Review of Collins Electric…read more We had had several problems with our Xfinity connection, and were told some small amount of electricity is coming from our house, so we should get an electrician to find and solve the problem. I called around and got a some answers from those that didn't know about the problem, and some that were huge companies. I prefer locally owned expert construction specialists for the human connection and face to face discussions about my needs and budget. Brett Collins fills that description perfectly for electrical work. He's smart, competent, great at explaining things, affordable, friendly and reliable. But most of all, he cares about and obviously loves what he's doing and does it right. For example, when he was hooking up a new lighted address sign on my garage, he said he could do it, but would request an additional 1/2 hour to redo some wires I had put in, that worked ok but should have been shielded. I not only agreed, but was delighted. I spent a 50 year career as a carpenter and an architect and civil engineer so I know what a dedicated and successful contractor and technician looks like. Brett is like that. I soon learned to just stay out of his way and let him make the decisions and the several projects came out excellent. We got a brand new 225 Amp Panel (up from 100 Amp which worked but was outdated ) for which Brett handled all the permits with both the city and PG&E, a new outdoor back door light, a new outdoor outlet with room for a future 220v car charger if needed, a new lighted address sign, a new hallway double switch with dimmer (that I couldn't do myself). And yes he solved the Xfinity problem by checking all their connections, and all of the outlets in my house for possible wiring problems. He explained that a backwards wiring situation might send some electricity out to the Xfinity wires, and there may have been that in the past but there is not that problem now. And, since our TV viewing has actually been ok, we feel that issue is solved. In fact Brett solved all our issues expertly! APG Electric assessed my EV charger install arranged by Qmerit. The installation was part of the…read morepurchase agreement with Ford when I bought the vehicle. I was quoted a $790 permit fee by George from APG Electric. He claimed that the fee covered logistics, site schematics, and electric plans. He mentioned that if I want to cut cost, we could explore pulling the permit myself. Wanting to explore that option- I did my homework and learned that in addition to the $178 permit fee I also need some techinical paperwork to submit. I asked George about possibly getting the technical paperwork from them; he declined. He also mentioned that I am probably better off working with a different installer. Before I even had the chance to respond or discuss further, I got a notification from Qmerit telling me my project has been reassigned. I find this extremely unprofessional. I was simply exploring reasonable ways to lower my cost- something that George himself suggested. Instead of working with me, APG Electric backed out without a warning, leaving me to start over. I added a couple of more stars to acknowledge the effort George put into the project (i.e. load calculations), which didn't go unnoticed; I do believe George approached the work with good intent. I could not bring myself to go above 3 stars as the delay on my project (due to reassignment initiated by APG Electric) has caused quite a bit of added stress. TL;DR: APG Electric assessed my EV charger install through Qmerit and quoted a $790 permit fee. When I explored pulling the permit myself to save money (as they suggested), they reassigned my project without notice. Totally unprofessional and dismissive.
