My wife and I stopped by The Roost for breakfast, and it definitely lived up to its reputation…read more I ordered the corned beef hash with scrambled eggs and sourdough toast. The corned beef hash was outstanding, crispy where it should be, tender where it counts, and clearly made by someone who actually cares. You can taste the effort. The scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked too. Now, about that "sourdough." I have to confess I'm a bit of a sourdough snob after spending time eating the real deal in San Francisco. This wasn't sourdough. It was good white bread wearing a fake mustache. That said, it was fresh, buttery, and the marmalade was absolutely delicious, so I still happily cleaned my plate. The coffee is self-serve and bottomless, which I actually like. If you're the type who enjoys topping off your own cup whenever you want, it's perfect. If getting up to refill your coffee feels like an Olympic event, you may disagree. Service was friendly, fast, and exactly what you hope for at a breakfast spot, attentive without hovering. We visited around 8:30 on a Saturday morning. Since it's a college town and summer break was in full swing, it wasn't busy at all. I'd expect it to be a much different story once students are back. Overall, I'd absolutely come back. Just one request for The Roost: either upgrade to real sourdough... or call it white bread. My inner bread critic will thank you.

She earned an A+ and her tip reflected that. That said, my friend and I were both extremely upset about the lack of options for lunch. Everything on the menu was brunch and the options for that were not great. It took us quite a while to finally decide on what we would have. I had the quiche Lorraine with sweet potato fries and a salad. The sweet potato fries were OK, but the quiche was cold and I ended up eating less than half of my food. My friend ordered the blue crab benny which came with home fries. Her potatoes were cold and she also ate less than half her food because she said she didn't like it. I will accept blame for not realizing J Wilson doesn't serve lunch on weekends, but the quality of the food is on them. When I come to Lawrence, it's almost always on a Saturday, so I will not be having lunch at J Wilson's again.

I had the medium rare bone-in ribeye for $49. It was slightly over cooked but not by much. I didn't like the taste of the rub/sauce on the steak as it tasted a little sour. I've never eaten a steak at a steakhouse with this taste. It was certainly unique. I loved the lump crab cakes though; very moist and creamy. The service was great. Our waiter was attentive and offered a free coffee cake for a birthday celebration. J. Wilson's has an average 4.3 stars on Yelp which is really good. However, the bone-in ribeye was underwhelming. I would rather pay $20-30 more for a more exceptional steak. P.S. my brother also could not finish his KC Strip.

But my server, Crystal, was incredibly attentive and helpful! Maybe it's because I was right next to a POS system but I feel like even if I hadn't been, she would have been just as attentive! Of course, the food is nothing to write home about, but it's served hot and generally delivered with a friendly face. Payden was a great server and made sure that we had plenty of fresh coffee and checked on us frequently at this visit. IHOP doesn't do all the fancy breakfasts, but if you ask for some modifications or maybe even something off-menu, I bet they'll accommodate you. They do have an avocado toast option for the healthy types, but for those of us just there to eat more than 1000 cal in a breakfast setting, eggs, bacon, and whatever high-carb side you add goes down right. Prices have definitely gone up, as is the case pretty much everywhere. A full-on diner breakfast runs you about $14 now, which is still within range of the value. You're getting a nice comfortable setting, great service, and decent food. Put all those things together and that's probably why their successful brand has been around for as long as it has.
