While in Sonoma one weekend, we happened upon Roche Winery and decided to take part in a tasting. While the wine was just average, the outdoor atmosphere was decent. However, while we were there, we got a little peer-pressured into joining their wine club. Because we live in the Bay area, we opted to pick up our wine, as opposed to getting it shipped. I called a day before we were going to pick up our wine club shipment. I said that I was coming in the morning, and they said that was fine. We traveled for about an hour and arrived at the winery. When I went into the winery, the guy was pouring wine for a tour. He said "Come back in 30-40 minutes -- You are not part of this tour." I replied "I'm just here to pick up my wine shipment (mind you, the shipment had already been paid for). His response - "Come back in 40 minutes". For a WINE CLUB member, I thought this was terrible. I didn't expect my butt to be kissed, but considering I had traveled to Sonoma JUST for that purpose and I HAD CALLED a day in advance and told them I was coming, AND all I needed was a shipment that had ALREADY been paid for (took less than 2 minutes to give me the shipment), I thought this was very rude. THEN, we were told that when you come to pick up your wine shipment, you receive a complimentary glass of wine. I came back after 30-40 minutes as the guy had asked (only because I didn't want to make a scene in front of people), and when I picked up my shipment, I figured I would be offered a glass of wine. NOPE. Just "here is your shipment" and then he moved on to someone that just had walked in the door. If this is standard practice (to have tours come by on a Saturday, whether random or scheduled), they should be more prepared. They could have told me on the phone the day before that the morning wasn't a good time to stop by, or they should have planned for more than one person to be at the winery on a SATURDAY morning. Considering our miserable experience and the poor way I was treated (not to mention the snarky attitude I got), in addition to the wine not being that exceptional, I can only hope that he got some wine club members out of this tour, because he lost this wine club member for life. We cancelled the wine club and will not ever go back to the winery, even for a tasting. We will never recommend this winery to friends or family. P.S. Given that it was a Saturday morning, my experience at Roche occurred when I was completely sober. Given the nature of this business, I do not want anyone thinking my experience was clouded because I had consumed alcohol or anything of that nature. It was point blank a terrible way for a business to treat a customer, let alone a wine club member. Never again will I be back at Roche. read more
