R & J Bakery - Their pan de sal is the very best I've ever, ever had! Hot and fresh! My kids and hubby agreed also!

It's incredible and the most delicious homemade Filipino bun ever! My kids were also incredulous of how wonderful it tasted. During this visit we also tried the chicken adobo (better than my Filipino mom's version and better than the way I prepare it!) Wow, again best ever chicken adobo dish! My hubby got the breakfast plate that had sausages and rice. He loved it. Also got the chicken tinola and pork adobo on a second visit and more pan de sal! The shopkeepers are so nice and friendly. It's a pleasure supporting this local small business. It will definitely be a place we'll return to over and over again during future visit to Kauai! Highly recommend! There were many locals who came too! The lovely owner grandma said they've changed the name of the restaurant, because she's handed it down to her son and he'll run the business. Thank you for preparing and serving delicious Filipino food!

I should've got a dozen. This place is a small Filipino bakery and turo-turo joint on Rice Street in Lihue in between Rob's Good Times Grill and the bowling alley. The Tita that helped us was friendly and I was going to get a bag of their homemade chicharon but decided against it. She laughed when I changed my mind. They have some vegetables for sale scattered about the small retail space out front. But the main draw is their baked goods and their hot food to-go. I saw everything from biko (sticky rice dessert), musubis, empanadas, suman (sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf) for baked and packaged goods. Then they had pancit, dinuguan, fried fish and pork adobo. There were several other offerings that I cannot recall. Pan de sal was 3 for $1 or a dozen for $4. Gotta get the dozen. Parking is in the share lot right out front or street parking along Rice if the plaza is packed.

They also have traditional Filipino dishes like pork lumpia and Pancit. We ordered the spam, eggs and garlic fried rice plate for breakfast. It was made to order and delicious. The price was very reasonable at about $9 for an entire plate. The grill across the street is $13-17 per plate. We liked this food truck for island style and Filipino food like spam, Portuguese sausage, and other favorites.

I had Kalua Pig and ordered my wife Pancit. The kalua pig was literally in the top 2 or 3 I've ever had. Full flavor without being overly salty. Great grilled cabbage with it too. I upgraded to fried rice- very tasty and similar to Japanese fried rice. So good. Even the side salad was great- mixed greens some cucumbers and carrots with ranch. The key is it was fresh, and had spinach and arugula in it as well. The Pancit was fresh and perfect. The kumquat added a great balance to the flavor and put it over the top. The food took a few minutes, after eating it we will be happy to wait a few minutes again! The owners were very nice people! Great job!
