To be honest, I've only been to Harwin once before this day. IYKYK. It's a place to get a deal on prom dresses and Indian/Pakistani traditional attire among other things. My friends and I had our fairly regular brunch date, and someone mentioned going to Harwin after to try on lehengas in preparation for our friend's mehndi party. One of my friends in the group was apprehensive about shopping, but we ended up going. The future bride took us to Roop Sari Palace and showed us the way including the aunties that helped us find dresses in our size. It's basically by bra size in inches. There were so many to choose from that it was a little bit overwhelming at first. Everything was just so beautiful. I literally wanted a couple of them and was torn between two before I settled on one. I must've tried 8-9 different ones which aren't that easy to get on/off. We spent 3 hours there. I even saw some in the kids section that I thought would be fine so that I wouldn't have to hem the long lehenga skirt. I actually didn't try any from the kids section though. Lol. There are only 2 dressing rooms that are small. You could barely hang up 2 or 3 pieces because the skirts are so full, and some have a petticoat. We and other young ladies shared them going in and out at times and asking for our phones or shoes. It felt like a fashion show similar to the movie 27 Dresses where she tries on all of her bridesmaids dresses. There was one particular auntie who was helpful and brought us more lehenga designs we might like, tighten the skirt or plete/drape the dupatta. Mine was on sale for a fair price considering all the beading/sequins, and our bride-to-be friend did some price bargaining for our other friend. I had to get mine altered since the lehenga was too long, and I lost so much weight after purchasing it 5 months ago. I took it to a tailor, but they do offer tailoring here. I didn't want to drive all the way back here just for that. It's a beautiful, traditional lehenga, and I enjoyed wearing it at the mehndi party and got many compliments. I hope I get to wear it again or at least pieces of it for different occasions. I'm told there are plenty of other stores nearby like this one, so I'm sure you're bound to find something you like that fits your fancy. read more

Wow, what a desi shopping shop! It's a massive place for desi clothes and accessories for everyone, including brides and grooms. One shop, and you have it all. Today, I was shopping for matching jewelry for the upcoming wedding in Virginia. I took pictures of my outfits, but please take the shirt with you, or Instead of pictures, make a video of the outfit so the color of the fabric looks the same. Two people spend at least two hours with me in the jewelry section. Mumtaz and Madhavi are super kind and very professional in their field. They were helpful and did not push me to buy the stuff like other places. The whole time they were smiling and helped me with kindness. I was treated very well here by all the ladies who came to my aid with selecting what I needed. I needed something for my son's wedding and I had to try a lot of things on to see what was the best. They brought lots of selection to the dressing room and I did finally find the one I love the best. Despite everything being on sale, I would not recommend this place for people to visit. Unless you don't care for customer service then go here for the prices. My family and I came here to look for some items for my wedding and the lady that helped us was very rude. She was basically throwing the items on the table for us to hurry up and pick. Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous saris. My fam's been going to Roop Sari for years. My sis actually got one of her wedding saris from RSP. It's a tad more "pricey" than some other hole-in-the-wall boutiques, but you have sooooo many options with their massive selection, so chances are, you'll find something you love. They also have men's and children's wear, jewelry, purses, shoes and some "casual-ware" for non-wedding events. They have sales racks, and you can even negotiate with a sales associate, who will be your little "personal shopper" your entire visit. If you're new to South East Asian clothing (eg: have an event to attend), don't be nervous. These ladies can help you pick out the perfect ensemble from head to toe. They love it. My friend recommended me to come here for saris and I was totally not disappointed! So many styles, colors, and gorgeous fabrics used in every piece of clothing! I walked in and all of the staff members were busy so I just walked around and looked at all the dresses and clothes on the racks until someone came to me and asked if I needed help. I told her I needed to find some saris to wear to a wedding and she told me she would help me as soon as she was finished with another customer. It didn't take long at all! I was probably in there 30 minutes max and came out with 3 saris. The lady helping me was so nice and taught me how to put everything on and told me how to alter certain things if I felt like I needed some room in the chest and arm area. She even helped me pick out some colors I never knew looked so well on me! AHHHHHH I told my friend that he had to drag me out of there before I bought the whole store. There were many dresses that looked beautiful but there was absolutely no customer service. I was not impressed by any of the team members that offered to help me; yes, they offered to assist but all it seemed they wanted to do is sell me dresses above my budget even though I mentioned quite a few times the amount I wanted to spend. The team members were speaking a different language, which is absolutely fine, but I find it disrespectful when they would talk among each other after every single thing I say- seemed like they were commenting about me and my not having knowledge of dresses (which I don't and why I needed their assistance). They may have not been doing that, but gave the impression they were. After about 10 minutes of having someone follow me and not assist me other than direct me to expensive dresses; I decided to walk out to go to another store who actually listened to what I needed and assisted me. read more

I had an Indian wedding to attend for a friend. I was excited and yet a little worried about finding the proper attire to wear. I had never worn a saree or sari (take your pick on the spelling), and didn't feel comfortable borrowing one, so my friend suggested this place. It seems this is their new location. Upon walking in, the first thing I noticed was how welcoming and helpful the ladies that work here are, its family owned and operated after all. The place is quite large; I was somewhat overwhelmed with the selection and tons of displays. So many bright colors and saree's lined up one after the other. I was able to find several I loved, I felt like a princess or goddess. The gowns are so intricate and detailed, almost made me want to marry in one myself . The colors and designs are just amazing.I found the perfect saree, and it was on sale! It was a steal! I received many compliments at the wedding. Too bad I can't really wear my saree anywhere else as of the moment, or it just may be the perfect excuse to visit India, Bangladesh, Nepal, or Malaysia. Hmm... Anyhow, I came back here again today for a different reason with some co-workers. We needed to make togas for an upcoming themed office party, and I remembered seeing that they sold beautiful fabric. The lady that assisted us was lovely and so patient. We were all in shock at how cheap some of this beautiful fabric was, such as $3 a yard. My two co-workers and I walked out with the fabric we each needed and were pleased with the great bargain. They also sell jewelry and headpieces of of all sorts. I bought a cashmere scarf for less than $5. Most places in Harwin are known to be cheap, but only a few carry high quality stuff. This store is a diamond in the rough. I had a really great experience overall buying clothes for my family for my wedding here. The woman helping us was really helpful and showed me a lot of things in the colors and styles I was interested in. She let us use a dressing room in the back when the front was very crowded. She held clothes for us and got them altered very quickly even as we went to go get lunch for the day and come back later. They have a great selection in many many different colors and styles. Beautiful lehengas for any occasion, ghararas, salwars, anarkalis, and a great selection of men's clothes as well which is often difficult to find at Indian clothing stores. Only one star off because of one of the ladies at the jewelry area - she was helpful but really really agressive in an incredibly rude and unappealing way. I did not want to interact with her at all. I came from Dallas twice, once to buy my bridal gown and the second to buy my fiancé's sherwani. The first time I came with my mom (both Latinas) and the sales rep was very pushy and rushing me to purchase. It made my experience extremely stressful because not only am I trying to buy my bridal dress, one that I like, but also trying to learn my fiancé's cultura (Indian). The first time I thought it might have been part of the culture, but I noticed that with other ladies of the same culture they were taking their time. It is almost as if they do not want females of other cultures to enter their store. Today when I came with my fiancé, they were taking their time with him however when I would ask questions, they would disregard me entirely.I would also like to note that the first time I notice that the people cleaning and fixing items were Latinos and they were being treated rudely. I really wanted to give them the benefit of doubt and assumed it was because they were busy that day. Due to the fact that in Dallas there is a lack of variety in Indian/ sari dresses, I decided to look for my bridesmaid saris. I found one that I loved but when I saw the sales rep throwing the bag at the Latina employ and almost hitting her face as if she was a dog, made me extremely upset and I decided not to purchase anything else. My Fiance, my mom, and I spent almost $2,000 before I saw their treatment towards their employees. I was so close to spending an additional $2000+ for my 6 bridesmaid but when I saw the lack of human decency I decided to leave. I HOPE they learn how to treat customers and even more importantly the back bone of their store that keep their store looking clean. I know nothing about shopping for Indian clothing, but I think we got a good deal on some beautiful clothes for a friend's wedding. For us newbies, this store was pretty overwhelming, but I enjoyed looking at all the beautiful beadwork and stitching. My friend needed a sari and an anarkali suit for a wedding, and her budget was $200 for everything. From the very minute we walked in, we were personally helped by a nice older woman who directed us to the racks that had appropriate sizes and prices for our budget. We also had strict color requirements as dictated by the bride, and she helped us find items that fit those needs. We found the anarkali suit first and she knocked the price down to $99 from $119. This suit included the top/dress, the matching pants and the scarf. Next we moved on to the saris. They have never ending piles of saris in every color of the rainbow. Our personal shopper helped my friend find a gorgeous sari that was already sized to fit her. She also assisted us in how to wrap a sari. The sari included the cropped blouse and the sari itself. The pants in a coordinating color were an additional $5. She was very helpful in offering prices on alterations for everything (shortening the sleeves of a suit, pre-stitching a sari, letting out the waist of a sari top, tightening the sleeves of a suit) but we opted to find things that fit off the rack. Once we got to the register, the man knocked another few dollars off the anarkali suit, which brought the total for the suit and sari to $190. I tried to negotiate a little more at this point, but they wouldn't budge. On our way out, they also gave us a few packs of bindis. Overall, this was a great experience in unfamiliar territory, and my friend and I both thought it was easier and faster than we expected. read more

Roop is one of the few Indian clothing retailers in Hillcroft. While they have a wide selection, much of it is outdated. They have newer, younger styles as well, but in limited quantity and only few sizes. On top of that, the mark-up on items is beyond acceptable. A pair of cookie cutter foam and stiff cardboard shoes that aren't shaped for a right or left foot are $25. Seriously, $25 can get you a bargain pair of leather dress shoes at Payless or Ross or even Kohl's. In addition, the costume jewelry comes with missing pieces that they fill in with stray "jewels" and crazy glue. Please make sure you double check their work, as they failed to fill one empty spot, and put in a few pieces in at odd angles with deficient glue. I made sure to check and had to ask the attendant to re-do her work. No apology or kind word for the shoddy work, just a grimace and more glue. Roop is well-known in the Hillcroft market, and really has little competition. Perhaps that's why they can get by with overcharging, but it still doesn't excuse the deficient customer service and attitude. Good service can keep customers happier to come back and overpay the next time. We came for a few outfits, but we also got a dose of poor attitude from the staff at the register, and a bad taste in our mouths from our experience. read more

"Yay! I'm a fan." My friend and I went shopping for fabric in Bellaire and arrived just as our chosen place was closing, so we got on Yelp and looked up Fabric and found this gem. Parking is a zoo. Good luck. We walked in and our eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning. So many pretty things! My friend high-fives me. Staff were a mix of helpful and what-are-you-doing-here looks and "Can I help you?" with a suspicious eye when we would touch a fabric and say how pretty it was. One lady laughed at me, but whatever. I thought she'd be used to seeing tall brunettes, living in Houston, but I guess not. The woman at the jewelry counter was helpful and very pleasant to chat with. She found a few replacement gems to fix the necklace I wanted so I could be at maximum bling level. I was on a bargain-hunting mission. I succeeded. I got a three-piece sari (it needed hem work, which I didn't mind doing at home), choli, 1 set of bangles, and sari headdress/necklace set. All for under $100. I love Saris and this place offers a decent selection. I am not sure if they are the best quality as I only purchased one here for fun. I love that they display some of the saris and your are able to pick and choose. Also, the sales people sometimes help you look for anything in particular that you may choose. They are a bit pricey but I hear that most saris are anyway. I dont wear saris for special occassions just really because I love the colors, bling, and sequins. While the prices are not bad for bridal outfits, sometimes the customer service is so-so. Salim (the owner) was helpful, but the other lady in the bridal area was not. I told her my wedding was in May and she told me I wasn't supposed to be shopping for my bridal lehenga until February. Why would I start that late?? I explained to her that not only do I like to do things early, I have a heavy travel schedule that REQUIRES me to start early. After explaining very assertively, she finally let me try on some lehengas (she previously refused). Next day, I took my fiance with me and she was super sweet (because Salim was there, no doubt). Salim told me to try on whatever I wanted, despite knowing what my wedding date was. Wow, what a difference between the two. However, I will say this, I was told that to make an Ekta Solanki designer lehenga, it would cast $1000 because there was no stone work on it. I disagree. I've seen many pictures of this lehenga, and I don't think the owner and I saw eye to eye about this particular lehenga. What made me more nervous was that the girl there told me that they don't do sketches prior to placing a custom order. Just provide them with a picture and they'll do it. That's all. I'm a very thorough, detailed person and that just wasn't going to work for me. I rather pay more and have a sketch there showing exactly what the replica will look like/what they will use to make it. While Almas Tejani is MUCH more expensive, I feel like she was more professional. Roop has good stuff, don't get me wrong, but they operate too much like desis. read more

Ok so I don't like everything Roop Sari has but honestly you can always find some good outfits if you look hard enough. There are a lot of options and something for everyone. I think it's the best place because I've found wedding outfits to casual wear to outfits for gifts and all of the above. You just have to look around and spend a little time. Their bangles are also really nice, that's the only jewelry I ever bought from here. Aside from the clothing if you ever want to get your clothes alteration I wouldn't recommend this place. The lady didn't do such a good job and I was disappointed. It's was very messy stitching and had to be re done. That's the only downside I've had. read more

I would never ever go back to this place. I purchased some bangles she packed it up and I get home and she gave me two different sizes. Then I bought a dress and they took me to the lady that does the alterations. She looked at the dress and didn't even mark or write down anything and said okay I'll have it ready in one week. Thai is just to shorten the dress and make the top smaller. It threw me off that she did not even take the measurement, but I trusted her. I went back to pick it up and she had everything wrong. The dress was super loose like she never even did anything. Then as I look closer stitches were coming off. I told her I needed the dress on Saturday (I went to pick it up Thursday) she said her machine was broken so she couldn't fix it until the next day. So I put the dress again and was hoping she would take measurements this time. No, she said she knew what she was doing and did not take any measurements again! This was a disaster and headache.
