It's hard to describe how fond I am of Rockmill Brewery. I grew up nearby and my school bus used to drive under rockmill covered bridge every morning, so when I heard the adjacent horse farm was turning into a brewery I was excited to check it out. I went with family and early with my first impression I've been so in love with RB! Immediately the owners gave us a tour of their brewery, my family and I started swinging by on Saturday nights with snacks. I grew to love it more as I realized I knew the family (small town) and got to know them more. I absolutely ADORE Judy, the owner, who helped me plan my rehearsal dinner here. I can't stress enough how perfect the location was to bring all of my out of state (and in state) friends for our rehearsal dinner. Plus, costs are low since we could BYO-food. Other reasons to love it: Spacious outdoor patio with teeny tiny chapel Nooks inside, or curl up next to a fireplace Nice people, both customers and staff Great ambient or indie tunes Kitties (Noir is my favorite) become friends Wifi Meditative vibes Animal friendly DELICIOUS BEER! Nice location and tasty beer with a good selection of beer and some wines. On first visit enjoyed the drinks and ordered 2 cookies to go. Unfortunately we found out on the drive home that we had been given the wrong cookies (bourbon molasses rather than salted caramel chocolate chip pistachio cookies I ordered). Very disappointed since my wife and I were really looking forward to tasting those and neither of us like the molasses taste. Oh well. read more

So Rockmill beers come with a pricetag. They aren't cheap, but they are worth every penny. This truly is a world class, organic Brewery creating Belgian style ales. The Tripel is my personal favorite; light, crisp, refreshing, yet robust and flavorful. If you have the time you should go visit the brewery. Just beautiful, simple, surprisingly small. Sweet Jesus this place is great!!! The location is really set away off of the beaten path. You are going to want to have gps instructions to get here as it's in God's country. Once you find it though it is very picturesque with a nice little pond in the back yard, a small church and a couple of old horse sheds that have been converted into beer mills. My wife and I went as part of a tour on a weekend. There were over 60 of us there and Rockmill had the facilities to accommodate us all with no problem. They have an old farmhouse that they open up for the tour and tastings. It's like something ripped out of Montana inside. The tasting was very classy with cheese and chocolate pairings along with a description of each of their five beers. They had really cool stemware for sale and use as part of the tastings along with shirts and other types of swag. They have five beers: a whitte beer, a saison beer, a dubbel and tripel, and lastly a cask aged tripel in whiskey barrels. Every one of these beers taste fantastic and are officially organic if that's your thing. I am a beer snob and everyone of these stand up with all of the other great brewers throughout the country like Ommegang, Stone and Dogfish. The only draw back is the price of the beers. If you are used to spending $9 on a case of beer then this place is probably not for you. Their cheapest beer is $11.99 for a bottle and it goes up from there. The prices are scary but they are worth every penny. One of the best things about this place are the people who brew there and manage it. I asked what their hours are and they told me that they have no hours. Call ahead and someone will be available to show you through or just show up and if someone is around they will be happy to give you a tour and tasting. Awesome! read more

I had long been craving a visit here and got to satisfy that recently. They specialize in funky beers like farmhouse ales, sours, and saisons, many with a Belgian or French bent. I realize that they are not for everyone, so take that into consideration before visiting. Those merely along for the ride may not find a lot to drink outside of the aforementioned funk. It was fine by me, though, and my husband is always game, so we had an enjoyable time sampling our way through half a dozen or so. The other star of the show here besides the beverages is the bucolic rural setting with a meadow, pond, and tiny chapel at the back of the property. It looked like an ideal spot for a wedding, and served us nicely as we kicked back in Adirondack chairs and considered the beers against the backdrop of nature. read more

I am totally jealous of the guys at Rock Mill! This is a family-run business set up at an old horse farm in bucolic Lancaster, OH. They're living and working in some of the old buildings (updated, of course) brewing small-batch craft beers. Amazing and very very beautiful. From talking with Matt, one of the owners, it sounds like business is booming. They've been up and running for a little over a year now and have a presence in 7 of the 8 OH metro markets. The beers (four current varieties with a fifth on the way soon) come in big bottles and may be "pricey" to some folks (over $20) but if you like good beer that's organic, made locally and is truly inspired and lovingly prepared, check out Rock Mill. The water on the old farm is is almost identical in mineralitiy to the water found in Wallonia, Belgium, home of saison ales. Not too shabby! Matt told me they're adding a tasting space and will be hosting some intimate events pairing beers with food, etc, in the near future. I'm hoping they strike a deal with The Quarter Barrel here in Oxford (probably the only place in town that really cares about good beer) so I'll have their stuff relatively close. Though the occasional drive out to Lancaster wouldn't be a bad thing.... read more

I went to Rockmill Brewery on Sunday with my wife and some friends and had an excellent experience, as I do every time I'm there. For starters, the Belgian-style beer is top notch. All five of their offerings are top notch. I love a good dubbel or tripel, and Rockmill makes the best such offerings in the Midwest. I typically don't enjoy witbiers or saisons, but Rockmill's are unusually pleasant and drinkable. Aside from the beer, you really need to go for the atmosphere. The building looks like an old country lodge on the inside and is beautiful. It provides an attractive and relaxing environment to have a few drinks. The staff is always very friendly and very knowledgeable about its product. Scooby the dog will greet you at your car and escort you inside. The grounds are beautiful for a stroll if you have nice weather. I can't think of another brewery that has such a wonderful atmosphere. Definitely worth the drive from Columbus to Lancaster to check it out. read more

Had the most lovely time at Rockmill yesterday. If I was getting married in Ohio, I'd have the wedding there. Beautiful grounds and very friendly people. We had a nice time just walking around, across the little stream into the woods. And the beer - with me it's hard to go wrong with Belgian style ales, but I was really impressed with the Dubbel and Tripel. And the aged Tripel was really interesting too. One of the owners brought us out a bowl of pita chips to snack on as well. They encourage you to bring your own snacks and hang out. Next time we've got a nice weekend day with nothing going on, we're definitely taking a picnic and going back. read more

Such a cute place! This was our first time there and and we were pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem! The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was rustic and relaxed. We enjoyed a couple of flights of draft beer ($7 for a flight of 3 draft beers) and then had a glass of or favorite beer out by the pond. The view was serene and quiet. There is usually a food truck there on weekends as well. However, there wasn't one there during business hours this weekend because of a band that was playing there that evening. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back!! read more

This place is amazing! My buddy and I drove here on our way to Hocking Hills. As we pulled up I kept telling him we were in the wrong place and he kept assuring me we weren't. You literally pull into a home's drive way. The place is in the country so the driveway is a longer one than usual. There are some barns and storage buildings and what have you, typical country/farm property. As we are sitting in the parking lot/driveway in front of a garage, I kept telling him I had a feeling this is someone's house and we are going to go in asking for booze and might get shot. His response " yea it is, in fact the brewer's mom will probably be in there and make you a sandwich if you want one." And holy hell, there she was; behind the home made bar slinging brews! There might have been 8 people in there besides us. You walk into this farm house with exposed beams and very rustic looking. The front room contains a bar with 4-6 stools, a booth that sits about 5 and then a 2 person table and chairs. That is it. It is so awesome and low key. From the room you can see the rest of home, even the kitchen where the sandwiches are probably made. The property is gorgeous, a little pond in the back at the bottom of this amazing sledding hill. Its very picturesque. I don't know if they hold weddings there but they should! OH the beer. It also is awesome!!! Take the 30-40 minute trip there, sit back, enjoy some cold ones with some friends and just connect with some new people. read more

I'm within driving distance of a heavy hitter like Cigar City, and such local notables as Tampa Bay Brewing Company, Jdubbs, and more, with that being said, I will declare that Rockmill Brewery, by far, has had the best beer, and best location I have been to yet. I give this three stars based on our great first experience and the beautiful setting! Really neat sitting room with fire place and family dog. Outside is nice like a state park with nice pond. My wife and I made a second trip and both agreed Rockmill might be a victim of their own success. The beer just didn't taste as good as before. After talking with the owner/brew master we got the impression beer was rushed through the process because of supply and demand. So many good beers out there to compete with, better make quality number one priority! (especially since they are trying to sell bottles for $20!) haven't drank their beer since, but will probably be back to try again, maybe it was a one time occurrence! December 2016, we made another stop just to confirm the beer is flat and bitter and overpriced. I think if you have a taste for wine you might like this beer. read more

My girlfriend and I try to visit as many breweries as possible on our travels. We were up from DC for a wedding and had such a great experience discovering the Rockmill Brewery. The ambiance and setting could not be nicer. The place is so well designed, so thoughtful and such a slap in the face to the rest of us who think we have a well thought out living room. Even if you don't like beer, the effort put into restoring the farmhouse is worth admiring. The beer is fantastic too. I had been on a Porter craze until we stopped by Rockmill, where they focus on Belgian style brews. Now I'm on a Belgian kick - which can be a little more pricey than you average porter, etc. We had a great time. Thanks to Judy, Phil and Brian who entertained my endless questions and about the beer, the brewery, the evolution of the brewery and life at the brewery. We ended up buying a variety pack for the new bride and groom...we also got a case for ourselves :) So glad we stopped in. read more

Rockmill brews all Belgian style beers. It is said the water composition found at this location is extreemly similar to the water in Belgieum. I have been told water composition is surprisingly important for the beer making process. For all you non beer aficionado like me that means the beers tend to be sweeter with a less prominent hop flavor. The tasting room just gorgeous. As you enter the 18th century barn, please make sure to watch your head. The entryway is not much higher than my 5" 7 height. Once inside you will find a small bar and cozy rooms where you can chat with friends and enjoy your brew. The night I attended they had a fire going in the fireplace. As a sat on a leather couch, sipping my beer (Drubel) and watching the fire, I commented the only think that would have made the moment more perfect would be snow gently falling outside. Note, parking is limited and if you are not paying attention you could miss this location. read more

Every so often I have a truly notable experience at a brewery and my recent visit to Rockmill was one for the memory banks. Late on a Sunday afternoon in January, the roaring fire provided a cozy, warm respite from the softly falling snow outside. To say this old horse farm is picturesque would be an understatement; even in the middle of winter you can appreciate why this is a perfect place for weddings or simply to escape the bustle of Columbus. A variety of style-appropriate glassware, expert recommendations and both on-tap and bottle offerings helps make this a beer geek destination, especially for those who like Belgian and farmhouse styles. Seriously, they use Glencairn glasses for their tasting/sample flights and the water that goes into the beer has the same mineral profile as the water in Wallonia, Belgium! Take their advice and bring some snacks, possibly from Katzinger's Deli or Pistacia Vera. Their dubbel is delicious, the cask aged tripel is not overstated or aggressive, the saison noir is robust and the War on Wheat even provides a gluten-free option. The farmhouse is large enough to have plenty of nooks in the various rooms for lounging with friends, although I can see that on a weekend with good weather this place could get crowded. Rockmill was like a little glimpse of my old life exploring the wineries in Northern Virginia. It's like a little pocket of heaven outside of Columbus. The beer was delicious. The cozy and quaint feel of the house/tasting room was perfect. And the grounds and outdoor area are absolutely stunning. I loved every second of my visit and can't wait to return... If only I could get an Uber/sober ride home I'd be there every day they are open! read more

The ambience of this place is insane and definitely at the top end of my favorite places to hang out. I do wish we had gotten a more outgoing and informative bartender for our first visit. The parking was unmarked and left all the guests that arrived at opening befuddled. Everyone waited to be greeted awkwardly which never really happened. read more

This place is amazing. The beer selection is wonderful. I preferred the petite saison. If you stay for more than one beer, bring some food. We had lunch in the red barn next to the lake & it was gorgeous. The staff is equally as wonderful & grounds & tasting room are just as nice. It wasn't the bartenders .. it was the other customers. I heard the same woman ask 3x if they made wine there. The bartender was EXTREMELY kind and patient to her. We truly loved the beer... it was a fitting end to our "summer of Saison". Even the gluten-free beer was tasty. The Rye Saison was his favorite, the tripel was mine. This is a great place to go in the summer for a beer. A ton of outdoor space, tables, a large field, lake. The bar building itself is also really nice. The place is pretty, but the service was a let down. I had a 3 PM reservation, and when I went to the host stand, she basically said there were no reservations needed and to seat yourself. I asked if we could order food anywhere, and she said yes. We decided to walk to the additional dining/bar area that the host told us about, and when we got there, the bartender said that we had 30 minutes to order drinks only because there was a private party. We did want to order dinner, so we walked back to the main bar. We had 2 beers each. The vanilla stout was pretty good, but when the bill came, they had charged us for three additional beers that we didn't order. They offered to fix it, but I said just give us each another beer and we will call it even to avoid a headache. All together, it was kind of just a weird experience. It was like the staff was too busy for us the entire 2 hours we were there. We were excited to get out and find a new spot, but I think it might be better to buy a 6 pack and sit in your own back yard. They are dog friendly, which is a plus. I was hoping to be impressed, and the most impressive thing was the landscaping. I also asked for our pizza well done, and it was super floppy. read more

Interesting place, tied to the Rock Mill where flour was ground in the old days. The farm used to be owned by Michael Landon years ago, yes Little Joe from Bonanza. The place is a little stand-offish in a snobby craft beer way. People are a little rude, like hipsters that think craft beer is the only beer worth drinking. Pretentious idiots. Beer is for the common man, not snobs into the current trend. Staff seemed a little like those idiots wondering around with their sweaters tied around their necks or waists. I saw a post on their FB page stating they were having a tasting of their new beer. Intrigued, we went to check it out. Entering the bar/tasting room was awkward. People looked at us like "who the hell are you" and so did the bartender. I stood there for 5 minutes before I finally said something to him, as he never bothered to speak to me. RUDE. The beers were good, and expensive for a "tasting". High priced at the store too. I understand the cost involved but they are above the average cost for a small brewery. Besides, a tasting USED to mean a free taste...... I enjoy many beers, ales, porters, etc but HATE the pretentiousness of a-hole crafters, those only drinking craft beer and wine. Snobs do not belong among beer drinkers. We felt out of pace, unwanted and unwelcome there. Although a few of their beers are really good, the attitudes of the workers, and maybe owners, need adjusted to be more hospitable and inviting to attract more people and real beer drinkers. This was such a wonderful place and the gentleman that helped us pick out some choices for my mother in Wisconsin, who is from Germany, did an amazing job. She called today to thank me for giving her a wonderful trip back to Germany. She said the minute she opened up the bottle the smell took her back to her homeland. We had a beautiful walk by the mill and covered bridge and the inside of the brewery was gorgeous. We stopped by later for the Backcountry food truck for a dinner of brisket and pulled port to take back to our hotel. The tasting room has two wonderful fireplaces and cozy nooks with comfortable furnishings to enjoy reconnecting with friends while enjoying beer made on sight, I highly recommend trying the flights.
