We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this waterfront cafe. We came specifically for the Greek specialties based on some recommendations and we'll be back. The Greek salad is fresh with deep green lettuce and fully ripe tomatoes. My wife had the Pasticcio Greek Lasagne with its characteristically cinnamon sweetness and creamy bechamel on top. I chose the Bifteki Greek platter with two grilled patties of blended meats and Mediterranean seasonings, served with crispy fries and fresh warm pita wedges. The view is wonderful. The food on the other side was just ok. I ordered a gyro sandwich with no onions and a New England clam chowder. Well, the sandwich was loaded with red onions and the chowder had very little clams and the broth was more like chicken soup with cream. Was no impressed. read more

The food tasted great, but the portions did not match the price! The Fish and chips was served with only two small pieces of cod. The chicken platter was served with two small tenderloins and only a little handful of fries. If that's normal, then it's definitely overpriced! Marsha was our server and she was incredibly rude, she waited a good 20 minutes even to approach our table and when she did she thought it was humorous to make a request for an allergy. she did not understand a simple request of checking buns for ingredients and just assumed everything but salad wouldn't be an option when another server confirmed this wasnt the case. overall my experience was awful but Marsha herself may have been the only deciding factor. read more

Decided to stop in Saint Mary's for the night at a B & B- The Spencer House- very nice. The Riverside Cafe definitely a casual kind of family owned restaurant- so glad my bf suggested sitting outside as being later we got one of the few tables. Not only was the food wonderful but the fresh air made it so nice after being in a car all day. We shared the stuffed eggplant - it was a vegetarian dish & even though we are not vegetarians --Wow was it unbelievably delicious. We also had the Ahi Tuna blackened- was also very good- cooked the way we asked med - rare. We also split a wonderful Greek salad & baklava for dessert! Wine menu is limited to one house but a decent one. However, they had a great beer selection! read more

Apparently this is the place to go when you're in Saint Simons! I've been here once 3 years ago, but with this recent visit, it makes me wish there was a Riverside Cafe in Jacksonville. When it comes to authentic Greek cuisine, this is Luke's first choice- he mentioned he use to frequent this place when he used to volunteer in Cumberland Island. This was perfect, especially since we were able to make this our post Cumberland dinner stop, plus his mom's favourite spot as well! We were immediately sat down and served. We had to wait a bit for Luke but we ordered by the time he arrived. The food was phenomenal! I ordered the Riverside Wrap specialty and I wish I ordered another to take home! Their Greek salad was also very fresh, and their French fries were ridiculously good - crispy but not oily. Pair those fries with their Tzatziki sauce and it was a match made in heaven! Unfortunately we had to ask a few times for extra sauce, which cause extra, and they do not serve side salads. We didn't get the side salad with Luke's wrap, so our waitress said we had to order a large salad since they don't sell sides separately. At least we had the leftovers, right? We were stuffed after our entrees but always save room for dessert! The key lime pie and chocolate cheesecake were relatively good, but nothing to write home about. I wish they had their napoleons still since I've heard good things about that! Overall I enjoyed our meal at Riverside Cafe. I'll be sure to make this my go-to next time I'm nearby! Unfortunately, I think Riverside Cafe is one of those restaurants which relies on its "view" and scarcity of other restaurants in town so it slacks on the actual food and value. The menu is somewhat limited, the service was superficially friendly but VERY rushed, and the prices were quite high. We were charged $8 for one beer and the desserts are also $8 each. I added fries to a sandwich and was charged extra for that, too. I can't honestly remember ever being at a sit-down restaurant where I had to pay separately for fries for a sandwich. As a cost comparison, we ate at a local seafood restaurant in Kingsland and my entire meal (salad, seafood main, fries, hush puppies, drink) was LESS than $15. Speaking of desserts, the piece of cheesecake we got was slathered in super sweet strawberry sauce, and get this ... had ONE HALF of a strawberry on top! It was almost laughable until you get the check. So the pictures on various websites, reviews, etc. were either doctored by management or they have significantly cut back on fruit toppings. The baklava was also a disappointment - dry, hard, very little honey sauce, no cinnamon flavor to speak of, and they give you a steak knife to cut it --- that should be a clue. read more

This is The Best restaurant in town. I have never had a bad meal there in the years we've been going there. Their Rueben and Gyros are wonderful. Salads are fresh. It's not on their menu but they will gladly make their patty melt for you. All you have to do is ask. Their desserts are marvelous. Riverside is a favorite of our family. We make a point to go whenever we come to visit family here. We went to Riverside Cafe later in the evening with a group of nine. Although they close the kitchen at 8:30, they willingly accommodated our group. I was able to get the orders from the family who were joining us so the kitchen could begin preparing our meals while people were still enroute, and every order was delivered perfectly, exactly as ordered. The Greek salads were fresh and flavorful. The tzatziki was cool and refreshing. The gyros were delish. I went back two days later with a friend and had a fantastic dinner of dolmas (stuffed grape leaves!) and the bifteki platters. The bifteki was very reminiscent of meals I'd had when I lived on Crete! Do not miss the cheesecakes! They are absolutely divine, and very light and fluffy! The view from the balcony is gorgeous. My husband and I recently spent 4 days in St. Mary's and this restaurant was our favorite. I had the lemon chicken rice soup and the pasticcio. I'll honestly admit that I thought the soup had too much lemon but I was able to cut the tartness with crackers. Maybe hopefully, they'll see this review and tone it down some since a waiter told me that he had also had other customers make the same complaint. Although I have a complaint, I'm still giving them 5 stars because the soup wasn't enough to persuade me otherwise. The pasticcio is a Greek-style lasagna layered with penne pasta, seasoned ground beef, and topped with their homemade béchamel sauce. That lasagna was so delicious and the portion size was huge. The seasoned ground beef had us perplexed because of the spice in it. We couldn't decide what it was but without asking the waitstaff, we decided on it being nutmeg which was a welcome flavor. It honestly wasn't a flavor I expected but it was so tasty. The béchamel was delicious and a welcome addition to the lasagna. My husband had the gyro sandwich with fries. He gave me a bite of his sandwich and that one bite was scrumptious. The lamb and beef were delicious, but the tzatziki sauce with the cucumber and dill was my favorite part. So refreshing & delicious. Outstanding! My husband also raved about the fries! They were hot and crispy. Fresh out of the fryer for sure. The place was cute and cozy. What a delightful meal in a great setting outside in the balcony overlooking the water and Cumberland Island! You MUST order a cup of the Greek Lemon Chicken Rice Soup which is the best I have had in decades!!!! I also enjoyed the moussaka and the yummy pita bread served with it. The owner of this restaurant is disrespectful and insulting. I came to have dinner with friends and what I thought was going to be a great evening quickly turned into a disastrous one. I witnessed discrimination from the owner to a group with children. As they walked in I saw the owners face quickly turn into an irritated one. The group was sat down and while one of the kids was clearly upset from being hot and just need a drink, they looked like a friendly bunch that just wanted dinner and drinks from a decent place. The group put their orders in and that's when things went south. The owner, from across the counter proceeded to YELL and humiliate this woman that she needs to leave and go outside for her child to "unwind." The woman tried to explain that her child was just needing food and a drink but the owner proceeded to tell her that she needs to step out after he grabbed his sign saying that the policy was that "obnoxious children need to be taken outside to keep a good atmosphere for other guests." First of all, what atmosphere? This is a low scale, restaurant where the food is definitely subpar at best. The staff (other than the management) is friendly, but this is not the Ritz people. It's literally a diner. I proceed to watch the owner yell at this lady and reduce her to tears. He's unprofessional and this business needs to be removed from our riverfront. What kind of riverfront restaurant that features seafood also doesn't sell any calamari or crab cakes due to rising prices? Clearly you're doing bad post pandemic if you can't afford to make certain dishes. Maybe you should be kind to your patrons and treat them properly because clearly the service industry is not for you. read more

Waiters seem "small town -like" call everyone darling and sweetheart and sugar. But they share their political views and discuss the belief that the pandemic doesn't exist + don't wear masks and wipe their noses while delivering food to tables so no thanks. What a great dinner! We had the shrimp Santorini for an appetizer...fresh shrimp sautéed with garlic olive oil onions, olives, so good. My husband had the grilled pork chop which was a special, also very good. The Moussaka was delicious. We met the owner who prides himself on fresh ingredients and cooking things to order. I wish we had found this place before it was time to leave the area. We watched her as she ate her lunch and talked with her co-workers; never looking our way to see if we needed anything. Finally, when she did check back, I asked for, and received an extra ramekin of tsatsiki sauce. The waitress never mentioned there would be an extra $5.50 charge for a condiment. I could see the Key Lime pie in the display case - wasn't the right color so we declined. She went to get our check and then ignored us. I knew she knew we were waiting. But she kept us waiting. I finally showed her my credit card from across the room and she said she was getting it. When she finally brought the bill she had attitude. Got no idea why. On our way driving north from Orlando to DC, we stopped in St. Marys for lunch. I had intended to go to Lang's, but it wasn't until after we parked that we discovered it's actually two blocks down the street. There was some sort of big festival going on there with a band and we just wanted to eat and get back on the road, so we decided to just pop into one of the places next to where we parked. We figured this Riverside Cafe place couldn't be bad since all the outdoor tables were full. We were wrong. It's a modestly decorated place in a country kitchen sort of theme with local artwork on the walls. They have a dozen four-top tables with green and white checkered table clothes inside, plus 5 tables outside. It wasn't exactly clean. The table cloth had crumbs leftover from the previous customers, and there were bits of food and straw wrappers on the floors. The restrooms are outdoors on the back of the building, and they stank to high heaven. They smelled worse than a port-a-potty and were worse than your average truck stop restroom. They have a very wide variety of choices on menu. You can order anything from fried seafood to gyros. Thumbs up for Coke products. The kids' meals came with ice cream, and they have an ice cream display case sort of like B&R with 8 flavors of hard-pack ice cream. The service was timely, but seemed half asleep and not very friendly or excited to have us there. The food was simple - like we had gone over to someone else's house for a barbecue. My wife and I both had cheeseburgers that tasted fine. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing "wow." I had bacon on my cheeseburger, but it was mostly chewy fat. Total bill for two adult cheeseburgers (one with bacon) and two kids meals plus soft drinks was $46 (with taxes, before tip). That's substantially more than I would have expected to pay for similar food and service elsewhere. Bottom line - we paid too much for so-so food, blah service, in a not-very-clean restaurant. In the end, I wish we had braved the festival and walked the two blocks to Lang's. read more

Looking for a place to stop for lunch with family, we located two sisters on our gps. Though once parked we noticed the cafe with a full patio. We figured must be pretty good being that busy. As we entered it was busy but still places to sit. We told the one waitress we had six in our party and she had a busser put some tables together. At the same time another waitress was telling people to sit anywhere. This of course caused a couple to take our table. The waitress had to ask them to move which they were not happy about. Well we had two grilled cheeses, patty melt, grilled chicken sandwich, fish & chips and a ham & cheese omelet. Everything was good and prepared fine. Though the waitress did have to re-ask one of our orders. The coleslaw was in a small plastic side dish was good but barely a bite. The first impression was not a good start off. It was a bit over crowded and we asked to be seated at an area that had less people seated and were told that was only for larger groups. Once seated the waitress was very friendly and helpful. Wife had the Ruben which was ok and I had the burger with cheese.
