This is mostly intended for my Virginia friends but when a business excels in so many ways, it deserves to be noted. Robynn and i have deleberately avoided participating in any black friday shopping for all the reasons we're all so familiar with. But my wife has recently become a "backpacker" and I wanted to get her fitted for a legitimate backpack so we made an exception to our black friday rule and went to the only place I would go to locally backpacking and other outdoor gear, River Rock Outfitter Even though the shop was filled with customers, Keith and April, the owners, immediately greeted us. When April finished with her customer she began the process for fitting my with a backpack. This process which included measuring her torso, what type of backpacking it was for day hikes or multiple day/night trips, types of weather, trying on multiple packs (with weigjts in the pack) took approximately 40 minutes, maybe more, but it was such a pleasant experience, it only seemed like minutes. My wife and April found the perfect pack but since it was not in the color my wife wanted, April placed in on order. We'll return in a day or two, try it on again and walk out with an early Christmas present for my wife we will now be able to share and enjoy many more years of backpacking together with a comfortable backpack. We came in today looking for straps for our Eno hammocks. They were sold out, but super helpful about finding out when they would be arriving in stock. I plan to wait and buy them here. In the meantime they have a huge selection of quality items. Tons of outdoor gear and cute clothes from brands like Prana, Chacos, etc. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They can also steer your in the right direction if you are on the fence about which product will work best for you. We were passing through Fredericksburg, VA on our way to Shenandoah National Park when I discovered I forgot my hiking socks. I was lucky to find River Rock Outfitter!!! We stopped in the store & were treated by two very friendly staff members (the guy with the beard & girl who is the hiking expert--sorry I didn't get your nanes) who helped me find my Darn Tough socks. We made small talk & I told them we were heading to Shenandoah. They actually looked up some cool hikes for me while I was looking g around the store. This was greatly appreciated because I never asked them too. This is what you get at local stores...customer service! This store so excellent gear & I would highly recommend it. What a great outdoor shop. Both times I've been in the shop their customer service has been incredible. I asked April about a sleeping bag for my pup and since she didn't have one in the shop she shot off a few messages (while I was still in the shop) to the supplier and local reps to try and get more info and said she would text with the answer when she got it. I've done a fair amount of business with River Rock over the years and have always found their service to be exceptional and the products rock solid. I recently tried their consignment program by dropping off a couple of sweater-type garments I haven't worn in a while. A couple of days later they were sold. Amazing shop! April and her team are the reason Fredericksburg VA is the great town that it is. Customer focused...great prices...and the personal touch that makes you want to come back! She helped us pick out kayaks, paddles and life vest that worked best for us..walked us through the features (and how to use them) on the kayaks and didn't let us leave until everything was right! On top of this...she is delivering the boats to our house. We wanted to spend our money in small businesses within our community with all that is going on...no regrets! They welcome you with open arms as you walk thru the door, but instantly profile you. They stay GLUED to your side the whole damn time. The younger guy asked us me and my girlfriend if we were from around here and just kept asking weird questions trying to see if we had a real purpose being in there or not. Well we did. We're into camping, hiking & always looking for more gear so we decided to pop in the local shop. Earlier that day I scored a kelty pack at the goodwill for $2 dollars so we were excited and wanted to get some more gear. It's a terrible experience. We were there about 6 months prior and my girlfriend had to tell the guy to leave us alone because we're not trash like the majority of our younger community & wouldn't be stealing. I don't know. It makes me sad because they do have some cool things like the therma rest I've wanted for a little while at the same price as online & I wouldn't have to pay for shipping except gas but you know. Fuck that. I will not be giving them any money and that's a damn shame. So be fortunate if they don't profile you because of your attire. You'd think they'd be cool with people who are a little more rugged seeing how passer bys would be interested in a shop such as river rock outfitters but nah dawg. It's a nurrrr from me. The crew at River Rock is amazing. My boyfriend and I originally stopped in the store new to the purchase climbing gear. Everyone was so helpful with our questions and very friendly in general. We ended up signing up for climbing lessons with Keith and learned a lot. He catered our session to our skill level, and it was it felt like we were out climbing with a friend. My wife and I love Fredericksburg and after seeing a sign for River Rock Outfitters one day, we thought it would be fun to try our hand at kayaking. April greeted us when we came into the store and was incredibly friendly and patient explaining everything to us and even picked out different kayaks that she thought would be suitable to me and my wife. We also explored the store a bit - If you are a serious outdoorsman, definitely check this shop out, they have a LOT! Keith and another staff member, I don't remember his name, walked us and the kayaks out and helped us load up. It was a lot of fun being on the water, the area is just beautiful! We only spent a few hours out there - it's hard work haha! the staff met us back out there to bring our kayaks up.
