One of New Jersey's oldest breweries, founded in 1996. In 2007 it came under new ownership, and in 2013 it moved to its current facility in an industrial park in Ewing, NJ. They recently acquired MD brewery DuClaw as well and continue to brew their beers and distribute under the same name. They distribute widely across NJ, PA, NY so it's pretty easy to find at liquor stores and restaurants, and I've had their beers many times over the years. Their beer is pretty solid with some fun and inventive offerings. My girlfriend and I stopped into their taproom for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and it was quite possibly the worst taproom we've ever been to out of 80+ NJ breweries we have visited together. It looks like they concentrate all of their time and effort on production and distribution and have not spent any time creating a decent place to hang out. Almost no decor. All plastic cups (a personal pet peeve of mine in breweries). Not even a permanent bar of any kind. There were only four other people the whole time we were there so the atmosphere was pretty dead. We ordered flights, and the names of the beers were written in abbreviations right on the cups which made it impossible to read on the darker beers. But the beer was very good! We really enjoyed our flights and bought a six pack of the imperial pumpkin ale to bring home with us. We'll continue to drink their beer, but I don't recommend coming to the taproom at all. read more

Some of the beers are passable but nothing seems to be great. The atmosphere of the place is unfortunately run down and tired looking. In fact, there's really no atmosphere at all. I will stop in on occasion to fill a growler or grab some cans to go but would not want to spend any time here. A basic remodel would change the game or at a minimum a cleaning and fresh coat of paint wouldn't hurt either. read more

This is a relaxing place to try a variety of beers. Just walk up to the counter and order and then sit in their casual tasting room. My husband tried several beers and liked them, and I enjoyed my pumpkin ale. In the Summer, I used to swing by after work to pick up six packs of tasty, fruit- oriented beers. There is ample parking in their lot, and the location is easily accessible. If I lived nearby, I would attend some of their events. Tours are given on Saturdays. read more

While in the Princeton area, we were saddened to find Triumph Brewery had closed due to the pandemic. So we turned to River Horse Brewing as it was a short 15 minute drive from Princeton. Here is my review: Pro: - ample parking space - outdoor seating - $6 for most beers. - wide variety of beers - the Launchpad was the one I liked the most. - can place order via phone Cons: Limited outdoor seating. My group waited till a table had emptied so that we could sit. While we were seated, an employee brought out a table and set it up for a group. Our group couldn't believe it as we had to wait while another group got preferential treatment. This irked me the most. No outdoor lighting - it gets dark earlier now. We would have stayed longer but there was no lighting so we left. I wish they had better indoor seating. They took us to the warehouse which had a funny smell so our group opted for outdoor seating. RH has definitely become one of my favorite breweries to visit lately! I first had the opportunity to visit them for a Yelp event and I was very impressed. We had a very informative tour of the brewery and I learned a lot of things about the brewing process. Then we had the opportunity to taste a few delicious beers. I remember falling in love with the Stouty Stout and I really hope it returns in the near future. I was able to make a few new friends and it's always fun to chat while enjoying some great beers. I left with a growler of Oatmeal Milk Stout and I was definitely planning my next visit. I have been able to visit RH a few more times to refill growler and for a few events. I must admit that I'm always impressed with the quality of their beers. I recently went for an event when they paired their beers with Girls Scouts Cookies, it was packed and the pairings were spot on. The Belgian Freeze with the Caramel Delights was my favorite. Just look at my pictures and they might just tempt you to visit lol. Now it's a great idea to sign up for their emails because every week you get updates about their specials and upcoming events. Also they have a growler club that everyone should enroll in. When you purchase 7 growlers, I think your next 2 are half off. Did I mention that you can also bring your own food? Don't let the non-descript building deter you! They really need their signage to be lit at night.. we were specifically going there, but I wonder how many people drive by and dont even realize its there. I'm so glad there's a brewery in this area. They had a good selection of maybe 10-12 beers, all the typical varieties. The guys who were working were very friendly and open to talking about their operation. They have some tables inside the tasting room and also just behind there where you can see their huge warehouse and all the tanks where they do the brewing! We made a reservation for a tour on a Saturday afternoon. It was $5 (you pay when you get there, but make a reservation online). Once we arrived, we got a sample flight before the tour. You get four flights total. A female did the tour, I had heard she is not the regular tour guide. She carried sheets of paper about the description of the brewery...which wasn't bad but I feel like the tour could have been much more dynamic and entertaining. All the samples we had were good, but not to our liking so we didn't buy any beers to go. Nice large brewery, tour is about 40 minutes. Small seating area where you can bring food in and sit and eat... but the environment seems odd to bring food in. read more

You know those breweries that really took off back when craft beer was a new scene and then never reinvented themselves? That's River Horse. Their beer is by no means bad, but it is dictionary definition standard. They have a nice setup/location. Parking is easy and the employees are nice; however, I just can't be excited about their beer when you have breweries like Kane, Icarus and Carton really hitting it out of the park. read more

We happened to be far out into New Jersey and figured we would try to find a brewery to explore. I opened my Yelp app to see if we could find something in our vicinity and saw that we were near the River Horse Brewing Company, which I had previously bookmarked. We decided to check it out, but arrived to discover a full parking lot. With 60 minutes before closing time, we were eager to get inside. Luckily, we only had to wait a few moments before we were able to pounce on an opening space. Once inside, we discovered that, by law, we needed to receive some sort of beer education in order to drink. Unlike many other breweries, they offered the option to forego the 30-45 minute tour and explore a self-guided brewery tale through a viewfinder. Since we had arrived just before the closing time, we decided to pass on the comprehensive tour. Once we finished clicking through the viewfinder, we walked over the bar to select the 4 tastes included with the $5 fee. Once we received our filled glasses, we tried to locate a table. Every seat in the tasting room was taken, but someone let us know that there was additional seating in the actual brewing space. It was a bit chilly in there, but also super fun to drink among the barrels and bottles. In terms of the beer, my first selection was the Special Ale, a rich and flavorful amber. Then, I opted for two dark seasonal brews - the Chocolate Porter and the Oatmeal Milk Stout. The Chocolate Porter had much more body and substance, as well as a strong cocoa essence. The Oatmeal Stout was less impactful or memorial. Lastly, the Sour Henry was a magenta-colored beer that had been aged for 9 months in wine barrels with brettanomyces and black currants. Each sip caused an initial mouth pucker that smoothed out into a "mmmm" at the fruity finish. My brother had wound up with the same first three selections, but replaced the sour with the Tripel Horse, their Belgian-Style Tripel Ale, which was a bit too wheat-infused for my liking. He loved it though. The River Horse Brewing Company served excellent beers in a fun and light-hearted atmosphere. It was definitely worth our spontaneous visit and would even merit another planned trip, despite the distance. read more

2-2-18 I made sure to put in my calendar that today was the first day of their new Chocolate Porter beer!! I was once again greeted very warmly by the workers there! One worker even remembered what I was looking for the last time I was there haha! I asked for a sample of their chocolate Porter beer. Now I am NOT a beer drinker because sometimes they have a bad aftertaste. But this chocolate Porter beer is amazing! This beer is so smooth and tasty. It's not super chocolatey, what has a nice chocolate tone if you let it settle in your mouth a little before swallowing. Savor it! It's like a wine for beer drinkers haha. Came by to see what is up we had been here for the tour once before when they just opened, and used to love going to the place when it was a tiny, authentic micro brewery in Lambertville, NJ. They have outgrown that spot. We paid for our tour and tasting, $10 each. You get a flight of four tastes that you choose from what is on tap that day. The tour is now offered as a virtual tour - a bit goofy, but we had taken the full tour before so did not need to do that again. We came for the beer. Their Lager was one of our favorites but they no longer make that brew - obviously the accountants have taken control. For our four we had the Pils, Imperial Stout, Oatmeal Stout and an IPA. They were all very good. I liked the Pils and the Imperial Stout the best, my wife preferred the Pils. This is one of our favorite breweries in the area and they continue to produce fine beer. I am super happy there is a brewery here there's not nearly enough around this area. I love the location of this brewery as it's super convenient for anyone in Lawrenceville/Ewing and this area is very weak for bar scenes. The beer is very good and decently priced. The only downside is the environment - the inside is small unless you sit in the warehouse which isn't very enjoyable. To get to the outside area you have to take a long walk through the warehouse - you get scolded if you use the front door because you can't have beer for that 1 second walk from the sidewalk to the outdoor area - but the outdoors area wasn't the best kept area anyways. I attended the Trivia Revolution two hour trivia night twice at the River Horse Brewing Company. Bring a sweater! It's a real brewery and events like trivia night and others like the craft fair at the holidays take place right next to the vats and huge stacks of boxes of already bottled brew in the large, warehouse-y and drafty space. That's the only thing that's even slightly uncomfortable because the staff go out of their way to welcome guests and help you choose the right varietal. The tour was given by a professional and very committed brewmaster who you could just tell LOVED his job. I wish i caught his name so everyone that saw this could buy him a beer. Very amazing experience! I've been to a decent amount of breweries and in different tours but riverhorse, man you guys KILLED the tour! Best tour I've ever been on by farrr. Granted the tour was $5... During the tour they go back on the history and how riverhorse came to be. They take you around the entire brewery and show you everything and what it's used for, where the waste goes and more. You get to try 4 different beers throughout the tour while getting a good sniff in in different hops and grains. After the tour, we were taken back into the tasting room where my friends and I continued to taste different beers. They have a merch store and a section to by beer and create your own 6 pack, which I did and they were delicious. Riverhorse is always holding events on their website, which I've been meaning to go to. They have a runners club every once in a while, if you're into the whole running and then finishing it with beer thing if you like good beer, visit this place. read more

This was a really fun trip with my co workers. You bring your own food and enjoy an assortment of beers. The tour was of their enormous warehouse operation. It is really compelling to see the steps the beer takes to make it from the giant distillers to your bottle. The also have an interesting partnership with a bourbon company who lends their barrels to them. They store beer in these casks to pick up more unique flavors. Im inly tried 2 beers, but really found the Triple Belgian and Oatmeal Milk Stout to be delicious! read more

We went on a day trip to River Horse to check it out. They are, in fact, one of the most established craft breweries in NJ. They got in on the craze before it was cool. The part we enjoyed the most was how informative the tour was. The guide really knew her stuff. Most of the time breweries don't get into that depth. They have a relatively small tasting room. It's not the type of tasting room that I'd come back to. I was also surprised that they served the beers in plastic, disposable cups. Any beer snob wouldn't appreciate it in anything except out of a glass. The beers themselves are actually pretty good and definitely better than your corporate brands. The brewery itself is no longer owned by the three guys who founded it. It has since been bought by investors. You can tell. It doesn't have that warm-and-fuzzy small business feel that so many other breweries in NJ have. It feels more like a smaller version of the Busch brewery. It also explains how River Horse got all the contracts throughout liquor stores in NJ to have their product sold there. They're great with the business / marketing side and not as much with the personal side. I have allergy-induced asthma, and I could feel that there is a lot of mildew in the brewery. It was hard for me to breathe in there. Makes sense with all the puddles everywhere that they don't clean up and all the cobwebs on the ceiling. Overall, we were all glad that we went so that we could get the background on River Horse. But we just didn't like the brewery itself very much. read more

I am a particular fan of River Horse's IPAs, so stopping by for a tour on Labor Day weekend was a must. I've never been to the old Lambertville location, but the Ewing location is huge and very industrial (this includes the tasting room)-- clearly it will work wonders for River Horse's expansion in the next few years. Our $5 tour included tastings of beer throughout and was a great overview for their brewing process. We even got to try their newest pumpkin ale (heavy on the cinnamon), which was just being released for fall. Our guide talked fast, but he had a lot of information to impart. My favorite part about the tour was the table they set up with the different hop varieties they use in their brews. Often, breweries just show you one type of their hops or hop pellets, but at River Horse, you could smell them all at the same place, which helps newcomers distinguish the different scents of the herb. Never heard of this....the bartender told us all NJ breweries have to do this, but I have been to lots of other NJ breweries and this is the only one that you have to buy tokens for. I must say that I was underwhelmed by several components of this brewery. Number one, the size of the samples of beer were a little disappointing. Number two and more irritating were the prices of the beer. Let's say you want a 6 pack. You're buying direct from a brewery and it was more expensive than I've seen in most liquor stores. Really? Also, if you want to buy a draft on tap the prices were mostly in the $6 range (and the Tripel Horse was $7). I wasn't loving this aspect, to be frank. The tour itself was pretty good, and our tour guide was quite knowledgeable. She was able to answer most of the questions asked (by the same person) throughout the tour. The beer was also good. I was pleasantly surprised by the Summer Blonde ale (I'm an IPA girl). Just disappointing that after the tour we drank our last sample of beer and then left since we could just as well go to an actual bar and pay the same price for a beer in a cold pint glass. Drove an hour and a half to get to this brewery...was it worth it? Well, the beer was good and the tour guide Dale was very pleasant and helpful. The one owner seemed to be bothered that we wanted to sample some beer he opened and poured for another patron, this bothered me so I did not want to ask for a sample. He was unfriendly, and seemed to be ungrateful. I often buy RH when I go to bars and restaurants around me, I also buy it time to time when I go to grab beers for get together. Like I said the beer was good, Dale and Daisy (the adorable mascot dog) were great, and Chris... Well he was unpleasant. If you are in the area go to Triumph instead. I truly enjoyed this brewery. I've been to many breweries in Tampa and Denver, so I didn't have high expectations for New Jersey, but I was surprised. I loved the tour and the variety of beer. First off, I couldn't believe that they are currently only a local 4 state export brewery. It felt like this could me a larger operation. My only negative was the fact that they only had four beers in their tasting room area. I felt like they didn't have any of me favorite selections The staff and dog rusty are absolutely amazing.
