EXPERT tailoring means quality work - this place is the best place in Austin. The owner and his wife are very friendly, and Mr. Rivera is a top-notch tailor. If you want dirt cheap pricing - go somewhere else and keep your fingers crossed. What you pay for here is an expert's skill and time. I have brought no less than 9 dresses and 5 pairs of pants in the last 8 years, along with a handbag handle repair, and I have been extremely satisfied each time. He is in high demand, and while most of my tailoring jobs with Rivera Tailor have been done in days, don't expect an in-depth alteration (gown, for example) to be done overnight. Be sure to bring your stuff to him as soon as you know you need it! I delayed once on a maid-of-honor dress and he was not able to do it in my 3-week timeline - I think most tailors would have required close to 6-8 weeks for an in-depth tailoring job like a gown requires - so I was sorely disappointed when I got my maid of honor dress back from somewhere else because it was too tight. Some idiots on here are complaining about a quoted price because "In NYC..." - blah-blah-blah. If you're a cheapskate, just say that; don't take it out on this business. read more

I don't know how he came up with these prices, but way, way expensive for simple jobs. He probably loss a few hundred dollars in business. We both need a tailor for our suits, slacks, etc. The pair of slacks was a simple job. Just sew a 4 inch area that got un sewed in the seating area. Maybe 60 seconds by a sewing machine. Maybe. I usually paid $5 to $8 in NYC. Very simple job. Received a $17 quote. The jeans just needed a patch to cover a hole. I brought the material and received a $23 quote. Don't understand Rivera Custom Tailor & Alterations price points. The garments did not need detail or fine tailoring. Whatever the case this review should be a two star review, but he is free to charge what he wants. But, he should remember fair pricing for the area. Supply and demand. I brought a skirt here to have it hemmed and it cost me $35. They are extremely expensive and didn't even hem it to the correct length. The owner's daughter said they would call me when the alteration was ready but three weeks later I was still waiting. I finally got so fed up I physically went in to ask and they had trouble even finding my order. They ended up finding my skirt but there was no apology for the inconvenience or the long wait time. I've used them a few times over the years. The time before las, I took in a pair of pants that needed a few inches taken off. They had me try them on, pinned them up, all the usual things, fine. I came back a few days later. Those pants were a good 4 inches shorter than they had been marked. Looked like I was getting ready for a deep flood. Anyway, they fixed them up, no charge. I went back again thinking it was just a fluke. My pants needed to be shortened again and they had a split hem. Said it would cost extra to have them shorten them and to create a new split. Ok I'll pay. Got them back and what do you know, no split hem anymore. Sigh. They are close to my house and are pretty inexpensive. But I just can't trust them anymore. read more

I was very excited to find anew alterations place close to home..... then I walked in the door..... The man that was working was disinterested with helping us. He had my partner change into her suit and then eventually walked over. After pulling on the suit for about 30 seconds he said it was impossible to alter....?!? All it needed was shortening (from a regular to short) I could do it, but I don't have time that is why I was taking it to someone to pay THEM to do it.... I tried to talk to him and ask why he couldn't do it, but he just repeated it was impossible.... we left immediately and went to soco cleaners and alterations. They were horrified that we were told the changes couldn't be made because they were such simple changes to make. Save your time and money. Skip this place. A shop small enough to miss if you aren't paying attention. I took in a striped cotton dress to be repaired, because it had a tear in the sleeve. I wasn't in a hurry, so it was scheduled that I would pick it up in a week. The staff is all nice... Seems like it may be a family business. I think the work cost about $9. I don't know if that is a lot to repair a 5 inch tear, (as I have little experience with tailors), but they did a fine job, and it was worth it for me to not have to try to do some hack job myself. I had a zipper put in a dress and decided on a different color than the one that was originally there as an accent color. They installed a zipper and took in the dress to hide the new zipper which in turn took an 1" out of the dress. The only response I got was, "well the material is stretchy it will be fine," then he just walked away. Customer service is sub par at best. They didn't even install the new zipper to look like the old zipper. Why would I choose a different color if it was going to be hidden? Looks like I will be looking for someone else. read more
