Yesterday I had a taste for oxtails and hadn't been here in awhile. Welp, I was highly disappointed with the oxtails that had not a hint of oxtails seasoning! The juices/gravy was that of a flavored gravy for mashed potatoes or a smothered meat like pork chops or chicken! I've eaten here several times and the food is always fresh and tasty. I got a veggie plate today - turnips, rice , cornbread , and yams. As I dined in I noticed the dining area could be better maintained. I understand this was an old Hardee's so this would explain the seating and the hot bar area. The staff is friendly and quick with your order. ***UPDATE*** I decided to stop in a couple of days ago had a taste for fried wings. Walked in looked around 4 customers eating in. Looked over the food and several items were low especially chicken. It didn't look fresh but she assured me it was cooked that morning. So I got 3 fried wings, black eye peas, and rice. I looked around for the score but it was not posted or maybe I just didn't see it. I asked if Mr. Robert was in. I was told he passed away 3yrs ago! I was shocked but like I said it has been awhile since I was here. Now to the food- the wings were fried hard or possibly been under the light too long. Not seasoned well but ok. I've had better unknown if there are new cooks or new management. Peas were not seasoned well but ok. Rice is rice it was not sticky or gummy. The dining area needs extensive work. Brown ceiling from old water stains. Roof is needed as it was an old Hardee's. New buffet needed. Exterior needs work ..... Hungry for lunch, and got off at the highway, resigned to eat at a chain restaurant when assigned that simply says "soul food, pork chop plus mac & cheese". I was in... Quick service walk up counter with home, cooked meat and vegetable options. Got the fried pork chop, cabbage, and rice and gravy. Topped it off with a peach punch to drink. Our first time there, and our last time there. The restaurant rating was 100 but I found that unbelievable. The place was downright dirty. The ceiling tiles missing and stained. Holes in the ceiling The ceiling fans were caked with dirt and dust. Some of the furniture was in disrepair. That's just the condition of the restaurant. They sold me neckbones instead of oxtails for over $25, a plate. Hubby's fish was terribly overcooked. We returned everything for a full refund. Dear Robert's Soul Food Restaurant, I have lived in the area for 10 years. I've been eager to try you, as you are the closest soul food restaurant in proximity to my house. I would pass by and your establishment was always closed during the stated business hours. Today, leaving the mall, I noticed you were finally open, so I took my shot. I attempted to order a fish plate, a 3 wing plate, and a dark meat chicken plate, through the drive thru. I was informed you were out of many items: sweet potatoes, banana pudding, and corn. Plus, you don't even carry fried okra. I was then told that in order to order fish, I'd have to come inside. A soul food spot is only as good as its fried chicken & mac & cheese.... Now, what is this? I had on sunglasses and thought maybe my eyes were deceiving me... but I had already paid... I knew it was about to be bad when an older woman walked in after me (as I was waiting on my fish plate).. and asked: is this all the macaroni and cheese yall got? But I wasn't gonna make a fuss. I get home to see this mess. I didn't even feel comfortable to eat the other sides. I made my own mashed potatoes & corn. SMH.‍ The chicken wings were just okay 5/10, and the whiting was 7/10. I have been curious about this place for well over 15 years. However, it always looks closed. Decided to come today after a friend telling me her mom likes this place. She said the fried fish they had was salty as all hell, somewhat burnt, and tasted like it was fried in old grease. She also said they didn't get all the wings they ordered, but the black eye peas were really good. When I stopped in, there were a few people inside and a few more people came in while I was there waiting for my food. Their massive fried and smothered pork chops, fried pork chop sandwich, and fried whole wings seem to be very popular. I also heard several people ask if they had neck bones available and when will they be making them again. However, they had other meat options available. They had very limited sides. I'm guessing that the meats and sides vary from day to day. I had the salisbury steak with mac & cheese and dressing. The salisbury steak/ gravy actually tasted very good and had good flavor despite not having an onion or pepper in sight. The mac & cheese was good as well. It tasted like that old school, church mother mac & cheese. However, it was a little salty, baked to death and dry. The cheese on top was hard and stiff, it was crumbling and you could see the curdled eggs from it being overcooked. The dressing on the other hand...total fail!!! I had to drown it in gravy to try and make it palatable, but I just couldn't eat it after a while. Also, they offered no cranberry sauce to go with the dressing. I must have cranberry sauce with dressing and gravy, but this is a personal preference. I like that they offered rolls as another option to cornbread. I also ordered 1 piece of fried whiting to try. Per other reviews no wonder they got sick so to not following State/Federal sanitary practices (ex: the re-use of disposable one time use pans). However, the worst is Owners/Management. They have the best tasting soul food in this area. I've tried the fried catfish, fried chicken, and fried talapia. All were good. The mac and cheese is a little over cooked but I can work with it. The collards and cabbage are pretty good as well. The customer service is weird; sometimes they run out of things (like sides). So, it's best to call ahead and place a phone order. This restaurant has the best chicken wings that I've tasted in the entire Atlanta area. In fact, I sometimes go there now to order nothing but wings ! Their smothered pork chops are also delicious.
