I have always used Rock's tree trimming for my trees. I knew it was under new ownership and called them for an estimate. They gave me a great price for a giant liquid amber and threw in trimming back my neighbors tree that was intruding on our property and a small plum tree in the back for no additional money. The Rock's Tree & Hillside Service crew showed up earlier this week to do quite a bit of trimming trees and tall bushes around my property in Glendale. The growth has been insane after all the Southern CA rains earlier in the year. They showed up on time, with a crew of about 8 men and they did an outstanding job and even did a few extra things not charging extra from the original quote. I use Rock's they have cut Our 85 year old Oak and z85 year old Ash! They have always don't a great job! Only problem the guys showed up and were told by another guy what to do but I don't want to cut one branch but I couldn't talk to them because the only speak Spanish and I couldn't communicate with them so I told them to call their supervisor he came he is bilingual, I wish I was able to speak to them but he told them what to do! The old Rock's Tree and Hillside company was owned by a certified arborist and was in business for 46 years but the new Rock's are just people who are using the old Rock's name. We found Rock's online and called the number because we wanted a certified arborist to oversee trimming our trees but what we got was just a stereotypical tree trimming company. This new company said they were 'Rock's' but what they didn't say is that they are the new Rock's, not the old Rock's and they do not have a certified arborist. So what we got today was the stereotypical LA over-trim done by some random company that we had never talked to before and who, when we told him over and over how we wanted the trees trimmed, said 'yes yes' to our face but then turned around and did what he wanted to do to our trees. Now we'll have a fraction of the shade we need for the summer and we have to wait at least three years for our trees to grow out. This has made me sick to my stomach and sad and angry. I've never written a review before I couldn't let this slide. I hope nobody else gets tricked by the new Rock's. read more

Mary Beth came out to give me a quote and explained everything about my tree very clearly. A couple of days later her crew was able to come out and trim my very overgrown tree. They were a couple of hours late but I've learned to expect that with home maintenance and repair people so that was no big deal. Overall I'm very happy with their work. The only reason I'm giving them four stars instead of five is that they were supposed to trim my tree 6 ft from the ground, the same height as backyard my fence, but they actually trimmed quite a bit more. When they arrived, the head of the crew told me they would be trimming 4 ft off the ground. I corrected him and showed him the quote Mary Beth had given me that stated it was to be trimmed 6 ft off the ground. I wanted to be able to walk under the tree while maintaining some privacy. After they left, I noticed that they actually trimmed it much higher than that, to about 9 or 10 ft off the ground. I take responsibility for that though because while I did express wanting to be able to walk under the tree, I didn't express how important my privacy is. And unfortunately, with the tree trimmed that high, I did lose quite a bit of privacy... At the same time I won't have to trim the tree as soon again so that's not necessarily a bad thing. Overall I'm very happy with their service and I would recommend them. read more

Efficient and Professional. We called Rock's to see if it was possible to save our dead looking shade tree in our backyard. Sadly the tree was too far gone and had to be removed. They gave us a great bid, better than others that came by and we set up an appointment. Today the crew came by to do the job. To say I am impressed is an understatement. The crew went right to work and quickly brought the tree down limb by limb without any hint of damage to our shed or the neighbors house, both of which are very close to the tree. They cut and chipped up the branches and cleaned up the backyard so well you wouldn't even have known they were there. (except for the missing tree) Same goes for the wood chipper on the street. Wow!!! What a service. Mary Beth, wife and arborist in her own right, came out on Tuesday afternoon and looked at tree and gave me a bid. The next day, a crew of 10, TEN, came here to cut down a shade tree. Boom! In 45 minutes, tree cut down, chipped and area cleaned. No plants/ pots broken in the process. Two men stayed behind with Rock to grind down stump.... and I mean there was nothing left, they went down so deep. Crew was professional and super nice. They didn't mind my taking lots of photos so Rock could analyze the problem as tree was diseased. The cost was a fair and a will use them over the years. read more

We have found them to be honest, sticking to their original estimates even when it is obvious that conditions encountered during their work result in their having to spend more time on the job than originally planned. Very grateful to Mary Beth MacKenzie for driving out to our house. Her expert opinion is much appreciated. The tree company that planted our tree wouldn't even drive out right away, but she looked at photos of our tree -- how horrible it's situation is -- and she made time this same day to drive out. Mary Beth gave us a full evaluation and explained how the cambium was damaged and the loss of leaves was ending the life of our tree. She told us too how she would have recommended a podocarpus tree for privacy rather than the large, boxed magnolia tree sold to us. We know a great deal more about our situation now and we're all grateful for her expertise, honesty and transparency. These guys were the best! I had two companies give me evaluations and quotes, this one was 25% less cheaper AND I felt like they gave me more knowledgeable feedback. On the day the guys showed up on time, knew what they were doing, and cleaned up SPOTLESSLY when they left. They also went over and above when neighbors asked them to trim a little on their sides of the fences, just to keep them happy (tree trimming is going to be messy for your neighbors, make sure they know what's coming). Rock came out to give an estimate on pruning a fruitless mulberry and removing a silver maple. He was very informative and professional. The crew came out as scheduled. Their pruning of my mulberry tree was not very good because when it started to bloom, it was a mess and looked like it was never pruned. It was a "lace" style prune job. The silver maple was removed and they ground the stump. I thought is was all good, until a few years later. I had a big sink hole. It was soft and had mushrooms growing out of it. Had to hire another company to cut the grass around the perimeter and they dug up a bunch of rotted stumps parts. read more

We had a huge, ugle, bird of paradise plant that was doubling as a skunk and rat hotel, so it was time to go. Mary Beth came out to take a look at the job and quickly made an estimate that was well within our budget. While she was there, she offered some advice about our tree and garden care and also wrote up an estimate to trim our orange tree. We had to have the job done quickly before our daughter's birthday party and that wasn't a problem. They came to the house, and were gone before I knew it. They left the area completely clean - the only evidence they were there is that there was a nice dirt patch where my bird of paradise used to be. The only reason this is a four star review instead of a five is that they told me they would be at the house at 3pm and so i left work to open up my gate for them, but when i got there i found they had rigged the gate open to the do the job and were already gone. At least i know now how i need to fix my gate so people can't get in. Other than that, highly recommended for tree removal. Thanks Rock's!! read more

We have worked with Rock and Mary Beth for ten years and have always been satisfied. This year they showed up without their usual supervisor and the results were disastrous. Things the supervisor did as a matter of course, such as putting a tarp over the pool to protect the water from the cuttings and sawdust, and cleaning up the mud from their boots and equipment from the deck around the pool, were not done. While the crew worked in our back yard, Rock sat in his truck out front. The men basically worked with no supervision and they cut much more than usual and did a lousy job. The big tree next to the pool was left shapeless and uneven, like a bad haircut. I finally went out front to get Rock to get his crew to stop but it was too late. The damage was done. Afterward, Mary Beth claimed in an email that I came out multiple times to tell the crew to keep cutting and cutting but that is not true. And since she wasn't here, how would she know? At least when she came over to view the wreckage she admitted that it was not a good job. She said she would be back with her best cutter to restore the tree by the pool to its past glory and to clean up all the mud. But it is five weeks later and all we have received so far are excuses. Maybe the excuses are legitimate but excuses is all we've got. These are good people who mean to do a good job. But without their supervisor the quality of the work suffers. read more

We have engaged Rock's Tree and Hillside Service several times, going back several years. I remember maybe 20 years ago Mary Beth coming over to my mom's property and advising us on care and trimming of her oak trees there. They also came twice to our previous home in South Pasadena, and just recently to our current property here in Pasadena. This time it was Rock who came to our house, responding to our concerns regarding several dead branches in the large amber tree in our front yard. He arrived promptly - slightly before our appointment time. Looking at the tree, we discussed a rather crude topping hack-job that had been provided by a "brand X" company engaged about 12 years ago by the previous property owner here. He commented, "That tree was hat-racked!" (Great description -- a word to the wise folks: Do not let any so-called tree trimming company "top" your tree. Topper companies are butchers.) Anyway, we hired Rock to trim the amber tree. Sad for me, the best time for the crew to come was when I was at work, so I missed the opportunity to watch them work. Arriving home later in the day, I found that the dead limbs were all gone, and all the branches had been thinned, leaving tree with a neatly shaped look. Surrounding plants were not trampled, and other than seeing my beautifully trimmed tree, I could not tell that a trimming crew had been there. Rock and his crew pruned a large oak tree which was blocking the sun from my pool. They did a wonderful job, the tree looks so much better and opened up and my pool is warmer too.
