This is my regular place, I like the quality, and short lines. In most cases there is no line unless you come right before closing. I pay $23 for a professional haircut which includes shampoo and I believe this is the best price around in the midtown. read more

This place is quick, that's for sure. But they might charge you something different every time you go. I've been there three times, and I will not be going back. My hair is pretty simple. It's a crew cut. I've had the same haircut for 9 years. This place has three main hair stylists, and I've been to all of them. The first time I went, it was quick and easy, I got exactly what I wanted, and it was no problem. When it was over, I looked at the price board and expected to pay $19, but I was told "crew cut, $13." Great! Quick, easy, and cheap, I'll come back. The second time, I had someone different, and I was charged $19. I was confused and explained what happened last time. This one insisted that I was charged the wrong amount and charged me $19 for a "regular cut." I gave them the benefit of the doubt and decided to come back again. The third time, I had someone different, but the other two I had were in the room cutting others' hair. At the end of the cut, this one started taking the robe off before she even asked if I was happy with it. I politely asked her to make it shorter higher on the sides. She began to argue with me. I was thinking, "I've had this cut for 9 years, and she wants to tell me what I want???" She ended up cutting it how I wanted, and I was happy. This time, I was charged $21. I looked at the price board, and it had not changed. Confused, again, I explained what I was charged the last two times. The three of them spoke to each other and said they had made a mistake, "This is 'military cut.' $21." I just can't respect a place who wants to charge me something different every time I go. If I go back, I imagine they'll charge me $25-$30 and claim they gave me non-existent highlights. read more

This place is very close to where I work, and I was psyched to have discovered it. The first few times I went I was shorn by one of the two ladies I've seen in there. Both times the cut was good; they listened to what I wanted and I walked out happy. The 3rd time I went in both ladies were busy so the guy with the very short hair and goatee (who seems like the owner) got up and motioned for me to take a seat. I figured I'd get another cheap, great cut. However, he was clipper-happy, ignored my pleas and gave me a rounded too-short cut (in record time). I was somewhat dismayed and haven't gone back for fear that he'd be the only one available. My brother works close by as well and when I mentioned this story he said he had a similar experience and stopped going back as well! Too bad; the folks are nice enough. Moral of the story; never get a haircut from a guy with an almost-shaved head! read more

Roma's is decent but not one of the best cuts in nyc. As discussed it is tucekd away in the subway station of the 1 local train. It is located on the sourthern most exit on the downtown side. If your looking to get in and out fast they are the place to go. As others have mentioned they wash your hair which is a decent perk you rarely see. Typical manhattan prices for a typical cut. If you work by here and need a quick cut go for it, otherwise do not go out of your way. read more

So I went in and was assigned to a lady and said, "Just a trim." I should have known something was about to go wrong when she stuck my legs into her wellington boots and in a thick eastern-block accent said, "Li-tle lamb now mine," then the shears came out. At least I got away with my eyebrows. She did wash my hair before and after the cut... for what it's worth. $21 + tip. The tip was knowing I would not be back.. I initially gave them 2 stars, but I have to say, my hair grew in okay and I will give them another shot at it. read more

I would not suggest this place to anyone. I asked for a haircut (2) and simply a line up of the edge of my hair. The barber lacks experience. Another barber came over to "assist" and while he did a better job than the first barber, it was still subpar. I asked them to take the hairline across. Not curved. However, the barber could not do that. The first barber screwed up the progress of the second barber. Then a third barber comes over, suggests Washing my hair, attempts to make a straight line, fails miserably, and gives up. The first barber asks if it is better and then looks at it and sees the disappointment on my face and the butchered hairline. At this point, I am trying to save my haircut. As I contemplate on how to fix it other than going bald, the second barber returns and makes a statement. "This is a barbershop, not a beauty salon" I did not know how to even respond. He then takes the clippers, touches my hairline and says ok. Done. Squeezes my shoulders and ask "Ready to pay now?" And walks away. Forget the haircut. What kind of piss poor customer service is that? I pay for the haircut, tip the first barber for her efforts and walk out while shaking my head. Still in disbelief. We never even made it to shaping up my facial hair. read more

I didn't have to wait at all to get seated so thats why they get the one star. This was the worst haircut I've ever had in new york city. I asked for them to trim a bit off the sides and leave to top long and 30 seconds later I looked like i was ready for the army. Been going here for 5 years, since my business moved nearby. It's a great local barber shop. Fast, convenient, and cheap. The staff is profesional, courteous, and friendly,. Almsot always have 4 people working, so they're fast. For under $20, they'll shampoo, wash and cut your hair. There's also a shoe shine inside, so can shine your shoes, while you wait. But I've never spent more than half hour there, even during busy lunch time. The Subway 1 Line eetrance is next to Duane Reade, on the south side of West 50th Street. I have been going here for a year now and never had any problems. They do exactly what I tell them to do and I get the same haircut as at the overpriced trendy places. Roma's is the best. It's a bit hidden, which adds to the allure of anything great in New York. To get to it you have to go down the stairs into the 50th St. 2 3 train station and the barber shop is on your way down the stairs. If your not from NY this may seem odd to you, but we have our barbershops in the subway stations. Anyway the staff there is great, I've received cuts from a couple different barbers there. I was passing by and thought I'd give this place a shot since it was pouring outside and I had some free time. I showed the stylist two pictures that were very similar (shorter on the sides and some length on the top - a pretty standard cut these days). She looked at the photos and seemed confident that she knew how to execute it. She began using multiple trimmers and the sides were looking great; exactly what I wanted. Then without warning she began using the trimmers on the top of my head (the part that was supposed to be longer). By the time she was done, I had a super short cut that wasn't very flattering at all and looked NOTHING like the photo I showed her. I said, "it's kind of short isn't it?" and I showed her the photo again. I said, "this is much shorter than the picture, right?" She said, "No. It's much better than what it was before. Thank you," and then waited for me to get out of the chair and proceeded to go about her business. By then there was nothing I could do. Then I stood there looking for someone to pay and finally a guy came up and pressed some buttons on the cash register and then waited and never said anything to me as he stared off into the distance. Finally after me hinting that I needed to know the price, he told me. Needless to say, I won't be returning due to the lack of customer service and the failed haircut attempt. read more

When I first moved to NYC, I looked for a place similar to SuperCuts in Manhattan where for $15 I could get just a nice trim. This came up on Yelp and people seemed to think it was a fine place for a men's haircut. I went in once and asked for my hair to be cleaned up but still long. The woman cutting it made it a lot shorter than I envisioned but I figured, a bad cut at Supercuts was about equally as good as what I had found and maybe it's my only option in NYC. A few months passed by and my hair was getting a little thicker than I'd like -- I wanted to keep the shape but thin out the bulk. So I went in again and another woman was assigned to cut my hair. She was very cold and unfriendly regardless of how I tried to engage her. Immediately after sitting down, I said "I don't want to cut it very short; I want to keep the length but just thin it out." She nodded and immediately took an electronic razor and shaved the left side of my head. I was shocked because now one side of my head was buzzed and I had to let her continue to see how it would even out. She proceeded to buzz my entire head and I figured, "Okay, I can live with this." She must have seen my content because she then went back a second time and thinned it out even more. I literally looked like I was enlisting in the army -- this after I said, immediately after sitting down, that I wanted to keep my hair long. I am a nice guy and didn't want to make her feel bad so I thanked her and then went to pay. The guy had seen me when I first sat down and upon seeing me now, turned to the woman and spoke in Russian, along the tone of "What did you do to him?" She muttered something back defensively. I smiled and paid the $15 plus a $5 tip because I didn't want to seem like a brat who was complaining about his hair. Then I walked home and realized I had gone from my hair a bit too shaggy to being almost completely bald. I was so self-conscious, I had to cancel all the meetings I had planned for about six weeks until my hair grew back enough for me to be recognizable. It took me four and a half months before my hair grew back to its normal state and I was terrified to get a haircut again. Fortunately, I went back to Yelp and discovered Dickson Hairshop which was $45, more than I ever thought I'd need to pay. Long story short, I am now back in California and still paying $30-40 for a haircut... I used to think it didn't matter when you are a guy since the result is almost always similar but Roma's Barber Shop taught me, it does. Supercuts might have been hit-or-miss but if a $15 barber just ignores what you ask for and buzzes your head (and several other reviews point out the same problem), then they should not be in business. I literally would get angry every time i walked by the 50th/C subway station. I am glad I am finally writing this review. read more
