Location was off the beaten path but the place was an obvious local favorite. The cashier and cook were both exceptionally friendly as were the other patrons I encountered while there. They have a sweetheart of a dog that hangs out and roams the property, she is happy to accept pets or food scraps but doesn't beg and won't steal your food if you get up to grab some more BBQ sauce or use the restroom. Food was amazing! I got the bomb potato based on previous reviews and it was excellent. Seating is outdoor picnic tables so plan to eat in your car or take it to go if the weather isn't cooperating. There was a breeze of 10 to 15 mph while sitting in the shade for lunch with my chopped brisket sandwich and sweet tea. The luck of search "BBQ Near Me" brought me off the highway into this gem in China, TX. Food was delicious. Wish I could have ordered more. Service was quick and excellent. Prices are all good. When one is in Texas, one must have BBQ. This is among the best. The sauce adds flavor to the smoked brisket. Vegetables were fresh and crunchy to provide a great combination of flavor and texture with the brisket and the bun. The location was perfect with the peace, quiet, and tranquility before getting back behind the wheel to finish off a 300 mile driving day. This place was great, the brisket is not the best in the world in tenderness but for the price it's most definitely the best bang for the buck. The bomb potato is to die for. Amazing food. Husband and I have family in the area and EVERY time we come to visit from California we make sure to stop here at least twice per trip. This review is reflective of my last experience there only. I understand inflation but the prices have increased significantly AND the portion sizes are smaller and they have become less generous with their servings of meat. They also seem to have scaled back on their hours of operation which was a big disappointment. If you are open to trying their different sides I don't recommend asking the guy at the window taking your order. Either he likes really bland food, or he just recommends the least selling item to get rid of it because his last two recommendations have been WAY OFF. I'll tell you right now, pick the potato salad (slightly tangy the way I like it, but made with smoked baked potatoes which is unique) over the Mac n cheese (which was way too watery/soupy and bland). We didn't get to try the collard greens but I would definitely get that over the green beans which were also a very bland disappointment. All of that said, their smoked meat is still the best in terms of flavor. The cookies are also pretty good. We still stop there any chance we get for the food and the ambiance. read more

Let me first start with this I am not a fan of baked potatoes with Bar B Q! But this place rocks! My wife and me had their potato Bomb all I can say is WOW it had pulled pork, brisket, and smoked sausage, with cheese green onion and a lot of butter my wife had sour cream on hers also it come with it but I don't like that , getting back to the potato it was very moist not like most that are dry I will drive from Groves to China anytime to eat here it you haven't tried this place you are missing a treat!! nothing fancy just Good Food. read more

We ordered a pound of brisket, brisket boudin, pit beans, pepper jack mac & cheese, chocolate chip cookies, banana pudding, canned sodas, Boerne Original Jalapeño Everyday Sauce, and Hot Rodeo Sauce. Every single thing was delicious. (Well, I didn't eat the sauce. Both are gifts for friends.) The brisket was unbelievably tender. My mom is 84 years old and actually said it was the best meat she has ever eaten. She spent half the meal trying to figure out how they get it that tender and then asked. They cook it for 14 hours. The brisket boudin was fantastic, the pit beans were loaded with flavor, and the pepper jack mac & cheese was every bit as good as everyone says it is. Even the desserts were outstanding. The banana pudding is homemade and disappeared quickly, and Mark devoured the made-on-site chocolate chip cookies. We got there just in time before an afternoon downpour, and while it was busy, it wasn't the chaos some online reviews had led me to expect. Everything was excellent and definitely memorable. The only negative thing I can say has nothing to do with the food and everything to do with online ordering. Skip the online premium. Seriously. Every website suggests to skip the line and absolutely order ahead because it's a MUST. Nope. The prices online were noticeably higher. For example, the Friday half chicken special was $8 online but only $6 in person. The banana pudding was $5 online versus $3.50 in the restaurant. When the line is reasonable, it's simply not worth paying the extra markup. Save your money and order when you get there. Food this good doesn't come around often. If you're in Beaumont, 1701 Barbecue is absolutely worth the stop.

In hindsight I should have (always do) requested light sauce or on the side because all too often (as was the case here) it is sugary and dripping in excess. The pulled pork was 5-stars despite being soaked in bbq sauce. The surprising part was there was easily 1/2 lb of meat between the little round buns. The sausages were equally incredible... homemade and you could tell because the large casings were nearly impossible to bite through but inside was a lightly packed crumble of outstanding meat and spices. We ended up just sliding or squeezing the ground meat out of the two casings. Fortunately, no bbq sauce inside the casing so the meat was able to sing on its own. The lone disappointment were the ribs - there were only 4 and they were not especially warm nor tender. I was expecting fall-off-the-bone and these resembled ribs that had cooked for 2-3 hours but needed another 2 hours to be "done." You order at the window and there's an outdoor/covered picnic-like room about 40 feet away. There is no indoor seating. While flies can get into that open room (no door) it wasn't annoying at this time of year. Parking is easy in their private lot and everything was nicely packaged since every order is essentially to-go.

I followed that with their lemon icebox dessert and a lemon drop, both excellent, and finished the evening with a Four Roses Small Batch Select for a nightcap. What really sets J Wilson's apart is the staff's consistency and professionalism. The bartenders, servers, and kitchen team all seem to work together smoothly and take pride in the experience they deliver. Even on a busy night, with spring break crowds and daylight saving time throwing schedules off, the service remained attentive, and the food came out exactly right. If you're looking for a reliable steakhouse in Beaumont with excellent steaks, a strong bourbon selection, and top-notch service, J Wilson's is hard to beat. Five stars. Always a great experience.

Great barbeque, smoked on a big pit out back. Best buttermilk pie on the planet. Super nice staff. Great outdoor dining place. Pet friendly. Great place to pick up food on the go. I lIke the "King James" sandwich. My wife loves the Wednesday special, Chicken spaghetti and the "The Bomb" baked potato, while our teenage son chooses the burger or pulled pork sandwiches. read more

This rocks!! We love their baked potatoes. Their sausage is so good. Don't forget the burgers. They are thick and juicy.
