I've been a huge fan of this restaurant since it's opening some time ago. However, recently some type of "new" management/ownership have transpired and the quality control seems non existent now. I've gotten three carry-outs in the last 3-5 months and all have been not just bad, but inedible! I don't understand how anyone could take a very popular and successful local place, well loved by residents and turn it into something that I find shocking! Please, Please return to the standards and high quality food you used to have. Stop trying to cut corners and take the time needed to not only get people's order right, but to make sure that what your putting out, you'd be proud of! It's beyond bad at this point. read more

Great Maurice salad! Casual, family friendly. Not the friendliest staff but they do their job.

Arrived with our party of 10 we were told it would be about 25 minutes. It's now an hour and the hostess could not give us a time when we would be seated. They are not able to handle a bigger party. Then they wanted a six dollar up charge to get a Cesar Salad instead of a regular salad. read more

I have gone by this place for years. Recently, had relatives visit, so we went to River Rat Restaurant. The place is so appealing. Out of a party of 18, there were only 2 complaints. Fish taco's had no flavor. And Chicken fettuccine (the chicken was dried out). I had Chicken Marsala and it was fabulous. Other hits were manicotti, Maurice salad, walleyed and meatloaf. Decided to give the River Rat another shot on this visit I brought my mother and wife for Mother's Day. My mother had the perch and she thought it was absolutely excellent , my wife had the big fish sandwich she also enjoyed it and said the coleslaw was excellent I had steak Siciliano which is a New York strip and I ordered it medium rare the steak was cooked to perfection it also came with a side of pasta was not fond of the pasta but the steak was perfect we split a dessert and it was a caribou ice cream brownie and it was Dynamite we all enjoyed it quite a bit our waiter was Gary and he did a magnificent job taking care of us the service was good the food was good and the atmosphere was very nice I would recommend the River Rat if you're in the area read more

This was a nice surprise place we discovered on our last trip to MI. I really enjoyed the Lake Perch and side of Mac and Cheese (photos attached). I also had the Santa Anna potatoes which were pretty good but just a bit salty for my taste. Our waitress Donna was friendly and spirited! The kind of person that makes you feel comfortable. She gave us a great run-down of what was on the menu. This was a great first experience and look forward to coming back on a return trip to MI. Time of visit was just after opening at 3pm. read more

Very disappointing visit, after waiting 22 minutes for a waiter to take our drink order it took another 10 minutes to bring it 20 feet from the bar. Next, I asked the guy what was the most popular menu item and with an attitude he said 'whatever you want' So we decided on the $1.25/oz steak cooked rare. It came out well done and inedible so I sent it back and they brought out another one over cooked. I told the waiter what happened and he grabbed the plate, rolled his eyes and took it back to the kitchen AGAIN. Did they even bother to comp their screw up?? NO! First off the food was amazing we got the pizza, salad and mostaccioli family meal deal for $35. When I got home I discovered we got a square pizza and I thought we were getting a round pizza. I called the restaurant and explained I'm not a fan of square pizza and I was told that I needed to say I wanted round or they give square automatically. I told them I had gotten round pizza there a number of times and they insisted it was my fault for not specifying. The portion size of the salad was smaller than what I have received when dining in. Again the quality and taste were great, but the portion size based on cost and how I was treated when I called about the round pizza left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

The quality of the food is high but the prices are so incredibly high its almost unbelievable. I live in the area but rarely go because you don't get what you pay for. Other local options like Benvenuto or the Crews Inn are much better IMO. read more

This establishment did not impress me at all. Lived here in town for 3 years reluctant to ever try because I heard it was not to good. It was true. Our pasta dishes where HORRIBLE! Pasta was mush, meal too hot to eat making the sauce like soup, and shrimp was under cooked. Should of stuck with the bar food from the menu not as hard to cook. Also, my mother's margarita had all the salt at the bottom of the glass and she didn't enjoy it much. Places like this need to mark the menu and let their patrons know what the favorite meals are because the menu is very extensive. And casino pasta and shrimp scampi pasta is not there specialty! read more

Management was rude but so was their waitress. She ran away mid sentence all the time. Waited to get water several times , had to repeatedly ask for stuff and waitress was not friendly. We had to ask her to not leave so we could order dessert not sure what was going on but she didn't seem to like her job. We have a two year old and all the ladies, especially Donna give him extra attention and make sure he's staying busy with coloring, talking to him, etc! the food is awesome, portions are huge, and staff are super kind. I went with a small group from work. We drove by, and opted to turn around and go in. I wasn't sure what to expect based off the outside. The building is in great shape, but seeing River Rat...where I'm from, River Rat is something you see floating or washed up, not quite an appetizing mental image. We were seated promptly-the place was pretty empty, granted it was only 4PM. Our waiter was funny, always there when we needed him, nice, and did a great job. The food...wow. I ordered fish and chips with a salad. It was some of the best food that I have ever had. Very tasty, perfectly seasoned, tender, and all that good stuff. If I ever visit that area again, I'd gladly go there. As it is now, I'm disappointed that we don't have one where I live! read more

Decided to chance a visit, despite the name after my wife was mailed a menu with a $10 off $40 coupon. The place was packed - which is a good thing (go where the locals go), and we were seated quickly. We were served a fresh bread basket (my daughters were immediately hooked), and our waiter was attentive (drinks were always full). I ordered the Fish and chips and wasn't disappointed! Hand-battered, HUGE pieces of fish for a reasonable price. I got a cup of the clam chowder and it was great - and I'm a bit strict with clam chowder. My kids got chicken tenders and grilled cheese and both enjoyed their dishes. With 2 adult meals and 2 kids meals, plus drinks and soups/salads, we BARELY got over the 40 dollar mark. I'd count that as a great family meal out! Next time, I'm going to go for the ribeye steak - you can pay by the ounce and choose your size! read more

After a second visit to the River Rat, with exceedingly high hopes, we were a bit disappointed in the service and quality of the food. My wife had the blue cheese dressing and it was obviously from a bottle. No loving went into that dressing. River Rat, can you add some crumbled blue cheese t your blue cheese dressing? I had the meat loaf and although it was OK, I question the need to smother it in rather large slices of mushrooms. It was like I got a saute'd mushroom dinner with a meat loaf side. I ordered a bowl of chili, was told by the server it was an additional $1.00 with the meal and I said OK, assuming I was getting a bowl as I specifically asked for. I got a cup, not a bowl and it was luke-warm, at best. Apart from the food which was alright but not special that evening, the ambiance was the issue. Apparently, Friday night is family night or something and the place was really, really loud. I would say it could have easily topped 90db on an audio meter. Ironically, it was much quieter on the bar side. I dislike crowded, noisy restaurants and being seated at a table in the center of the dining area as a party of two is adding insult to injury. Was never given the option to wait for a booth. Lesson learned here. Lastly, almost $45.00 for meatloaf and mashed potatoes with a cup of cold chili, chicken parmesan and one drink including tip is a bit steep in my opinion. I know the place has to make a profit but we didn't order perch and steak. I know places where I can get the same fare with more for much less. All in all, not that great. read more

We were looking for a new place to have dinner and went on an adventure north on jefferson. While looking at yelp, we found river rat and had great reviews so we thought let's try it. The name threw me off but I get the slang. When we walked in it was pretty casual and very laid back. The waiter was attentive and very helpful with deciding the specials to order. My date ordered a breaded chicken beast with Asiago cheese with spinach. This is a bad ass dish and she was in heaven. The amogue dipping sauce was amazing also. I ordered the steak and it was good. II was there on Monday this past week with some friends. This was the worse food I e had In a long time. Potatoes Anna was cold and not done. I had walleye there was several big bones in it. I show the waitress and she did nothing. I ended up not esting it. The side salad was skimpy didn't even fill the bowl. I got a carry out order of crab cakes. When I got home my husband said they looked and tasted like the ones you get at Kroger's for a couple dollars. The baked potatoes was not done At all it wasn't even edible. Wl definitely not return. Exterior was neat, well maintained, and inviting. Interior was cozy, upscale casual, and clean. Restroom was exceptionally clean. Wait staff was very attentive and personable, with attention to detail. The food choices provided a good selection, and common dishes with a creative flair were offered. Great seafood and ribs. I see a lot of people ordering pizza, but have not myself. Their regular dinner salad is like a Michigan salad. Not just lettuce and tomatoes. We (my wife and I) tried this restaurant today. It's a pretty nice place, quite clean and organized. We expected very little and it was much nicer than we would have suspected!! Our service was wonderful!!! The food? It's good. We both opted for the fish. I had mashed potatoes and they were awful. The cole slaw was about average, nothing real special. The fish was WAY better than most places in this area of the country. We also tried the Santa Ana potatoes and they were pretty bad. The prices were quite competetive and their menu included quite a few different types of selections. I'd give this place 3 1/2 stars if I could.
