I work in a special education classroom and came across this bakery after a discussion with my fellow staff. I did a quick google search and loved what Sugar Plum was all about. Upon arrival everyone was attentive and kind. They had about an hour before closing, but they still gave it their all to get the job done. Everything is homemade The cake is delicious. I loved all the variety of products offered. I purchased cookies, cakes, and a few other dessert items. My favorite was the selection of cookies they had. Their cookies were delicious. My favorite cookie was their sugar cookie. A sugar cookie is simple, but they did a great job and I loved the crystalized sugar on the cookies. The location is hard to get to at the moment because of the construction, but that is no fault to them. They are managing very well and I am sure once the project is complete it will look great. Parking is ample, and they have an out door area to sit and enjoy your treats and beverages. A great set up really. The color choice of purple is nice and inviting. Overall I just can not get by their mission. It is near and dear to my heart and my heart constantly screams for inclusion of all. **** FROM THEIR WEBSITE: Mission Statement: The mission of Sugar Plum Bakery is to serve the needs of persons with disabilities through employment, education and training. Our family loves Sugar Plum, and its commitment to hiring differently abled people. The ordering process is pretty simple, and they are consistent in delivering delicious goods. Our go-to is their Mozart cake, a yellow cake with a Bavarian cream and raspberry filling, topped with a ganache dripped frosting. Need I say more? Go get some goodies at Sugar Plum!

Sugar plums fritters are so good. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I finally made it in on a Saturday. The fritters are normally gone so you have to come early. I don't know why I'm telling everyone about my favorite dessert there. Lol. But I did. Your welcome!! We also got gingerbread cookies, a pineapple upside down cake, and a raspberry cake. The raspberry cake was a little dry but everything was pretty good. They have a lot of options. Donuts, cakes, cookies, drinks, brownies, and more. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. Check them out!!

My son chose Sugar Plum Bakery for his birthday cake. He got the Tiramisu cake and some other treats...the Texas Chocolate donut, Sugar Plum fritter, and an Iced Crème Brûlée latte. We were happy with everything. Highly recommend!

An adorable bakery with a good cause! I'm in absolute adoration of this place. The have such wonderful sweets here and they employ disabled people. That really makes my heart so happy! They are located on Laskin road where there is a ton of construction going on. That's the only drawback. Otherwise it's sweetness and delight. They serve coffee and other beverages as well. The sea of sweets displayed is enough to satisfy any sweet tooth. Lemon bars, lime bars, cookies, cakes... For about $4 per bar, I got a few sweets and a nice pumpkin chai for a total of less than $20. Little pricey but so worth it!

After a wonderful lunch at Wasserhund Brewery, my girlfriend and I came here to check out this bakery for some desserts to bring home to Newport News with us. But in actuality, this here is more than just a bakery. They are a non-profit organization that gives educational, employment and training opportunities to individuals with disabillities going back to the 1980s. Definitely paying it forward. We did end up picking out some desserts. For my girlfriend, she picked a glazed donut and cream cheese danish. I chose a cookie monster (a cookie sandwich with buttercream in the middle) and 2 cookies (triple chocolate and white chocolate cranberry). All desserts were good and honestly, not too sweet. The cookie monster could've had more buttercream between both cookies but it was good nonetheless. Not a bad 1st time visit. Buying goods which is for a great cause is a huge plus in my book. The next time we're in the area, we'll stop by again :)

    What we brought home Friday...

No stars if I could. My mom is turning 50 and The first picture is what we had showed them as the inspiration for the cake on Wednesday. When we come and pick it up Friday afternoon (the day of her birthday) this is what we get-some thing that doesn't even look like the photo and honestly looks like it was done in 10 minutes. This was $80 down the drain. Actual We are honestly so disappointed as the cupcakes and other desserts. We've tried their taste, so good, but the presentation is just embarrassing and we feel as though we can't even use the cake now. Horrified, to be quite honest and ashamed. Edited to update: Received a phone call from the manager Leah, who had immediately been combative/defensive about the situation. She was very unapologetic about the whole thing, and continuously repeated that we "didn't pay for the outside of the cake. Nor did we pay for the writing." This does not justify the fact that we were too embarrassed to even bring the cake to the event it was intended for. Extremely unprofessional overall. It appears that Leah had simply called only to be defensive. It really is a shame because the Specialty cakes looked so beautiful so it is absolutely shocking that we received a cake in this state. Prior to speaking to Leah, I had spoken to Mackenzie, who honestly was much nicer overall.

I chanced upon this bakery as I was looking for a birthday cake for my son. This is a nice little bakery place with lot of options for cakes, and it is a non-profit organization helping people with disabilities. Their Mozart cake is great. Do give it a a try and help a noble cause!

Awesome Bakery!! Our family has been going here for years. We miss the tiger tail donuts, but their current selection is wonderful! My dad always requests the Mozart cake for his birthday. It is delicious!! Very clean store with super friendly staff. Never disappointed.

Oh MY!!! Delicious Heavenly baked goods. And they will work with you to provide the perfect cake. Growing up in Mississippi & living for many years in Atlanta, cake with caramel icing is my very favorite. If ever in (or passing through) Atlanta I go to my old Atlanta bakery for caramel cake. And Mississippi caramel pie is amazing. Those wonderful memories are impossible to banish. We called lots of bakeries, looking for caramel cake, for my sister's birthday cake. The Sugar Plum Bakery was the only one to give it a try. They didn't make the same hard caramel icing that I was accustomed to in the Deep South. They would craft a caramel butter cream icing with a yellow cake. Yes, that's close enough!! The bakery wanted to decorate the top with other flavored icing. But No!! Nothing can interfere with the caramel taste. I'm a caramel purist!! So they offered to do beachy decorations. When we picked it up it was absolutely perfect!! Oh, except the fact that it was so good that it didn't last nearly long enough. Next time I'll get a bigger cake, for sure!! They have way more than cakes. And the prices are reasonable. Sugar Plum is located on the south side of Laskin Road past the Hilltop Shopping corridor. It's a nice, clean stand alone facility with plenty of parking, not in a shopping center. A really wonderful thing is that they are a "not for profit" business that employs & trains individuals with disabilities. It doesn't get better than that. Try it. You'll like it. NO!! You'll love it.

I already knew this was my destination as I had been following them since they opened in VB. Upon our arrival we found the Cafe about a 1/4th of the way full so I had hopes for breakfast in a quiet setting. Even though there was a steady flow of traffic, we were able to dine in a relaxed setting without feeling rushed. I mention this because with it being a holiday weekend full of Jeepers, I fully expected them to be packed. The wait to order was too long as it left me staring at the pastry window so long I almost ordered one of everything however; I refrained from doing so but still bought 4 pastries, French toast & seasoned potatoes. Yes yes, alot of food for 1 person but I still had 2 days left in my visit and well, I have a thing for pastries. The pastries were: mango & passion fruit eclair, a pineapple muffin, lemon raspberry cake & profiteroles. I loved everything with the exception of the eclair. It wasn't anything against the eclair, it's just the mango/passionfruit mixture was just too passionate for my tastes. The muffin reminded me of my own homemade upside pineapple cake without all the brown sugar. It was light and buttery. The Lemon raspberry slice was delightful & not the least bit tart or too sweet. A mixture of both flavors without either one overpowering the other. The cake was super moist, perfect. The profiteroles were my favorite. They reminded me of that feeling I had the 1st time I tasted them while living in Italy. The choux perfectly baked and so delightfully light. The French toast was good enough without the side of syrup. The star for me of the breakfast items were the potatoes. I LOVED them. They were served HOT, seasoned just right with their insides softer that a baby bottom. I coulda just ordered 2 servings of those & bypassed the toast. All in all, well worth the wait. The folks were friendly, the Cafe clean and the seating plentiful and comfortable. I would recommend this place for both pastries & French toast & spuds.
