Paulette is a genius, a gem hidden in the jungles of New York City. She is a miracle with hair. I have short hair and she hooks me up every time I go to her. And you cannot beat the prices at all. I was surprised at how little I had to pay for an excellent hairstyle. I always think salons in Manhattan are just expensive because the location is Manhattan. The atmosphere is great. The people are friendly and if you go there certain times, you might spot a few celebrities going in and out of this cozy little location. I passed it many times before actually realizing it was there. This is also a unisex salon. The men are very welcome with some excellent barbers. All hair types welcome. Ok, let's be frank. My head is a nightmare. The interior aside, the hair is at best problematic, at worst terrifying. She has seen everything that the tempest atop my head will throw at her. The seasonally reversing swirl, the inexplicable bald spot on the side, the prominent occipital bun. She has been the most consistent woman in my life for nigh on a decade. Sure, I'll admit that I've strayed once or twice. Out of town on business, too much to drink in a hotel bar, and I've been known to pay a visit to some cheap tramp with a pair of scissors and a come hither smile. With predictable results. Each time, I've returned chagrined, and Amy has had the grace to forgive my weakness and fix whatever damage has been wrought. But through circumstance beyond our control, Amy and I have had to go our separate ways. I moved to New York, and despite my pleadings, she stayed behind. I refrained from getting a haircut for far too long since our parting. Sitting shiva with my head. I decided that it was time to get on with my life. It took me an extra few weeks to drum up the courage. New city, new life, new haircut. I turned to Yelp. Rose suggested Sassy Fashion, and I decided to give it a try. I felt like a widower going out on his first blind date. Paulette was busy, but Louie took me well in hand. He was sensitive to my needs, understanding of my situation. He went to work. A whirl of clippers, the snicker snack of scissors, and I was squirming like a bag full of pythons. Then, with a tenderness known only to hairdressers, battlefield medics, and men of the cloth, he suggested that for the last nine years Amy had been doing everything wrong. I almost stood up and walked out. It's bad enough that I'm cheating on the memory of my dead spouse, but do you have to tell me that she wasn't any good in the sack? Only the scissors in his hand and his cool professional demeanor kept me seated in the chair. I looked him in the eye and said the fateful words: "Fine. Do it your way." Half an hour later, as he was putting the finishing touches on my brand new coif, I realized that he was right. For the last nine years, my head looked like the love-child of Elvis, Ted Koppel, and Foghorn Leghorn. Now it looked like a gay investment banker. I'm neither, but I felt as though I could finally throw off the black veil and go about my brand new life. Thank you, Louie. And he only charged me $21 to boot. Of course, the real verdict will be delivered tonight by my friend Caroline, the judge of all such things. I'll let you know how my hair performs. UPDATE: Caroline has judged the haircut to be "just fine" bordering on "great". We both concluded that it did exacerbate a pre-existing resemblance to Tintin, but as long as I avoid hanging out with gruff sailors or fuzzy white dogs, I should be all good. If I were to rate the haircut alone, I'd give it a 3.5 star rating. I probably wouldn't "yelp" about it. However, my overall experience at this place was more like 4.5 stars. Let me press rewind...I graduated from school in Boston. I had my number 1 "hairstylist," up there (who I found on yelp as well). Freddy Luk in Boston @ Zen Hair, consistently gave me the best haircuts I've ever gotten. To catch up, new city, new hairstylist... So I consulted Yelp! Reviews for Sassy Fashion were fairly reasonable so I gave it a shot (not too expensive and they do a good job). I would agree that this is a pretty good value. Was it the best haircut I've ever gotten? No. The price was reasonable and the haircut was good. Louis made the experience 10x more enjoyable, as he was extremely personable. I think the most important part of this whole process is the dialog between the stylist and patron with regards to the desired effect. Louis did a good job in this department, the execution was a bit lacking. For $22, I would have to say it can't be beat. I miss Freddy in Boston, but I will come back here again. P.S. I find it extremely awkward when a hairstylist/barber will reach onto their workstation and slap down any number of "male" magazines in front of you. With Louis it was Maxim this time, and in the past I've been handed Playboys from various barbers. The people cutting my hair, don't say anything and it's an awkward silence. Less than a year ago, I was a southern, frat boy punk. Last Tuesday, I got my hair cut at Sassy Fashion mid-day to prepare for drinks with clients. Don't let anyone ever tell you that 8 months can't turn anyone into a loser. But honestly, despite the having the best Yelp reviews of any mid-town place, I was skeptical of Sassy Fashion. When I got there, Louie asked me if I wanted a wash before or after. I told him I didn't need one because I literally just showered. Apparently this logic fell on deaf ears. I shrugged, Louie won, I got a wash before. I think the hairs on my head were going, 'Oh c'mon. Are you for real? You just drowned us 15 minutes prior!' Afterward came the part I really hate - where whoever is cutting my hair asks something to the effect of 'Well, what do you want me to do?' And every, single time, all I want to reply is: 'Well, you're the expert. Shouldn't you decide?' Whatever happened to law of comparative advantage? Anyway, I explained my policy which essentially is 'please make it shorter and don't eff it up.' Despite my dearth of instructions regarding my own hair, Louie did a magnificent job. He was also from Puerto Rico, where I will be vacationing in 23 long days, and was able to give me some recommendations of things to do. And this moment, is where it dawned on me that I was in NY and not SF. A stylist in SF who was from Puerto Rico would have told me a million things that I must see in Puerto Rico. I decided to give this place a try after reading crazy-enthustiastic Yelp reviews (see below). My first time there, I was assigned to Louie, who did a great job. He was very meticulous, spent a lot of time on my hair and only charged me $22. Good deal. So I went back, and the second time I had an older lady who basically tossed me into a chair and did her thing. Which is totally cool, sometimes. If I'm paying $100 or something for a haircut, I expect the expert to know better than me how to make my hair look good. Anyway, she never asked for my input and seemed to have ideas of her own. And I was curious to see what she'd come up with, so I just let her do her thing. Bad idea. She cut it really short and kinda gave my hair a New Jersey look (you know, where you slick it down and then just spike the very front?). And it doesn't look very even to me, but she insisted that it was. It's not a big deal--it was a $20 cut and my hair will grow back in a week or two--but next time I go back I'm definitely going to ask for Louie. read more

So after living in the city for 2 months, I decided I really needed to venture out and get a haircut. No idea where to go though, which is why I had been putting it off. I stumbled across Gabriel's review, and since there was a good overall rating figured it was worth a shot. I called Saturday morning and they had something that afternoon with Louie. On my way there the local train decided to skip 3 stops so I ended up running a little late, but apparently Louie was a little behind too (busy morning and only 2 people working) so it worked out well. Louie pretty much new exactly what I was looking for before I said anything (even knew what # clipper I usually use on the sides). Cut was great. Atmosphere was friendly. In an emergency I ran to this salon and was INCREDIBLY dissapointed in my haircut. Yes, it was cheap. But come on?! Never again, I'd rather pay more and get a decent haircut. Only go there if you trust the person cutting your hair. The woman who cut mine, Lydia I think, didn't listen to what I wanted and did her own thing. At one point I said, "you're cutting too much off" and she replied, "its better this way." Really? After the haircut was finished I was pissed off and angry. Never again. read more

Not only did I great a great cut (tons of compliments from my critical friends/girlfriend), but the ambiance in this place was warm, welcoming and fun. Waited about 10 mins for Louis, and chatted with the other patrons and stylists from the time I sat down through my cut. Really great spot through and through! read more
