Roger's is a nice local buffet style restaurant. This no frills place offers meats like pulled pork, turkey, fried chicken, popcorn shrimp, as well as a few others. They also have a nice variety of southern style vegetables like cabbage, greens, sweet potato casserole, lima beans, green beans, coleslaw, and corn on the cob. There is also a dessert bar with banana pudding a few different kinds of cobbler you can self serve along with ice cream. I'm not sure if the offerings change or not because I've only been here once so far and I definitely didn't manage to save enough room for dessert. You pay before you sit down and then you can grab a plate and help yourself to whatever you'd like. Tea and water come with the meal but you can order a soda for an additional charge. When we sat down, a super friendly server asked us what we were drinking and brought us a whole pitcher of unsweetened tea for our table. I personally didn't find any of the vegetables to be bland or under seasoned but you won't find anything spicy here. I think they use classic salt and pepper for seasoning but I would be careful if you are vegetarian because I'm fairly sure they use some kind of meat product to cook their veggies. I would also say that their veggies are thoroughly cooked as they normally are with southern style cooking. I wasn't overly impressed with their macaroni and cheese or hush puppies and I thought their pulled pork was too vinegary (admittedly I'm not a fan of Carolina style BBQ) but I did enjoy just about everything else. read more

Rogers BBQ used to serve good food. Today it was awful. The food was very salty. I am not sure if it was done deliberately by an angry employee. Everything was salty. It wasn't just one menu item, but everything was salty. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, please avoid this place. My family used to love this place, now I am beginning to take sides with them and avoid this place. I think I will stick with curbside service and go to Woodstone BBQ. If you are picking up an order, please note it will take about 45 minutes. If they tell you 10-15 minutes do not believe it. Give them about 30-45 minutes. The waiting area for pickup is very small and seemed overcrowded and doesn't seem the safest place during this pandemic. My family and I just moved to Florence and my In laws were in town so we decided to try this place and we were very pleased with this establishment. The staff was very friendly. We did get our food to go since my husband wasn't feeling well. We ordered a chicken and dumplings plate with macaroni and cheese, French fries and sweet potato soufflé. All amazing! Then we got fried chicken plate with green beans, and more macaroni. My mom tried the BBQ and she seemed to like it. The hush puppies weren't what I was expecting. They were small and soggy. I was hoping for a little more crunch and a little more cornbread use. Desserts we tried all 3! They were all fantastic!! Banana pudding by far my favorite. If you're looking for good barbecue, steer clear! Definitely not the place. If you're content with some pretty good fried shrimp and catfish, genuine southern baked mac and cheese, and tasty greens, it's not a bad deal for $13. The barbecue ribs might have been good on Wednesday, but this was Friday, and they had been soaking in bad sauce for literally days. They were close to inedible. The pulled pork didn't taste very smoky and was chopped much too finely. And given the bad sauce, well, add that to the inedible column. This place is a dump. We went here on a Sunday night after reading some reviews. The dressing with turkey was hard. It tasted like leftover turkey from last Thanksgiving. Barbecue was dry. One of the dishes was a mystery for a while until we realized that it was squash casserole. There weren't any labels telling us what the foods were called. The ribs were nice and fried chicken was great. The sweet potato casserole was also good. What grossed me out was that there were a lot of unattended kids at the buffet and they were coughing in to the food. We were afraid of making our second trip up to the buffet. I just moved to Florence and asked some locals where to get some good BBQ and most had said to go here. I will admit that I am spoiled from living in Savannah, but I don't see what the big deal is with this place. The only things good here was the spicy pulled pork and green beans. We were on our way back from the Keys during the coldest January (so far) in Florida Keys history. No swimming, snorkeling, etc. We needed to get the rental vehicle back to the airport in Richmond by that evening, and we were starving. A quick consult with the GPS suggested Rogers, and knowing we had a 5 hour drive still ahead of us, we meandered through town til we found the pig out front... WELL WORTH THE DRIVE. We were all fairly savvy bbq buffet eaters, having eaten our way through Virginia and North Carolina for 30 years. Rogers doesn't look too terribly different or impressive. And not every dish is the best I've had kind good. In pieces: The bbq is good for the style. This is not a heavily smoked meat, probably done with a gas fired pit. But the pork is tasty, and tender. The chopped is the best, lightly vinegary, most and delicious. The pulled on the buffet that day was in a sauce that was spicy...hot. It was very good, not what I expected. Ribs were good, had a thicker and sweeter bbq sauce, not what I expect in South Carolina. And none of the traditional mustard based South Carolina bbq sauces...of course you are just about 30 minutes from South of the Border!! Fried chicken was delicious. Fresh, perfectly cooked, crispy and juicy, just great fried chicken. The sides make Rogers a go-to destination. They are not an afterthought. Several rice dishes blended with chicken, bbq, butter beans, and a scrapple or liver mush kind of blend that makes a sort of dirty rice that tastes a lot better than I described. My favorite among many that day was the mac and cheese and the yellow squash casserole. I could have eaten those with the pork cracklin's and iced tea and still been there for an hour. It isn't the rich smoked bbq of NC with the flavor of the wood permeating everything. But this is one of the best road meals I have eaten in years, and I eat on the road constantly. Rogers has become our happily anticipated lunch stop on our way to the beach. We have taken a vegetarian friend here and she ate splendidly - there is a wide array of vegetable dishes and they are meat free. The mac and cheese is rightly famous. The cooking is traditional. At lunch, the room is full of cheerful people of all kinds - it is a wonderful cross section of Florence society. Mostly we stop because the cooks and staff are sincere about their cooking and happy if you notice how tasty it is. They were so pleased to tell us that everything except the vanilla pudding is made from scratch by them from fresh ingredients - including the breaded okra. We stopped here on our journey from Mass to SC back on 3/27. It was a heck of a deal price wise but not at all what we expected BBQ wise. In our neck of the woods, barbeque means ribs, pulled pork, barbequed chicken, etc. This was a buffet of southern treats, most of which had never been near any kind of a wood fire. There was fried chicken, biscuits, and a whole host of southern favorites, and the price was outrageously low for the quantities, but I'm surprised they called it BBQ. Must be a southern thing. Anyway, it's sort of like eating in a cafeteria. You stop on the way in and pay, then you grab a plate and pile on, then sit anywhere you like. Never, I repeat, never order the squash casserole from here. I cannot stress this enough. It tastes like moldy, worm-infested onions mixed with rotting roadkill that has been festering on the side of a lonely desert road in Arizona for weeks. Very good BBQ, slaw, and sweet potato casserole topped with chopped pecans! Lots more to choose from but the quality isn't as consistent with some side dishes. I wish they get the thinner wide flat chicken dumplings back and old fashioned flat biscuits! They used to have great Mac n cheese and chicken as well so maybe it'll get back like it was soon!
