I walked into this store a few days before Christmas and was lucky enough to meet Cathleen Q. Cathleen patiently listened to me, understood what I needed and what styles/colors I liked--and has help me put together several great rooms. The furniture is well made, timeless and unique. The company stands behind its products and has been fantastic when I needed to exchange an item. Every associate I've encountered has been very helpful. Prices are very reasonable for the level of quality of the pieces and the high level of service you receive. Delivery is a breeze, and their drivers set up/assemble and place the pieces where you want them to go. And it's always fun to visit the store--it's huge for downtown Chicago. If I could afford to outfit my entire house in this stuff, I would, without question. The people who work there aren't on commission, so they're not trying to ram a purchase down your throat. And they're not fighting over who gets to take care of a customer, either. It's a very easygoing atmosphere, full of really nice, quality furniture that won't be going out of style any time soon. When I bought my dresser there, they were polite, enthusiastic, and really really prompt on their delivery. As an added bonus, the delivery guys were ADORABLE and witty. Hooray! I wish I could afford to buy more stuff from here, but when I can, I'll certainly be back. Edited to add: At some point, I was feeling wealthy, so I bought the matching nightstand to my dresser. Unfortunately, my dumb ass bought it in the WRONG COLOR. Room and Board is a fantastic modern styled furniture store. The spacious three floors of a large selection of furniture for most every room in the house/condo/apartment. The exception being one's kitchen. Most of the furniture have leather hides but does offer some models with other materials. The sofas and chairs as well as Ottomans seem well-built. Tables, nightstands and magazine racks often are made from various metals. I have never purchased furniture from the store but have always been pleased by their offerings of accessories. Some of the accessories are priced on the high--end but there are also many violent priced offerings. The customer service has always been great. I can't gush enough about the customer service at this location, and also the pickup/delivery teams. I had a sofa that needed repairs twice, even after several years, they eagerly honored their satisfaction guarantee without a blink or hesitation. Because of a product defect it never was comfortable, and after mentioning it to an employee on a return visit, they suggested that I return it. I had never considered it as an option. They made the return easy and and gave me a more than fair refund (minus wear and tear). And the credit happened in days... not weeks. I wish all corporations would standby their products like this, and empower their employees to provide excellent customer service. I will definitely be purchasing more items from this company. Love this place! Highly recommend, here's why: Design -- beautiful, classic good looks. Clean lines, simple and functional. Quality -- my sofa is going on 10 years old and it still looks great. The cushions don't look smooshed & it's just as comfortable as day one. There's only slight fading on the fabric. The leather on my armchair is still supple and not dried & crackly. The wood furniture has also stood the test of time -- joints tight, drawers glide, hinges solid, finish unmarred -- this stuff will last you years and years. You almost wish it would break so you have an excuse to buy new stuff. Service -- wonderful. Prompt sales processing, courteous delivery. They place the furniture and clean up after themselves. I was amazed at the lengths the delivery guys went through to deliver a piece that was really too tight for the curving staircase to the third floor. But they did it, slow & steady, with no damage to the furniture or to the walls. All for $70 flat. We tipped generously of course. Price -- I think for the quality it's worth it. It's only slightly more expensive than Crate & Barrel but it looks better, imho, and certainly lasts longer based on experience. read more

Recently bought a sofa here. Talked to many different staff over the course of several weeks as i decided which sofa to buy, and all were extremely patient and helpful. I was disappointed that delivery was delayed by two weeks (the sofa took 8 weeks to produce instead of 6), but delivery was seamless. I really like the look of items in this store. The prices, however, are at a premium which is perfectly alright if you are buying premium quality items. I purchased several items from this store over the years. The things you do not use often last forever. I did, however, purchase my dining room set from the store and all 6 chairs are destroyed with the first one breaking after about 4 yrs and little by little the rest followed suit. Room and Board also wouldn't stand behind the products saying that they felt they lasted a reasonable amount of time. And by stand i mean they weren't willing to do anything at all. I would recommend purchasing similar products at less expensive stores if they are not going to last. I think even getting chairs at ikea would've lasted longer than these chairs. Overall just disappointed. I try to buy quality stuff. I go to good stores that sell good products and pay a premium for the added quality. read more

This is the best furniture store in the city. Yes, it's not cheap. But the customer service is unmatched. I have replaced the cushions on my Kendall couch (because my fat ass print had made a permanent indentation from sitting there 6 hours a day watching TV/playing video games) free of charge. Every staff member I've worked with has taken an interest in making the design of my home the best it can be and aligned with my style. Their selection is really great, I've pretty much furnished my entire home with R&B stuff. The Chilton table is amazing, it's part of their new collection. If you have a very modern design in your house, this is a wonderfully rustic addition to add contrast. The quality you get here is amazing, pretty much everything I've bought from R&B is still going very strong after 2 cross country moves and 5 years of use. I've been using R&B furniture for years and will definitely keep it as my main source of furniture. I definitely suggest checking it out! read more

After moving into a new home in December with our four month old baby, we were on the search for a sectional sofa for our living room. We originally went to Room & Board because we had heard about their excellent service and quality of product. The sales process for our sectional was very good, and we have nothing to complain about. The salesperson was not pushy, answered all of our questions, and really helped us pick what we thought was the perfect sectional for our space. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the delivery part of the process. We ordered our sectional on Dec. 15th and were told it would take a few months to process the order and deliver the product. We should expect our sofa by February 19th. Being excited about the sectional we decided we could wait the 9 weeks for the delivery and sit on the floor in our living room. Two weeks before the anticipated delivery date, we were received a call letting us know that there had been an error with the purchase order, and we would need to wait another month for delivery! After paying $4,500+ on a sofa, and sitting on the floor in our own house EVERY night for over two months with a baby, we were being told they made a mistake and would waive the $89 delivery fee, but there was nothing else they could do. We'd have to wait. I expected more from Room & Board, and wouldn't recommend going there, although I love their products. They do everything right to make the sale, but once it's made they don't care. I appreciate them waiving the delivery fee, but $89 doesn't really make a difference when you are sitting on your floor waiting for a sofa that you have spent read more

I really like the stuff they carry here... Though I've bought a few things here, and they all have some sort of "issue" quality-wise. I have 3 of their tall leaning bookshelves. Aesthetically they're very nice (and really that's why I bought them, since I didn't like the ones C&B had at the time, though now they have some that are nearly identical to R&B's). Unfortunately they've become slightly wobbly and there isn't any way to tighten them anymore. They're made out of real wood, but the wood isn't a very hard wood. I bought a frosted glass table.. Upon delivery, the delivery people were wearing latex gloves and only then did someone explain to me that you absolutely cannot touch the glass. They told me you can't touch the bottom (where the frosting is), OR the top. A glass table that you can't touch? That's a funny joke! I've since learned the top can be touched as it's a smooth surface, but any bit of contact with the bottom will permanently show. The table stand is one of their metal stands, which has some rubber bumpers on top of it between that and the glass. Even the little rubber bumpers left marks permanently, so every time the table gets moved the bumps have to be re-alligned so it doesn't get noticed as much. The movers (two different companies so far) seem to have a REAL tough time with the concept of not touching the bottom of the table. If only someone would've told me this when I bought the thing. They carry a lot of name brand stuff too, but I can usually find a better deal elsewhere online... (particularly w/ the Eames stuff they carry) 3.5 stars is probably most fair to them. read more

I really like their furniture and that it's made in America and each piece of furniture seems to have a story. What I don't like though is that they don't support their products after the sale. I bought a living room set from them which is now falling apart. I asked them if they could help me reupholster them and they said no. I realize furniture falls apart after a while but it would be nice if they could help you when this happens. They also never have any sales. If you're looking for furniture that will last about 10 years then this is a good place for you. Otherwise ymight want to try something more sturdy. read more

I'm not one that frequents higher end furniture stores, but when I moved into my first apartment by myself I knew I wanted a high-quality sofa that would last for years. I read reviews constantly and finally decided. I almost ordered the sofa with custom fabric online, but I am so glad I went in. Tess was brilliant, so nice and helpful. She didn't spend one minute pressuring me to add a chair or a table or anything else I didn't need. She found the fabric I wanted and really helped me picture the final product. When I was in the market for new bedroom furniture, I tried almost all of the popular mainstream stores and came up with little success. I figured I'd just stop the search and purchase something I wasn't in love with, then I found Chicago Room & Board while walking around the city and decided to give it a shot. I was thoroughly impressed with the vast selection of everything they had to offer and found exactly what I was looking for in a few minutes. The show rooms are very large and have 3 floors of various furniture and styles to select from. The sales person was very helpful with showing me different options and setting up my account and delivery. I purchased a full dresser, knight stand, and a large floor lamp, which was a little pricier than I expected, but it is higher end, more quality furniture. The delivery couldn't have been easier- the delivery gave me a 2 hour window and showed up on the front end. The delivery employees were extremely nice and quick with the set up of my dresser, knight stand, and floor lamp. In the future, I definitely won't be going anywhere else when I am in the market for anything furniture related. Overall, I am completely satisfied with my experience at Chicago Room & Board and recommend anyone looking for higher end furniture to check them out first, you won't be let down! read more

We found the several things we had hoped to see and buy. We also found a number of things we had ruled out on the Internet, but in person were stunning. His name was Carl Taylor, a delightful man, and he sent us home with tear sheets on our tentative selections so that we could make sure they were right. I am sooooo very happy to have found this store! I had looked for quite a long time for a mid-century sofa that was well made, firm yet comfortable and would last a long time. Kevin was outstanding to work with and was extremely patient and knowledgeable in helping me decide on the perfect fabric. Everyone in the store was very helpful and pleasant (I was in there pretty much every day for several months) and I never felt under pressure to purchase. I wish I had found them before i purchased all of my bedroom furniture! The quality is top notch and the delivery was outstanding as well. Although I'm certain purchasing from them online would be no problem, I find it best to purchase direct from a freestanding location whenever possible. You develop a relationship with whomever sold you the item (which can help later if there are problems) and it helps to keep that location in business and open so people can go try out the furniture for themselves. I have probably walked by Room and Board about 500 times and never gone in, yet when we began the hunt for new furniture it was not the first place to jump into my mind. I think part of that was the fact that from the outside it looks like a very very upscale, very very pricey store. Upon reading the reviews here and seeing what it was compared to I thought that seemed like it was in our price range and might as well give it a look-see since it is on my way home from work. It definitely was not nearly as expensive as I thought, comparable to crate and Barrel with some choices that not every person you know will have. They did not have exactly what we were looking for, but we were on a highly specific mission for a sectional. I liked the style of the furniture, not too modern not too old fashioned just young enough for me but not too cheap looking to stay in our house for a while. I liked that they had free water with their name on it, but I was incredibly parched upon arrival so that might have been the dehydration talking. All in all, I would go back on a less specific mission for other furniture. It looked like there would be plenty of things to match our current decor. read more

So, I trotted my happy little butt down to the store to see the model. Still perfect! I had to find a sales person to help me (grr), but once I did, she was very attentive. I ordered a bookcase and set of 4 barstools. The barstools arrived very quickly and perfect condition. The bookcase, a rolled steel version, did not. I sent it back because there was rust. I also sent back the 2nd and 3rd and 4th ones that were delivered to me. (But seriously, if you are paying $900 for a bookcase there should be no rust, right?) The 5th one arrived perfectly. A varied selection of anything you could want for your home - couches, rugs, lamps, desks, bookcases, etc. Many of their designs are in this "mid-century" style that's so hot right now, Hansel-style. Moreover, their pieces are very customizable. Each item comes in a standard color and you could have it delivered to your home in that color in about a week. Or, for some extra $, you could pick a different color or totally different fabric. But then you may not get your item for 2 months. They also let you customize tables, storage, and other pieces. The prices are a bit inconsistent but often a bit pricey. You can get a couch for not much more than you would pay at Crate & Barrel, but a rug could cost you a grand easy. Some of their "high design" items also will force you to dig deep into your pockets. The items all feel very well made - the dresser drawers glide smoothly, the couches are filled nicely - and no assembly! The sales staff are incredibly helpful and not at all pushy. We tried to stay loyal to one who helped us purchase a couch, but his associate closed our purchase, noting they don't work on commission. Lastly, their customer service is impeccable. We noticed a small defect 2 months after buying a sofa and they brought a brand new one to our house no questions asked, and took the old one back. No charge. Which is the other nice thing - delivery rates are fixed no matter how much you buy, so if you can afford to buy a few things at once, you'll save. The delivery men are also very polite and prompt. They give you a two hour delivery window and all 3 times they've come in the first 30 minutes of the block. My girlfriend has her eye on many other things in the store, so I'm sure we'll buy there again. read more
