Visited this restaurant over the weekend with my friends and we had high expectations since the restaurant looked great and the food presentation was top notch. It's definitely pricey but we decided to treat ourselves since we're here in London on a trip. The food was okay but we all fell to food poisoning afterwards. Although we had ordered completely different dishes, sides, and desserts, we all became ill overnight. Extremely disappointed since the food is supposedly high quality however we all had GI issues afterwards. Definitely won't go back. read more

A wonderful dining experience close to Borough Market and The Shard, both of which we had just visited. The roast beef was, of course, memorable and the sides delicious. The grilled octopus and calamari appetizer was as well-prepared as a fine seafood restaurant. And deserts and the extensive list of dessert wines completed an outstanding dining experience. The sommelier was extremely helpful, matching our courses with a wonderful and not over-priced Bordeaux Red. We will go back when next in London. read more

I took my boyfriend to Roast as a surprise to celebrate the end of the week. The restaurant itself nests above Borough market and as we entered there was a lady at a piano singing contemporary music jazz style. All very pleasing. The atmosphere was lively. When we got to order we naturally went for a roast (I think everything on the menu was a roasted something or the other). The price of a main (£30 to £40) is a little steep regardless of the fact that the cow had been reared on golden syrup. However, when the food came it was delicious. It's like having a really posh Sunday roast dinner in the evening. Beef was cooked to perfection. The wine list is extensive (and expensive) but worth going for something good. First Impression: Beautiful restaurant over looking the Borough Market, clean and bright Hostess- one of the taller one asked if we wanted to see the menu before seating us - translation- Can you afford it? But I was not going to have a racist ignorant person ruin my lunch and we wanted to get out of the cold :) Food: ordered Fried Liver, Lentil and onion soup , Hake, and apple crumb. It's shame that Sunday Roast is literally available for only Sunday whilst other shops in the market is closed. Despite tranquility in Borough Market, this restaurant was in the fiesta mood. It was too busy. Really busy and couldn't hear my husband who sat approx 50-60cm away from me. I was almost going to have a conversation with him via Watsapp. Restaurant itself is not that small, but chaotically too many people for the venue, too many tables and chairs were squeezed, which gave me an impression that the restaurant hasn't conduct space plan properly. At 14:30, I saw many people were still waiting to be seated in the bar. YOU MUST BOOK!!! I didn't like a toilet seat being smaller than the toilet. I liked an environment conscious statement over Dyson hand dryer that they care. Service 5/5 We had an impressive server, Parvez. He was a multitasker doing many different things at one time. He served us really well in that busy environment that was impressive hence asking his name. He was observant and prioritized our comfort in his capacity that was impeccable. There are two specific examples that made us think his service was impeccable. In that busy environment, he managed to serve toasted bread. A dessert, Chocolate Tart was too cold and too hard to slice and eat, so I had to ask a knife. Not sure if chocolate mouse part was too cold, I couldn't taste any. Parvez anticipated my disappointment when he brought a knife, he didn't force me to eat this cold too hard tart, but instead he offered me to have another dessert and suggested me to go for Apple Crumble. He knew the food he is serving so I trusted him that was right thing to do, Food 3/5 Usually I go to restaurant to spend this much money so, I didn't think it was too expensive, but none food was memorable or unforgettable except Chicken and Pressed Ham starter. I really liked Chicken and Ham starter served with white creamy mustard...? not sure what that was but it was well balanced. I had Roast Beef and my husband had Lamb Shoulder. I think beef was kinda ok chewy. Since I had one from Hawksmoor off from Regent Street, I have to say their meat is much better. If I was to order this plate alone, I pay no more than tenner. The outer layer of roasted potatoes were not crispy, so it was hard to cut (with meat knife... so it must be really elastic layer). Bit of rosemary was a plus and I would actually add more rosemary in there. Loved Yorkshire pudding and gravy. I think I wanted to have more gravy sauce as gigantic Yorkshire pudding sucked all. I could have asked but, it was too busy and couldn't really afford to ask for it. I had two bites of aforementioned dessert Chocolate Tart. It was so hard to slice. I used my forearm muscle to slice, which made me tired and couldn't enjoy the taste. It was also too cold to taste. If possible I would leave this tart in the room temperature for longer so that I could taste the sweetness and the bitterness... shame. Apple Crumble was nice. I had it with ice cream and custard both. I liked it with ice cream as it was just came out from oven, very hot. Nice texture, enough softness and not too sweet, but flat flavor... no accent... Scored 3/5, mainly from Pressed ham and Chicken... Overall 3.5, but I can either give 3 points or 4 points. In this case I give 4 scores because Parvez's service was impressive that I normally have in five stars hotels. I was at Roast with 10 friends on Sunday 16.11.11 from 12 to 2.30. The food was good and the service very good and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal until it became the time to pay. The bill had 2 bottles of wine on it, though only one was received at the table so we brought this to the waiters attention, they were not too pleased but relinquished and we paid our bill of £500 odd. We were rudely kicked off of our table as they supposedly had some diners waiting for it though they were not to be seen and we had finished up as quickly as possible but their sorting the bill had delayed us for 10 minutes. We were then informed that there would be an extra charge of £10 per head for the 8 that didn't appear, we had booked a table for up to 20 but this had been resolved before arrival and we had a table for 12. This was disputed by us and we left. Once down the road I then realised that the bottle of wine that I had paid for had been over charged up from £24 to £28 plus 12.5% service charge on top. The cold tomato soup was absolutely delicious, the chicken salad on endive was so flavourful (and I don't even like chicken) and the olives were so so good. The bread, a little dry and floury. The service, pretty good for London, but I don't know why wait staff can't be more attentive or friendly in such a world-class city. The food, space, and presentation were all quite excellent. As promised, the food was outstanding - great meat and have to say the mash potato was a sculptured vegetable masterpiece. However, I can only it give the review 3 stars as the service was appalling. We were a big table on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very busy but the waiting was far from attentive. For the price, I expected much more (or even to be asked if the meal was okay). We hadnt planned on coming here but after arriving at Borough Market and remembering that we didnt have any cash and was starving, we walked to find a restaurant that would take credit cards. I am sure glad we came here! We came here during lunch without a reservation and was seated right away. Husband ordered the fish and chips and I got the sea cod. The cod was the BEST I have ever tasted. The skin was perfectly crisped and the whole dish was well seasoned with the mashed potatoes and sea greens. Best meal I had while I was in London. read more

Great location for the restaurant, right above borough market. Loved the ambience inside though it was a bit loud as we were seated right next to the kitchen. Delicious. I ate at Roast tonight for the first time - I love it when you find new, delicious places that you'd be happy to dine at again for your very next meal! On this particular occasion I met up with some people for dinner that I had been introduced to through a mutual colleague, almost like a "blind date" but for future colleagues :) Anyway, its located a short walk south of the London Bridge in a very cool little market. A lot of nice looking bars around the corner as well if you want to keep the night going after dinner. The decor was chique if a little sterile. Definitely not a good place for a first date, maybe a good friend, definitely good for business dinners. In terms of cuisine, probably not a good place for vegetarians. There were some veggie options, but it was quite meat-heavy. In a good way though for us omnivores! I was feeling like a light meal so I opted for one of their fish dishes. I always have some hesitations ordering fish at a place that specializes in proper meat dishes, but I was not disappointed by any means this time 'round. I opted for the cornish grilled mackerel served with gooseberries, elderflower (elderberries?) and corn salad - for about £15 which though not cheap for my exchange-rate impacted american currency standards, was totally reasonably for the quality and flavour. Also, I got to try some things I'd never had before. I was expecting the corn salad to be of the yellow kernel variety but apparently its more of a leafy, slightly bitter but delicious vegetable - and apparently the plant itself is called corn salad?! anyway, I enjoyed it. Also, while I've been seeing more and more elderflower flavoured drinks around, I had never had it in its pure form before - and I think it may have been the berries? Anyway, there as a good mix of the elderflower and gooseberries (which I'd previously only had as jam) and it was a quite delectable complement to the mackerel. Next time 'round I may opt for the cornish hake or go for a less healthy and maybe call ahead (24hrs notice) for the Roast rib of Welsh Black beef with Yorkshire pudding, creamed horseradish and mustard. mmm... Roast is in a converted industrial space overlooking borough market with an old world ambience however service and food is lackluster at best. Took a group there recently on their set full and veggie brunch menu. The food came promptly but service was non existent. When the bill came, the waiter added a service charge and an extra 90GBP surcharge for a few people who weren't able to join. Surprising since the restaurant was near empty, they had been advised of lower numbers and considering our group had patronized the restaurant quite a number of times before. The food itself (British fare) is dull - left a lot more to be desired. If you want good English food in the area, try Garrison or even Fish with similar ambience. Avoid Roast read more

Sitting by the window with a view of bustling Borough Market is a lovely way to start your weekend. The coffee was great and my breakfast was delicious. I had serious food envy looking around me. Will most definately come again - when you book ask for a table overlooking the market by the glass pane, otherwise there is a risk they will seat you lower. read more

Roast perplexes me. I absolutely loved my dish- pork roast special but absolutely hated my husband's- fillet mignon. My pork was so delicious that I am still thinking about it and looking for a reason to return very soon. It was so moist, so flavorful, and the skin had the greatest light and crispy crunch. My husband's steak on the other hand tasted like it was precooked and rewarmed for serving. Lo and behold, we saw a giant tray of precooked fillet mignons in the kitchen window when we left. Unlike me, he is not in a hurry to go back to Roast. The rest of the dishes were just average. I guess the moral of the story is to eat roasted food at Roast. read more

I've been to Roast a couple of times for breakfast now and will be definitely be going back again sometime soon. Their 'Full Borough' breakfast is amazing - excellent quality sausages and streaky bacon, the best black pudding in the world, crispy fried bread, eggs poached to perfection with lovely runny yokes....I'm starting to drool just thinking about it. At £15 it's a tad more expensive than what you'd usually expect to pay for a fry up but the quality ingredients they use definitely make it worth it. Last time I went we ate before 9am and took advantage of the buy one breakfast get one free offer which made it fantastic value for money. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and I've never felt rushed to leave once I've finished eating. Views of the market below and the dome of St Pauls make it a lovely way to enjoy a leisurely Saturday morning breakfast. read more

Visited Roast on Monday Morning for breakfast. The full Borough beakfast was excellent but was£15. It was excellent and had that been the full cost I would have been content and visited again. Unfortunately I was offered toast which was extra. Also coffee was not included. AThe first very small cup was drinkable the second was bitter. The female staff were friendly. The man who delivered my cooked breakfast said nothing and did not acknowledge my existence at all. The breakfast cost £28. The food was excellent but double the price it should have been. Yes the wine list is over priced as my friend Emma points out... but I cant get away from the space over the market. I discovered it on my first trip to London years ago and typically hit it when I am back for a dinner. So this trip I had surprised my partner with a ticket to join me in London as his Valentines' day surprise and wanted him to see this spot for dinner (as he has heard me talk about it a lot). We had a reservation for 7 and were seated a few minutes early. We shared the bone in filet for 2 and the beef was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. When ever we go borough market we always get a pork sandwich from the Roast hut so nice melts in mouth, tasty and the crackling sot juicy and crunchy. Also have eaten in main restaurant as well and again food very tasty, you get a big portions for your money and the staff are very friendly highly recommend read more

This spot in Borough Market is fancy and has really snobby hostesses which is never a nice thing. They forgot one of our appetizers, and didn't understand a modification request (we went for brunch and I asked for fried eggs instead of poached). But my salmon and egg poach was good otherwise. I also ordered dropped scones not realizing that those aren't scones at all, but more like pancakes (fail!) which were served with stewed fruit (I am not a fan of these - I prefer fresh). I'd been here three times before our visit last Tuesday. I'd loved it the other times so was looking forward to dinner quite a lot. Unfortunately nothing on the menu jumped out at me. Eventually I chose smoked mackerel with various accompaniments to start and mixed grill for main course. The mackerel was good and the stuff which went with it particularly the grapes went well with the oily fish. However, there was only one small bit of fish. A mackerel starter was one of the things I particularly remembered enjoying from a previous visit and there were two fillets then, so I was a little disappointed. I've never ordered a mixed grill before and wasn't sure about just having meat with no vegetables or sauce. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The meat was all high quality and well cooked, the liver and bacon steak particularly stood out but everything was good. Dessert was apple crumble with custard. I'm a crumble man and this gets 7.5/10 in my crumble charts, so good but not exceptional. Overall a four star rating but if I'd reviewed based on my previous memories rather than on last Tuesday's dinner it would be five. read more

Yes you have to look out for the lift entrance, we almost walked round the block before we saw the right in front of us sign. Very light inside and pleasant. Not inexpensive, but you do get a big plateful of quality food. You would have to be very hungry to do 3 courses. Good staff. Useful if you are in the area rather than a special visit, but other reviewers rate the breakfast highly so that might alter my opinion if I get to eat one there. And a goodly number of wines on the list, though most above £32 from what I saw. And not suffering from recession judging by the number of people there on a Monday lunch! read more

Atmosphere was incredible - right above Borough Market. We we there for brunch and the food was good, the streaky bacon was delicious and the bubble and squeak was excellent. Having tried their brunch here a few months ago, I was eager to see how they fared on their namesake. With every choice of roast possible, I opted for the roast beef after debating it over with the pork. I did cheekily ask the waiter if I could have a tiny slice of pork with my beef to settle both cravings and to my surprise he delivered. The beef was lovely but perhaps a little too much sinew for my liking and the pork was just perfect and I had meal envy right there on my own plate. Opting for the two courses for 26 quid, (yes, it's a fancy roast place) we all chose a main meal and a dessert. After spotting a Knickerbocker Glory that a kid was having on an opposite table, a few of us decided that we must have that for dessert and while not appearing on our menus, the waiter handed over the Young Diner's menu where Knickerbocker Glory featured. Ahh, there is no shame ordering from a children's menu when ordering in numbers, is there? It was mighty tasty and a fine afternoon. read more

I have been here once for breakfast and really enjoyed it. It the usual suspects on the menu but don't expect the greasy spoon mountain of food for £3 this is more of a 'posh' breakfast. I went for the works which I think is called 'the full roast' its was yummy, good quality sausages and bacon and eggs cooked how you like them. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and they were in no rush to get rid of us even though we had been there over two hours! I think breakfast was around £8 and that did not include the drinks (tea, juice etc) so its more of a treat than a regular haunt. I have been back a few times for lunch, looked at the menu and walked away...fish and chips is around £20, I mean it would have to be some seriously out of this world fish and chips for that price...and maybe it is? I have never felt rich enough to try, expecially when the fish place in the market does lovely fish and chips for less than half that on a Friday....Maybe I will get a win on the lottery and I will go eat their lunch and let you know :-) If you want a nice brekkie though, def try this place read more

I visited Roast for lunch a few days before Xmas so the atmosphere at Borough Market was buzzing. Great seat looking down across the Market. The menu here is great, as long as you are a meat lover and not afraid of a few terms such as "bone marrow"! I had scotch egg for starter with Picalilly, may sound a bit dull but it was delicious. For main I opted for the famous pork belly with mash and apple sauce. The piece of pork was enormous but delicious, the crackling was perfectly crisp and the meat tender. Perfect. I was too full for dessert which was dissapointing as they have a great cheese menu, sourced from Neils Yard but I did manage a glass of port, it was Xmas afterall. Great, friendly service, great atmosphere and great food. A bit pricey so not a restaurant for regular dining but great for a treat! read more
