Owner failed my vehicle partly due to lack of knowledge on catalytic converter placement. He refused to listen to explanation and was indignant. He further stated I needed to have the unit repositioned to pass smog even though the vehicle passed all the emission tests. This would have cost $1,000+. I filed an inquiry with the Bureau of Automotive Repair and was assigned to a referee specialist. After a comprehensive review the position of the catalytic converter was validated and I was supplied with a document supporting the correct placement of the catalytic converter. Due to this error I wasted time and money and will never patronize this business. Unfortunately your response is without merit. Your claim about my "honesty" is concerning. Point of fact, your accusation that the catalytic converter was tampered was dismissed by the BAR referee who acknowledged that your lack of knowledge about the vehicle and configuration resulted in the erroneous determination. Resetting the vehicle timing costs approximately $75 to $90. If I followed your direction and repositioned the catalytic converter that would have cost in excess of $1000. You reference the BAR report however you never bothered to look up the vehicle smog certificate history and validate that it was never cited in 31 years of checks. To ask me to return to Rocket Smog for a 50% discount is a moot effort. read more

Avoid/stay away from Rocket Smog (across street from Culver City DMV on Washington Blvd). New owner - Fade Sapa (Fred). They charge $60 + fees. My car failed. Fred still charged me the total fee. Fred said their policy of "if you fail, you don't pay" was dropped a couple of years ago. Fred said my oxygen sensor was not working. Car only has 54K miles. My mechanic said nothing was wrong with my oxygen sensor. He said Fred does not know how to properly test - he should have tested independently by disconnecting from the computer. He said he has experienced similar issues besides this one before here at Rocket Smog. Thought one had to pass a licensing test??? Went back today, car passed. Fred charged me another $60. Said it was beyond 30 days. Said that was their policy. If he is the owner, he can make adjustments to his policy. No concessions. Said he would apply $10 yelp coupon - that wasn't doing me any favors because I already came in hand with that coupon. Happily, gave the prior owner my business for 25+ years and was satisfied. Reasonable price and never any issues. And, seem to recall only paying $45-$50. He also gave a discount for repeat customers. IMO - Fred/Fade Sapa poor tech and business man. You'd think a relatively new owner would want to retain a prior long-term customer. Not to mention doing the "right thing" and making a fee concession. These are inflationary times and one should not be price gouging - no skin off his nose. He plays games depending on the situation. Today, when I was complaining he was "Fred" the manager. When I asked for the owner's name, he said he could not give it to me. After researching, turns out "Fred" is Fade Sapa the owner. Gave Fred another opportunity to make a fee adjustment. He refused. So, for $50, Fred has lost me as a customer. And, I will pass the word along to all the people I know that previously used Rocket Smog - before the change in ownership. I'm hearing the Arco at Centinela and Washington has a good reputation for smog testing. read more

I brought my 1999 Honda Civic in this morning for a smog check. The bill came to $70. When I presented a Valpak coupon for $10 off I was told that it only applied to newer vehicles. This was not stated on the coupon. I asked the manager to give me a break and he said he did since the rate had recently risen to $80. I'm 76 years old, have lived in the Culver City/Palms area all my life, and therefore have many friends and acquaintances in the area. After my smog test was complete, I turned on my car and the check engine light came on. The people working said they had no idea why and that I had to take it to a mechanic. When I took it to a mechanic, he told me that the camshaft connector was off, but said that in all his years of working in the automotive industry, "this thing just doesn't come off on its own." He reconnected it and everything was fine. It was weird that my car was fine and had no check engine light before my smog test and then immediately after the smog test, it went on. The funny thing is that I had just moved from Oregon to California and had passed a smog test there just a couple months ago. I find it very odd that this happened. Besides that, the service was just not great at all. Despite it saying on their form that there is one free re-test, the cashier crosses that out and puts $30 for next test. It's on the form and he just crosses out....not very legal! When challenged, they said it was an "old form." It was only after I said that that's not legal, that the cashier stamped the form with a free re-test. Whether or not, something shady happened with cam shaft, the service and legality were just not handled well. read more

We asked about a retest option and was told it was available/included if the first was not past. (They also have the sign about a retest for free within 60 days up, which someone else has already posted.) we asked the price and he quoted $56.95. We went in, filled out paperwork, paid $1 for a soda from a machine, and were called at 4:30 by the car name to be informed we past and made payment. It's 4:45 as I write this and we are happily at home. +The service was good, prompt, polite, and with no frills. We needed nothing more. +The price was $10 less than we would have paid and would have been $15 if the hubby used the coupon from the website I saw. +We were in and out quickly. He has a mirror on a stick, so no problem if you have the shield installed; he could see what he needed to certify my car. My truck failed because it wasn't ready to test - but they still charged me $50. I had received a couple error codes in the past, and found a hose that was disconnected from my vacuum system, and another hose that might have been leaking, so I fixed it and reset the OBD system. I have put more that 500 miles on the truck since the reset prior to August 12 - driven to Jalama Beach and back, Anaheim, Westlake Village, San Gabriel, multiple trips to Torrance, etc., and no trouble light. I did have my tires changed two days ago at American Tire, but I just got off the phone with them and they say that they don't touch the OBD system. Someone reset it. It wasn't me. It takes 10 seconds to check it - I know, I just did it. Whether they did reset it or not, why would you not check it before you run the test, and if it's not ready, tell the customer? Funny thing is, I was trying to go to A&M Smog II - I didn't realize that there were two smog places right across from the DMV. Feeling ripped off. Won't be back. I'm going to see how long it takes for the various systems to be ready, and after getting it tested, reset it and see how long it takes before it's ready again. That way I will know who reset it, and possibly revise reviews. Update: I didn't tell you that there was a code before the test, because I made repairs and reset it 500 miles and three weeks ago and it didn't come back. Again, it seems to me that someone reset my ODB, and I'm going to figure out who it was... Update 2: I did NOT reset the OBD "in hopes that it would pass". I had reset it a couple of times and both times it the code came back within 20 miles. I found problems and made repairs, and drove the truck 500 miles. That should be plenty of time for any problems to appear, or for the truck to be ready to test. Maybe not, but I will reset after it passes and see how many miles I have to drive before all the systems are ready, now that I know how easy it is to check. Maybe American Tire reset it. I still think it's poor form to not take a minute to check to see if it's ready before you test, and then charge someone $50 - even if it is standard industry practice. My Dad was an auto mechanic. He would NEVER do that. EVER. Update 3: So, after a lot of reading, I have determined that, while everyone acts like they know what they are talking about when it comes to OBD systems, most of them don't, and the few that seem to have it right are not experts, and the experts aren't posting on any of the sites that I went to. However, it sounds like, with certain codes, when you reset the OBD system while the malfunction light is lit, they become "pending" codes - and it takes 40 to 80 drive cycles for them to clear....so it is possible that nobody reset my OBD system. Update to two stars. I still stand by my previous assertions that it is easy to test to see if the car is ready, and they should never test a car (and charge $50) if it isn't. read more
