The whole order in advance thing is a failure. A farm should harvest what they have and then sell it to the CSA members or the public. The whole idea of ordering in advance and picking up doesn't work. They never have what you order, and often times there are other products available that were not listed on the website. Those are for "loyal members" who have been around longer. What? Is this a farm or a social club. Leafy products: yes I understand it's an organic farm and bugs will come through here or there. But we routinely expect to find leafy products INFESTED with bugs and dirt. A certain amount of dirt is healthy in vegetables and chlorinated water is bad for vegetables, but this is bad. The least they could do is rinse the stuff off a bit as other farms do. Other farms have water tanks where they soak the vegetables off a bit. No such luxuries here. The CSA membership gives you no real discount on produce. You buy in at face value, versus Cherry Grove Organic where $400 buys you $500. I wanted to try Honey Brook but We will head quickly back to Cherry Grove next year.

During this 2021 season, most of the array of vegetables were only offered to people who chose the largest plans. We would go to pick up the produce each week and see that our share size was excluded from ordering the majority of the produce. This huge change from prior years ,was not told to us before they asked for our $$ in advance.In past years, there were many many pick -your -own options that were included in the price of a share. Again, we were not told in advance of the full season payment, that there would be hardly any vegetables for picking. That is a huge change from prior years and yet it was not disclosed before the fact. The big changes this year, can not be blamed on them outsourcing/trying software to track inventory etc.. Nondisclosure of changes ahead of time so consumers would know what they were/ were not buying, in our opinion, is the reason for our poor rating.

I have an individual farm share at Katona's neighbor, Honey Brook Organic Farm and I retrieve my produce (and pick my berries and flowers) on Thursdays. So, I've been passing Katona for the last 3 months, telling myself each time I should stop in. Honey Brook planted corn this year, as an add-on crop, so you can purchase some each week for an additional fee (members otherwise pay in advance for the rest of the produce for the whole season), but I've been put off by the price - $1 an ear. This is my only complaint about Honey Brook - and it's minor. I did try two ears of their organic corn last week, and it was, like everything else grown there, amazing. But we are at the height of New Jersey's corn season; and I am in corn country. I knew I could do at least just as well, cornwise, elsewhere. I like organic food, and philosophically, prefer it, but I can't always justify it financially. Maybe that's shortsighted of me - I am a big fan of bees, and the earth's other little critters that suffer under non-organic practices. But now the corn is already grown AND ISN'T GOING TO EAT ITSELF! So I stopped in at Katona. They've got a NJ Preserved Farm designation, so even though they're not organic, at least they're not condos now. Or a freakin' golf course. Or a parking lot. Or strip mall. The market is way in the back, behind some buildings. It isn't hard to find, but I had that "where the heck is this place?" feeling the whole time I was driving around back there. The staff was very nice. Despite the sign, "Corn: $5 a dozen," they told me it was $4 a dozen today, and they'd give me a baker's dozen -- and, as it turns out, a baker's half dozen, if I wanted less corn. So I got 7 ears of corn for $2. I haven't had a proper NJ tomato all season, and saw that Katona had some, so I grabbed 3 medium-sized babies. And a cucumber. With the corn, the whole bag of produce was $3.50. My farm share included 2 melons, a pile of potatoes, and a bunch of very large beets, in addition to flowers, and herbs. So between that, my work bag, and, oh, the two loaves of bread I picked up at the local IPB (BOGO day today), and Katona's produce, I had a hell of a time unloading my car tonight! But I ate really well, Katona providing the bulk of the meal. The corn was every bit as good as the organic stuff down the street, and the bonus was that I had a tomato to go with it. I ripped up a couple of basil leaves and threw them on top. That first bite of tomato was eyes-rolled-back-in-my-head joy. Pure joy. How I've missed you Jersey tomatoes! I roasted my Honey Brook zucchini in rounds, after brushing them with pesto, and topping them with just a little bit of Romano and mozzarella. I may never eat zucchini any other way. While my experience at IPB was not quite stellar, the bread was such a nice addition to the meal. I just finished it off with a glass of cabernet. It is summer, and I am happy.

Our kids had an absolute blast picking fresh strawberries, meeting the animals, and riding on the tractor, which ended up being one of the highlights of the day! The market was another pleasant surprise, full of fun snacks, treats, and unique items to browse. This place offers so much more than just fruit picking. Once in a while I would get something that was not as fresh, but it was very rare. Philly Foodworks is unique among csa-type distributors because they have a full online grocery store you can shop from, whether you're getting a produce box or not. I was able to get almost all of my groceries each week from Philly Foodworks with their numerous options. If you shop around, you can find really affordable items as well. Subscriptions for eggs, dairy, and meat offer further discounts. In general, I ended up spending as much, or a tad less, than I would for the same items from an actual grocery store. I only ever shopped online, but I believe they also have a store front you can go to if that option is better for you. They deliver right to your doorstep for a small fee and the actual process of getting groceries/subscriptions was always a breeze. The quality of the food cannot be overstated. Once you go direct from the farm, it's hard to go back to the tasteless big-box grocery store produce. The eggs and milk were also amazing, as was the beef. Last but not least, they're a great organization with increasing access, sustainability, and regenerative farming practices at the root of everything they do.

This was huge for me during the cucumber and tomato's recalls two summers ago as I was pregnant and would only eat produce from Phillyfoodworks. Living Hope CSA is great because they have a close drop off location to my house, and I like supporting local farms which provide us weekly fresh organic produce free of fertilizers and pesticides. The vegetables (and fruit such as tomatoes) are DELICIOUS, but I think other CSAs give more produce each week. (We compared what we got to what our friends get from other CSAs that also do 6 items for a small share.) At one point during the summer, Living Hope CSA did email all its members to say sorry about the quality of vegetables since the weather has been hot, but I think it would have been nice if they offered credit back or a discount for future farm shares. One thing I like about this CSA is that you can pick from a list of what you will be receiving each week. (The other CSA I am comparing to does not let you pick each week.) Unfortunately, by giving the option of choice, sometimes they run out of the popular items and you get a random item instead. That's okay, but sometimes you will receive out of season vegetables. For example, I received potatoes in the middle of summer (tiny potatoes in a tiny portion). I did order potatoes later in the fall though, and they were great. Save the cool season vegetables for the cool season!

It is truly a wonderful place, though I won't be back this year having to work and spend too much time in Philly. One day I will be back though.
