    Hilton garden inn NYC

I stayed here during a trip to New York for 2 days and it was good. The room itself is clean, good view from the windows, and other amenities such as a gym. Close to Times Square by walk and close to okay restaurants, but you need to venture out more for better restaurants. Very basic, simple hotel and since I spent most of the day out, it was fine for me. I would stay here again. Overall, this place is good.

I'm changing this review because of how horrible their customer service has been since I've left the hotel. Due to their restaurant being closed, they were automatically giving Diamond members the 750 bonus points instead. The points did not appear for several days after I left and after countless calls to their front desk manager I got absolutely nowhere. Each time I called, Mariana said she would get it done and go from there and it's been close to 3 weeks since I left. On my last call today she said she'd get it done in 10 minutes because she had to deal with another guest instead that took priority over me. Uh, okay, so not only was that incredibly rude to say on the phone but why did you answer the phone if you couldn't complete my request? Especially when she said sorry this issue is not a priority compared to this emergency and then put me on hold because she'd get in more trouble if she hung up on me... I have zero faith that this hotel will add the 750 points and with every person I've had to work with they've all given the same rude attitude. Just because they're merely an HGI hotel doesn't mean they don't have an expectation of providing ANY level of good customer service. If you're looking for below average rooms with absolutely horrible customer service, then book here. If you expect to be treated with any human decency and respect, you'd best take your money elsewhere because Mariana and her team surely won't give you that.

This property is conveniently located between 5th avenue and time square. It's walking distance to everything and a 10 minute walk to Grand Central station. The rooms are small, but enough. The AC is super cold which was great!! The staff wasn't very welcoming. There is a restaurant onsite which is also convenient. Overall it's a good hotel for the price compared to the others around and like I said, you can't beat its location.

"Could have been better" would summarize my three night stay and so this review is a little longer than usual to explain the two star rating. Arrived Thursday evening after checking in online and picking my room through the Hilton app. This is the big tip you need to know because my friend who checked in a few hours ahead of me at the desk and who is also a Diamond in the Hilton program, was assigned a room on the 6th floor. Because I used the app, I got 12th floor (and could have chosen 14th but the only available room was in front of the elevator and I avoid that for noise). The young man who checked me in (I could have bypassed the counter but I like having a key card) was very pleasant and friendly. I enjoyed my interaction at the desk. The room was adequate. The surfaces were clean and the bed was comfortable. The wifi worked well and the windows opened enough that I could get some fresh air and a little sound of Manhattan. When the windows were closed and with the curtains closed, it was quiet and dark. Housekeeping is not cleaning rooms during stays right now because of COVID and that's perfectly okay for me. Here's what knocked them down to two stars. - Security is a thing for me. The door lock was loose and one of the screws was missing. I'm glad that I brought my external lock as I would otherwise have switched rooms. - The noise through the connecting door was annoying. I had no hallway noise and no street noise but hearing people talking in the next room or hearing the dude clearing his throat through the bathroom vent reminded me that I am not in a fine hotel. And dude, get those lungs looked at! That can't be healthy! - Just before I turned off the lights, I noticed the black mess on the grill of the air conditioning vent. Am I breathing this in? - Still no breakfast and no credit. The Hampton two blocks over is serving so why can't you? - The carpet did not feel clean. Thankfully, I had slippers so my bare feet never stepped on it. But ick! The price was decent at $145 a night. The location is great only two blocks from Times Square and two blocks from the 50th Street C/E station. But for my next trip to New York, I would pick another hotel. Note: I am a Hilton Diamond and I have 16 nights so far in 2021 across 7 HGIs or Hamptons and over 160 Yelps of Hilton properties in a dozen countries: https://www.yelp.com/collection/eAMN-dsXYE_JjkcSLkQUoA. So to summarize the bad things, bad door lock, dirty AC vent, noise from neighbors, no breakfast, squishy carpet. The good stuff, great location, good bed, good wifi, decent price. The *only* reason this place gets 2 stars is because the room is clean and not a closet... but wow. I decided to stay in the city 2 days instead of 1, so I tried to extend my reservation by phone. At about 3am (I understand it's 3am, but hotels are 24 hours, act like it) I was put on hold for literally 30 mins before I gave up. Wake up this morning, try again to extend my reservation, they sent me to 3 different people, and then tell me I need to go through Hotels Tonight that I booked with to extend. Ok that's fine, but why did it take 3 transfers to tell me that? I am literally trying to give this hotel money and they just lost a whole booking because of their horrible customer service. I forgot a toothbrush so I called the front desk to bring one up. No knock on the door. Nothing to indicate they left it it just got put on the door handle. I feel like I've been made out to be some low life customer when in reality, I would've gladly continued my stay and never once did I have a face to face issue with anyone, they just downright have horrible customer service. If I can avoid this hotel in the future, I will. I'm staying across the street at the Gallivant tonight instead.

2nd hotel during our 1 week stay, we like to experience different parts of town. This hotel is older but more centrally located. The mattress was soft, pillows soft & comfy. The fabric chaise lounge chair was a nice touch. Room was more spacious than we expected for such a central location. Our king room (1030) directly faced 8th Av so it can be noisy, not to mention there is a fire station next door. The windows alone were insufficient to keep out the noise during the day, at night we usually slept ok unless the fire engines spring to action. We choose a room near the end of the hallway to minimize other noise. Furnitures were a bit worn, the sliding cabinet door beneath the TV was already broken at check in. We notified the operator in case we were charged, they offered to send "engineers" for repair but we declined. Other amenities included Keurig, microwave, fridge, even an old fashion safety box that uses actual key instead of combination, just don't lose that key! Bathroom was adequate: vinyl countertop and bathtub, cheap body wash/shampoo. They gave us vouchers at check in, we used it to claim 2 bottles of water daily at the lobby gift shop. Elevators were cramped & SD was non-existing, at one point I counted 8 peeps packed into the tiny space. Some of the maintenance/construction crew flaunted openly without masks in the hallway & in elevators. There were usually 1-2 staff at the entrance to prevent trespassers, you will encounter homeless/alcoholics wondering or lying on the street, but not nearly as bad as SF. Overall the hotel was adequate, we used its central location to explore food scenes jn the Hell's Kitchen area. The staff were very professional & courteous, none of the deficiencies were of human in nature.

I had the most lovely stay at the Hilton Garden Inn on Times Square. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Checkin and out were efficient and they got me in early. My room was clean and very spacious as was the bathroom. Will definitely return.

On a business trip and was booked for this low-budget and but arill reputable hotel. The room was passable but the bathroom had an old moist mildew smell that was awful. I could've ignored all that, but the customer service was non-existent. Not only did check in take 30 minutes due to their ineptitude, but they "accidentally" put our check out a day too early. We had proof of our payment for 4 days, but after 3 days they said "oh our bad, but we are sold out, so you gotta go, even though you booked this room for 4 days". All of this as we were leaving the hotel to go present at a conference. Do yourself a favor, and book the Hilton Midtown on Avenue of the Americaa.

Stayed here for a few nights over the holidays and it was a great experience! Booked indirect for a Deluxe room and the room was facing 8th Ave. (The alternate seems to be facing the wall...) Check-in was quick, with a small $200 deposit for incidentals. The room was ~300+ sq ft which was huge for NYC standards. Despite facing 8th Ave and merely on the 6th floor, the room did have sufficient soundproofing! The mattress and sheets were comfortable. The TV was new with plenty of channels. The shower had quick hot water with excellent water pressure. WiFi was free and the room featured a mini fridge and mini microwave! There is also a keyed in-room safe for valuables too! There is a convenience store in the lobby along with food...or there is a grocery store across the street!

Stayed here for 2 nights while on a business trip. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would consider staying here again. It wasn't perfect, but the pros far outweighed the cons. Pros: Excellent location - 5-10 minute walk from Times Square. 10 minute walk from Rockefeller Square. Plenty of restaurants, bars, sights to see around the area. You don't stay at this hotel for luxury, you stay here due to the location. Friendly Service - check-in was efficient. They have security checking room keys at the entrance. The security guards did a good job and made sure the inside and perimeter of the hotel was safe at all times. TV - had about 5-6 movie channels. There's a store inside that sells some snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. Wasn't terribly expensive but it's convenient that it's inside the hotel. There's a Rite and CVS a block away. Cons: Older hotel. The bathroom sink was renovated but everything else in the room felt a bit outdated. However, the bed was comfortable enough to get a decent sleep. Noise - due to the proximity to Times Square, it is rather noisy outside. The room came with earbuds so that was a really nice touch. Showerhead was old and the drain clogged easily. No complimentary breakfast but there is a café inside selling some breakfast goods and coffee. The only form of payment they accept is charge back to the room (no cash or card). Tips: For snacks and drinks, go to CVS or Rite Aid which are a block away. For coffee, there's a good place right around the corner called Masseria Café&Bakery. For Uber/Lyft, pin the hotel name and the drivers will pick up right up in front on 8th St.

Plastic bag on the smoke detector
    Natalie S.

This hotel is a glorified motel. I'm disgusted with the room I was given. For $599, it looks like a motel. The bathroom was dirty, there was a plastic bag over the smoke alarm so clearly people were smoking before we got there, and the front desk staff is rude. There is barely any light in the room, our view is of a construction site, there is nothing good to say about our experience. Also the toiletries in the bathroom are as bad as what you'd get in prison. The tiniest piece of soap I've ever seen. Stay away!

    Scaffolding outside
    Fred L.

I am typically generous when it comes to my Yelp ratings and reviews so when I give a low rating I have strong reasons. On a recent trip to NYC my family stayed at this Hilton Garden Inn. They were doing construction on the hotel and there is scaffolding in front of the hotel. From the outside you barely notice that the hotel is there. The view from our window was obstructed and almost felt like you were in jail. Unlike a lot of Hilton properties they don't have the digital key where you can unlock the door with your phone. There was an event going on at a club across the street and there was a lot of noise going into the night. I grew up in NYC so I am used to a certain amount of noise but this was more than the family and I could handle. Our room had a moldy wet smell. We called the front desk about it when we arrived and then went out for a few hours. When we returned there was no indication that anything was done. When I called again I was told that the manager was coming up. The manager did not come but a very nice lady did come from housekeeping (I think). She noticed the smell and then wanted to spray "something" in the room. I am note sure if it was Febreze or something else. I stopped her and basically shared that I wanted a new room. After being told that that was not an option since the hotel was sold out, my wife and I went online and booked a new hotel for the remainder of our stay. The room itself was fine, minus the smell and scaffolding. There were two people at the front desk that I was complaining to who were very nice but I just got the feeling that there was nothing that they could do or was willing to do. When I told the front desk the next day that we would be checking out early I got a very unconcerned "whatever" response (there were new people at the front desk the next day). So based on this experience I would not recommend this hotel.

Wax on the bedspread and floor.
    Shannon B.

When I checked into my room, there was a sticker seal on the door assuring me that it had been cleaned to Covid-preventing standards communicated in their policy. When I went in the room, one of the bedspreads had a sticky spot and hardened wax dripping down the side, on to the carpet. So gross. I called the front desk and they gave me another room. When I was 19, I worked at a hotel. The manager told me to fix issues but never offer any discount, refund or upgrade unless the person makes a huge fuss. I refuse to throw a tantrum and certainly don't blame the front desk staff for the quality of the room. But there is a literal deadly virus right now and the cleanliness of the room should be the highest priority. It was clear the room hadn't been cleaned and I had to switch rooms after a full day of travel and a nearly midnight check-in. Good customer service would be to offer a discount, refund, or upgrade as an apology for a disgusting inconvenience and quite frankly, a health risk. Very disappointed that the Hilton can't be trusted to clean their rooms and additionally disappointed that they don't offer compensation for the health risk. (Still gave 3 stars because the staff were very friendly and I imagine Covid had created a lot of stress for their job.)

I stayed at this hotel over the New Years holiday and was thrilled to be so close to Madison Square Garden and Times Square. As was expected, check in was a bit chaotic given the time of year. The ground floor entrance was PACKED with luggage on first arrival. After weaving our way through, we located the check-in desk on the 5th or 6th floor. Tons of people but adequate seating to wait for our room to be ready. An upper floor meant having to figure out their dreaded elevator system. It left something to be desired, to say the least. With only 3 elevators that service the whole of the hotel, and a 4th that goes who knows where, it was almost always a lengthy struggle to catch one. No buttons on the interior of the carriage, all elevators were called with a touchscreen device that seemingly tried to pack as many people as possible into one small space, leaving many behind that couldn't fit, before directing the passengers to another elevator to repeat the whole process over again. One day was so bad, it was actually preferable to walk up the stairs to the 14th floor. Woof. The room itself was wonderful. Spacious, with 2 beds. Very clean. Beautiful view of the city and the arena next door. Great way to catch the sun set. Walk in shower with both an overhead and handheld shower attachment. Great lighting. Shower had heavily frosted glass that faced the bedroom area so be prepared for your silhouette to be on full display for anyone you may be rooming with. Nice sized closet, safe, and mini fridge. Big flat screen television. Window shade worked very well to block out the light if you're hoping to sleep in late. Walls can be a bit thin, especially if you have a rowdy bunch of kids right next door as we did. Aside from the elevators, the perks far outweighed the usual peskier elements (e.g., noise, etc.) one encounters when staying away from home. Would stay here again, perhaps during a less busy time of year, if that's even possible.

Every interaction was warm, thoughtful, and genuinely welcoming. The themed rooms are such a fun touch (I loved seeing how each one was inspired by a different subject), but I also have to give a shout-out to the practical things. I took a few work video calls from my room on the 12th floor, and the Wi-Fi was ridiculously good - honestly stronger than the Wi-Fi in my own house when I'm sitting five feet from the modem. Not a second of lag. The TV also had a ton of premium channels, which was such a fun surprise after long days exploring the city. And finally, a standing ovation for the real MVP: the air conditioning. New York was basically a sauna while I was there, and every time I walked back into my room I was greeted by the most glorious arctic blast. It was so good that my friends ended up wanting to hang out in my room and order dinner instead of going back out into the heat. Perfect stay from beginning to end. I can't wait to come back.

I was excited to stay here anyway, because of course it was on my bucket list, but the stay was so…read morequiet and lovely that I am blown away. I got a petite room since I was traveling alone which I would not recommend for a couple, but for me it was perfect. The bathroom area was the best part and not at all an afterthought. They knew women would be coming and they nailed it, down to the magnifying mirror. Whenever you get to spend time with other book lovers, it's a plus, so I also very much loved being able to talk to people in the common room on the 2nd floor. Often times NYC misses this in their hotels. The books here aren't anything you really want to read so bring your own books but all in all 5+ stars for me!

This is a bustling hotel with a large lobby. I visited for a conference. The hotel has a couple of…read moreexits, but the main entrance is on 6th avenue. All the meeting rooms were clean and organized. We had over 1,000 conference attendees and needed ample space and everything went pretty smoothly. Temperature control was generally good, but got a tiny bit chilly at certain points of the day. The staff were extremely prompt with setting up and removing catering food, but were not the friendliest. They have a free standing pumping station for those that need it. It was easy to access and decently clean, but could've used a wipe down by the second day. They provided a mini fridge in one of the meeting rooms for storage.

AVOID AVOID AVOID! DO NOT BOOK HERE!…read more I came here around April for a work trip and no where on the reservation page did it say that the hotel was under construction. They also offered the price including breakfast. Arrived at the hotel and saw that they only had one working elevator for a hotel that was over 20 floors high. There was a line for the elevator that you had to wait for at least 20 minutes to take. I asked the about the breakfast and they said the restaurant was closed so no hot breakfast. Why is this hotel offering a room rate price with breakfast when there is no restaurant for breakfast?! They told me they had bagged breakfast, which was always gone and coffee was all gone too. Took over 10 minutes to wait for new coffee to arrive. Renovation work bright and early at 8am. I was offered loyalty points for compensation by the manager, Delanie, and these points never showed up. I was also mistakenly charged for drinking their water bottles when I didn't even touch those bottles. They never even told me that I was going to be charged after checking out. I just saw a random extra charge on my credit card. The manager, Delanie, had said this would be refunded, but never saw this refund come through just like the loyalty points.
