I work in a special education classroom and came across this bakery after a discussion with my fellow staff. I did a quick google search and loved what Sugar Plum was all about. Upon arrival everyone was attentive and kind. They had about an hour before closing, but they still gave it their all to get the job done. Everything is homemade The cake is delicious. I loved all the variety of products offered. I purchased cookies, cakes, and a few other dessert items. My favorite was the selection of cookies they had. Their cookies were delicious. My favorite cookie was their sugar cookie. A sugar cookie is simple, but they did a great job and I loved the crystalized sugar on the cookies. The location is hard to get to at the moment because of the construction, but that is no fault to them. They are managing very well and I am sure once the project is complete it will look great. Parking is ample, and they have an out door area to sit and enjoy your treats and beverages. A great set up really. The color choice of purple is nice and inviting. Overall I just can not get by their mission. It is near and dear to my heart and my heart constantly screams for inclusion of all. **** FROM THEIR WEBSITE: Mission Statement: The mission of Sugar Plum Bakery is to serve the needs of persons with disabilities through employment, education and training. Sugar Plum Bakery will promote the integration of persons with developmental disabilities into society by helping them become independent and evolve into working contributing members of our communities. Vision Statement: striving to serve, promote, educate and integrate to create independence self worth.

Our family loves Sugar Plum, and its commitment to hiring differently abled people. The ordering process is pretty simple, and they are consistent in delivering delicious goods. Our go-to is their Mozart cake, a yellow cake with a Bavarian cream and raspberry filling, topped with a ganache dripped frosting. Need I say more? Go get some goodies at Sugar Plum!

Sugar plums fritters are so good. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I finally made it in on a Saturday. The fritters are normally gone so you have to come early. I don't know why I'm telling everyone about my favorite dessert there. Lol. But I did. Your welcome!! We also got gingerbread cookies, a pineapple upside down cake, and a raspberry cake. The raspberry cake was a little dry but everything was pretty good. They have a lot of options. Donuts, cakes, cookies, drinks, brownies, and more. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. Check them out!!

My son chose Sugar Plum Bakery for his birthday cake. He got the Tiramisu cake and some other treats...the Texas Chocolate donut, Sugar Plum fritter, and an Iced Crème Brûlée latte. We were happy with everything. Highly recommend!

An adorable bakery with a good cause! I'm in absolute adoration of this place. The have such wonderful sweets here and they employ disabled people. That really makes my heart so happy! They are located on Laskin road where there is a ton of construction going on. That's the only drawback. Otherwise it's sweetness and delight. They serve coffee and other beverages as well. The sea of sweets displayed is enough to satisfy any sweet tooth. Lemon bars, lime bars, cookies, cakes... For about $4 per bar, I got a few sweets and a nice pumpkin chai for a total of less than $20. Little pricey but so worth it!

After a wonderful lunch at Wasserhund Brewery, my girlfriend and I came here to check out this bakery for some desserts to bring home to Newport News with us. But in actuality, this here is more than just a bakery. They are a non-profit organization that gives educational, employment and training opportunities to individuals with disabillities going back to the 1980s. Definitely paying it forward. We did end up picking out some desserts. For my girlfriend, she picked a glazed donut and cream cheese danish. I chose a cookie monster (a cookie sandwich with buttercream in the middle) and 2 cookies (triple chocolate and white chocolate cranberry). All desserts were good and honestly, not too sweet. The cookie monster could've had more buttercream between both cookies but it was good nonetheless. Not a bad 1st time visit. Buying goods which is for a great cause is a huge plus in my book. The next time we're in the area, we'll stop by again :)

    What we brought home Friday...

No stars if I could. My mom is turning 50 and The first picture is what we had showed them as the inspiration for the cake on Wednesday. When we come and pick it up Friday afternoon (the day of her birthday) this is what we get-some thing that doesn't even look like the photo and honestly looks like it was done in 10 minutes. This was $80 down the drain. Actual We are honestly so disappointed as the cupcakes and other desserts. We've tried their taste, so good, but the presentation is just embarrassing and we feel as though we can't even use the cake now. Horrified, to be quite honest and ashamed. Edited to update: Received a phone call from the manager Leah, who had immediately been combative/defensive about the situation. She was very unapologetic about the whole thing, and continuously repeated that we "didn't pay for the outside of the cake. Nor did we pay for the writing." This does not justify the fact that we were too embarrassed to even bring the cake to the event it was intended for. Extremely unprofessional overall. It appears that Leah had simply called only to be defensive. It really is a shame because the Specialty cakes looked so beautiful so it is absolutely shocking that we received a cake in this state. Prior to speaking to Leah, I had spoken to Mackenzie, who honestly was much nicer overall.

I chanced upon this bakery as I was looking for a birthday cake for my son. This is a nice little bakery place with lot of options for cakes, and it is a non-profit organization helping people with disabilities. Their Mozart cake is great. Do give it a a try and help a noble cause!

Awesome Bakery!! Our family has been going here for years. We miss the tiger tail donuts, but their current selection is wonderful! My dad always requests the Mozart cake for his birthday. It is delicious!! Very clean store with super friendly staff. Never disappointed.

Oh MY!!! Delicious Heavenly baked goods. And they will work with you to provide the perfect cake. Growing up in Mississippi & living for many years in Atlanta, cake with caramel icing is my very favorite. If ever in (or passing through) Atlanta I go to my old Atlanta bakery for caramel cake. And Mississippi caramel pie is amazing. Those wonderful memories are impossible to banish. We called lots of bakeries, looking for caramel cake, for my sister's birthday cake. The Sugar Plum Bakery was the only one to give it a try. They didn't make the same hard caramel icing that I was accustomed to in the Deep South. They would craft a caramel butter cream icing with a yellow cake. Yes, that's close enough!! The bakery wanted to decorate the top with other flavored icing. But No!! Nothing can interfere with the caramel taste. I'm a caramel purist!! So they offered to do beachy decorations. When we picked it up it was absolutely perfect!! Oh, except the fact that it was so good that it didn't last nearly long enough. Next time I'll get a bigger cake, for sure!! They have way more than cakes. And the prices are reasonable. Sugar Plum is located on the south side of Laskin Road past the Hilltop Shopping corridor. It's a nice, clean stand alone facility with plenty of parking, not in a shopping center. A really wonderful thing is that they are a "not for profit" business that employs & trains individuals with disabilities. It doesn't get better than that. Try it. You'll like it. NO!! You'll love it.

I chose strawberry, but it was straight strawberry syrup. In hindsight, I probably should have gone with the ice cream option instead. The bigger issue was cleanliness. My tap payment wouldn't read, so I had to insert my card, and afterward, I had to wipe it down before putting it back in my wallet. It wasn't the best impression. The ice cream may be the main attraction here, but with so many great ice cream shops in the area, nothing about this visit really stood out enough to bring me back. I ended up on the combo of their soup and salad since their soup also sounded good. I was hesitant on the strawberries in the wine country salad since I know they're not in season really, but they were lovely. Everything in the salad worked well together and the dressing was nice and vinegary while still tasting of raspberries. It was very well balanced except for the ratio of toppings to greens. I feel as though there was just a little too much toppings. It could've used more leafs. As for the soup, it was a little bland, but after adding salt and pepper it tasted nice. It was mostly soup rather than crab or corn though. That was my only critique really, the temperature was good as well. It could've used some crackers on the side, but it wasn't necessary, just would've been a nice touch. Our waitress was quite nice, checked up on us and got us refills. All of our food came out together and hot. The sandwiches on other people's plates all looked wonderful, and after having a shoestring fry, I can definitely say next time I will be ordering some of those. As far as ambiance goes, it was nicely lit but still moody, which was appreciated. Very chill in there. Only reason I rate it 3 stars is because I feel as though there's room for improvement food wise, and price wise. $20+ for almost everything on the menu is pretty ridiculous. Even for some of the simple items. I don't think the food is that good, proportionately appropriate, or creative to be that much money. Maybe it's just me, but that's how I feel. I'll probably be back to try more items, I'd recommend coming here at least once to try if you haven't, during happy hour to get the best prices if you can.

I have a number of points …read more.. First, I needed ice cream!! The homemade kind of ice cream, which is what every ice cream conneisseur deserves. Ice cream is a stress reliever and smile creator so I happily searched out Lolly's even through construction obstructions on the street. Upon arrival I discovered a rather uh ... abandoned looking, worn out potentially closed "shack" a few blocks from the beach. In the dark shadows of the interior sat a young man with a friendly smile. I was really surprised by the minimalist approach to ice cream flavors for an ice cream establishment a few blocks from the beach in a resort town but I wasn't going to leave. The young man recommended the blueberry lemon, which was "the flavor of the week (I think that's what he said.). I was already in STICKER SHOCK because I saw what I was going to pay for a two scoop regular. His smile convinced me ... lemon blueberry and I added coconut almond as scoop number two. Both scoops were packed with their unique flavors with lots of almonds in the coconut almond. The lemon blueberry was very flavorful. Neither was a creamy as I prefer from homemade ice cream but definitely above average. Secondly, I have already made mention of this ... NO TWO SCOOP ICE CREAM should ever cost more than $9 (after taxes) even in a resort area!! OUTRAGEOUS and if I lived locally I'd never be back ... actually living out of town I'll never be back. A good pint of Ben and Jerry's is a better option. With such high priced ice cream you would think that they'd clean up the place but perhaps they consider down and dirty a "beach feel." Yes, I am sure the road construction has impacted them (I asked the smiling young man and he said business is slow in the afternoon but says weekends are busier.) including their ability/interest in keeping up appearances. So, if you are a tourist with some cash or a good credit card status .. you'll find some good ice cream at Lolly's. I enjoyed my once and done treat.
