I remember shopping with them in the 1980s when LISA BIRNBACH, in her whimsical book THE OFFICIAL PREPPY HANDBOOK labeled JAB "the cheaper, mail order version of Brooks Brothers. Back then, that was a very valid comparison because JAB was a catalog mail only store. Sometime in the 1980s, they started opening stores up and down the East Coast of the USA and I was a happy camper. The traditional conservative suits, blazers and preppy clothing accessories were all available. Over the years, that all changed and started getting worse with each passing decade. They phased out all of the better-quality shoes. They got rid of corduroys in winter. The sweaters offered were no longer from Scotland, but from cheap sweat shops in China and Vietnam. However, JAB really went into the toilet almost immediately after they were purchased by MEN'S WEARHOUSE. The quality, garbage material and cut of the suits mimicked the cheap Italian styled Mafioso styles in the MEN's WEARHOUSE stores and the classic Navy Blue Blazers became dog-sh*t impersonations of what a decent Navy blazer should be. Now to the Denville, NJ store at The Shoppes at UNION HILL. This store is a train wreck and dumpster-fire all rolled into one. They never have standard sizes in Blazers or Suits and the last time I ventured into this store on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, there was just one employee working. After looking at their selection of Navy blazers and asking about a men's 42 Regular, I was told by the sole occupant of the store that he would have to order it. I informed him it was a VERY COMMON size. He just looked at me like I had two heads. I did a quick pass through looking for dress shirts and ALL they had were weird sizes in SLIM cut styling. Now, I'm not a big guy, and in fact, am fairly lean, but SLIM cut shirts are for very young men and the people who can't decide whether they are male, female or non-binary (and yes, I said it, so get over it). Jos. A. Bank used to be a GREAT men's store. Over the last 20 years, it's become a really pathetic excuse for a store grown men would want to shop in. As for the Denville, NJ location? My advice: STAY AWAY!

I got measured up and when I got up to the register I was shocked to see the price. It was double what Men's Warehouse charges (got married recently. I know how much they charge). I thought to myself, ok it's a small shop. I'm sure they make up for it with great customer service, something large corporations can't always do. Fast forward to August. I get a call late Wednesday night to come pick up my tux. I couldn't get there Thursday due to work, so I show up first thing Friday morning. I get handed my suit and get shuffled out the door. I request to try it on and that's where all the problems start. My jacket was like 4 sizes too small. The manager of the store begins his rant about how this is my fault because I didn't come in on Thursday. I tell him he needs to fix it and he said it won't be a problem because there's tons of material in the jacket. I took the rest of my crap suit and went home. I go back the morning of the wedding and "Moe" started looking for my jacket. I try it on and nothing was fixed. Moe confirmed my suspicions and told me it was my fault because I didn't come Thursday (again and again). I go through the wedding with a suit that was pilled and looked like it was dragged behind a pick up truck for a few miles. Of course I had to wear my tiny ass jacket that I couldn't button. I looked like Chris Farley wearing David Spade's jacket in Tommy Boy. Oh and on top of everything else, my shoes were two different sizes. Not shoe sizes, physical dimensions. One was about 3/4" too small. When I returned this sad excuse for a suit, I asked for a refund because services were not provided and I pretty much got told to go fuck myself. The manager walked out of the store right in the middle of a conversation. I spoke to the owner (I think?) and he said we would be getting an insulting amount of money back (which hasn't happened yet a week and half later) and they don't automatically give you back your deposit. How many people are they scamming for 40 bucks because they don't know better. Stay away and just go to Men's Warehouse. They have more resources and they give you a lot more time to make sure your suit or tux is right. These guys are just assholes. Plain and simple.

Our goal was to create custom cowboy hats for another trip coming up. We came in with inspo pics and a good idea of what we wanted. My friend was able to make a beautiful hat, unfortunately they did not have my size hat in my preferred color. They have a lot of nice embellishments and options to design them, but they said they run out of things quickly so it's definitely hit or miss. If you have a specific design idea in mind, I'd HIGHLY recommend calling and confirming availability first so you don't go home empty handed like I did. I told them it was broke and still had the tag on it and they would not work with me at all bc it was past the exchange date (no returns allowed) even tho it was unworn with the tag....Horrible return policy and horrible quality! I'm sure other items have better quality but after my experience I will not be returning. I was excited for the store when I first walked in but it was a huge disappointment.

Walking into a centuries-old barn with books stacked from floor to ceiling feels like stepping into another era. Prices are incredibly reasonable, and if you wander all the way to the back, you'll discover a clothing shop and a room full of housewares. I found shelves of delicate china and vintage dinnerware at prices that made me do a double take. My only real complaint is that Saturday mornings are busy. Because everything is donated, this isn't the place to hunt for the newest bestseller. It's where you come for the experience, the possibility of stumbling across something unexpected, and the thrill of finding a great deal on a forgotten gem. I have a feeling this place is going to be even more magical in the fall. I'll definitely be back.

The last time I bought a pair of jeans, Bill Clinton was a big deal at McDonalds. Well, maybe not that far back but still, my point is that I hardly ever like to go clothes shopping. We were going to go to the Outlets but wound up here in Denville instead. Reluctantly, I picked out a bunch of different jeans and tried them on. I found two pair that fit comfortably and felt like they were mine before we bought them. Score. The selection of clothes at this particular GAP is ... really, you're asking the wrong guy. How the hell would I know? I guess it's good. I mean, it's better than the selection of clothes at Walmart. Wait, is it? Well I definitely know it's more expensive. Wait, is it? They had a 30% off sale on almost everything in the store this past weekend. That was cool. But then, for some reason, the cashier was feeling awesome and gave us a total of 40% off. Wow. But wait... my fiancée's GAP card had expired. Oh no! No problem, she opened a new one there on the spot and guess what? We got an additional 15% off. So, for those of you keeping score at home... that's a total of 55% off our entire purchase! Wowie zowie! The cashier was hella friendly and when all was said and done, she ended up basically just handing us over $100 in savings. And I gots me some new jeans, son. Whut whut?
