I absolutely love this place! We ordered the smoked salmon focaccia, tempura green beans, calamari, short ribs and pork chop. The the smoked salmon focaccia was my absolute favorite and their short rib was so soft I love it. Their mash potatoes were kind of scalloped with cheese it was so delicious I took it to go to eat the next day. Would definitely come again. read more

We went here for our New Year's Eve celebration. They had a limited menu which was a little sad but they were able to make a few things on the normal menu. The service was slow at first but probably due to it being crowded. Around my table we had everything from scallops to lamb. I had the Alaskan halibut which was super delicious. For dessert we had the brownie Sunday and the profiteroles (which weren't on the edited menu). The food was yummy and we were pleasantly surprised when they could make us the dessert on the normal menu. Good experience with family. I highly suggest trying this place out if you want a nicer dinner in Tahoe City. read more

Great place to eat or just have drinks. The first time my wife and I tried River Grill was back in the late 1970's when we'd stay at River Ranch, Stanford Ski Chalet or Russell n Pines in Tahoe City and ski at Alpine Meadows. After 4 pm we'd head to the bar at River Ranch for drinks and free pop corn. If we stayed long enough, free live music started (usually Chuck & Gene) and we'd ask for a bar menu that included Hawaiian short ribs. The place hasn't changed. Just a fun place to enjoy good drinks, good food, the Truckee River and good service. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Tahoe City did not disappoint this evening. I started with a cup of corn chowder that came with a small jalapeño corn muffin. The soup was light...made with milk and no thickener.. perfect start to the meal. I ordered the Ahi Poke appetizer for my entree as I was not very hungry. It was well-prepared and tasty. My friend and I decided to share the profiteroles for dessert. I dropped a star for that dish.. the profiteroles were soft, not crispy. I'd actually describe them as "doughy". The menu states that the profiteroles are filled with ice cream but does not state that the ice cream is some sort of super sweet butter pecan with chunks of chocolate.... with both Carmel sauce and chocolate sauce plus candied macadamia nuts, my friend and I found ourselves fighting over the little slices of strawberry that garnished the dish. I want to add that the service was great. I'm sorry I did not ask the name of our waiter, but he was friendly, efficient, professional.. everything one hopes for at an upscale restaurant at Tahoe. read more

This is a 100% 5 star review. We came here on a Saturday in December when they first opened up and from beginning to end had a great experience. Our waiter was super personable and so was the rest of the crew. We had the duck, lamb, and salmon. We shared a few appetizers as well. The waiter had great pairing suggestions for our food with the wine list. We don't usually eat dessert but we did here despite being full from the generous portions. The wait for our food was perfect and this was our best dining experience during our stay at a cabin we stayed at. read more

The restaurant opened a few days ago when we dined here. Good was delicious, especially the appetizers. If we are back in Tahoe, I'd like to return here for dinner. The tempura green beans and fried calamari were my favorites. Mac and cheese was OK with bacon. My sea scallops with mushroom risotto was perfectly cooked. Hubby had the halibut, fish of the day. Dinner 7-29-24 Food was very good 4 stars. Atmosphere was excellent, 5 stars. Entertainment was enjoyable 4 stars. But............ Server, young male, (didn't give his name). To say snail's pace would be an exaggeration. He was not too busy. He stood around and did menial tasks, totally ignoring us most of the night. Empty tea and wine for over 15 minutes at a time. Took over 20 minutes just to get his attention to bring us our final bill. We were very polite and told him in the beginning that he did not have to hurry, and realized later that we should never have given him that green light. Rest of staff had more tables and appeared to be taking care of their customers well. I assumed that he may have been a family member of the owner the way he carried himself. I know this sounds harsh, but that young man should not be serving in a restaurant in that price range for food and service. read more

Outdoor seating was beautiful and the view on the river just outside the dining window (as another review mentioned, you're seated in a covered patio next to the river) was gorgeous. Really felt like an upscale place with quick service and great ambience. We got two entrees: burger and a salmon -- both were average and left a lot to be desired, especially for the price. The salmon was pretty bland and the burger was OK. The pictures of the desserts on Yelp reviews had us enticed, so we decided to give that a chance.. We got the strawberry shortcake and were very underwhelmed. The puff pastry on top was flavorless, hard, and crumbled into flakes upon cutting through, and the ice cream was plain vanilla ice cream. The macerated strawberries were tasty, but strawberries with sugar are just inherently yummy. The mint was fresh - good choice! Disappointed with the food, especially given how pricey everything was. Won't be coming back, which is a shame given the views and location. read more

A friend recommended the River Grill so we decided to give it a try for our 50th anniversary dinner with our children. It was magical. We had a lovely table for 10 right next to the river. The Johnny burger was dry and over cooked. They expected 8$ to share a plate of food, I have never heard of that. Just awful and passive aggressive service. Impeccable service, very good food. They don't like you to show up without a reservation, but once we were seated we had a lovely experience. The setting was a beautiful covered patio next to the river. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The wine selection was nice. There were some nice menu choices. I had a very good baked Halibut and my co-diners had Seared Scallops. Afterwards we shared a couple of desserts. Came by for dinner on a Wednesday night. A couple tables and a few people at the bar, otherwise not busy. We were sat promptly, near the fireplace. It was cozy and beautiful, with a view of the river out the window. Our server came by to offer water and menus. I had a Kentucky Buck, which was tasty We started with the shrimp and the dumplings. Both were good, and I was told these are the most popular appetizers, as well as the tuna. For dinner, I had the braised short rib and my brother had the pork chop. Both were delicious. The only issue was, the potatoes were severely undercooked. Although they were warm and the cheese was melted, they were not cooked through. Dessert was good. Got it free with the yelp check in. They let you pick dessert too, which is cool. Our server gave us a discount for the potatoes and informed the chef. He was quite funny and entertaining. He gave us some tips for the ski mountain. Overall, service was stellar, ambiance was great and food was ok. A bit overpriced, but everything in this area is. Nice date spot. Bathrooms are clean. Parking is in the lot out front- probably gets full on weekends. read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant in North Tahoe. For starters, they're pretty consistent here. I've been coming for years with my family and River Grill serves generous portions and the food (especially the produce) tastes fresh. Last night was no different. The prices had gone up significantly, but I guess that's just the world we're living in. I ordered the Red Pear Salad and I was that guy who asked to sub goat cheese for the Gorgonzola. I could tell the waitress wasn't happy, but it was delicious. Tangy, sweet sherry vinaigrette and perfectly spiced pecans. We also started with the Halibut Ceviche and this was the first surprise of the evening: such great flavor with this dish. I wish I could pinpoint what made this work so well. It wasn't just lime! Maybe the cilantro and halibut? Fresh garlic? A little paprika? I don't know. This was one of the better ceviches I've ever had. And the chips looked to fried in-house. Well done guys! Someone in my party ordered the House Fish Special: Macadamia Crusted Halibut with a Mango Beurre Blanc. The sweet and sour of the mango wed with the butter and vinegar. Do I need to say any more? I'm still regretting not getting that plate for myself. Guess I'll have to go back. One last thing: the ambiance of this place really is great. It's like game-watch hangout, meets river retreat. We made our reservation a month ago for an outdoor table. We called the SAME day to confirm. We were all set! However, when we arrived the hostess said we didn't answer their call when they called us to confirm. They did not leave a message and we had NO missed call. Hostess said maybe we had bad reception. But, our phones were working just fine. We were a large party so obviously we had to plan ahead. We arrived at 7:30 and reservation was at 7:30. Hostess told us it was at 7:15 so they ended up giving away our table. Didn't make sense as we were on time and confirmed earlier the same day. We asked to speak to the manager, George. He was no help. No apology. We were taken to a table inside. Since a number of us have been personally impacted (lots of heat break) by Covid, we weren't pleased about an indoor table. George came over later. We waited for him to "make it right" but he told us "it is what is it" and to "be positive." Our jaws dropped. Very unprofessional. We saw him sit at the bar through our dinner, what's up with that? Bottom line, our server was wonderful, five stars to her, but the hostess and manager...it was the strangest dining experience of our lives. They were both incredibly condescending and clearly lied to us. It was disappointing. Needless to say we will not be back. read more

Really good, was more impressed by the mains than the apps but overall a super solid experience. Table bread was delicious and super fresh- loved the rosemary in it and that it was served warm! For apps - we ordered the Mac n cheese and the Caesar salad. The Mac n cheese was good but not outstanding - the bake on top was well done, but the noodles themselves needed another coating of cheesy goodness (more sauce on them please!). Caesar salad was standard, with good croutons. For the mains we got the duck breast and the Alaskan halibut. Both were amazing - duck was perfectly cooked, crispy on top and really juicy. The Alaskan halibut macadamia crust was tasty and the sauce it came in was sooo perfectly tart. The sides in both dishes were also delicious (ginger sweet potato mash and whipped mashed potatoes respectively, both with grilled asparagus). We really enjoyed our meal here! Nice setting by the River- beautiful patio seating (but unfortunately no dogs allowed). Food was just ok, we had several appetizers and they weren't very good. The spring roll was a bunch of raw vegetables inside a tortilla, the calamari was like dried cardboard, the tempura French beans were probably the better one. The corn chowder was a watery cream soup with some chopped veggies and kernels of corn. The main courses were on the salty side. The Lambchops were small and the sides and sauce were both very salty. It's pretty expensive for the portion size. The scallops and fish were ok, but definitely average. Our waiter was very nice and friendly, but the girl who worked front desk could prob have a better attitude for sure. As the night got more hectic, she was definitely snappy at guests. After a $700 dinner (bigger group) that was definitely not a good note to leave on. read more

This was a beautiful restaurant right on the river! Nice indoor and outdoor seating options. The menu had nice selection. The lavender lemon drop was really great and I can be picky. We had ahi for an appetizer and it came with rice which made it a little too heavy for an appetizer. We enjoyed the salmon and vegetables! Really great food and ambiance!
