When I stopped into this bakery, I found everything from Dubai chocolate indulgences to Greek phyllo, in addition to the more expected Filipino specialties including matcha and ube crinkle cookies. Spoiled for choice, I shared many. The Dubai was quite impressive as they go, the crinkles a bit dry. I didn't find as many Mediterranean specialties to my liking as I'd hoped. Today, I wanted to try things I normally don't go out of my way for. So, I decided on bakeries. This one had been on my saved places for about two years or so now, and I decided to finally give it a go. Walking in, it was warm and smelled of bread. Very cozy. Everything looked lovely, it was hard to decide on what to get. She had also just made some fresh pastries. I decided on some ube pendesal, and as I'm a sucker for tiramisu I also asked for that. She offered the fresh pendesal as well, which I couldn't say no to, so I got that as well. She was overall very nice. I saw the empanadas in the corner, and I know I'm already gonna have to come back to try more. She told me how to keep the pendesal fresh, and I thanked her and went to my car to try the breads. The fresh pandesal was amazing. Fluffy, light, warm, soft, a little sweet, just so good. The ube one was a little heavier, and had a halaya and cream cheese filling, which I just loved. It would've been better warm, but I was hungry and wanted to try things. I waited til I got home to try to tiramisu, and oh my god that is some of the best tiramisu I've had in the area. I tried one at the farmers market by an Italian lady, and I think this one is better. It has good ratios of everything. It's not drowning in coffee, the cream is nice and sweet, and it isn't too mushy. This will now be my go-to spot for tiramisu for sure. I can't wait to come back and try more! read more

Today our adventure was to try 2-3 Filipino bakeries. So we set off on our mission and stopped by Roela's to see what was popping. It is located in a shopping center at the corner of Holland Rd and Lynnhaven Pkwy. Pretty easy to find. When we walked in there weren't many people inside. The owner came from the back and greeted us. She was a nice lady and answered all our questions. They had macaroons, breads, truffles, cookies, empanadas, ham and cheese bread, and other desserts, as well as halo-halo. I wanted one of everything.. Lol. I got vanilla and ube macaroons, red velvet cookies, lemon cookies, a beef empanada, pork and chicken siopao which was about $22. Everything seemed reasonably priced. I had to try everything in the car. I was excited... While we were eating several people went in and out. So it seems like a popular place. The red velvet and lemon cookies were the first thing we tried, they had a strange taste. I couldn't finish them. The taste lingered in my mouth for a while. The macaroons were ok. I'd prefer them cold but they tasted average. My sister had an apricot bar and a strawberry bar. I wasn't a fan of the apricot, but the strawberry one was fine.The siopao had good flavor and i really liked the bread. They were baked and pretty good!! My favorite was the empanada though. It was flavorful and delicious. I like that it wasn't dry. I will definitely return for more of those. They also have pork and chicken. The outter crust was yummy... I was hoping she had lumpia but she didn't today. They also serve soup when its colder weather she said. All in all this visit was cool. Thanks to tita Roela for her special Greek coffee! I love coming here for the strong latte and frappe... far better than starbucks. I'm gone here a number of times for the fresh pandesal. I love their empanadas, halo halo and crinkle cookies. There is so much to enjoy here. It's not your typical filipino bakery. They have a Greek flair in addition because the owner tita Roela had lived in Greece for over 40 years. Due to financial turmoil over she moved to Virginia because her parents were here. Although she lost her business in Greece she has gained popularity in the Hampton Roads area. This bakery is truly a hidden gem and has now become one of my favorite places for pastries, desserts and coffee. They have mallungay pandesal that makes them original. It's a healthy option to have greens in your pandesal. Mallungay is also known as horseradish leaves or morringa... which is prominent amongst healthy gurus. The bakery has table seating perfect to share the sweetness with your significant other or friend. I love Roela's! read more

Unlike other Filipino bakeries, Roela's Bakery offers not only pandesal in different flavors and stuffing, but also macarons, Italian cookies, baked siopao (stuffed with chicken or pork), hopia (stuffed with mung bean, pork,etc). Unlike the pandesal at Angie's Bakery that do not have the crumbly coating, the pandesal at Roela's are softer as they should be. Their siopao are of good size and so are their empanadas. Their empanadas are more generously stuffed than those at Red Ribbon. The location is in a strip mall with no ample parking. The bakery seems clean and the goodies come out piping hot or more than warm. I know have found the higher bar for Filipino baked goods! read more

Just recently came back from my Philippines vacation and have been craving similar pandesal. I usually go to another Filipino Bakery nearby but their pandesal is not quite the same. Walked into Roela's bakery and was surprised to see how huge the selection is! Their pandesal is very delicious and closer to the ones I've had in the Philippines. I love this place for a quick fix of ube biko and their amazing mini buko pies(coconut pies)!! The mini buko pies are flakey, buttery, sweet on the inside(but not overpoweringly sweet), and delicious. I love picking some up as a little treat during road trips from RVA to VB. 5 stars for 16 hot pandesal served in a Pizza box for a little over 5 bucks! Super authentic and nice and soft. Also, the ube hopia was not overwhelmingly sweet, nice soft and flaky. We got there around 930ish so most the Ensemada and spanish rolls were gone. I wanted to try them all but I can only have but so much bread in my diet...lol. If you're looking for hot, steamy, and authentic pandesal to pair up with your morning coffee then this place is LEGIT. Roela's is our new family staple! Fresh and perfectly made Pandesal! So soft and airy on the inside with a crisp outside, just the way I like it. They also have Malungay pandesal. If you haven't tried it, get a fresh batch and it will change your life! Siopao is freshly made on Wednesdays, and is amazing! For those who don't know what that is, it's a meat and veg bun, with either chicken, beef or pork. They also have a variety of cookies, cakes, pastries and more. They don't always have the same things every day so call in advance to check, or ask what days they make what you're looking for. But they have a great ensaimada (butter and sugar bun, SO worth trying!), Spanish bread, Biko pie (like a mini coconut pastry),ube Buko (sweet sticky rice), Casava cake, and even soups, and more! Maybe I have just had too much from a different bakery in the area and they have ruined all others for me. I had been craving a pepperoni roll and some pandesal, but unfortunately that craving hit on a Monday when my go-to bakery was closed. This one was right down the road so I decided to stop in to satisfy my need for all the bread in my life. I grabbed a few pandesal rolls, two pepperoni rolls, and a few pineapple ensaymadas. The "three star a-ok" rating applied to everything across the board. I was disappointed that the pandesal rolls didn't taste very fresh. The pepperoni rolls were - "a-ok," but not as good as the place I usually get them. I was disappointed by the pineapple ensaymadas and "accidentally" left them at my friend's house not enjoying them enough to take them home. I tried to make conversation with the woman working, but she seemed more interested in just getting me out the door instead of trying to help me find my new favorite items at this bakery. I would like to come give them another shot when the weather warms up again to try their halo-halo and maybe their siopao. However, if the place I go to down the street is open, I don't see myself going out of my way to come back to Roela's. read more

My mission on my visit to Virginia Beach was finding a Filipino bakery that sells bread rolls, specifically Pandesal. I ended up at this particular bakery because the one I wanted to go to was closed on that day. I'm so glad we did! The pandesal was hot, right out of the oven and I loved that they packed 16 rolls neatly into a pizza box. I can't recall if it was 16 or not since I started stuffing my face with them before the lady could shut the box, seriously I could have eaten the whole thing. My parents said the rolls tasted like the ones they remember in the Philippines. On my next visit to VB, I plan to stop here first before visiting my relatives. read more

I came here because one of my friends suggested trying their Halo-Halo. So I did order one and it did not disappoint me. I just wish they add more ingredients than tapioca. Their pandesal is big and there's a kick of sweetness which my kids like. It's a little pricey but you will get 15pcs of it. I went and tried their Chicken pares also, it was okay. Just wish they give more broth because it wasn't enough. Their mini buko pie is good but a little pricey too 3 for 4.99$. But, overall I recommend this place. Their ube Spanish bread is bussin but highly disappointed in the pork asado siopao. It was ground pork giniling and didn't have much taste. The spicy pork sisig empanada definitely wasn't spicy. We'll stick with their Spanish breads and maybe try their halo-halo cuz it looked real good. read more

I was at Salo Salo next door, and saw this new bakery. I think it's the same owners of castaway, but just a bakery. They had a fairly large selection of Filipino pastries and Greek cookies/cakes. Everything looked fresh. The prices were kinda higher than other Filipino bakeries though. 15 pieces of pandesal for I believe $5.10, 15 pieces of moringa pandesal for $6.20. Other bakeries I've been to ranged from $2.99-$4/dozen. I think the other pastries like Ensenada, ube, etc. were a little higher too. But they make everything in house and I believe fresh daily, so that is worthy of a little higher price range to me. The place was clean, and the service was polite. I love that they have NO card minimum. Many of the other local Filipino restaurant/bakeries require a $10 card minimum. Today I only ordered the moringa pandesal and chicken empanadas. I honestly couldn't really taste the moringa leaves (I use the powder in my smoothie daily so I know what it tastes like), but it was pretty good. The empanadas delicious and full of chicken/ veggies, but certainly not the best I've ever had. I'd go back again. read more

Ube or mango ice cream (home made) on top of the Halo-Halo is the best during summer months. Much better than Red Ribbon or Jollibee.
