Service is prompt and friendly, order was accurate. The beef taco comes on a flour tortilla with lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. I noticed the tomatoes had a yeasty/alcohol flavor, suggesting they were overripe and starting to ferment. I wouldn't get a taco here again because it didn't have a good overall flavor even without the tomato issue. The pizza puffs are very greasy, but good, with a slight spiciness to them. Maybe pepperoni? Only had a few bites to try, but would get them again. The gyros are huge! The Tzatziki sauce comes on them, but you can get it on the side if you let them know your preference. They put a lot on the sandwich, but it's at the bottom with the tomatoes and onions, so if you end up pulling some of the onions off like I did (and there are a lot), I suggest getting the sauce on the side so half of it doesn't end up discarded with the onions. Note: It's 50 cents if you add EXTRA Tzatziki sauce on the side. According to the person in my party the double cheeseburger was good but I didn't personally try it. I didn't care for the shoestring fries, but I'm not a fan of that style of fries, so take that as you will. read more

I've been coming to River Oaks Gyros for over a decade and they have the best staff and best takeout Greek food in the Chicagoland area. The prices are cheap and the food is always fresh. They're great at remembering customers and your orders, so after you go a few times they know exactly what you want without even asking. It's CASH ONLY, but they do have an ATM with a $2 or $3 service fee if you happen to forget to bring cash. I was in town a couple of weeks ago and wanted some good food I could only get in Chicago. I ordered an Italian beef sandwich with au jus on the side and sweet peppers for my mom and a patty melt and taco for myself. After trying many Italian beef sandwiches in the area and being disappointed, my mom said this one was great, and she's a tough cookie to please. My patty melt was delicious. The wheat bread was buttered and toasted, and the grilled onions and cheese were how I remembered my fave patty melts growing up. However, my last visit convinced me that I need an Italian sausage supplement. I can't eat it all at once so I have leftover delights ready for a little microwave action. DELICIOUS AND HABIT FORMING. Day 1 combo, beef and fries. Huge sandwiches. Polished off combo but only half of the beef. Couldn't even look at all of those gorgeous fries. Hence midnight snack. Second visit on day 3 combo and beef both with mozzarella and peppers. No fry for this guy. Did both sandwiches. I'm a bad man. Last visit saw combo with mozzarella and peppers, pastrami on rye and fried mushrooms. Just couldn't help myself and ravished complete order. Beef is homemade. Witnessed guy cutting it up. Very nice folks. Married couple with son hard working and courteous. Passed this place hundreds of times over nearly 40 years but never checked it out. Looks like it's closed but actually open 10-10. While I cannot make up for lost time bet on several calls next time I'm home. Mom and Pop just like the old days before chains and processed beef (yuk.) Absolutely God awful. Don't waste your time. It's cash only and the food is not worth the trip to the ATM, believe me on this one. I ordered fried mushrooms and what I got was a bag of very large burnt breading. I tried to eat one but the smell of old oil was nauseating. I broke open the other large globules and there was barely a mushroom in the lot of them. I've been here on a couple of other occasions and ordered hotdogs and gyros. Not spectacular, not at all.
