with the price and quality of the installation of my new electric fireplace, but it has been 5 months and the door kit is still pending. After this long, I would expect some service, but I had to call them to follow up and then when it finally came in, I had to call them twice just to try and schedule the installation. I purchased a gas burning fireplace on a Saturday from them. I was told I'd receive a call Tuesday to set up an appointment and it would be installed by the following weekend. I didn't receive a call so I called them a few days later. I was told in an unfriendly manner that I wasn't even on the list for installation and that they would call me back to arrange installation. Two days later, still no call. I called to cancel my order and they could have cared less. They were actually more expensive than other companies and have a terrible customer service. After numerous calls and emails trying to ask what is in stock and prices of logs, I still couldn't get an answer. We went in on Saturday looking for a gas fireplace insert. We have been shopping are are ready to buy. We were helped by the woman who was working at the desk. Another couple was being helped by the man who works there and they were getting lots of help and direction. Unfortunately that was not our experience. We are very happy with our Electric Dimplex fireplace insert. We originally went to a place in Rancho where we decided the exact insert we wanted. The bid we got from them seemed pretty high. We went into River City and the quote Mike gave us was quite a bit lower. The installer did a great job and we absolutely love the look. Our 16 year old shepherd loves it the most. We were ready to purchase a fireplace from them. We went back to the store to get quotes for the fireplaces we were interested in but Mike was out. Ester took our requests and said we would get an email with the quotes in the next day or two. After not hearing from them for a couple weeks I called back. Ester answered and told me they had been too busy but could get me the quote soon. I haven't heard from them since and it's been over a month. I guess they don't need more business. Based on earlier comments, I was vigilant about verifying my final cost, good thing I did because the prices I was quoted in store didn't match what my invoice said. These guys are terrible, and I can not recommend them at all. We bought a ~$3500 gas fireplace from these guys about 6 years ago. Back then the service was good and the fireplace was installed without a hitch. And now for our current story, which I still feel may have been a potential 'bait and switch' by River City Fireplace. Recently, we had our fan go out, and we decided to give River City Fireplace a call to service the fan. My wife was quoted $120 for service + $120 for the fan. From the phone call we made to set up the appointment, we assumed they had the information they needed to install the right fan. The fireplace technician came out to fix the part, and he mentioned that the fan he brought was the incorrect part. He mentioned the new part would be $250, and he would have to charge another $80 - $120 to come out again to re-service. My wife and I contacted Ester, and she mentioned the part was incorrect. She eventually offered to cut the price of the part to $120 but the re-service fee was not waived. We argued with them to stick with the original deal but the service guy was extremely rude and I didn't want him coming back in my house anyway. So, we got our money back and decided to go with a different company. When we worked with another fireplace company (with 5 star reviews on yelp), we got the part for $89 + $100 installation. What I learned: 1) Don't trust the service guy. He said we wouldn't be able to find a better deal in Sacramento. We definitely did find a better deal and better service. 2) Bad business... It is amazing to me that River City Fireplace and Barbecue didn't have this sale on file (even though it was 6 years old). I consider $3500 a luxury purchase, and River City Fireplace should have known exactly what fan we needed. Good service is potentially another big sale in the future. If this fireplace went out for good, don't you think we may be back to buy another expensive fireplace from River City Fireplace? 3) We got reamed by the fireplace technician when he checked the fan. He said we should clean the fireplace more because we have pets. My thing is.. why do they care what we do? They'll be making money on service whenever the fan goes out. If they continue to give us good service we'll come back again. 4) Trust Yelp. I should have looked at Yelp before making an immediate decision to go back to River City Fireplace. My wife wanted to give them a chance since we bought the fireplace from them. Boy were we wrong. Service was rude and the part was way overpriced. 5) The service technician did not accept credit cards even though he worked for the company. I thought this was suspicious (possible bait and switch?). AVOID! read more

A friend recommended using River City Fireplace to convert our wood burning fireplace into a gas log one. We hadn't done a lot of research before starting this project and Mike helped us navigate through all the choices and options. He went out of his way to make us happy with our choice including replacing the first system we purchased with another, simpler type when we discovered that we didn't like some of the features of the original gas log kit he installed. Purchased a gas fireplace insert from River City had a local licensed hvac contractor install the unit. Came out beautiful works great love it. After a couple months of use the battery pack for the remote thermostat under the firebox failed, that battery pack is plastic and is directly under the firebox and is negatively affected from the heat. I took the thermostat's battery pack to River City to chat with them about it. The person at the counter was immediately adversarial to taking care of the issue, told me that she was not going to warranty because I didn't use her contractor to install the unit. That upset me when i left she handed me a replacement battery pack she had right at the counter, i suspect River City knows these battery packs are problematic she had replacements at the counter. Everything was excellent until i had a problem, customers beware.....i don't suspect i will have anymore issues but i will not be a returning customer. Super disappointed i really liked these folks. Anthony is proud of his workmanship and does nice job with installation., However, Mike is disorganized and fails to follow-up with orders and pathetically slow in placing orders. This is my third built in BBQ unit since 1990, all of which have been incredible. My current unit had 15 years of use, just plain worn out and needed replacing. Did my homework, went to the expected places including the "backyard" store, home improvement stores, etc. River City BBQ had a unit that met my expectations (AOG 30"), at the best price in town by $$$$. Mike took the time to deliver the unit because my vehicle was too small. I took a weekend to replace my old unit and the outcome was great. No issue, no concerns, no questions. I'm extremely happy with the result. Do your homework before you go shopping for BBQs because the prices vary widely, the material and workmanship varies immensely, and the number of USA made grills are dwindling. And yes, warranties do fail when company's are bought or go out of business, just look at BBQ Galore. read more

I bought a very expensive Vermont Castings BBQ from here - complete with a 5 to 10 year warranty! When the inside began to rust, it became dangerous to use, so I called the business up because it was still under warranty. They came out, took photos, and I heard nothing. When I called back, they told me that Vermont Castings had been sold to another company, and that my warranty was null and void and they wouldn't repair it at all. Nice to see that they stand behind their products and take care of their customers. I replaced it with a Weber - which I bought somewhere else. Buyer beware. read more

We purchased the gas fireplace there 2.5 years ago and the sale/installation went well. The unit worked great during that time but broke down after 2.5 years. The control box itself (the 'brain' of the unit) went out, we called back River City but kept getting told they would check with the factory to see about the part and called us back, NEVER did call us back at all even after we called again 2-3 more times....If you are not going to service the unit or too busy to bother or whatever, just tell us the FIRST time instead of letting us hanging!!!! We finally gave us 'waiting' for them to call and called up a fireplace service only place and they were great/responsive...the unit is now fixed. ** You can buy the unit at River City (supposed I would provide good service too to make the $5000 sale), but good luck if you need follow up service or even just want a simple return call!!!!!!!! Apparently from other people's reviews, their non-responsiveness is a common practice for River City Fireplace. read more

Spent many hours online researching a replacement for my Weber Genesis 1000 that was 14 years old. Had a really hard time sorting out the higher end Stainless grills and finally found this shop showing and selling the Fire Magic andf AOG line from RH Peterson. Mike was very patient and helpful as I looked through each grill and priced them out. In the end, I went with an AOG, and Mike had the best price without haggling. We were told it would be 2 weeks, but when we hadn't heard back in 3 we called and found out part of the order had been delayed. Waited another week, still no call. Visited and picked up all but one portion that still was not in. We're told that there would be a call... went in almost 2 weeks after and the portion was in. Wow! We went to the Fulton Ave. location recently, and couldn't believe how unfriendly the sales person was! She acted as if our questions were annoying her, and when we explained to her what type of gas insert fireplace we liked, she advised us to go look online! We made the effort to go into her store and her attitude was like, "Come back when you know exactly what you want." She disappeared for several minutes and when I went to the counter to offer to give her measurements, she snapped, "I'm working on your quote right now," We were tempted to leave right then, but we waited for the quote. Compared to the other Fireside Shop we had come from, the quote was not very detailed at all (not itemized). The price was higher, and they couldn't do the work any time soon. I actually called them back the following day because I wanted the manager or owner to know how disappointing our experience was. I was shocked to discover that the lady we had dealt with was the owner! I told her about our experience and she said, "Well, there are other places that sell these [where you could go]." Unbelievable! We were prepared to spend over $5000 for a gas insert fireplace, and the owner of this place couldn't care less about our business! We had purchased an expensive barbeque there, and within the warranty period it began to rust and degrade. Contacted owners and the declined to honor the warranty because they told us that the company that made the barbeque had new owners even though it was still manufacturing and selling barbeques. What kind of business refuses to honor the warranty of the products it sells? They told us that we were out of luck - no apologies, no attempt to rectify the situation. Needless to say, we will have to replace the barbeque, but will take our business elsewhere. read more

Purchased a $1200 Vermont Castings barbeque grill from this merchant. The barbeque grill came with a 10 year warranty. After 6 years, the barbeque had substantial burn chamber and burner corrosion. When I called the merchant about invoking the warranty, I was basically told that the company no longer made this model and that Vermont Castings was purchased by another company and they no longer had to honor the warranty. However, I could purchase a patch kit. So much for the adage, "You get what you pay for." I expected better of the merchant given I purchased this item from them. I purchased the 2490 Vermont Aclaim Woodstove in 2007. The stove has worked great. Two extra benefits of buying this stove is one, I rec'd a $250.00 rebate, and Woodstove can be utilized when days are Stage One. The Owner even came out to look at my stove and gave me tips on how to best use the woodstove. The stove allows no smoke into the living room, and once started, no smoke coming out the stove pipe.
