Wow, I went there because of all the great reviews. Well, either it was a very OFF night, or people just don't expect quality in Italian food any more, and have become used to very bad representations of it.
So, based on the reviews and because we're dying to have a neighborhood "go-to" place, I went to Roberto's for lunch one day last week. The slice and salad were great. We then ordered a pizza one night for pick up, and that was ready the moment I walked through their doors, took it home, and it was fine.
Tonight, we girls went to try the food at Roberto's. We ordered sodas first, and they were delivered flat. When we brought it to the server's attention, she simply shrugged and moved on. No replacements or alternatives were offered. The side salads were delivered to us 30 minutes after ordering. They were skimpy - certainly not the side salad I had received the day I stopped in for a slice. We then sat with no refills the entire time, and no plates cleared for over an hour. We watched many takeout orders leave, other pizzas being made and served, people coming and going, yet nothing for us. The people at the only other occupied table finished and left, and we were the only ones seated and waiting to dine the rest of the time.
After one hour and fifteen minutes, we finally asked where our food was, and the owner barked, "We're busy here!" So, they were busy filling pizza and takeout orders for an hour and a half, and ignored the six of us at a table in their dining room. Each time we asked for something, they went and did something else. So, with almost an hour and a half in, they BEGAN making our food - one dish at a time. When we said that it had gotten late, and we would like to pay for our sodas and salads and simply leave, they insisted we stay and said that our food was all ready. OK, we sat back down. They brought out ONE dish (Caprese salad) and nothing else. Every five minutes they brought out another dish. Almost every one was wrong. The simplest item, a personal pizza, never got served at all, and one of our guests took it home in a box. She said this morning that it was "just ok, nothing special." To the owner's credit, he didn't charge us for this fiasco.
The Caprese salad was average, and in the middle of ripe, luscious tomato season in New Jersey, the owner managed to find unripe tasteless tomatoes from who knows where to put with the mozzarella. My calamari marinara over penne arrived without the pasta, and served on a flat plate, total quantity about a cup. The calamari was small, a bit too chewy, bitter aftertaste, and the grated cheese was the worst quality I've ever had. Kraft perhaps? The cavatelli with broccoli rabe and sausage arrived, but it was linguine with steamed broccoli rabe on top, and no sausage. The guest who ordered that said it was wrong, flavorless and sent it back. The flounder francaise looked more breaded than francaise, but the guest said it was ok. However, her side of pasta came out 30 minutes before the entree it was supposed to accompany.
The server was terrible, to be sure. Each time she came to the table with a dish, she said, "Who ordered this??" But the timing in the kitchen was not her fault, although the owner blamed it directly on her several times, referring to her with,"Sorry for the girl."
