If you like creamy coleslaw, this is right up your alley.
    Rob P.

River Rat Has been an institution in Harrison Township for decades, with good reason. Do you know what you're going to get when you come here. The drinks are large, reasonably priced, and strong. The food portions are substantial, and there are a number of solid offerings. The coleslaw is good if you like the creamy type. But, after my wife said she wanted fries with her meal, the waitress assumed I wanted the same thing. It's a $6 up charge for coleslaw and fries. It would've been nice if she would've asked, and told us how much it cost. Having said that, the fries are crispy and tasty. And, there are plenty of them to share. If you have two people getting sandwiches, you really only need one up charge. We decide to get a lemon rice soup, which was good. May 24 ounce beer was only $8, and it was a high quality beer (from Bell's). The Moscow Mule was good, too. The chicken sandwich was nicely grilled, but it was on just a plain bun. One stand out was the River Rat Dipper, a perfectly executed French dip. There's a massive amount of meat. The French roll with a hard crust is just right for taste and sturdiness: it stands up to all warm, the salty jus you want to dunk it in. Soak it up! Not surprisingly, prices are a bit higher than they were 2 years ago. The food I described cost us $80 before tip. It's a solid dining experience, and there's nothing wrong with that. But, at that price, I have to think about going to eat here again.

    Fettuccine Alfredo

The name of the restaurant is very deceiving and uninviting to me, however, this is such an amazing restaurant and is ALWAYS busy. It's also very clean and the staff is exceptional anytime I've ever been here. This past visit I got the fettuccine Alfredo and we split the appetizer calamari. The fettuccine Alfredo was seriously so creamy and the portion was huge - I had left overs for days. The calamari *chefs kiss* is literally amazing, it's in this cream sauce that is literally to die for. Other people in our group got: crab cakes, pizza, ribeye and ribs and everyone was so satisfied and impressed with the food! Way to go, River Rat!

    Chicken parm

Overall the presentation was good. I felt that the chicken parm should've had panko bread crumbs. The spaghetti needs work. The sauce over all tasty it needs a tad bit of spice not for flavor maybe some heat to make people wanna have a better over all experience instead of the same old version of chicken parm. Overall if an alphabetical grade I'd give it a b-.

Pub Meatloaf with mushroom gravy and crispy onions. So good!!

What's not to like about the River Rat? Great location, outdoor seating, large bar, nice atmosphere and great food! Seafood is a mainstay here but they also have a large selection of other options. The portions are large for the cost and the quality is on point. Staff is friendly and helpful and very welcoming. We enjoyed the French onion soup (which is one of the best in the area), Fish and Chips, and the Pub Meatloaf.l and everything was awesome. Can't wait to return!

Food was excellent. First time visiting this restaurant, been living near here over 4 years . My boyfriend got the fish n chips and I got the burger. Reason I gave it a 4 is, service we waited a awhile to take our order . I wound definitely return. Place was packed when we went .

Fish and Chips. Look at the size of the fish!

The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It's cute inside. We started with the mozzarella fritta, which was absolutely delicious! The marinara sauce accompanying it was bursting with flavor. However, the dinner salad was a bit underwhelming. It only had simple toppings like tomato, red onion, and cucumbers. I opted for the house dressing, which was supposed to be a blend of oil, vinegar, and Italian spices. To my dismay, despite vigorous shaking, all the seasonings remained mostly at the bottom of the plastic cup, with little to no vinegar. It was okay, but not particularly impressive. For the main course, I ordered the baked Italian combo. The lasagna was good, though a bit overcooked and with some crunchy bits. The chicken parmigiana was also tasty. However, the meat ravioli that came with it was a major disappointment. It tasted like a plain noodle with a large amount of unflavored meat. To sweeten the deal, we had crème brûlée for dessert. It was enjoyable, but a bit peculiar. Half of it was piping hot, while the other half was ice cold. Despite the oddity, the flavor was still great. Overall, the food was okay, and I might return to this place in the future.

To broaden our experience, my friend and I split everything we ordered. Dinner was AMAZING....5/5 APPETIZER: "Burrata Camponata" A mound of this heavenly Eggplant Relish, severalthick slices of fresh Burrata oozing cheese, and a big mound of imported, freshly shaved Prosciutto off of the special shaver that sits in the dining room for the dishes that require this beautifully seasoned ham. Absolutely delicious appetizer! The basket of fresh Italian bread and olive oil for dipping was put to use with our glasses of Chianti and then enjoyed very soon as an olive oil topped bread base for our well-placed trio of this gorgeous appetizer. Next, for the salad, we chose to split the "Charred (on a hot coal grill !) Romaine on the grill Caesar Salad" with an anchovie garnish The perfectly seasoned croutons were made in-house, and so was their most divine (BEST I've ever had) Caesar dressing! We split 2 Entrees: Pasta Carbonara created in the imported, authentic, giant Parmesan wheel table-side Espresso-encrusted Prime cut sirloin steak Med Rare with roasted redskins and fresh, petite green beans. It was the most tender cut of beef with huge flavor, made even more so from the grill. It was perfection, simple fare, highest quality of ingredients, all prepared and presented beautifully. The staff were always attentive, though not smothering, and genuinely friendly with a ready smile. DESSERT: We split "heaven-in-your-mouth" x2 : a piece of Dubai Chocolate cheesecake and a serving of the Tiramisu. "Ecstasy," is all we could say as the perfect wrap-up to this gourmet trip to Italy Mangiabevi, you haunt me daily until I return.

Our dinner started with easy to make reservations for four for a Friday night. Once arrived we were promptly seated and introductions made, Annie was our server(and more). I had note seen the menu in over a year so I personally was delighted to see plenty of ocean going features, specifically the grilled Octopus, shellfish and more. Before the food everyone agreed on a drink. Everyone tried something different than the others. Drinks included a Chocolate Martini, Limoncello(homemade) like grandma made it) Martini, Tanqueray and Tonic and Makers Mark Old fashioned for me. Everyone agreed the drinks were just right. Annie was then asked to bring out some Grilled Octopus. A HUGE and thick long leg was then served. DELICIOUS! Dinner was ordered with some questions(by me). I was intrigued by the Black Linguine. Basically a fruit de Mare or shellfish but with white wine. I asked for a subscription to a spicy red pasta sauce, not available. However, my friends wife chose this and said it was delicious. My friend and also my opted for the table side Carbonara. Basically a long sting pasta with a cheese wheel at the table. The cheese gets heated up and then scraped and put into the pasta. Our cheese scraper was entertaining and put on a nice show. For me, I decided on the Branzino, which was served whole but deboned at the table, with sauteed spinach. From the first bite, I was in heaven. We then had a second round of drinks, the girls switched things up and went for Cosmos, us guys repeated what we had earlier. Lastly, we just had to have dessert and were we glad we did. Both couple opted to share with one another. Our friends chose the Profiterole which they said was delicious. However, everyone loved our choice; Nicciola Mousse Tart. This is a MUST get. I can't even describe it other than I should have gotten one for the road. This place also had some soft entertainment, keyboard player. So glad we made the journey here. Highly recommend it!

Menu are both physical and virtual via QR code to access their website menu. There is definitely too much to talk about here so be sure to look at my pics as I've provided a quick summary in the captions. J Baldwin's famous calamari. After receiving the dish, I think I've had it before at J Baldwin's in Clinton Twp. The calamari is not your typical calamari and is sauced with his Beurre Blanc famed on the Food Network. While it's still breaded, the Beurre Blanc is enough to soften it completely while adding an explosion of flavor. The Beurre Blanc is made with olive oil, shallots, peppercorns, bay leaves, lemon juice, wine, and cream. Personally I think this dish was way too sauce heavy. There wasn't a single crispy bite. While flavorful, I was looking forward to a light and crispy texture, but didn't get it. I think this could have been accomplished with going lighter in the sauce, maybe just drizzling it on, and providing a serving of it on the side. 3,5 stars. Truffle Sausage Pizza. Tradition hand tossed dough that's not too thick and not too thin. Italian sausage, truffle oil, parsley, Gouda, Mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses. The Italian sausage was not what I expected. Rather than slices or tiny meatballs, it was ground up. I kinda liked it to tell you the truth, but it wasn't evenly applied. It was more densely populated in the center, which left the perimeter sparse with toppings. While the truffle oil sounded good, it didn't work for me. Here's the thing you need to know about truffle oil, it's not made from truffles (mushrooms)! That's right, truffle oil is typically made from extract, which is why the flavor is so intense and a little goes a long way. Local Carbonara Bucatini. Made the traditional way with cuts of pork cheek (guanciale). The bucatini pasta was nicely done and not overcooked. The guanciale was also nice and crispy as it should be. It was lighter on the cheese than I would have liked and none was served on the side, but it was Pecorino Romano and it was shaved from a block. Did I ask for more on the side, of course I did! The black pepper wasn't also as prominent as it should have been, but the server did have some fresh ground at the ready when it was served. 4 stars. Overall, I would have to say that I'm still a fan of J. Baldwin's Testa Barra. The food is prepared fresh with quality ingredients, and the dishes are inspirationally classic, and sometimes with innovating or modern twist. I've consistently never been disappointed with every visit. If You would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company... Bon Appétit!

It was packed inside and when we inquired on the wait time the hostess mentioned people were staying long and they were very behind. Once we finally got seated we got a private booth with curtains. A warm bread basket (very delicious) quickly arrived and our drink orders taken. The drinks here are quality pours and they brought us extra olives and cherries which we thought was a nice touch. We started off with calamari and escargot for our appetizers. Calamari was plentiful and had big meaty pieces. The breading was a little too salty though. I'm used to calamari coming with a side of marinara but this came with cocktail sauce. It was nothing special and probably wouldn't order it again. The escargot, normally a favorite of mine, was to rave about either. The sauce it came in was very bland and my girlfriend ended up adding salt to it to make it taste better. Main courses were a better choice. I had the gnocchi with Palomino sauce and it was excellent. They give quite a big portion so I had enough leftovers for the next day. The birthday girl got the Veal Mamma Assunta my other friend went with the shrimp Casalinga (their house speciality). They both said they liked their choices but it wasn't anything exceptional. I think depending on what you order certain dishes are better than others. We had a good experience and the portions are large but it just seemed there were a few things lacking that could have made it a great experience. I would still recommend Luciano's but I would come here when it wasn't a busy weekend or during lunchtime.
