A few things to note: the sun sets at 9:15 so it doesn't get dark till like 10:30 and they don't have blinds on the patio door so it's bright in the room. Sun rises at 5am. Wish they had black out curtains on the door. All the outside noise can be heard inside (ie the drunk boomers walking back from dinner at 11pm and the leaf blower at 7am) Other than those 2 things the room was great. Nice and clean, modern. Bed and pillows were comfy. Pack and play for toddler was way too hard so we had to stuff it with towels to make a softer surface for her to sleep. Cute fireplace. Nice balcony. We were so glad we were able to get a reservation. This place is always booked up, and now I know why. It was such a beautiful tranquil place. Everything is quiet, and peaceful. Plenty of outdoor activities, boats, bikes, hikes, and plenty to do near by on the island. -Rooms were beautiful, bed was tall, bed was big, but bed made noise (iykyk) - Bathroom was clean, spacious, and was well lit. -Closet and amenities were on point. Robes, cups, steamer, lantern, and coffee. But no tv or mini fridge. They had plenty of golf carts to get you around the town. read more

I got married here 21 years ago and wanted to come back for our wedding anniversary to celebrate and retake our photos. The resort was incredibly accommodating about it and even drove us from our condo to the hotel in our attire and back again for free. They had a steamer we could also use and our cleaning service each day was amazing. All the staff really care and are so friendly. Being able to get groceries right on property and cook was great and I really enjoyed the cafe stand too. I wish the restaurants had more fresh seafood options that weren't fried fish but that's about the only thing I'd change. read more

Oh my goodness, I have only but nice things to say about this venue, location, and staff. If I had one word to describe our time with Roche Harbor, I would say blissful. They really help with your vision and I never felt anxious when working with them (and we all know how wedding planning goes). Every time I had a moment where I felt like I could've panicked, Roche's staff stepped up to the plate multiple times. They really want you to feel at ease and they damn sure do a good job of it. They even make sure you eat when you're running around trying to greet all your guests! We had a pop-up tattoo artist cancel day of, last minute. Within an hour, Roche had a plan and connections. We were able to still have our wedding pop-up tattoo event with two traveling tattoo artists' that used to work at Roche, it all came together so perfectly! If you're looking for tattoo artists who are not only skilled but also a blast to be around, look no further than Shay and Sean. They saved the day for us, and we can't recommend them highly enough! The golf carts they have on site were a nice touch as well! Made sticking to the timeline/schedule so much easier. You will not regret booking here, it was the most magical weekend we could ask for. So, we just got back from Roche Harbor Resort. We rented two cabins over three nights. The cabins are clean, spacious and airy with all the basic amenities. THe campfire pits add a nice touch at the end of a day's activities. We had several activities planned but had to cut those in half because we were so tired from our lack of a proper sleep on the plywood mattresses they call beds. My husband and i tossed and turned and took turns sitting upright on the sofa to get some relief. My son and his gf's beds were not any better in their cabin. In fact, my son had to cancel his half of a planned couples massage because of a crick in his neck due to the uncomfortable (super hard) mattress. He still had to argue for a refund on the cancelled massage! We were tired, irritable and not motivated to do all we had planned while on the island simply because we were so worn out from lack of a good night's rest due to these horrible beds. Oh, and the beds are very high! We are a tall family and still felt we needed a step stool getting on and off the beds; we had to watch our aching backs very closely in just getting up and laying down again so as not to trigger a crick. Nice cabins, horrible beds! If a good night's sleep is, meh, you can rough it, then you're okay, if not, good luck! And good luck conveying this to the manager; the front desk guy agreed that he'd received many complaints about the beds but the manager swore some folks claimed it was their best sleep ever! read more

At nearly the same latitude as TR's home base of Sagamore Hill, Oyster Bay, Long Island, there sits another island on the opposite coast. Just as Oyster Bay was shaped by one American titan, Roche Harbor and San Juan Island were molded by another, this one a captain of industry, a man who could command grains of sand, turning them into a kind of stone upon which our civilization was constructed. John S. McMillin was a concrete magnate who was fond of telling people how he and his millions (not his workers) rebuilt San Francisco after the great quake of 1906. He paid his employees in company scrip and stripped the island of most of its trees. Black and white photos throughout the resort show the still-standing resort buildings against a barren, rocky island backdrop almost totally void of trees. The trees were needed to keep the lime kilns going to make cement. In 1906, McMillin's friend Theodore Roosevelt came for a visit to Roche Harbor. McMillin showed off for him by throwing a fancy ball and feeding him many large, dead fishes in his honor. The Colonel upstaged him however, by bringing not just his demiurge aura, but also a U.S. Navy battleship. Oh, to be a fly on the wall at THAT party! TR left an echo of his presence by signing the Roche Harbor guestbook. Another signature was stolen in the 70's, so what remains is under glass but still viewable to guests checking in. His friend the Lord of Concrete left an echo of his presence in the form of a sepulcher modeled on his vision of Greco-Roman temple design and sporting masonic symbolism. In the middle of the large columns there sits a giant round table and several chair. Under each chair lies the remains of McMillin, his children and their nanny. One has no trouble imagining pagan ritual sacrifice happening here along with teenage drinking. If a sandal-clad, white-robed oracle stepped out from under here, that wouldn't seem far-fetched either. Now the trees have grown back. From the deck of our rental, we watched a pileated woodpecker and a great blue heron frolic. We also saw something else TR might have approved of: the nightly Roche Harbor striking of the colors at sunset, where the Canadian flag, the Stars and Stripes and the British Union Flag (...which is only called the "Union Jack" when it flies at sea) all to snippets of their respective national anthems blasting through a PA system, accompanied by marching and drilling on a parade ground. After the American flag is folded, the ceremony is concluded with a live canon salute. When we viewed the ceremony up close, the canon failed to ignite and the color guards were warned to "keep your faces away from the bore!" As the crowd dispersed like fragments of shadow in the descending twilight, a resounding explosion echoed across the still waters. After a pregnant pause, laughter and applause followed, not screams and sirens, so we assumed everyone went home that night with heads still affixed to shoulders. It is said that TR's ghost roams freely here, seen especially on warm, breezy summer nights, or whenever there is an outdoor buffet. It is said that he is looking for the last piece of salmon, but that if you leave a mint julep out (or "The Return of TR" a fancy drink sold at the resort), his shade will be satisfied, and return to sea on the deck of a triumphant, spectral USS Maine, risen again from the depths once again, to patrol the lonely seas beside Roche Harbor. As for McMillin, he sits at his designated chair at the family table of his temple, his shadow visible beneath the visage of the full moon... They say his ghost frantically tries to repair the cracks in his concrete temple, but although he was adept in using masonic symbols, he was not as good with their tools, and so one often sees hard-cover, well-worn copies of Time Life's DIY Sepulcher Repair series laying open wherever McMillin's shade has been toodling about. read more

We stayed from a Tuesday-Friday as we had our destination wedding on the resort. The location and resort speak for itself. It is stunning. We and our 70 guests could not say enough wonderful things about the experience. We had people fly in from all over the country and most made it a point to let know that everything was amazing-from the resort food, views, rooms, location and one of- if not the best- weddings they ever attended. The customer service is above and beyond. We cannot express our gratitude enough for the Roche Harbor Weddings and Events team-Ashley, Stina, Cilena, and Laura. These women are amazing and really go above and beyond to make your day (in our case -weekend) an incredible experience. It was the little touches provided that made the greatest impact. The follow up from start to finish and after our wedding was met with urgency and care. The team works with empathy and seem to truly love what they do. A last shoutout to our bartenders-Krissy and Nic. They were the most personable, fun people to have working for our day. They made us and our guests feel at home and we were so grateful for them. Not a friendly place at all. We did not leave garbage or drive crazy, just a middle aged normal couple that simply keep to themselves. Visited there during a road trip. Got "informed" about the time limit for certain parking spaces, moved the car way before the expiration of that and then hassled at the space we moved to by a lot attendant for why we were there. Wife visited a gift shop, bought several items and was followed out of the store and scrutinized for shoplifting which did not occur. Management doesn't know what apology is. read more

We enjoyed our second stay at the Roche Harbor Marina, and first stay aboard our own boat. Booking was easy, as was arrival and direction to our slip. We were greeted by a friendly dock hand upon arrival and had a great spot with a view of the chapel. We enjoyed the many ammenities such as the pool, grocery store, and showers. We came prepared with quarters for the $2 shower, but wish they were included with stay. Our only issue was wifi as it was slow and did not work for streaming movies on our smart tv aboard our boat at night. That would have been nice but it was not horrible to unplug for the night. All of the staff on the docks, at the dining establishments and at the stores were very courteous and kind. We especially had great interactions with the staff at the Madrona grill. The food was delicious especially the burger and the stir fried noodles, a treat after cooking on the boat. Lime Kiln Cafe offered nice breakfast and lunch options as well. The colors ceremony at night was a special tradition to watch, and the cannon boom was cool! We lounged at the pool in the afternoon and listened to the church chime songs as we enjoyed happy hour on our boat deck. You can walk to alot of places to sit and enjoy the sunset, play games at the horse shoe/bocce ball court, and shop at several stores with fun souviners. I liked the mini farmers market and ice cream/coffee stand! There is also a wine bar. Next time I want to try the spa. The gardens by the hotel were well maintained, and the hotel, condos and cabins looked like awesome places to stay. This place is definitely special and upholds it's charm and tradition making it a place people return to year after year and we look forward to our next stay. read more

Absolutely fantastic place to stay for a northwest getaway! First, let's talk about how gorgeous Roche Harbor is on its own. This place is a hidden gem that not all bother to make the trek to, and when you are there it will take your breath away. Now on to the resort. There is enough there to keep you entertained without being so much to overwhelm. You definitely get the vibe that you should relax. There are cute shops galore including in the resort lobby. If you want to relax you can hit the spa, or even just lounge on the docks taking in the views. There are activities here from crabbing, hiking, swimming, and more. The carriage houses at the resort are gorgeous, enormous, recently built/renovated and have room for all your friends. We stayed in a 4bed/4bath with several couples and there was tons of room for all! We absolutely love this resort! read more

Overpriced and lacking real customer service. For the amount they charge, I expect good guest service ... None of my interactions with the staff showed that they care about guests at all. The bed was creaky and old. The room was clean enough but they did not service our room after the first night, even though we had the sign along for service on the door all morning and afternoon. Great lunch menu, and dinner as well. Started off with clam chowder (really yummy), I had Petrole Sole for my entree, and my wife had the salmon. You know how most often salmon is tin and dry? Not here. The King Salmon is fatty and delicious m, and the filet is thick. My sole was breaded with Asiago cheese - not sure what the sauce was but wish I did! Almost hate to share this one but it's already so popular. Roche Harbor is absolutely enchanting with its crisp white paint, dreamy church bells, abundant garden, and white lights after dark. It is clean, friendly, efficient, and well kept. Marina staff are very accommodating and helpful while docking. They are all clean cut kids in crisp uniforms and always available to help. The grocery store is small but we'll stocked with fresh produce, a wide selection of cheeses and general needs including books, boating supplies, toys and a small selection of souvenirs. The local spa is very spendy so we skipped it this time. There's a bocce ball court next to the old kilns. Get reservations upstairs at McMillan's and for the love of God, order the Mushrooms en Croute appetizer! The oysters (from Longbeach,WA; Wescotts not available when we dined) we're tiny but fresh fresh fresh. Salads in McMillans were DRENCHED... we didn't love that. The dining room is COLD so bring a sweater. Great food and service. Very clean and modern. read more

Stayed here over the 4th of July for 5 nights. Amazing 4th of July activities at the resort - killer fireworks, rolling log races, fun run, etc. The property grounds are beautiful, has great views, you can rent kayaks right in the harbor, etc. Little market was stocked well with all the necessities, and cute artist shops by the ice cream store. Ate at two of their restaurants (Madrona Grill and Lime Kiln Cafe) and they were both good as well (note - good not great or delicious). I really wanted to love this place. Getting to the big BUT - I was very disappointed in the condo. I stayed in Condo unit 108. Looked nothing like the pictures on their website. The website condo décor looked much nicer. The biggest issues I had with the condo is the carpet was literally disgustingly dirty. Seriously huge stains everywhere. When I mentioned it to the front desk the lady said, "we allow a lot of dogs." She was almost rude about it (I think I got an eye roll). Nevertheless, why is that my problem and why would you be so rude? Aren't you working in hospitality? How about thank you for the feedback and I am sorry the condo had dirty carpets? If you allow dogs, can't you charge extra fees and clean the carpets? I had to wear my shoes inside the condo all the time. Floor was too dirty to walk on without shoes. I do have to say the bed was very comfortable though and had nice linens. Saving grace! At least I got good sleep/rest. Overall property is great, Condo not so great. Especially, since the rate is quit high at almost $400 a night. Also learned that the condos are individually owned (not owned by resort), so it sounds like you get what you get. That was the other attitude I got from the front desk (kind like whateves we don't own those condos). The cleanliness is up to the owner? Not sure if I would stay here again because of the room quality. Filthy floors is deal breaker for me. Stars given because resort itself is lovely (just not the condo). read more

This resort town/port is located at the Northwestern edge of San Juan Island. In the summer, there are plenty of tourists and all the hotels operating at full capacity. There are many yachts, boutique shops, and fine dining restaurants here. There is also a medium-sized grocery store providing the essentials. Nearby, there is a small sea-plane airport, a sculpture garden, and hiking trails. The drive to this place from Friday Harbor is about 20 minutes. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. I think that most of it is awesome and I see where they can improve with little to know investment but they just won't do it. The EV station area is an absolute mess. It's at the end of the parking lot. You won't be able to keep an eye on your car. Half of the spots are blocked by Teslas that never move. I'm assuming they are long term parking by someone on a boat. They need more signage and a way to keep the spots open for customers. The updated rooms at the Quarryman Hall are ok but have issues. They have 4 doors that you can use enter the building. All but 1 of them lock at night. It's a total false sense of security. The 1st floor door doesn't have an electronic lock pad so it's never locked. I think the rooms are very overpriced. I think that's probably my last trip to this specific location. I'll stay at other places on the island in the future. read more

Doesn't look like much when you're walking by.... Jokes. This place looks as good as it is when walking by. It's history is center piece when talking about the San Juan islands. It's hard to access to once you make it across the water ways it's hard to leave. This year they threw float fest which was new and cool. O M G That was my first thought upon descending the road into Roche Harbor and feasting my eyes upon its historical beauty. My next thought was, wow, I can't believe I live so close to here and have never visited before! It is seriously, truly, a beautiful, amazing, classic Pacific Northwest spot, and I felt lucky to have the privilege to spend a weekend there as "shore crew" for a friend's sailing team. We were lodged in the condos overlooking the harbor and marina, and I was super impressed with what I found when I opened the door to #105. It was very clean, and so well-appointed I was left wanting for nothing as I spent the weekend cooking and baking for the team. The accommodations were comfortable, too - there were five of us sleeping in the condo and it was surprisingly roomy (having two bathrooms was a big plus). There was also a fireplace where we burned the provided candles, and a big covered deck where we could take in the view. It was also fun exploring the historic buildings of the resort. When checking out I was offered the chance to tour some of the guest rooms of the main hotel. They were beautiful but the building is definitely old (as in sagging floors and creaky stairwells). I would definitely pick the condos again if I return! read more

Gorgeous historical grounds and amenities = a wonderful stay for hubby and me. Check out their website - very informative. Calling to reserve a room is super easy and they actually ANSWER THE PHONE. (Wish other companies would follow suit...) I loved walking around the property and checking out the plaques with pictures from 1800-1940. So cool. There are plenty of food options on the property - from a grocery store to a cafe to casual to fine dining. Loved that!! Zip San Juan (the company that takes you zip lining) picks you up directly from the resort which is sweet, but make sure to call as far in advance as possible as they fill up quickly! -1 star because I felt it was a tad expensive, our maid did not get to our room and for this price I'd like a gym option. Running isn't really possible as it's so hilly and there isn't a path next to the small, curvy driving roads. But we will DEFINITELY be back next time we're at Friday Harbor!! read more

This is a great marina and resort. We were there for a few couple of days docked and our experience was nothing but great. All the staff were very friendly (mostly college students), and the marina was kept pretty clean. The wait for any restaurant was rather long but there were plenty things to see and just walk around. Outdoor sculpture park is a 5 min walk and I would highly recommend it. The swimming pool was great for those who stay at the marina. We took our dingy for fun from our slip. My BF planned a weekend getaway for my birthday and took me here as a surprise. And what a surprise it was! Our room was really perfect. The bed was super comfortable, one of the best I've ever slept in. We had a big flatscreen TV, gas fireplace, and the room had a balcony that faced the harbor. The sunsets were stunning. I can still see them in my mind. Our room also had a separate sitting area. The bathroom had heated floors, a huge bathtub that I took a nice soak in, and everything was clean. The towels and bath products were heavenly. The robes were great quality and put to good use. They had board games available to borrow if we wanted. Ambiance wise, the decor was comfortable and not chitzy or cheap. There wasn't anything on the walls or in the rooms that made us uncomfortable. The only con was that room service isn't available. I didn't interact with any of the staff so I don't have any comments about them. My BF said they were great at the front desk, remembering his name when he went to checkout. The last day we were there, the winds were fierce and just beat up anything they came across. Be prepared for that. read more

We stayed at the McMillan suites and the view was amazing. We opted for the top loft so we can have a balcony over looking the water. First impression of the room was wow! It was very clean and updated room. I liked the high ceilings, the newer furniture. Also, for an older building it didn't have much of that old building musty smell. I especially love how new the bathroom was. It was spacious and large soaking tub is great! Also, you can park your car right out front of your room and you don't have to pay. It's very convenient. I say if you stay at this resort, it's worth it to splurge on these suites. It was definitely a nice choice for us with a great view of the water and the boats. read more

I have been to Friday Harbor for a quick visit before but it was my first time staying on the island over night. My family and I stayed at Roche Harbor Resort to attend my cousins wedding in September. It's about a 15-20 min drive from the ferry terminal. I got a little lost finding the front desk but eventually did. You'll understand my slight confusion when you head there too. Check in was easy and the staff was friendly and helpful. From the main lobby, you drive to your lodging area, which isn't far. We stayed in a condo that could accommodate 10 people. It was super cute inside and had a beautiful view. I've always wanted a cute little place like this with fun spiral stairs and a loft. The beds were comfy, we had plenty of towels, and the condo felt very homey. I wish we had more time to hangout in there and cook a meal (which they provide you basic cookware for) but we were only there for a short time. If you do get the chance to though, there is a little market near the main hotel that has a ton of stuff you could get. The only thing I wish was available here is a late check out. I understand capacity gets full but it would've been nice to have an additional hour or two. Check in time is at 4pm. I'm usually lucky with getting a late check out opportunity but I get time is needed for housekeeping. The resort offers great dining choices and if you don't want to stay in the area, of course there are more options only a short distance away. I would definitely stay here again. This place is the perfect place to stay for a little getaway. read more

I'll tell you what, this place is the most ridiculously expensive horribly run business existing on earth. The only reason why it is still open, it's because they can effort not to give a ... dime on how bad the place is. The building is decaying! The floor has 4 inches of inflection in the middle of the room! They had to CUT THE DOORS so that it could shut. Our stroller was rolling down the room, so much it was inclined! I mean... is there anybody showing up for safety inspection once in a while?? If that place was in Europe, the authorities were going to shut it down for not satisfying the proper safety requirements. Here, of course, you can get around that. Then things happen, and people cry! The bay where the place stands is outrageously gorgeous and it would really deserve having a resort reflecting that beauty. Just take it down! You don't because it is antique?? No, it is not antique, it is in decomposition!! read more

I attended a wedding here, and I was so pleased with the whole thing. The FOOD was delicious! The ceremony was in the Sunken Garden, which was a nice & intimate outdoor setting. We had a cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres in the Courtyard, and all of the hors d'oeuvres were super tasty: crunchy meat-stuffed mushrooms, brie & pear tarts, sashimi on a cracker, crostada with kobe beef. The reception was in the Pavilion. The buffet dinner was great: the crab-stuffed fish & prime rib were especially delicious - we were all raving about the food. read more

There is an impossible amount of things I want to say about this place. But the charm and wonder of this is exploring it on your own. I will say, skip the hotel. It's fascinating to walk through but for as much as you pay you should enjoy your own bathroom. We opted for a rental house, the whale watch, and it was absolutely breathtaking. I can't think of anything I didn't love about this place. Well, there was the issue with the refrigerator door and the closet being too close. But I digress. The grounds are very well maintained and it was a joy to explore. The docks and their million dollar yachts, the flag ceremony and the lush gardens. Beautiful. The sculpture park was... interesting, but the totem pole at the end was sweet. The restaurants were nothing to write home about. I think next time I would just cook a bunch of bacon and live off that for the weekend. But again, it's the experience and you need to explore it on your own. I refuse to spoil it. So take that weekend trip you've been putting off. Also, rent a moped because I didn't and I should have. Heh. read more

Roche Harbor Resort is a number of different properties under one umbrella called "Roche Harbor Resort!" This causes a ton of confusion when trying to book online!!! Many confuse "Roche Harbor Resort" as the Hotel De Haro which has its own separate Yelp page and is simply one single property under the Roche Harbor Resort management company. If you log onto the "Roche Harbor Resort" webpage, you will find that in fact there are a ton of different properties to choose from. This would actually be great if the website for checking available dates and rates was a lot more user friendly than it actually is!!! Under the "Roche Harbor Resort" website you will find the following properties: -Hotel de Haro -Condos -Historic Cottages -Quarryman Hall -Historic McMillin Suites -Village Homes The reason for the 1-star isn't that there aren't some nice properties to choose from, it's because the Roche Harbor Resort booking website is so user UN-friendly!!! I've been working in the travel industry for nearly 30 years now and I have never come across a booking website like this that is so incredibly hard to use and make a reservation through!!! I am more likely to be able to find out all of your personal information online faster than I could make a booking on their website!!!! If you wanna try however, good luck!! So charming! The weekend I went with a friend there were a bunch of weddings. Ended up in a room with a shared bathroom and it was no inconvenience at all. Very clean and comfortable. read more

We stayed in a 3 bedroom condo with 5 adults and 2 kids. It is old and outdated but very clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly! The beds are comfortable and bathrooms clean! We got to wake up to a wonderful view! There wasn't a lot of parking by the condo we stayed in. There were dvd's at the lobby to rent which was nice. The dishes were all clean and everything we needed available to us! Would definitely stay here again! read more
