Had a requested for a drain to be unclogged. The technician told me he was unable to snake the pipe clean and unclog I. He the gave me a quote of replacing the pipe. Long story short. Another company came in snaked it out and DID NOT have to replace the pipe. read more

I have or should I say had a maintenance plan with this company. Never had any issues with their service until this last visit. HVAC was in good running condition and they serviced it twice a year. We were out of town but as previously stated I've done business with them before. Long story short the service technician Tim Eleniko disabled my HVAC system either intentionally or through sheer incompetence. My upstairs unit he bled all the Freon out of the system and then called me to tell me that I needed a new unit for upstairs (see video). Then he disabled my Nest thermostat that controls the downstairs unit. So now neither system is working. Thankfully for me my system alerted me to his shenanigans and have security cameras throughout my home. I called the company and was told I would get a call back. Never got a call or email back after I sent them the video, which means he was operating under their orders. Thankfully I keep a legal counsel on retainer. Lesson learned do NOT let these people in your home unattended no matter how many times you've dealt with them. He walks away and returns after its all out. Then proceeds to call me to say my system is "very, very low on freon". He can't put freon back in it because the freon my unit requires is impossible to get. He never connects the gauges to the other 2 units (I have 3). He said he need to get in my house to check out the unit in my basement. I unlocked the door and that's when he disabled the NEST thermostat on the downstairs unit. I give Rocky Top a 1 and a 5, so a 3 on average. They deserve a 5 because they are generally responsive. They are reasonable to work, their prices are reasonable, and, ultimately, the work is done right. However, they get a 1 for several reasons: 1) Their techs don't necessarily have good equipment for detecting refrigerant leaks. Some do, some don't. 2) Their service manager blatantly lied to me regarding a refund. Face to face he said he approved the reimbursement, but he did not follow through, except to provide excuses. Finally, after several weeks someone else in the office processed a refund immediately. Would I use them again? I am on the fence. I would certainly be cautious. read more

My 93 year old veteran father has been a 2/year PM customer for many years. You would think they would not take advantage of him, but nooooo. Almost $400 for just a capacitor - labor on top of that. In February I called Rocky Top and requested a visit and quote regarding upgrading/updating the three water heaters in my home. When I called, I explained that a TVA energy audit inspector had identified my old electric water heaters as good candidates for upgrades that would decrease my utility bills. I explained that I wanted someone knowledgeable on water heaters to look at the configuration of my house and give me a recommendation and pricing for installation of new water heaters. At the scheduled appointment, I took off work and met with the two employees from Rocky Top Air that arrived at my home. I took them to the crawl space to show them the two 'short' water heaters there and also inside the home where there is a third water heater in a small closet. Unfortunately, most of my questions were met with phrases like: "I'm not too familiar with that", "I don't know the answer", "I will have to check with 'so-and-so' and find out about that", and "I would need to look into that and get back to you". They were able to provide some information that was useful: the heat-pump systems are noisy, so putting one next to or under a bedroom would be a bad idea, that both gas and heat-pump systems would require running condensation lines out of the house, electric tankless is not recommended (though there was not a clear explanation on why), and a tankless gas water heater will require replumbing with larger ID pipes than what I have now. After they left, I assumed they would send a quote in the next few days, along with a follow-up call to provide answers to some of the questions I had asked. But I never heard from them or anyone from the company since and it's been over six weeks now. I suppose the company must be over-run with jobs and so losing one like mine is of little consequence to them. But if that's the case, why bother sending those guys out in the first place? Why have them bring me a 'gift bag' and Welcome letter from the company President (Gerald Allison with his face on it) where he thanked me for choosing Rocky Top and offered cash earnings for making referrals and a $50 Rocky Top Gift card to use in the future? I really don't get it. I sent a letter back, directly to Gerald Allison, and told my story about my experience with his company. He, nor anyone else with the company, ever responded. What a huge waste of time. I obviously do not recommend this company to anyone. read more

AC unit went out on Thursday night. Called for an appointment on Friday, nothing available that day, Monday was labor day so I was scheduled for an appointment at 3:30 on Tuesday. A little inconvenient but understandable. 4:30 Tuesday I get a call (an hour after my appointment) and Rocky Too says their computer system is down and they've been sitting dead all day. Told me that they'll call me tomorrow and see if they can get me on schedule for tomorrow. I'd have appreciated it more if they would say sorry our system was down WE WILL be there tomorrow, considering you've been 4 days with no AC at this point. Called a competitor and they came out for an after hours service call to get me AC today. Never calling Rocky Top again. Update: so it's the end of the next business day and Rocky Top has not called me to set up a new appointment to come out and fix my system, so glad I called somebody else yesterday and had them come out same day read more

Do not use this company. While John will talk a good game, it is just that...TALK. These folks had a "master plumber" come out to install a toilet that was removed for a flooring project and in a day or two, I had water flowing out of my ceiling. Another plumber showed up from the same company and said it was the wrong hose to use, as well as improperly installed toilet wax ring and was not fitted correctly which caused the water issue. Called John who said he would have someone out on Monday (this was the weekend). No one showed and we had to call again. The person finally showed up two days later and agreed this needed to be corrected. My wife had to call again a day later to see what was going on...John indicated it looked dry now and just needed paint... Are you serious. Do you know NOTHING about water damage remediation?! Amazing. I left a message to have him call me to discuss... guess what... NO RESPONSE. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! OR... if you do, just remember...I told you so! read more

Rocky Top Air advertises a referral deal of $100 if a customer refers a friend that actually installs one of their products. I referred a friend, a central HVAC was install for $7,000 RTA would not honor that deal. I contacted the sales rep, Michelle , the receptionist, and left a message for the owner. No one would call me back or mail a check. This is false advertising and I will never use them again. I use Maintenace Technologies for all of my HVAC work now. read more

Stay far FAR away from this place! I was told upfront that I would have to pay an $80 fee for diagnosis to be applied for repair and I agreed. The tech came out and "checked" the system and "diagnosed" that I needed the entire system replaced. He said that there was a leak at the reversing valve and the part was $1500. Online the part is actually $23. He said the unit had compressor damage because the pressure on both sides were the same with the compressor turned on. He could NOT have turned on the compressor to check as I had the circuit breaker off at the main panel. He estimated a new unit to cost $10,000 but would get a sales person to contact me. In reality, the problem found by a reputable HVAC company was a leak in a copper tube that just needed to be repaired and then filled with refrigerant. I paid $165 and the unit works fine. I have been asking the company for weeks now for a copy of the "diagnosis" that I paid for and have never received anything. I asked for a full refund and they refuse to contact me back. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS UNETHICAL BUSINESS!! Rocky Top Air conducts unethical practices utilizing their Maintenance Program. They claim that it is a preventative tune up program, while it is a tool to access the members' home and sell new units. They will do the tune up during the first visit to make you happy. Later they will find small issues (while not performing tune ups) and finally force for a new unit. Our home has two 8 year old Goodman/Amana units. We had the Rocky Top Air's Maintenance Agreement where they come out every 4 months and replace filters, tune up units and does preventative cares. During the second visit this summer, they said upstairs unit has low refrigerant (Freon), recharged and billed us ~$190. After we inquired, they said the leak was due to missing caps of air conditioner valves outside unit which should've been covered by the tune up visit. When refrigerant leaks, checking valves is first thing you need to do. During the recent visit this month, they said 2nd floor air handler needs new evaporator coil because it leaks. They recharged Freon and billed us $225. The technician was highly encouraging us to replace the entire unit rather than repair. They provided a quote for repair at $1,480 (they first verbally said it would cost $1,700 -$2,000) and replacement at ~$8,000. They strongly encouraged to install a new unit!! We obtained a second opinion to make sure. The second opinion from an experienced heat and air contractor revealed that the evaporator does NOT leak and the leak is from the valve outside. He used both digital detector and liquid soap. The first floor unit again had low Freon because Rocky Top did not fix it this summer. The new contractor replaced valves at $30 total and recharged it and no leak until today. As a side note, Rocky Top charges ~$85 per lb (this is a member discounted price) while the other contractor charges only $30. STAY AWAY!! Please also read Others' review on Google (copied below): Krystin Maitlen 3 months ago- I had a puncture in one of my coils and got an estimate of $600 to come out and fix it and refill the coolant over the phone. When the technician came out he was very insulting about how the puncture happened to the unit and said it would be over 1000 to fix, and they wouldn't guarantee the repair. He said I would have to replace the part to get any kind of guarantee on the work and he had repaired something similar a few months back and the repair didn't take and blew out within a month. They did no work and called me back a few days later to tell me the part would be several thousand dollars and I really would be better off replacing the whole unit. They even sent me financing options for a complete new package. I decided to get a second opinion because a $600 repair just turned into me spending $10,000 to replace a 5 year old unit. The other company fixed my unit and refilled the coolant for $418, guaranteed the work and my ac has been working great ever since. I paid Rocky Top $112 to take me for a ride and I will not recommend or do business with them again. read more
