DIYer here. Sparing a lot of details, I put up new drywall in my bathroom but screwed up the taping and topping. I found Art on Yelp and sent a message late on the 22nd of December. At 8:15 am the next day, he called me. That was the first impressive thing he did. I walked him through everything and he said he'd be over within a couple of hours. He came over, took a look, gave me an estimate on time to fix the errors and gave me a great quote on price. Within about 24 hours of that, he and his team (Ernie and Ted) proceeded to fix all of the mudding problems I had created and re-applied new mud and sanded the entire bathroom. The walls are now immaculate! You can't even tell where the seams and joins are. Think about this--he calls me on the morning of Dec. 23 and he's done by 4 pm on Christmas Eve. The quality of the work was beyond what I expected--it was flawless. I was able to paint the walls a few hours later with the ugly shade of beige that my mother picked out. We had a dozen holes from various electrical and renovation jobs we'd recently done including a 4 foot wide, 20 foot long hole in our ceiling. To me here are the most important factors which justify this positive recommendation: 1) FINISHED PRODUCT looks exactly how I hoped it would, no one would notice any work was done unless they were explicitly trying to identify dry wall repairs. Everything blends as perfectly as one could reasonably expect. 2) FINISHED ON TIME. I hired Art and his team under the promise that the job would be finished by a specific day and he worked to meet that deadline even though it meant working late a few days. 3) PRICING was extremely fair and competitive, he wasn't the cheapest person I spoke with but he was close and he was by far the most reputable amongst the people in his price range. 4) ADJUSTMENTS TO THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT were dealt with with ease and in a professional manner. The day of the the appointment (about 2 hours prior to the scheduled time) I received a text stating that he started another job and wouldn't be able to make it. No "Sorry" or "Can we reschedule". Boom... boom... boom... just like that!! They say when things come together it was meant to be and this experience calls for a 5 star rating! My philosophy... I am a positive person by nature, positive attracts positive... consequently, it is rare that I have negative experiences but I always believe there's a message or something to be learned from those experiences. My lighting project began with an impromptu phone call last week to an electrician that was recommended by a fellow colleague. I'm a retired designer, and have worked with a number of contractors in my past life so I speak from experience. Andy Starr, the electrician hired to install 7 cans in my kitchen started on a Monday, he referred me to Balt's Custom Painting who came out the very same day to give me a bid on the project. Since this was out of his scope of work, he recommended Art Martinez Rock N' Tape. Within minutes, we had Art on the phone and he came that afternoon to look at the job. Art quoted $400.00, the price was fair and reasonable and best of all... he could start on Wednesday morning and wrap up Thursday noon. I paid him $200.00 after the initial work and the balance at completion. The scope of the project required removing the existing trim, drywall/tape a small opening/enclosure, replacing the corner edge, floating the ceiling to blend with the new, and texture spray of knockdown. BTW, he delivered what he promised... there were no delays, no additional costs and he was a pleasure to work with at every step. What Art does for a living is more than your typical drywaller, he's literally an ARTIST and credit to his trade. I wouldn't have believed it if I had not seen the work for myself but he matched the "knockdown" texture identical with the preexisting walls to perfection. I am a neat freak so I was impressed with Art's care and attention to detail to insure the area he was working in was totally enclosed/encased and protected from the other areas of the house. He sectioned off the room with plastic floor to ceiling, he cleaned and removed all the debris, hauled out the trash, vacuumed and wipe down the floors and all surfaces impacted. IMPRESSIVE considering my kitchen cabinets are painted black galaxy so every speck of dust is visible yet you would never know that he was even there! Balt's painter, Pal, came in the following day and painted the ceiling. My kitchen ceiling was done in 4 days (actually 3, the extra day was to allow for adequate drying) thanks to these phenomenal professionals! My kitchen now looks like a model showroom; you would never know that any work or any crew had been there. My philosophy... I needed to repair two mid-size (about 17" x 16") damages on textured drywall, and Art did a pretty good job for me. Here are things I liked about Art: 1. Excellent Quote/Price I got several quotes from different contractors/handymen and Art's was by far the best (about 40-60% less than others). 2. Communicative & Supportive I emailed RFQs (requests for quote) to several contractors/handymen and Art responded most quickly and diligently. Also, on the day after his job, I asked a few questions about painting (which I did myself later) via email and he responded with the answer pretty quickly. 3. Punctual He came in about half an hour late, but he sent me an email to notify me of the delay in advance. 4. Quality of Work The job was a bit more challenging than usual because one of the damaged drywall was textured and located at the corner of the ceiling in a small bathroom. Comcast installed cable in my mom's house and ended up going in the attic and making a huge crack in the ceiling. (Thanks a lot Comcast, I'm gonna write a review bout that later...) Anyway, my mom's all pissed so my awesome bf looked up someone to fix it and found Rock N Tape! The day after Comcast broke the ceiling, Art came out and took a look and instead of sealing it, he thought it was best to replace the piece of the ceiling. So he measured, determined the paint color and left. The very next day, he came back with a new piece, with matching paint and he even popcorned it cause my mom is old school like that and her ceiling is all popcorned. He put plastic down the hallway, dumped the old piece and even vacuumed up the hallway to make sure it was clean even though he put the plastic down. I am a difficult woman to please, I'm like my mother, but I was very happy with the service and the quality of work. All it cost was $100 and it was $100 well spent. I love the service, the quality and most important for me, the efficiency cause I am quite the busy woman and hate dealing with that stuff. On top of that, it looks like nothing happened to the ceiling in the first place. Art really impressed me, even gave us tips to unpopcorn as it can worsen allergies. 'Ppreciate the tip! My mom's house needs some attn so I'll def use Art in the future as needed as he has definitely proven himself. If he gives this kinda of service to everyone, then I would recommend him! I would give him a five star for price and finish product alone, but that would upset many people who use their service because he does not provide 5 star experience. There are several customer service trade offs. I had a small protruding corner wall (2'x8')x2 needing taping and texture. I was quoted a competitively cheaper price less from other contractors and handymen with the difference being I had to climb into the attic and run the telephone wire and cable in the attic. Art's employee man would drill a hole through the stud, open both sheet rock wall to transfer the wire to the new wall, and close up the wall. He was not able to climb into the attic to run the wire less than 20' to the screw the cable into the connection point. I spent a good 1 hour running back and forth to home depot. Definitely not a five star...but I've had 3 star service paying good money and being upset with the finish product. Being on time and being consistent...I can see this as an issue with Art. He will show up but he will likely call you and say his job is running late and he needs to reschedule. Is the latin in him--- he doesn't speak Spanish...go figure. The end product was very close to my existing wall. Maybe a touch more spraying but over all, the corners were well finished, no jagged uneven bumps. I was very ,very satisfied with the job for the price point quoted. I would definitely use his worker again...they cut the electrical outlet quite larger and had to patch it up. After the patching, I was like, what hole? So if time is a big deal, you might have to use someone else. If saving and end product is a bigger deal, this company works really well. read more

Unfortunately, I had none of the positive experiences that these other reviewers had. Hiring Art was the worst mistake we made in our whole remodel process! Art had employees doing the work on my house, to install drywall in the dining room, one bed room, two bathrooms, and patch walls & ceiling in the living room & kitchen. Here's what happened: 1. One of the employees cracked the brand new tub that had just been installed. 2. Instead of paying for the tub to be replaced (& also compensating us for the lost time due to waiting for another new tub to arrive & be installed), Art offered to have the painting done for us. 3. The painter ended up charging us a lot of money because Art didn't pay him the value of what our job cost. Also, the painter he hired said that the texture on the walls looked "weird" (I agree). 4. The windows & doors needed a special piece for a rounded corner that Art did not supply to the drywall workers. Later, he did supply it, but it was the wrong material. 5. When these pieces were not attached properly, they created cracks in the wall (between the curved piece & the other drywall). 6. When I asked him to fix the problem, he seemed angry & blamed us for the cracks. Art told me not to "push" on the walls. 7. Finally, he said he was done & we paid him. Big mistake! The next day I noticed that there was still a big crack inside a closet, and there was NO mud on one doorway (plastic is just showing through). I also can see the tape all around the dining room. Also, the texturing is sloppy everywhere. I must have paid him at night when I couldn't see how bad it all looked. 8. I called Art & he told me he couldn't come back for two weeks. I said, "OK", trying to be understanding. Yesterday I called to confirm that he is coming in a couple of days - again he was very angry & blamed us for the problems. Then he told me that he won't do any work for free & that I should find someone else to do my drywall! I suggested that he just come look at the house. I'm sure he would agree that it is not work he is proud of & I hoped he would want to make it right. He then sent a text message saying that he is not coming. Like I said, hiring Art was a terrible mistake which ended up costing us more money and time! Our project is still not completed, thanks to him. I am writing this review (my first on Yelp) because I paid him already & though I kept my composure & asked nicely, he did not fulfill his side of our contract. A remodel is difficult enough, you don't need someone who is careless, has no pride in his work, and is downright nasty to speak with. Art and his crew did an excellent job in our house to convert sloped master bedroom ceiling into tray ceiling, and at the same time install new recessed lighting in the attic area. This was not an easy job, because the existing ceiling joists were out of square and uneven in many places, and the slope angle leaves very little clearance for framing. Despite all this, the final framing was absolutely true and square. Several hundred pieces of metal brackets were made, each custom cut at compound angles and carefully laid out with lasers. Several smoke alarms and HVAC vents were relocated. The lowest level of the tray ceiling was perfectly flush with existing flat ceiling levels. The patching and texturing were uniform and consistent with existing walls. The electrical work was also excellent. The crew also helped fix the poor workmanship of an existing wall and we couldn't be happier with the results. read more
