We went on the ice fishing tour with Rod's Alaskan Guide services while we were in Fairbanks and it was the best fishing experience we had. It was fish after fish and by the end of the day I caught about 60-70 fish. Altogether our party of 3 managed well around the 150 count. That was exceptional fishing. Rod is more than just a knowledgable local guide. His bread and butter are hunts and he shared stories and photos of how he recently guided a record book Moose harvest and how he happened to win the National Moose Calling competition. Rod looks after you by serving your fish cooked with his marinade for lunch. What made lunch more special is that Rod serves grilled Reindeer sausages for appetisers but these were not just any sausages, he's tried almost every Reindeer sausage in Alaska and gets his favourite flown in from this particular butcher in Anchorage and serves them for his tours! They were the best reindeer sausages we had! Rod is really all about quality. The tent and gear were great too. We were comfy and the tent was well heated. Rod is actually working on a mobile fish box which he is hand engineering. This will allow for quick location changes for optimal fishing. Again, all about quality. He is continually working on improving your experience and is an example of what a great guide should be. Rod is friendly and even gave us tips on where to best photograph the aurora. Rod is also a photographer so he will be able to guide you on the Aurora too! We would definitely recommend Rod's guide services for it's quality and service. We found about this business purely by chance while talking with someone in a gift shop. How lucky for us that we did! Everyone there was so kind and helpful. We did 1 hour dog sled, and 2 hour snowmachine. Jimmy and Kristine were our sled guides and were delightful. They talked during the ride and we all came back with a new understanding and appreciation for the dogs and the sport. Be prepared to ask all of the questions you've wondered about dog sledding. Jimmy has done multiple long races, and has some fascinating stories to tell. We met the dogs, which was a delight. Snowmachines were fun! We each had our own machine for the first hour. For the 2nd hour, I asked if I could ride with Rodney (the guide). I had been so focused on driving the first hour that I didn't get to enjoy the surroundings. My daughter and her boyfriend wanted to go fast, so it worked out perfectly. I enjoyed the heck out of letting Rodney drive as fast as he wanted while I looked around. We saw 11 moose! One really cool thing about this business is the family that runs it. Each person was so nice! They also offer outwear. Unless you brought some pretty kick ass stuff of your own, I recommend using theirs. I could be described as "fluffy size", and they had sizes even larger than me! Wear your base layers and use their outer gear. Even in negative temperatures, we were toasty warm. To Rod and his family, we weren't just people going on their tours. They seemed as invested in us having a great experience as we were! Absolutely cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

My party of seven arrived on March 12, 2021, to experience the snowmobiling and dog sledding adventure that Rod's Alaskan Guide Service offers. Rod's is a small family-run business that takes care of its guests. Their facility is nice and clean and they said was newly built about a year prior. Their snowmobiles are in great condition and we didn't experience any mechanical issues. We on a day with -16 degrees F weather and were pretty comfortable using the winter gear they provided. We recommend doing the early morning trip since you have the best chance of seeing moose along the trail. We saw three moose. If the guide sees a moose they will stop everyone so people can get off the snowmobiles to see. The snowmobiles have heated handles and you get a heated helmet which makes the experience most comfortable. We had seven people in our group 4 women and 3 men, everyone had their own snowmobile and everyone had a fun and safe experience; the women were little speed demons of the group. Except for my crazy brother in law who happened to have found the "sport mode" button on the snowmobile. Don't touch that unless you know what you're doing. ;-) After the snowmobiling experience, we also did a 1-hour dog sledding tour. The dogs were super excited to see us and very friendly, the mushers (guides) were also very great. Highly recommend doing this tour. read more

I can't thank Rod enough for how responsive, professional and accomodating he was! I happen to come right before the season started but once the conditions were ideal and safe, he went with his son to clear the snowmobile trails and pack them, and shovel snow off the area we would Ice-Fish to allow the ice to thicken! Thankfully mother nature provided more snow in the 5 day period Rod and I were communicating, to allow our group to be his first of the season to get on his top of the line, brand new snowmobiles! We continued the fun next day on Chena Lake for some ice fishing where he was also teaching his son how to do the set up for the guest and know the fish species differences. Reindeer sausages were delicious! The experience was overall amazing and our group is looking to come back for more of the activities that he can provide. Im more then happy with the experience Rod and his son provided. Real experienced outdoorsman, ensuring his guest are safe and comfortable. Very reasonable on pricing and absolutely, completely worth every penny! Not to mention, Rod is just a cool dude period! This is my first time doing all three activities: dog sleigh, snow mobile, and ice fishing. I had a great experience. I was surprised by how energetic those dogs are, 8 of them can pull 4 adult plus the tour guide (though I was the only one on this morning ride). After the sleigh ride, I went to the snow mobile ride. All machine and outer wear were very clean, and they provide safety equipments (ie helmet). It was a nice ride too because there were only 3 people including me, so I didn't have to worry about going too slow/fast, or stopping to take pictures. Ice fishing got kind of disappointing though because of the weather, 11 of us only got 7 fish in time to cook. I got Artic char, and it taste really great with butter and lemon pepper. Aaron, our ice fishing guide said he fishes 300 days out of the year and his expertise and enthusiasm made the experience so fun. He had great patience with me when I lost several hooks by snagging them on ice, lost bait, and got my line tangled with my neighbor. Despite sharing the experience with 11 others, he was super quick to help as well as entertain us with stories about moose hunts. When I finally caught a rainbow trout Aaron taught me how to clean it and then steamed it with lemon pepper and butter...so delicious! The next day my snowmobile ride with Rodney was also extremely fun. Rodney even spotted a moose cow for us on the side of the trail and did moose calls for us! I feel the guides that Rod employs are competent, knowledgeable and fun. They helped make my trip to Alaska my favorite vacation ever. read more

Best snow machine tour in Alaska! Snowmachining has been a lifelong dream and I finally got to do it. The experience exceeded my expectations. If you go on this tour ask for Victoria to be your guide. She was an excellent teacher and I felt safe riding the snow machine even though I am a complete beginner. We went on a stunning ride and felt warm and comfortable even though it was -25 degrees. At one point my thumb got cold and Victoria gave me a hand warmer and I instantly felt better. Towards the end of the tour I felt my confidence growing and I gunned my machine and made it up to 45mph and it was thrilling. I did the ice fishing with Aaron and it was incredible. I caught a few fish and saw some of the northern lights. Aaron was very genuine and sociable. A very cool experience. I also did the snow machine tour and the dog sled tour. The snow machines were amazing and it was so incredible to be free on the lake. The dog sled tour was also amazing and I had an incredible guide named Kaycee. She made the ride interesting by explaining everything about the dogs and opening up about her life. What a fantastic time we had! Denver was an exceptional sled dog guide and so knowledgeable. Her love and appreciation for her family of dogs was admirable. The new facilities were gorgeous, warm and inviting. The outer clothing provided was a great plus. The coat and bibs looked new and were clean and kept us perfectly warm. They even provided boots! Oh boy, I had such an amazing trip exploring the the beautiful trails of North Pole! This was my first ever snow machine ride and I was a little nervous, but our guide Ro was an excellent teacher, and my nerves soon went away. I was all smiles once we got going. Wow I did the snowmobile tour with Rods Guide Service on November 9 2017. It was by far the best part of our entire trip. I was able to confirm with Rod everything he made it simple.
