We stopped by for Lilikoi pie and loved the pie. It's neither too sweet nor too tart but just right for us. The crust was tender and moist. The filling light, fluffy, and balanced being neither too tart nor too sweet. A hint more Lilikoi would be nice. But that would change the traditional family recipe upon which this restaurant has built its following with locals. Nice job! We will be back for more pie. read more

I stopped by Wong's after seeing their sign that they sold pies, and I heard Kauai pies are famous so wanted to try. It looks like a local joint with a cozy cafe-like atmosphere with the usual hanging ducks. At the front is a refrigerator with the different varieties of pie. I settled on the lilikoi chiffon and ube and a rice cake. No one was at the front for a while, I think they were putting together a to go order and we waited about 10 minute. I was a little surprised at the total of $20 for the items but once I tasted the pie it didn't bother me one bit. While I didn't get to try the food, it looked tasty and will have to return on my next trip to Kauai. read more

If you are Chinese, my mom will sniff you out and gravite towards you just so she can connect and speak to you in Cantonese. The owners spoke Cantonese and my mom went to town speaking in her native tongue with them. That's how my mama rolls :). Fun find! This review is for their jeanduey (deep fried mochi balls). They fried them fresh from the fryer for us. They are jumbo sized. They filled it with savory delicious bbq pork. And we also ordered the sweet peanut butter filled one too. Both delicious and was a fun find for Kauai. Someday we will come back to try their bbq offerings and hot plate selections. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but I was disappointed. The place looked old and tired, the employees gave off the same feeling too and the food ... just "not good". My wife and I were on the way back to Lehui from visiting Waimea Canyon and stopped here for late lunch. We ordered regular saimin bowl and ono with ginger and onions. Saimin broth was lite and the noodles tasted old. The small pieces of cha shu was the only thing that tasted good. Ono was OK, but the rice tasted plastic and the Mac salad had too much mayonnaise. Can't miss Wong's when driving to the Westside. The old sign clearly says "Kauai's Best Lilikoi Pie". Big words from an island known for some of the best lilikoi chiffon pie I've ever had. We finally stopped by this last trip after heading up Waimea Canyon. There was also a fruit & vegetable stand set up outside and I had been wanting apple bananas. Wong's has dedicated parking spaces out front so it was easy to pull in. And as is customary on Kauai, what turned out to be clearest day at the lookouts became a rainy day in Hanapepe in a hurry. Just as we parked, it started raining. Ha! We got a couple of bundles of apple bananas at the stand then proceeded to head inside for some dessert to take back to Lihue. There is a cooler section where all the slices of pies and cakes, as well as whole servings are found. I got a couple of ube truffles (they were like ube parfaits). 2 slices of guava pie and a loaf of banana bread. The ube truffles were good. Layers of cake, ube, whipped cream and crushed almonds. It was a good dessert. Not too heavy and rightfully sweet. The guava pie was just ok to me. Crust was ok. Filling wasnt bad.... The banana bread was really good. Nice and moist. I had it every morning until it was all gone. I would but that again and again. Just past the cooler to the right are the hot food plates to choose from. Kind of buffet line style. We didnt get any hot food this trip but I would try it next time. Good dessert, great baked treats and friendly service. Stopped for lunch today. Split a 2-choice platter with my hubby. I will say the portions were very generous. We got the Oyster Chicken and the Spareribs with half noodles and half white rice. I expected to pull out the bones, but from our first serving also came a piece of plastic baggie that had been cooked with the chicken. Not cool. read more

Best lilikoi chiffon pie on the Island of Kaua'i... That's what the sign outside the restaurant says... and that's what my Uber driver told me the last time I was on Kaua'i for a 3 hour layover! About 3 months ago, I was at Lihue Airport and took an Uber to Hamura Saimin for Lilikoi chiffon pie - and some saimin, of course. This time, I caught an Uber to Hanapepe which is about 38 minutes from Lihue. I really wanted to try the pie at Wong's! There are free parking stalls in front of the restaurant. Just be careful when you leave because you'll be backing up into highway traffic. Inside, you'll see the dining area to the right and a large party room to the left that can fit more than 100 people. Straight ahead is the large refrigerator where I got my lilikoi (passionfruit) chiffon pie. The cashier was so friendly! She greeted me right away by calling me "auntie" and asked if I needed help. She saw that I was looking in the party room and asked if I wanted a menu. I was just focused on my pie. I asked for a package, but there are none that fit the pie box. I carried my pie box through the airport until I was able to pack it into my tote bag. I got it all the way home to Oahu on Hawaiian Airlines and let it rest in my refrigerator because the pie had been out for a few hours. When the pie cooled down again, I cut myself a slice... and then another... and another... mmm! So good! So light! So smooth! I think I could eat the whole thing! LOL! I don't know if it's "the best" lilikoi chiffon pie. The shortbread crust seemed premade. I would have to put Hamura's pie right next to Wong's pie to make a better comparison. "Eat at Wong's, You can't go wrong" says the T-shirt with the Wong's logo. Always pass this restaurant on our way back from Waimea Canyon in Kauai. Rated #2 Asian restaurant by Yelp reviews on island of Kauai. Of course, Panda Express is rated #15, so they must know what they are talking about right? Place looks very dated from the outside, with the big dinner dining area closed off for lunch. Place needs a new paint job on the outside. Lunch area has a few tables, and food served cafeteria style, with open vats of food, including oyster chicken, breaded sea bass, beef broccoli, and pork adobo. Saimin, burgers and Pupu dishes advertised. And of course their lilikoi pies stockpiled in refrigerators at $19 apiece. We get the breaded sea bass, beef broccoli, and pork adobo combination with noodles, all for $10. Portions are small, Panda Express size, with the wife finding the beef broccoli and pork adobo too salty to eat. The beef in the broccoli is on the rubbery side, but the pork adobo is OK, but could use more juice as the chunks of pork dry up easily. So I let her eat the breaded sea bass, which is quite good, with only a light breading, and tasty full flavored fish. $15 minimum charge using credit cards. Next time will try the roasted pork with noodles, or the kalua pork. The bathrooms are on the unclean side, with a permanently stained men's urinal trough -haven't seen such a thing in decades! I mistook this place for one recommended by Sean Kaleponi, it was not the same place. I still wanted to like this place. servers were nice but gaugee were ok but lacked fresh crunch. Saimin was worst I ever ate on any island. I would not even call it saimin but a bad attempt at best. Prices high for what you get. the Lilikoi chiffon pie could fit in the palm of my hand and cost $7.50 and lacked the tartness of fresh lilikoi pie that I have had elsewhere. Larger side of restaurant for private events only so there are 3 small tables for general public. If food was good I would say it has historic vibe but since food was not tasty historic becomes run down grimey. The combo plates from the food line starting around $18 for 2 options may be the better way to go read more

Good food surprises you even when it's the 7th or 15th time you're eating it. Their lilikoi pie is the best. I have thought of ways to recreate this on the mainland because I want that taste in my mouth on a whenever-I-want-it basis but good things are also hard to recreate. I've never eaten there because I usually just take their desserts to go. The store is right off the highway and across from the original Lappert's location. It has that local vibe and isn't a touristy place at all. It's exactly what I'd expect a Chinese restaurant to look like in the rural parts of the island. They have other desserts and foods but the reason I always return here is their lilikoi pie. So light, tart, different at first, but just right so that you want it forever. I should have trusted the overall Yelp rating. Instead, I was hungry and went in to fill the void. The space looks like a restaurant in decline. The east portion is huge, but has just a few tables and chairs and looks like it's mostly unused, except for occasional events. The west side is full of stuff... pictures, Girl Scout cookies for sale, local snacks, and then a food counter with meats hanging on one side and vats of premade Chinese-like food keeping warm on the other. Nothing looked appetizing. Kitchen doors were open on both sides, revealing conditions that seemed uncomfortably dark and dank. There was however a posted list of daily specials, and I went for the Kalua Pork. It came on a big plate with a substantial portion of pork, white rice, and a scoop of macaroni salad on lettuce. The pork was fantastic... juicy, tender, savory, and went well with the rice and a few squirts of the homemade seasoned vinegar available at my table. The mac salad though tasted suspiciously fishy, and one bite was as far as I could go. All was followed by a slice of lilikoi chiffon pie, light and refreshing, but lacking any lilikoi flavor. Final analysis? Fishy mac salad, unpleasant food displays, dark, dank looking kitchen, and the appearance of a dying restaurant. Though they certainly know how to make a good kalua pork, I wouldn't go back. The dishes seem hit and miss and I just can't trust the cleanliness or quality. read more

Hanapepe is a very small town so we weren't sure what to expect and the food was great!!! We got a bunch of different things including the oyster sauce chicken, roast duck, and chow mein. For dessert we had the lilikoi chiffon pie - we just got a slice but they sell whole pies- and it is legit the best lilikoi pie we've had on the island so far (we've been staying in different areas for past 2 months). Everything we ate was flavorful and filling. Would absolutely go again if we were here longer. My husband's family had a Chinese restaurant for decades in LA so you can trust our taste, lol. read more

DO NOT have your parties or events catered by this restaurant. COMPLETE RIP OFF! They charged us over $4500 for 100 people and did not even serve drinks - NOT EVEN WATER. The food was mediocre at best. Mongolian beef tasted like a pound of sugar was added. Everything was way too sweet. Also, if you choose to cater and don't finish all of the food you ordered, they won't let you take it home or pack any to-go. You paid for food you don't finish - too bad. It is pathetic and pitiful that they feel the need to take advantage of our family during a sorrowful event. My brother in law owns a restaurant and knows your pricing is WAY OVER what it should have been. Real Chinese food! This place is a super Mom & Pop operation. Don't expect Panda Express here. I really like the chow mein here, a lot more flavorful than at other places. "Eat at Wong's, you cant' go wrong" - seriously, that's what they have on their menu. This restaurant really doesnt look like much from the outside, as a matter of fact it really didnt look that appetizing at all. But once you're inside, you can see that they have real authentic Chinese food: clue #1 the roast ducks hanging in the "meat rack", clue #2: the chinese lady chopping the roast duck and roast pork with the meat cleaver; clue #3: it smells really good. The restaurant serves a really eclectic mix of foods from Cheeseburgers to Oxtail Soup, from Shrimp Fu Yung to Lilikoi Chiffon Pie. We had the Oxtail Soup and it was GOOD! The oxtail was cooked to the point where the meat falls off the bone, the soup had chinese bok choy, chinese mushrooms, and was really tasty. We also had the Roast Pork Saimin and that was also very tasty. We didnt have enough room in our stomachs for the Char-Siu but the pieces hanging on the meat rack looked really delicious. One thing to try is the Wong's Bitch Hot Sauce (I should have taken a picture of the bottle as I dont recall the exact name of it). Good and spicy if you like vinegar based sauces. Prices are about $8 for the plates. The place is crawling with locals and the Lilikoi Chiffon Pie and Pumpkin pies were flying off the shelf for take out. read more

Do not walk, run from this place! My wife and I decided to eat Chinese on our way back from driving around the south end of the island. Service was really friendly but that's where the good ended. TLDR: Cold food, dirty restaurant, fly in food, feces on table. After getting and paying for combination plates, we sat down to eat. There was a dead fly in my rice. The beef (from broccoli and beef) tasted like rubber. The sweet chicken was almost ok. My wife's egg fu Yung was OK. The oyster chicken tasted funny, and none of the food was hot, barely even room temperature. Then, I started looking around and noticed dirt and flies. And what appeared to be either a large bug or very small rodent feces on our table. We immediately threw the rest of the food out. This review is for the pies. My husband and I were driving around and when I spotted the sign for the "Home of the Best Lilikoi Chiffon Pie" this stop was a must. Can you same yummy? I am in love with their Lilikoi Chiffon Pie- very light and airy, but great flavor in the filling and the crust must be homemade too. We tried slices of the lilikoi chiffon, the chantilly and the macadamia nut cream pie. All slices were winners. So were the shortbread cookies. Since we didn't know when our next visit back to Kauai was going to be, we drove all the way back the day we were going home and purchased a frozen pie to take with us. Today was the mandatory visit to the Kauai Kookie Factory in Hanapepe and decided to try Wong's restaurant across the street - we had always want to try their pie: lilikoi (passion fruit) chiffon pie, so decided to have lunch too. This is basically a plate lunch place with one to three choices accompanied by rice or Chow Mein - prices vary depending on number and type of choices. We however opted for the Saimin noodle soup. My wife ordered the regular and I had the pork. It took a while to arrive but was well worth the wait. The noodles were cooked to perfection - not too soft. The servings were large as my wife only finished half of her bowl. I of course finished mine and almost licked the bottom of the bowl. The Saimin was served with a small container of hot mustard. Typically Chinese hot mustards go a long way with a small dab. But this was a bit watered down and pourable. So when added to the Saimin gave just the right amount of heat and mustard flavor. I also sampled the Wong's Hot Bitch Sauce -a homemade vinegar hot sauce that has quit a kick. Each table has a ketchup bottom filled with the sauce and you can purchase bottles that are more conventionally packaged. I examined one of the for purchase bottles to see the ingredients, and none were listed - probably not Kosher, but this is Wong's. They had Chinese duck that day and we decided to take an order home. The nice lady behind the counter offered us a tasting to see if we really wanted to invest $12 in a small order. My wife thought the duck had too much Chinese 5 Spice, so that killed the deal. We did buy a frozen lilikoi (passion fruit) chiffon pie and will sample that after dinner tonight. In any case, next year when we visit the Kauai Kookie Factory we will return to Wong's for a nice lunch. read more

Ok I gave 3 not for the food but the service, people are nice and helpful The food...oh the food SALT SALT SALT oh and MORE SALT!. the oyster chicken was so salty that it was almost not edible and I LOVE SALT...the "pork chops" as they call them were good I would get that again the S&S pork was ok peppers were fresh and it was eatable. The chowmein was so salty we could not finish it. The mac nut pie was simply a prebake crust with instant vanilla pudding and some nuts on top I would probably skip for $4 read more

I'm here to review Wongs' lilikoi pie. Lilikoi (passion fruit) is a strong tart flavor, a bit like lime. I LOVE lilikoi. My wife makes a killer lilikoi panna cotta. Tourist books laud Wong's lilikoi pie as the best on Kauai. Or at least up there with the best. Don't believe it. It's a chiffon pie, light and fluffy. That's fine if you like eating air. And it's fine if the flavor and texture are great. But the fruit's tang is so watered down that it tastes generic. The crust is prefab, bland, tasteless. I couldn't eat the crust at all. I was SO disappointed today! I had a lilikoi tart at the Hukilau restaurant a few nights ago, and THAT was very good. Still not the ideal, but closer. You can pass on Wong's. read more

So the restaurant portion is not open. You walk into a buffet like deli. The food is just okay but portions are generous. We tried a variety of options and there was really nothing that stood out. On the upside the service was quick and it wasn't very crowded although they did seem to do quite a bit of take out business. read more
