I do love the very very clean meat department and the store in general EXCEPT when they are out of everything advertised! For example, they ran out of the Filet Mignon very quickly and still didn't have their inventory replenished by Tuesday! That's 5 days! I call it DECEPTIVE advertising. Same for their "To Go" department that advertised Italian Wedding soup 2 days in a row and apparently never even made the stuff. Do they do this just to get you in the store and buy something you really didn't want?? Again, DECEPTIVE advertising. Just got the sad news (5-17-2025) that Roberts Food Center in Madison, CT. is closing next week. I've gone there for groceries ever since it opened over 40 years ago. The staff was EXCELLENT as was the quality of everything that they sold. It is disconcerting to see another independently-owned business disappear. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. When we arrived it was packed yet we were seen right away and told where the next barcode seat was com no availiable. We were greeted and orders taken immediately never forgotten . The staff was young and amazing everyone of them buzzing along with a great attitude. Will definitely be back . Roberts is my total go to for just about anything. But I will only buy my meats at Roberts. Their prices on their beef, whether it's rib eye bone in or not, filet mignon, short rib, skirt steak, and even sandwich steak are so affordable out of even the bigger names stores in the area. Their pork tenderloin is delicious and fresh. We bought shrimp there out of the seafood case and it was the best in the area! Roberts in a rush as they call it for their daily take out is great and convenient and affordable. I can't say I'd do weekly grocery shopping there only because that I do else where but will always go back to Roberts for my meats, lunch meats, and other quick necessities! read more

Literally downloaded this app because I believe others should know. I would still drive 20 minutes out of the way to shop somewhere, anywhere else. Called for my schedule, and the manager put the phone down without putting the phone on hold to put me down to the staff around them while they "checked" for me. Besides always being threatened with losing my job if something wasn't cleaned just so, the work atmosphere is horrible with managers openly dating employees and flaunting their obvious favoritism. There is no HR, and if there is, they're not on your side nor do they care. After calling that night before Easter, I quit and have never been back and never plan to. read more

Ahh Roberts...what can I say, me and my husband have been life long customers of this establishment, and let's just say it's our shining star of Madison. Always fresh produce, meats, don't get me started on the prepared food...they have this sweet Asian women that goes above and beyond at preparing our dinner meals. This store is truly one of a kind. Their in store owner goes above and beyond at certain requests, customer service is clearly a priority here. I however do miss one of the cart returners from maybe 2 years ago that through rain/sleet/snow always maintained a smile on his face...loved it!! This store is nestled in between rt 79 and 80 and my husband and I have always looked at it as the separation between central ct and coastal parts. Did a necessities run last night, and we got there 10-minutes before closing. The store was kept well stocked and clean. They have a deli section where you create your own sandwiches, and it looks like hot sandwiches as well? The employees are friendly and helpful. I was warned before applying and should have listened, but I learned firsthand. Fear-based leadership. Do not apply for a job here. The work environment is terrible subsequently employees do not want to come to work. I feel terrible for the employees there since they are genuinely nice people who just need a job, but they are overworked and underpaid. Owners and managers treat employees awful with a lot of demeaning and yelling, they are never appreciative of a job well done. Looks are deceiving. Make sure you read all expiration dates on the food before purchasing. Sale prices are frequently wrong. The only hope for this store is If it were under new owners and management, the place would have a chance of being a valuable resource for the community. In addition, please let me put the question to rest that was asked or commented on by patrons: 'Why is it so cold in here?' .... because they refuse to fix the furnace. Roberts is the only grocery store in the area, so if you don't want to drive to a better supermarket or just need milk, Roberts is OK. It's clean and well lit. But it's VERY EXPENSIVE compared to other supermarkets in the area. And worse, they have a poor selection of items. I couldn't even get an ordinary loaf of white bread!! I can not say enough positive things about this market! When I Stop to Shop at the other town grocer, I'm usually in a full rage from the indignity they bestow on their customers. I'm pretty sure half of their customer service policies violate the Geneva Convention. Roberts's cares and it shows! The store is clean, the food is fresh and often locally sourced and their prices are on par with the chains. The customer service is beyond! They will bring in products at your request which addresses their only downfall, limited selection . The employees are helpful and kind. My last trip, I forgot a couple of my reusable bags in the car. The bag boy unloaded my cart and the cashier rang items up while I ran to the car for the bags. This was the cashier's suggestion! It was not only the most stress free shopping experience I've had in years, I left happy! Hats off to Roberts's Food Center!! read more

This review is just about the service and not about the food. The service from the staff at the cash registers and the service desk is exceptional. They have hired very friendly cashiers baggers. However, the staff behind the deli, meat, seafood, and prepared food counters are just not in tune with their customers. I've been going to this store for years, and usually all I see is someone retreating into the back door away from the counter, or their head is down never looking up, or their backs turned to me. Yes, I get it they need to prepare the food to have it ready for customers, but I could stand there for 5 minutes and no one helps. It's been like this for a long time. I was not impressed with Roberts. Madison is a really nice town, I expected a really nice grocery store. Instead, this grocery store has extremely small selections that are grossly overpriced! I will give them credit that their meat department was beautiful. The steaks here were some of the best I've ever seen. The rest of the store had small aisles that were difficult to walk down when people were in them. There were also quite a few employees stocking shelfs of chatting in the aisles, making it even more difficult to shop. For a box of crackers, some cheese, and a Rockstar it cost me almost $12.00! The Rockstar itself was over $2.00, I've never seen a Rockstar cost so much! Half of the things I picked up were so expensive that I refused to buy them but I needed something for lunch and I had only a short lunch break. I won't make the mistake of coming to this store for my lunch break again. I'm very surprised and disappointed to see such a crummy grocery store in such a wonderful town! ***update 11/26/17*** I tried the sandwiches here. They set up a counter to order sandwiches but I found some issues. The lids over the ingredients are metal so even when raised up, customers can not see the state of the veggies and meat before it goes on the sandwiches. The bread used is acceptable but not excellent. I asked specifically for dill pickles and received sweet pickles which I had to remove from my sandwich. The lettuce was barely green and icky. I have shopped at Roberts in the past and really like the store as it is clean and plentiful BUT the main reason I will now be a regular shopper is because of the man in the prepared foods section named JAMIE! He has gone out of his way to help me with suggestions. The good in his section is consistently fresh and different! Been living here for 15 years and Robert's, for a smaller grocery store, is clean, has excellent meats, great selection for and prepared foods (sushi, sandwiches, dinners, etc.) that are outstanding. First and foremost, these negative reviews about 'service' and 'ritzy' Madison...what do you think you're eating at Daniel? Shopping at Dean & DeLuca? In 15 years I think I've waited maybe 3 minutes during Xmas in line. Their service is second to none and if they see one line forming, they open the next register immediately. Stop and Shop in Madison I've spent 20 minutes in line when it's not even that crowded..with only 3 registers open. I wouldn't run here for seafood or crazy Italian selections in the deli, but that's what Atlantic and Lino's are for. Another thing I've read are prices. Really? Go to Big Y and do the math on the BOGO or get 4 free...you're being scammed. Buy one Nathan's dogs get one free and you find out the one you paid for is 8 bucks. Stop and Shop is simply more expensive. Personally I like either Robert's or Shop Rite...worth the trip. Robert's is a great medium-sized grocery store and as far as IGA's goes, nothing comes close. If you want ritzy, shop at Fromage. Amazing foods and cheeses, but you'll spend 100 bucks on cheese alone. Add sopressata, prosciutto, some lardo and a few bastognes and you're out 200 easy. Just don't compare it to Robert's. Like apples and artichokes. read more

Roberts Food Center is located en route to Hamonasset Beach. My friends and I stopped there to load up some food for the beach because it is healthier and cheaper than the beach food stands. Roberts is really a cute place to shop. It is an IGA store. We got some wraps, rice crackers, Gatorade, bananas, and cut up watermelon pieces; perfect for the beach. My parents in Guilford will shop there on occasion. They like the meat department. read more

Robert's is a family-owned IGA market around the corner from my house. I go there almost every day to get items for dinner and once every couple of weeks to stock up on sale items so I know the store like the back of my hand. BAKERY - They have a decent selection of bagels, muffins and artisan type breads. DELI - They have absolutely delicious tuna salad, ham salad, and egg salad (that they make in the store). They have a HUGE variety of cheeses and assorted packaged Italian meats (salami, prosciutto, etc.). They also have pre-made guacamole, spinach dip, etc for last minute guests or weekend nights spent at home. MEATS - They have a great meat selection and they will cut meat to order if you call them up. They have terrific sales too if you watch the flyers. They make their own sausages and have a great selection of stuffed pork chops etc. to take home and cook if you forgot to defrost something. GROCERY/FROZEN - Great selection of things you can't find elsewhere (JJ Flats crackers - wish they had sesame more often). They are the last place around here that still carries frozen Mystic Pizza, which is my son's favorite. So, I can say (from the mouth of a very picky eater), head on up to Robert's. All in all...a pretty decent store. Looks clean, large selection like a mini stop n shop, great meat and seafood selection, average prices for a mom n pop supermarket, and a really good hot n cold sandwich dinner area w/ a pretty large selection of sandwiches, meatloaf, potatoes, mac n cheese, etc. While I was there, I had a turkey n cheese panini...very good. The only reason why I didn't go 5 stars was that most of the workers look pretty miserable, and aren't that eager to help when asking a question..kinda like your bothering them. They never remove their expired products from the shelf! Disgusting. I have purchased products 5 separate times that are grossly outdated. Boursin cheese, milk, yogurt, buttermilk, and now just today Kates Organic Butter. The butter was outdated (2 of them ) by 4 and 2 months. There were black spots all through the butter. When I inquired about their policy of removing shelf items, a man who seemed to be the head of inventory told me "I track items when they are returned". Not sure what that means. He did not hear what I had to say just took the butter back and disappeared, leaving the young manager to apologize - though it was not her fault. So...only shop there if you are really good at remembering to check the expiration of everything. Apparently, removing outdated merchandise is not done ever!! Check EVERY price as it is rung up. There is a chronic "problem" with things ringing up at the regular and not the advertised price. The consumer protection laws in Connecticut state if the wrong price rings up and the item is under 20 dollars, you get the item free. BEWARE! They refused to honor the law in my case . read more

Simply not going to patron this store anymore. Staff has no interest in helping, they simply don't know what good customer service looks ike. Don't blame the people, blame the leadership. Three time in the last year we have had to retum products because they were either spoiled, rotten, or opened. The meat is as good as folks say it is, probably some of the best in the area, but the diary products are questionable and the eggs are always cracked. We want to support them because they are super close to our house and local, but we have reached the breaking point. Changing to Big Y...which is much further away. In my review of Stop & Shop I mentioned we are blessed and cursed for living in Madison. Blessings are the town, parks and beaches, and the curses are the supermarkets - both Roberts and Stop & Shop. One thing I will give Roberts props for is the meat selection and quality. Other than that, plan on taking out a personal loan at your local bank to pay for shopping at this place. The worst pricing I have ever seen in Connecticut and this includes Whole Foods. The only reason I can think of which explains how Roberts gets away with this robbery is location = North Madison, closest market 8 or so miles downtown to Stop & Shop. I have seen orange juice pricing at $6, and this is for a non organic 59 ounce national brand. Or ice cream for $6-8 = yikes! Most of the pricing at Roberts is ridiculous unless you find a sales price which brings their prices back to earth or back to starting price at other supermarkets. Roberts also gets the award for worst frozen section and worst ice cream selection and pricing. The reason I have gone to Roberts is more like desperation, as in need something fast. Luckily those times have been few and far between, and if I never go back my life will be happier with a little more pocket change. Roberts is on my "Do not ever visit" list. read more

Please check every produce price at checkout--6 times I have been there and caught them not charging me the sales price for produce. Once I bought eggplants and thought the price was really high and when I scrutinized the receipt at home I realized they charged me the non-sale price for the eggplants, which was over a dollar more per pound. Three different times my husband and I have gone there and purchased tomatoes and they didn't ring up the sale price, they rang up a higher price by $.50/lb. I pointed it out every time and it is embarrassing cause I am holding up the line while the cashier has to go back and check the price and then fix their mistake. Another time I bought a Romaine Lettuce head that was marked on sale for $1.99 but it rang up at the register as $2.99--I told the cashier and we had to go through the whole rigamarole of her going back and checking and confirming the sale price, which holds up the line and wastes time. Today I went in and bought cucumbers that were advertised as on sale for $3.98, but at checkout they rang up as $4.98. When I complained and told them that I think they have a systemic problem of overcharging for produce, the manager said "well, we do the best we can do," which I disagree with I think they can do better. I have indeed complained to the cashier's and twice to manager's about the overcharging, and they say they will fix this issue, but it keeps happening! I don't believe anymore that these are just honest mistakes, I think this is general practice at this store. Today was the last straw I will never be shopping at Robert's again. read more

Every time I have been here (and it's been more than once) the service has been horrible, deli clerks rude and dishonest and prices are extremely high. Be warned when purchasing ANYTHING from the deli as they will not charge you correctly. There are times I don't mind paying a little bit more for the premium deli meats instead of the cheap stuff that goes bad quickly, but when they grab the cheap stuff and try to pass it off as the premium really angers me. I have called them out on this twice during 1 trip and the clerk was extremely rude when I called her out on it. Don't try passing off lower priced items for higher priced items because your too lazy to walk in the back to get the right item. Also the pre-made salads are not worth the cost ($10 for a small container of pasta salad? Really?). The cashiers are just as rude. The only sad part is, when you live near Roberts, that means you are not close to other stores and if you don't feel like driving 20 or so mintues to another store, your stuck with this as your only option. read more
