The best way to illustrate the problem is to point out that Santa Fe Airport is an international airport, but none of the Santa Fe Trails bus routes go there--at all, ever. You see gloriously happy people hiking and biking on the wonderful walking trails, but when it comes to grocery shopping, appointments, school, work, etc. the middle class simply gets in their car and drives. If you live near Route 4, which is reliable and useful, you are fine. But most of the city of Santa Fe is simply inaccessible by public transportation, and they do not care.

We were sent from their parking spot by the Loretto Chapel to the pickup point across from the La Fonda hotel by a staff member. Being late afternoon, it was very hot, and the fellow in the trolley wasn't engaging with any of us in line on the sidewalk until I spoke up and asked, "Are you boarding yet?" and then he kind of snapped to and started selling us tickets, and we all were able to sit down in the shade. Tickets were $25 per person for a 1.25 hour tour. At first I thought it was just going to be "this building is real Adobe and this one isn't" because there was a lot of that to begin with, but the tour encompassed architecture, history (including some of the grittier aspects), popular culture, and local information. It covered the area around the Plaza as well as Canyon Road and up toward Museum Hill. A worthwhile tour especially if you are needing a break later in the day.

Christian, who I believe owns the business (?), is very friendly and directed us to a tour leaving outside La Fonda hotel, because he said there weren't enough people to run twice the number of tours (we intended to take one of the three daily tours outside Loretto Chapel -- but the only ones running at this time are outside La Fonda. So he walked us right over to where the other tour was leaving from and that was very nice and helpful. The only complaint about the tour is they _pack_ that little bus full. Depending on the size of the other people in your row, you might be really squeezed and uncomfortable the whole time. I was wedged at one end for the entire trip, and my whole side and arm are very sore now many hours later. It's a couple narrow steps up to get into the bus (hard to describe -- just trust me!) which is fine for any healthy person with normal mobility but an older person or person with any little challenge with their mobility might struggle! I'm still glad to have taken the tour, but maybe they can break out the second tour bus and not pack us in quite so tightly? Really enjoyable and interesting though!

I waited here for the rail runner train to Albuquerque, which arrived perfectly on time, and was painless to figure out even for a visitor like me. You just wait based on the schedule, it shows up, and you can buy your ticket online or on-board. You can also buy a day pass, which is worth it if you plan to ride more than one way, a significant savings. This stop has a large parking lot for commuters, and bike lockers for those who routinely would bike to and/or from the stop. It's right in the heart of the downtown area of Santa Fe, and there are plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop nearby while you wait. For me, it was an excellent junction point for my trip. Served it's purpose, this public transit is GREAT, and the ABQ/Santa Fe area is lucky to have it.

On the evening of July 25, I received an email from the limo owner Deanna Ballard stating that they could not provide the service at the quoted price. She said the trip cost is now $1,500! With only a couple of days notice, I was unable to hire anyone and ended up driving them to Santa Fe. It was 630 miles roundtrip. When I asked her about the substantial difference the quote and the actual price, Deanna stated that her website gave an inaccurate quote. I asked why they didn't reach out in the beginning of June, so we could make other arrangements, she had no answer. I was curious, so I requoted the exact fare on her website https://wtmllc.com The fare came up as $348. I called her back and asked about the fare, and she said it will still be $1,500 and that she had a client in a similar emergency situation and also charged them $1500 for their fare. Do not trust the quote you receive, it is a "Bait and Switch". At the last minute they will cancel your limo unless you pay the jacked up price. Which is why the Atomic City Transit is such a nice bus line. While visiting Bandalier National Monument and enjoying lunch in the picnic area, I noticed these colorful buses that appeared regularly in the parking lot. They were the Atomic City Transit buses, which operate from 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday except for holidays. It is important to know that during the summer months, you cannot drive into the park between 9 and 3. The reason for the shuttle is that a fire and subsequent flooding in the area made this necessary. It's only a 20 minute ride on theshuttle bus. The free shuttle runs from White Rock Visitor Center, about 8 miles from the park entrance. It runs every 20-30 minutes. If you're hiking a distance, you can drive into the park before 9 am and park at the lot by the visitor center. There is a $12 fee. When I tiptoed down to feel the water in Frijoles Creek, (freezing!) I stopped to admire a bus that was on a scheduled break. The Los Alamos buses are clean and neat. They do not look like any of the hard core buses you see in large urban areas. Even better, ACT actually brings you to the local Airport at your request! According to the ACT website, "ACT Route 2 serves the airport (LAM) upon request. Riders should advise the Route 2 driver of airport terminal building destination when boarding the bus. Riders should call 661-RIDE (7433) to request a Route 2 pick-up at the airport terminal building." Imagine that! Calling your city bus to come get you at the airport or drop you off at your request! Even better--ACT has an ACTracker which links to the bus line's real time route information site. Click on this link from any computer or mobile device for route maps and estimated arrival times.
