I have driven passed this winery for years and never taken the time to stop. No one seems to turn in here so I alwasy assumed it was because of the wine. On my way out of Napa I decided it was time. We pulled over and after an awful and mediocre experience at 2 other wineries this was a breath of fresh air. First, Ashly waited on us. Her knowledge of the wines she poured is something that is lacking in many of the Napa/Sonoma wineries these days. She kept the experience light and fun. There was no sales pressure and you actually enjoyed the tasting. Second, I found the wines to be superb for the price point. I am a sucker for sweet wines. All 3 we tried were excellent. So of course I walked away with a bottle of each. I also really enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc because it was on the sweeter side and the Zin. All wines are very affordable and a great value. Last, but not least the tastings are free. I highly recommend this as either your first or last stop on any Napa trip. If nothing less you'll walk away with a $10 bottle of excellent dessert wine and a great tasting experience. I can't wait for my next visit. read more

This place is 3.5 stars Decent wines with decent prices. Tasting is $10 for a good number of tastings (7ish?). I liked their reds alot and came home with two bottles. The server was very friendly and gave me some awesome tips on how to get extra samples of wine at tasting rooms. Also when I explained my dilemma of living alone and not being able to drink a whole bottle (as least without getting smashed and/or sick) unless I let some of it go to waste, he gave me the best tip; open up a bottle and immediately poor half into a Demi and it will keep a few days longer. He even provided me with an empty Demi so I could try it out. Another great thing is they're open till 7, an hour later than the rest of the tasting rooms. Great for me and my bf as we typically get into Sonoma fairly late in the afternoon when we visit. I don't think the wines are as good as some of the other places which is why I gave only three stars but they're service and later closing earns them an extra 1/2. read more

This place was a bit off putting, our first official place to taste wine in Sonoma and the person doing the tasting seemed completely uninterested in serving us wine or talking about the wine. No passion or interest in us until we mentioned we were from Seattle, then football was brought up. I guess the guy wished he was watching the game instead of working and didn't really want to chat with us about anything or about the wine. Adventually he left and let another gentleman help us with the rest of our wine tasting, he was a bit more nice. Some of the wines were really good, I loved their pinot that was still being barreled. Once we got to the barrel tastings we then got a semi awkward (in a selling timeshare sort of way pitch) about their wine club and how we should be members. The fellow wine tasters were more informative, friendly, and enjoyable than the staff. Sad way to start out our wine tasting in Sonoma for sure. read more

The staff was friendly but the wine was fair to poor. First time all week I had to dump samples out because I disliked them so much. We did the 6 wine sampler: I wish they were more clear about which wines you were tasting since there were 9 listed (and 12 offered) for the 6 wine sampler; we were too far down the road before I realized we had skipped the couple I wanted to try. Two Chardonnays, both okay at best. Then a Merlot (undrinkable) and two Pinot Noirs (not great). Finally we got to sample from some of the barrels. Given that the wines were still very young, they were fine for what they were. Overall the staff was great but I'd skip this tasting room since there are so many others to choose from. read more

What a great place and really nice people. We just happened to see it when we were looking for a parking place. (of course the Visitors Center didn't mention it) This is my kind of wine bar, all is free, you can sit outside around a firepit (but it was raining so we went indoors) and they have music and very tasty wines. I was so glad to find a younger crowd after our experience at the Visitors Center where most of the staff was nodding off or complaining about how there feet hurt. We each bought different wines but they let us combine it into a case with a bigger discount. Totally cool! read more

Happened to have the same day off as my mom which never happens and she mentioned needing to head to Sonoma to pick up more chardonnay from Roche. Of course I jumped at the chance to spend quality time with my mom and try wine from a tasting room I haven't been to. It was a great afternoon. We had a nice table in the shade and had Nikki as our host who was fantastic. It was nice to have the option to do a tasting flight, a glass of wine, or just buy a bottle and relax. I started with a tasting since I hadn't tried their wine before. Nikki got me to try their unoaked chardonnay since it's actually comparable to a sauvignon blanc which I generally enjoy. Well that unoaked chardonnay is now one of my favorite wines. It was a great afternoon with some delicious wine. I definitely recommend grabbing lunch at Girl and the Fig (or any other great restaurant in Sonoma square) and then heading next door to Roche for a tasting or to enjoy a fantastic bottle of wine. They'll definitely be seeing me soon as I doubt my bottles of the unoaked will last long. :) read more

Came here with my mom and had a great time. Harry helped us out and was a lot of fun, and picked some great wines for us based on what we said we liked. I especially liked the Pinot Noir Reserve, even though I'm not a huge fan of reds. Their membership is really great. You can skip quarters and only have to buy 3 bottles at a time. Also, they throw parties for their members and you can come up any time to taste their new wines. For non-members, tastings are only $5, which is really affordable and relatively low in that area. Also, the tasting includes 6 wines, which is more than other places I've gone for that price. The price is great for great wine. I wasn't a huge fan of their dessert wines, even though those are what I usually prefer, but am actually looking forward to taking home some more of their reds. Roche was a perfect fit for our slightly rowdy bachelorette group of 11. Harry is a wonderful entertainer and laid out his set of "rules" (talking over him, using outside voices, etc), assigning demerits to each offender that were only repayable by hugs. He had a great sense of humor and loves the ladies! The wine was also my favorite of the day. Quite a few of our group ended up joining their very reasonably priced wine club, which only requires the purchase of three bottles each quarter at a 20% discount. This place is more like a cozy little wine room than a full winery, so there weren't any fancy grounds to stroll through, but the wine tasting was such a great deal! My friends and I did the Family Tasting option for $10. We got to try 6 wines, 3 sweet wines and 3 barrel tastings. That's TWELVE tastings for only $10!! Our hosts didn't elaborate too much on the wines themselves; not a whole lot of talk on what to expect from your glass or the history of grapes you're about to consume, but man what a deal. As for the wines themselves, I'm no wine connoisseur, but I wasn't too impressed with the barrel tastings. To me, a barrel tasting is a wine that hasn't matured completely and is still a little astringent. However, this was at the tail end of the tasting and I had already gone through 9 glasses so my tongue may have been flavor fatigued by that point. I did, however, enjoy all the sweet wines as I have a notorious sweet tooth -- definitely a great tasting menu if you like your sweet wines! They also sell crackers and cheese for you to munch on as you consume endless glasses of vino. Nothing fancy, mostly pre-packaged, but I'm thankful for this option because seriously... 12 tasting for $10 means a lot of wine. No appointment was needed on a Saturday afternoon in August. You know, since I wrote the first review, I've been back to Roche a couple of times. Honestly, it's location right there on the Sonoma square just makes it hard to turn down. Both times I've been back, I had a much better experience than our first time. The first time, there was a barrel tasting going on and it was really fun to see them sample the wine directly from the barrel. Plus, the Chardonnay seemed much more delicious. By the second time, I realized that the Chardonnay was one of my favorites in the area, and substantially less expensive than some of the others. Maybe it was just an off day the first time I went, and I'm happy to report that it's been much better since. read more

Came here for some laid back wine time with the parents who are visiting from Alaska. Predictably, crowds and heat are not our thing but Roche had friendly servers and enough shade and breeze in the outdoor area to keep us happy. Tasting menu seemed reasonably priced although we opted for glasses of pinot noir, pinot gris, and the rose. Nice little trifecta. LOVED the 2013 pinot gris here - mango notes, smooth, medium to heavy body. Really enjoyed the flavor and body of this wine, especially since I am not a fan of sweet wines and it did a great job with balancing subtle fruit flavors without sweetness. Rose was a little sweet for me but served cold was perfectly refreshing in the heat. Extra points to sever Luke Rose for being really chill and having the same last name as a wine. The environment was quaint and comfortable, and the place overall looked like it had a lot of promise. Our dissatisfaction came with the staff. We did the tasting (6 per person), but the staff was so inattentive that 35 minutes have passed and we only had tried two wines (we waited quite a bit for the staff between pours). Part of it seemed they were busy, most of it was they were chit-chatting with each other and the locals rather than manning the bar. We then respectfully said we had to leave, because there were other wineries on our list to visit, but were charged an obscene $40 for basically a sip of two different wines. They have two tasting options - $15 for six tastings of their "family" wines and $25 for five tastings of their "reserve" wines, and both come with a barrel tasting (wine straight from the barrel). Tasting fee is waived with purchase of a bottle, which range from $15 to $40 or more. Very friendly and chatty staff, and the winery is near a lot of nice little shops. They also have olive oil and balsamic vinegar available to taste. I am disappointed to give this place 3 stars because I saw that the bottle I purchased was an already opened bottle (screw top), which I didn't notice until I arrived home with a wet bag in the back seat. I think that (hopefully) mistakenly selling an already opened bottle of wine says something about the attention to detail of an establishment, and it opens up the possibility of many other oversights the public isn't privy to. read more

Roche Winery has a great tasting room located near downtown Sonoma. After visiting two other wineries earlier in the day, my boyfriend and I decided to check out Roche. Definitely a plus that it's open later than most other wineries. Jerry helped us during the tasting and was very nice. He let us taste the wine menu in any order we wanted, so we went from the bottom up (starting with sweet wines and finishing with whites). I really liked this because I'm not a fan of sweet wines and would rather get those out of the way first. Our favorite wine was the Carneros Syrah. Their whites were very nice, as well. This winery seems very laid back, and had several locals come in and chat up the employees. I liked the casual atmosphere a lot. read more

This was my first time in the area so we hit up some of the smaller wineries around. We loved it and had a blast - we even had our friends kids with us and everyone was cool with that. The location is cute and well done. I want to go back and hang out a bit more in the area and go back here. They even do barrel tasting (I believe that's what it was called) so that was cool to listen to everyone talk about the wine and get to taste it right out of the barrel. I thought the wine was really good - maybe not the best but I enjoyed it. I think this review is probably better for the atmosphere rather than the wine since my pallet isn't the best when it comes to wine. read more

This is in Sonoma square. There was only one pourer when we went, which made service not perfect, but he did pretty well for being alone at the time. Wines were mediocre, not bad and not especially great. He was really pushing the wine club, but I certainly didn't find the wines to that level. Someone else did join and purchase wines, though. I will say the wine club seems pretty good compared to others, as there's no fee and you only need to get 3 wines every six months. This is an Irish winery believe it or not. The Irish folks on our tour loved it. We were told on our bus that the wine tasting was free -- unfortunately, not true! $5 for tasting "all" of their wines. I say all because he told us $5 got us all 11 tastes, when in fact, 2 of them he was out of. Seems misleading to me. Some ppl had some sort of special card discount which got them 3 tastes for free. Maybe other posters have details about that. Overall, unimpressed, mainly by the tasting experience. Wines were decent, I'm sure some would like them but I was not blown away. Thank you kindly for introducing me to the wonder of a delicious California Rose. We were staying in SF but took a day to drive up the coast - our drive home brought us through Sonoma, so we had a chance for a quick tasting or two and we were happy to have chosen Roche. Everything was relaxed, tasty and a great way to end our day. $5 bought a taste of pretty much everything they had to offer - the pours were generous and we were given a second go of our favorites. The tasting was free if you decide to buy bottles to take with you. They have a spectacular patio and outdoor bar, so even just a glass and some conversation would be worth heading this way for. We brought two bottles back with us and we can't wait to extend the trip a little longer with this treat.
