I was shocked to find a large piece of glass in my Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Biscotti from Flour Child Bakery. I felt it in my mouth while eating and immediately stopped. Thankfully, I was not injured, and I'm especially grateful that my elderly mother did not have the piece that was in my biscotti. What was most concerning was the response when I returned to the bakery to report it. The employee told me the owners had already left, but there was no apology or sense of urgency regarding what could have been a very serious safety issue. I brought the glass back to the bakery and made them aware of the situation. At this point, I believe it is the owners' responsibility to contact me and address this matter. Finding glass in a food product is extremely dangerous, and I hope they take the necessary steps to ensure this never happens to another customer. read more

Tucked into a little shop at the entrance to the Thoroughgood neighborhood, Flour Child is a go-to for unique and delicious creations. My daughter swears by their variety of cake pops, but I'm much more into their pies and cakes. I ordered several pies from them for a company evet and was thrilled at how incredible the Lemon Meringue and Cheesecake were. It was a huge hit with everyone. We live in the OV/East beach area and see this bakery set up all the time but we never stopped by- BIG mistake! We stopped in on a Saturday to grab emergency cupcakes. A friend was having an impromptu birthday gathering and needed something sweet. I called several places in the area and no one had what we were looking for on hand.... Until we got to Flour Child. Not only were these cupcakes the perfect sweet treat, they were reasonably priced and adorable! She had quite a few options, I only wish we could have tried them all. The grasshopper was easily the best choc/mint cupcake I've ever had. Think girlscouts thin mint in cupcake form. The mint icing wasn't weird or overpowering at all. The red velvet was my personal favorite- her cream cheese butter cream was excellent! She was so patient with us while we picked out our cupcakes. Service with a smile! I was first turned onto this particular bakery because of the hot cocoa bombs. They come in all different flavors and all of them have been great. Sweetness is perfect and quality is rich and delicious. Even better is the pretty packaging. They make great gifts. OH the Cake Pops. Talk about variety. This is when you want to get a box of POPS. The most fun is picking out all the different flavors. I would tell you specific favorites but with each person their favorite is different. There must be at least 20 different ones. My faves are the wicked(chocolate and red hot cinnamon), cookies and cream, and the almond joy. My husband has like all of them. My mother-in-law likes the eggnog, gingerbread, and red velvet. You will have to pick your own favorites. The brownie bites are brownies dipped in chocolate and fancy sprinkles on top. They have a stick you hold to eat them. Oh my gosh, what a total delight! I stopped in after work to buy some sweets for my honey and I was worried that there wouldn't be much selection since it was later in the day. I was wrong! The two large display cases were absolutely oozing with the sugar-filled morsels of your dreams. I selected 8 cake pops of various flavors, a chocolate drizzle cheesecake brownie, and a peanut butter chocolate cupcake. We purchased a cinnamon roll from the pop up at East Beach Farmers market. I'm pretty sure eating a Flour Child cinnamon roll on the beach is my new favorite weekend summer activity. The Apple cake was EASILY a 10/10 based on taste and texture. It wasn't too sweet and was full of flavor! The cake was moist, but had a crunchy exterior that was perfect. The carrot cake was underwhelming. The cream cheese frosting was too sweet and it tasted like lemon extract was in it; it was almost acidic. While the flavor of the cake was fine, the texture was a little too crumbly for me. The serving sizes were pretty big. The husband and I split both over the course of the day. I ALWAYS make it a point to visit this bakery when I am in town. For Thanksgiving, my sister ordered a pecan pie, apple pie, and dinner rolls. I picked up cake pops, brownies, and their chocolate cupcakes. Wow! If you're looking for chocolatey goodness, this place is it! Their cupcakes are deliciously moist, not overly sweet, and have a rich chocolate flavor. Cake pops are perfection on a stick. Their southern pecan pie was the star of the show. Not too sweet, loaded with pecans, and the nice ratio of pecans to "goo." It was so good and well worth the price. We are always in search of a good bakery, and after hearing great reviews for Flour Child, we made the trip here last Saturday. There was a great selection and more than a few things I was interested in. Mom and I got several things to go, so we could take back home to my dad and brother. Death By Chocolate Cupcake - oh my god. This was phenomenal. A devils food cake cupcake with ganache center and soft fluffy chocolate frosting. I ate the entire thing in the parking lot. It was kept in the cold case which made it perfect - cold ganache is fantastic to be and it just really made it extra good. Blueberry crumble bar - I've been savoring this for days. I love blueberry and I love crumble pies/bars and this was outstanding. A good thick layer of berry filling, delicious crumble and crust that was nice and golden and perfectly sweet. It is so fantastic and I have had a hard time holding myself back from eating it all at once. Spritz cookies - mom loves these and has been talking about going back for more. They aren't ever really my thing so I'm not a great judge but she loved them and is very picky since she's a (hobbies) baker. Chocolate coconut macaroons - another hit! Again, not my usual jam but mom was very happy and said they weren't too dry like some get. Confetti cupcake - my brother wasn't a huge fan of this. He found it to be a bit dry. Cookies and Cream cupcake - it was ok - the frosting was good but the cake seemed a little dry and didn't have a very profound flavor. Compared to the Death by Chocolate cupcake it was worlds apart I will absolutely return! I had been aware of FLour child bakery's presence from a friend's baby shower 3 years ago but never took the time to properly taste more of their goods. My mission to find my brother an almond pound cake the day of his birthday lead me to these delectable desserts! A small bakery showcasing jumbo cupcakes, meringues, cake pops, brownies, macaroons to mini key lime pies oh my!! Nothing falls short of dreams of tantalizing sweet treats. The gluten free brownies are so thick and moist with bursts of chocolate explosions with every bite! The wedding cupcakes have a light flavor, but with a definitive presence of almond. Every mouthful is accompanied by an abundance of buttery cream icing. Their gluten free meringues are fluffy, but firm drops with soft, tiny speckled fun color balls of crunchy families of six in a cellophane bag adorned with a simple ribbon. It's sure to be a sin to partake in such consumption of delightful, dandy desserts! But it's okay it's all done in the name of love and peace, or rather "pieces" of confectionary concoctions. I guess it has been a minute since I've reviewed Flour Child! I've continued to stop in throughout the years when I had a sweet tooth in the area. It wasn't necessarily a spot I would go out of my way for... until I tried the pie. I'll drive all day for their lemon meringue pie. I just picked one up this weekend for a friend's birthday and we totally crushed it. I ate far more of that pie than I should admit and I have no regrets. They keep a wide selection of cupcakes and other grab n' go treats. I think they really bring home a win with their custom orders of pies and cakes. I saw on their social media that they are currently totally booked for custom cake orders for the next 3 weeks. You don't get booked for weeks if you aren't doing something right! I'll definitely try one of their custom cakes next time I am in the need of one. Flour Child will also continue to get my pie money. I call it my pie money, because I just might have to set aside a quarterly pie budget just so I can try a few of their other pies. read more

I was highly disappointed today. My son and I came in today to purchase some goodies but received no service. There were three staff members working, one who made eye contact but no one offered to assist. I looked around hoping that someone would acknowledge us. I stood there debating whether or not I was going to disregard my feelings/experience and make a purchase. My son and I ended up leaving. Again, no one stop and ask if we needed any assistance, not even a "have a nice day, thanks for comingin" as we left. This experience made me feel invisible. You did not deserve my money, but I will give you my time by telling the next potential customer my experience. Ordered a butter pecan cake for my birthday. Based on the reviews, I figured that I would try it. I also ordered a cake from BJ's as a second cake just in case. Paid 82 bucks for a dry, crumbly cake. The flavors was good and the buttercream was very good. The cake was just very dry. The cake was a nice size. Completely wasted my money. Today October 2nd is Flour Child Bakery's 3rd birthday at their new location in Virginia Beach. Over the last few years our family has enjoyed this small bakery time and time again. Location has been very good for them in the Thoroughgood/Church Point neighborhoods of Bayside. Parking can at times may be an issue, but today was not.. We have been very happy with the quality produced from Flour Child and if a downside exist it is the fact you pay a pretty penny for that goodness. The exterior area of the building is well kept up and clean without debris on the sidewalk. The area includes other stores and on the same side is an alteration shop and the new restaurant Salt. A few customers were in line when I walked in. They offer two cases full of goods. A few tables for those that want to eat inside is an option, but for the most part this is a carry-out place. On this day the cases were full of many of the items I like, but ultimately I had my heart set on one of their specialties, Fresh Apple Cake. You purchase this by the slice and if you ever want a whole cake an advanced order MUST be made. Keep in mind this is a small batch bakery and everything is fresh and made to order. If you want to call the day of to get a cake you will probably be disappointed. The service at the counter was cordial, nothing over the top. If there is one complaint I have is that the women working the cash register never seem to be excited about serving customers in the store. They always seem anxious to get back in the kitchen to make all those wonderful products. I asked for a Fresh Apple Cake warmed up with whip topping for here. A few minutes later that is exactly what I received and it smelled awesome. But it's the taste of this scrumptious cake that has me coming back. The eating area and store was clean as I have come to expect. This small bakery is much more than just an apple cake. They offer cookies, puddings, gluten free products, cake pops and this year sandwiches. A big part of their business is wedding cakes and special event cakes such as birthdays. You will also find them at various Farmer Markets around town, most notably in East Beach, Norfolk. After reading a few of the very poor reviews I would discount both of them. This is a solid local bakery that puts a lot of effort into providing a quality product to their customers every day. The passion shows in the product and I think if you taste their offering you too will find this a great place to come for your baked goods. Just make sure you call ahead people. read more

I left a review on google and told people that they don't use enough butter, sugar, or spices in their Salted Caramel Apple Pies. As a matter of fact I didn't receive any caramel period! They claim to use butter but the pies taste like they have shortening in them instead. After my review they gave a reply which implied I was lying about their product.
