Huge selection of climbing shoes. This is incredible because you are able to try on different brands/styles and determine the correct fit and sizing you want. Lots of gear to browse through as well. If you are shopping for cheaper climbing shoes you can go next door to the Annex. They have a full wall of used climbing shoes in various sizes. read more

Love this place cuz you can get the latest issue of The Alpinist, shop ice screws and load up on cool clothing with most of the top brands. Also a great selection of climbing shoes and hard core crampon-ready ice climbing boots. Staff are always helpful and nice. I believe their sister store a couple doors down sells all used equipment and mostly apparel and you can get some great deals. Fun fun place to browse! read more

The staff here is so kind and helpful. Rented micro spikes for a hike and They worked great. You can park for free two doors away at their annex, which is where they sell used and sample gear at a discount. read more

The store has a cozy atmosphere and the staff were very helpful. They have a wide array of items in stock and many different brands.

Love this place! I've been here many times. They have a wide selection of gear and it's a great place to stop by for climbing, winter, outdoor, or skiing gear. You can rent or buy equipment here - and the staff is very helpful and friendly. They're conveniently located on the main street in New Paltz. So it's easily accessible before you reach the trails. I'll definitely be back here. What a great shop! read more

Small store with a garage sale type store next door. The main store had a helpful, friendly staff. We were able to find a product we were looking for. On the main drag. read more

Great place to come for rentals on climbing equipment. I came here to rent two big crash pads for $20 a piece. They were in good shape. In addition, this place also sells used equipment for ski, climbing, and other outdoor activities. In addition, it has bookshelves with multiple guides as to which places are good to go for certain events like bouldering, top roping, lead climbing, skiing, etc. read more

GO AGAIN? Yes! Well, at least online. They had a discontinued part for my Leki poles that I could find no where else. Extra fast service. Amazing place. read more

Excellent outdoor gear shop. I wanted to rent snowshoes to use in the Catskills and a quick online search led me here. It's actually two stores: a consignment shop with good deals on used items and a regular one. The staff were enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful with answering questions. The snowshoes rental included an option for a seasonal rental ($60!), a great way to test the gear and see if you enjoy snowshoeing, especially since the need for the equipment is unpredictable. Hiking clubs often insist that you bring snowshoes to the trail on the day of a hike, even though you may wind up leaving them in the car. The price for a day rental is $15, and you pay half price if you need them for an additional day. The rental also includes poles, and that added bonus made me opt for the seasonal rental. (On this trip, I wound up using the poles and not needing the snowshoes, so I'm glad to hang onto them for the next time.) It doesn't include a carrying case, which would make it even easier to schlep them home, but that's ok. I also wound up buying a pair of hiking pants that I'm very happy with. They have a frequent buyer club. You get a cute brass colored medallion with a number to hang on your keychain and get a $25 voucher after spending $500. If you buy outdoor gear, you know that adds up quickly. The store and staff had that chill college town vibe. They told me if there's still snow in early April, the return date is flexible and wished me a fun trip. Places like this love to remind me when I'm not in NYC. Sigh. They also have a clean, gender neutral bathroom in the back of the store. read more

Great Shop and Staff, if you are climbing or hiking in the area you should visit. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. Keep the local shops in business. If you are new to climbing, buy your shoes here, not on the internet. Knowledgeable help is important. You will be much happier. Paragon, REI & EMS generally do not have knowledgeable staff regarding climbing. The Internet stores are not going to tell you how to get to the new climbing area that does not have a guidebook or fit your shoes properly. read more

Came in to purchase hiking shoes for my husband. Matt gave us excellent service and fit my husband with a great pair of shoes. The store offers many options for beginners to experts. They had nice clothing too! Highly recommend this shop! read more

I went into rock and snow looking to buy crampons, but had no experience hiking the catskills in winter so I had a lot of questions. All of the staff were very patient and helpful and it was clear that they were all sincere in making the best suggestions rather than trying to make a sale. Rich, the owner gave me a lot of useful advice about what hikes to take and more importantly, discouraged me from taking some hikes I shouldn't. He even fielded a call from me at the trailhead asking for directions. They have an awesome consignment shop next door, the store has curated a great selection and the inventory is displayed really well. It's wonderful to see a small business like this prosper for almost 50 years. Highly recommend read more

Came here after watching some guys and girls rock climbing, (whom allowed me to use their gear and let me climb up, very grateful for that!, now I got ANOTHER hobby) Well that won't be my last time climbing, it was exhilarating. Came to check out climbing shoes and harnesses, and one of the staff members was insanely helpful in suggesting what I should limit myself to getting just starting out: shoes, harness, chalk bag (on sale down at the discount store, thanks so much!!). Store was very nice, I'll be back to get those shoes, and anything else I need I won't be able to get at REI. read more

Rock & Snow - Outdoor Gear Near Me - New Paltz, New York

Ridiculously overpriced used gear, unorganized and random selection. PLEASE save your money - I'm not sure if this place just takes advantage of newbies to the area and outdoor sports but wow do they rip you off. Almost everything used sells at or even above new market value. I saw an osprey pack - worn, missing buckles, stained - with a tag of 150. I bought the same pack brand new a few months ago for 135. The staff is also unhelpful and unknowledgeable (and you really need someone to know at least a little bit about what they're doing when they're helping you buy rock climbing gear). As someone who values the outdoors and wants them to be accessible and affordable to anyone, this place is a shame. read more

I like to hang out in Rock and Snow once in a while and pretend that I am the muscular rock climber I used to be , which sadly I am no longer, but I am working on it. However enough about me , R & S is a great store , they have an enormous seclection of gear, boots, clothing and books, the staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the Gunks and other climbing areas. Definitely the place to go for the local beta read more

I have never rock climbed. First, I am afraid of heights and I also have what were once referred to as "pencil arms". But, I just spent a week hiking various trails in the "Gunks" (Shawagunk Mountains) and visiting New Paltz. This store has really cool outdoor clothes, great sales, books and maps. Plus, the staff were incredibly nice and helpful. We spent a lot of time (and money) here and we came out with some very cool clothes. Heck, I bet we even looked a litlte bit like rock climbers when we wore them hiking. read more

The staff are friendly and helpful, and a great source of information and beta for the area. They will also match the price of anyone else, even sale prices (I think)- Just show them the link on your phone, or tell them where and they'll look it up for you. It may feel a little awkward / obnoxious to ask them to lower their price, but it's much better than not buying from them at all! I admit I buy most of my gear online from the big retailers (backcountry, ems, REI), but I try to support Rock & Snow when I can, even if it's just stopping in once in a while to buy a few carabiners. They really are a good business, and they contribute to many local climbing organizations, and serve as an impromptu lost & found for gear that you find abandoned at the crag. Stop in on your way to the Gunks, say hi, and buy something! (They also have a nice clean bathroom, and your friends can browse gear while you wait..) read more

Amazing selection of guidebooks along with tons of gear. They seem to have many regular and large Organic crashpads as rentals...

I was recommended to go here for mountaineering equipment by some personnel in Campmor. However, looking around the store was frightened by the prices and surprised at how little it was footprint-wise. Now I know this stuff costs money, but when the prices of items are 20% more than that found at other retail outlets such as Campmor or Ramsey Outdoors, that is just ridiculous. Ended up buying my new snowshoes and ice axe online, and saved maybe 150$ dollars. My GF ended up buying alpine boots (not the heavy duty plastic molded types) for under 100$ elsewhere. Suppose if you are in a pinch and need equipment or are loaded where money is no object, then come here. Otherwise, look elsewhere. read more

Cool Outdoor Gear Store in New Paltz. Great selection of outdoor gear, books, friendly and knowledgeable staff. When we asked about hiking in the Mohonk Preserve, one of the staff members (sorry, didn't catch his name) gave us a bunch of inside tips and spent time showing us where we should go on a map. A great place to gear up. The staff is very helpful, knowledgeable and the store has a great selection. Need a guide for your Gunks climbing adventure? You can book one here! I'm still a rookie and don't dare venture out on my own yet. I had a great (and tiring) day! My guide offered a lot of technical advice and encouragement. With all sorts of outdoor activities available in and around New Paltz it's little surprise that there'd be a great gear store in town. Rock and Snow has all the clothes, gear, and info to outfit your forray into the surrounding mountains and beyond. Like every brick and mortar store their prices are higher than online but no more than other outdoor retailers and and they prove indispensible as a source of last minute gear and area info so I always try to partonize them when in town. The clothing selection is good and rock gear selection is excellent. They rent ice gear and x-country skis annd other miscellany. They have a wide selection of area guide books. They also offer rock & ice guiding as well as running the annual Ice Fest. I've known and climbed with a couple of the guys there and all are very knowledgible, safety oriented climers. The back room looks like its off limits, like its staff only, but go ahead on in it's the clearance racks and you'll find some great bargains. read more

Great shop. Trail maps for the area. Lots of climbing gear, clothes and hiking boots. read more

Love this place I funky stuck in the sixties New Paltz. The staff is knowledgable without being pretentious and the gear is limited but top notch. Yes,of course you'll pay more than anything off of Amazon but with that comes the service and advice . If you want to save a few bucks by going to Ramsey Outdoor(yech, they should hire a cleaning service) or Campmor,go ahead, it's only 80 miles or so away. You pay peanuts, you gets monkeys and Rock and Snow has no monkeys working there. Climbing is a serious business and they have serious staff to help you along. Then cross the street to Bachus for some food and spirits. read more

Fantastic and very knowledgable staff make Rock and Snow a great place to gear up. Climbing is the forte here and if you need advice on what to put in your rack, the staff here can tell you exactly what you need, even give you tips on specific routes and make recommendations. I had a detailed conversation about fitting and material stretch with one of the staff when buying climbing shoes here. When one of my cams was recalled, R&S called me to make sure I knew and was OK. Phenomenal. Otherwise a decent selection of hiking gear, there are also x-country ski and snow shoe rentals as well as some other equipment. Yes, they're a little more expensive than what you might find online. But the knowledge, the service, and the support of local folks who love getting out as much as you do is more than worth it. read more

Took an ice climbing lesson from Jesse in March through Rock & Snow (sort of) it was with Alpine Endeavors. I'm overweight. I struggle to climb, but I do. I lost a bit of weight and wanted to give this a try after only indoor gym climbing. Jesse was so awesome it almost made me cry. He made me feel like I could do it. We ended up doing way more than I thought we would and he wasn't judgemental when I had to stop and struggle. If I wasn't so broke all the time I would have done some outdoor climbing with Jesse and stopped by Rock and Snow more this summer. Great guys, great place. read more

The place for gear and to pick up climbing chicks ;0

Great customer service. Ordered some boots online and there was a mixup with the shipping, but they went out of their way to resolve the issue and get me the gear I needed on time. R&S is still the best after all these years! read more

Solid selection of climbing gear and clothing. We prefer shopping at this local establishment...it's so nice to go here where there are knowlegable and friendly staff. My girlfriend Krystine booked an ice climbing trip with Alpine Adventures/Rock & Snow for my college graduation as part of a weekend retreat (awesome girlfriend, right?!) Rock & Snow is right in town and carried a decent variety of gear for adventurers. The ice climbing trip was a nice experience and provided the best ice climbing trip I've ever had! Thanks to our very knowledgeable and cool ice climbing guide Joe, we not only had a safe and fun climbing experience but also learned a good deal about New Paltz, Catskill Mtns, Mohonk, and the surrounding areas. If you are in New Paltz during the cold months and want an awesome adventure go check out Rock & Snow. read more

I used to be pretty devoted to online shopping, but these folks make brick and mortar make sense. You can't beat the personal attention, the local intel, or the friendliness. These are people who live and play in the area, and are experts at the activities you're interested in, so there's nothing about your sport or that region that they can't help with. You can buy or rent a wide variety of climbing, hiking, x-c skiing, and camping gear. They drilled a hole in my climbing guide for me even though I bought it elsewhere. And when I last made a big-ticket gear purchase, the price was as good as the best deal on the Internet. Way better, in fact, because it also counted toward their (free) Top Brass club (get $25 credit after spending $500). read more

This store is great, from the knowledgeable staff to the prices they carry! Thanks to this store, I got my first pair of Vibram Bikilia, and it did take me a while to find the style I wanted, but the staff was so patient; they helped me find the perfect size and pair. Not only that, but they had a 20% discount, so I go my bikilia for $85! I can't find that price anywhere but there. Glad these guys are around. They also have awesome Teva sandals and flipflops... read more

I was on the hunt for some hiking shoes and lo and behold the rock and snow online store had vibram KSOs in my size on SALE for $25 (plus $10 shipping)! Now, anyone that knows me knows that I'm no stranger to the outdoors. I've been outside plenty of places to know my way around. But if you want to talk about a place that is everything for everything, so much so that it'll leave you lost without a compass (in a good way!) then Rock and Snow is a place for the inner outside in you to come out and indulge. First things first, I gotta let you guys know that they have TWO stores. Really cool! One is the regular store and the other is an outlet store where I learned after asking that they sell new and used wares of all kinds but that's for another review (incoming!). So after being directed further down the street by the jolly upper lip accessorized gentlemen, I swung open the door and rang the bell. I remember coming here a long time ago before the bell but its been a welcome addition. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle! A plethora of odds and ends to get you up and around even the steepest mountain. Now, let me be clear, I've been called something of a "gear head" when it comes to climbing and sometimes my friends say its to a fault (don't tell my wife!) but in all my travels inside and out, this candy shop has enough of the latest and greatest sweets to give you a toothache! Need a carabiner to rack your cams? How about 10 different kinds in 20 different color combinations? Too much? Too bad! This ain't grandpa's shop with one lonely carabiner collecting dust on the wall, this place is for the true, overly obsessive, gram counting, gotta have it straight to my veins nerds out there. They even have ovals. Very Cool! When you frequent the outerdoors as much as I do, you come to realize that certain shops become more than just a place that sells you things, they become a lifestyle. Rock and Snow, just like the climbing they sell, IS a lifestyle and a really cool one at that. Just check out all the cool shirt designs over the years and you'll come to realize this place is LITERALLY the Velvet Underground of the above ground (and even above the above ground!). They're a place that can unite a group of people without ever having to introduce themselves. You'll be in the outdoors one day and run into someone wearing a weird climbing t-shirt that has a race car on it for some reason that says "rock and snow" and without even hesitating you'll feel right at home and ask "what does your shirt mean?" At which point you'll spend hours trying to figure out the deep complexities of a climbing shop with layer upon layer of didactic analytical thought processes that would make Derrida think you're being pedantic. Very cool! In summation, Rock and Snow is a shop of ever amassing intricacies. Once you think you have a handle on what this whole thing is about they come at you with a shirt with a big hammer on it with German text that seems really cool but also evokes the mysteries of the universe and leaves you with nothing but a mathematical proof that it is, in fact, funny. Around every corner a mystery, on every hanger a story, and in all our hearts a song. Unfortunately that song is Roadrunner and its playing non-stop. On belay! read more

This place has been around a long time and deserves to be. With corporate big box stores now finally on the decline, we are lucky that businesses like this have survived and will flourish in the future. The original owner, Dick Williams, is a Gunks legend if you didn't know and a really cool guy I got to climb with many years ago. Places like EMS and Campmor used to be OK for private label clothes, but when it comes to technical gear/info there is no comparison to this shop. Glad they're still around! read more
