This review is not for the entire park, but just for one trail. We parked in a lot across the road from the Callaway General Store and Café. We asked them about parking (no fee) and were returning there for lunch later anyway. We then hiked up Rt 190 about 50 yards and found the trail crossing. We opted to do the one on the left - I think it was Bentley? The one on the right was the Pine Mountain trail. The trail was a nice hike through the woods but never more than 200 yards from a main road. We followed it to a junction and turned right so as to begin the loop back. Since it had taken longer than planned already, we hiked back along Route 190 instead of another trail. In total, it was about 2.1 miles and took us from 10:45 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.! The trail was hilly with a lot of rocks so the pace was slow. I enjoyed the hike, though. read more

FDR State Park near Warm Springs, Georgia. Very nice state park with lots of nearby attractions to visit including Calloway Gardens and FDR's Little Whitehouse. The small town of Warm Springs had several little shops that were nice to walk through, even found some unique Christmas gifts. The highlight of downtown Warm Springs was the Bullock House Restaurant for their country cooking lunch buffet, a great bargain at $12.50 for the good food they serve. The park has several campsite areas, I believe were numbered as Campgrounds 1 through 5. The check-in building in a large CCC flagstone structure with a nice camp shop, but don't miss the scenic overlook out behind the building. Most rv camp sites we rode by were very wooded with good shade and seemed to be level. Each area has its own bathhouse. The one in our area was clean and offered two family restroom/shower room combinations in addition to the standard women's' and men's sides. Campsites in Campground 1 with numbers starting in the 100's are on or near a small lake. They did have some paddle boats but I didn't see any being rented so they could have been discontinued for the Winter. We did see several people fishing from the lakeshore. A Georgia license is required for fishing and the camp shop had a "Bait for Sale" sign. The CCC built Liberty Bell flagstone pool was also drained and closed for the season. A handful of the sites in Campground 1 are directly in the lake and some of those have full hookups. We were lucky to be in one of those lakefront full hookup sites. The park has several hiking trails but bikes are not allowed on them. It is a short drive to Dowdell's Knob, an overlook that FDR used to enjoy visiting and picnicing at when he was in the area. The foliage was still colorful but past its peak when we visited in mid-November. We enjoyed our stay in one of the best campsites we have had in a state park this year. read more

One of our favorite GA State Parks! Great pool (additional cost to camping) which was built by CCC in the 30's. Lake for kayaking and canoeing. New bathrooms as well as great new retaining walls and erosion control. Everything about this park says "we care." Lots of trails for walking and practically next door to Callaway Gardens, FDR Little White House, and Wild Animal Safari. Truly a destination vacation. One complaint: i like to go barefoot and the camping sites are cover/paved with mid-sized rocks and its painful to walk on. I cant imagine tent camping here. read more

This is our 5th time here and we love it just as much as when we first came here 25 years ago. We stayed in cabin 5 this time which is on a road all by itself and we enjoyed getting up every morning to have coffee on the screened porch and watch the sun come up. My husband and I are simple quiet people and this park offers. a lot of quiet peace and reflecting time. Such beauty everywhere! The cabin was clean and cold, the way we like it, even tho it wasnt real hot weather yet. I love the history of the area, my Dad was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps and I often wonder if he worked on this property. Right around the corner is Warm Springs where FD Roosevelt ran the country from at the Little White House as it was called during a lot of the WW2 war read more

We did not camp or do any activities. We visited in November drove through the park and enjoyed the fall leaves. There are many overlooks to enjoy the scenery in the valley below. The trading post has clean bathrooms, live bait for fishing, gift shop and limited groceries. I'd love to return and explore the cabin camping. read more

Liberty Bell Pool has great mineral springs water but the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting on a Wednesday we were here. For a $5 parking fee plus a $7 entrance fee per person, you would think they could afford to pay someone to spend an hour or two to clean the restrooms....I can't imagine what condition the bathrooms are in on a Saturday. No outside food or drinks allowed into the pool area and the food sold in the cafe is subpar....Plan accordingly. read more

This is real hiking. You can choose different parking lots/starting points to hike portions of the Pine Mountain Trail. This is a large park, at just over 9,000 acres, over 40 miles of well-kept and marked hiking trails, 23 of them being the Pine Mountain Trail. DO NOT RELY ON YOUR PHONE FOR A MAP. For some reason, you have to BUY a map. They don't have, like, free brochures like at other parks. And I couldn't even find a good set of PICTURES of the trails when googling. You can take a pic at the start of the trail, but what they want you to is download an app, and they also suggest an interactive google map option that shows where you on on the map... but you aren't going to have service when you need it. They really need to update the marked signs, at points in the trails where you have a choice. All the signs should have the distance and direction to the nearest parking lot. It doesn't help to tell me how long the loop is that I'm on... I need to know how much I have left. In either direction. and not to the start of the trail, but to where my car is parked. The lady at the gift shop must not do hiking. She said that the Dowdell Knob loop was considered "moderate." My 4 year old hiked the 4+ miles without difficulty. Even though I was disappointed with the map situation, I'm not taking away a star because I really should have just bought one, and the park, the campgrounds, the lookouts, the hiking... this is a lovely place worth visiting time and time again. read more

So I've never been camping in my life but decided to glamp! I reserved a cabin at Roosevelt State Park and so happy I did. The views are absolutely breathtaking. The cabin itself is very clean. It looks like it has been updated, not like the pictures you see on the website. Nice and spacious kitchen area and huge comfortable bed. The fireplace works and definitely a must! Great place to relax and have camp fires also, wonderful trails for hiking. If you would rather wake up have a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery then go inside and watch cable then this place if for you. Lol. A few minutes from the cabin there's a park and work out outdoor area, camp ground. There is also a small convenient store for perishables and wood but I bought everything with me so didn't really need to shop other than to buy wood. I will definitely be returning. read more

F.D. Roosevelt is by far the largest State Park in Georgia. At 9,049 acres, none come close, including the next two largest: Hard Labor Creek State Park at 5,804 acres and Smithgall Woods State Park at 5,664 acres. It is nearly three times the size of popular Cloudland Canyon which is fourth largest at 3,488 acres. THE AREA We spent Labor Day weekend at the newly opened Great Wolf Lodge water park resort and searched nearby things to do. I was instantly sold after googling images of FDR State Park and seeing the stunning views from Dowdell's Knob inside the park. If you are not familiar with Georgia's topography, the state is divided into five regions. They are: * The Appalachian Plateau * The Ridge and Valley region * The Blue Ridge region * The Piedmont region * and The Coastal Plains The Blue Ridge, Appalachian Plateau and Ridge & Valley regions are some of the greatest areas in the state for scenic views and fabulous waterfalls. These areas combined are considered the "North Georgia Mountains" and are part of the Appalachian Mountain chain that extends for almost 2,000 miles from Newfoundland in Canada all the way to central Alabama. It cuts across the top left corner of Georgia and gives us privilege to the tallest waterfall in the south (Amicalola Falls) as well as the gorgeous Tallulah Gorge. As you slide downstate, the mountains turn into rolling foothills, which is where Metropolitan Atlanta is located. This region is called the Piedmont Plateau which again stretches along the southeast side of the Appalachian Mountains from Central Alabama all the way to New Jersey. According to science, the Piedmont region is the remains of several ancient mountain chains that have since been eroded away when North America broke away from Africa. Sediment deposits from the higher elevations have settled in the area, essentially smoothing out the lower lying areas. You can really see these deposits clearly at Providence Canyon in Lumpkin, GA. Although FDR State Park is still in the Piedmont region, it's really close to the beginning of the Coastal Plains region, the largest and FLATTEST section of the state (which eventually connects with Florida). I say all of that to say it was surprising to see rolling views like this so far south of Atlanta, where you expect it to be much flatter. HISTORY It is said that President Franklin D. Roosevelt sometimes picnicked and pondered world affairs from Dowdell's Knob. He frequented the area often because he was attracted to the natural warm springs which seemed to give him temporary relief from his polio. He even built a home here that is often referred to as 'The Little White House'. It was here that the President died on March 29, 1945 @ 3:35pm. He was the only US president to ever be elected to FOUR terms of office. FINAL THOUGHTS There are plenty of trails for the avid hiker here, 42 miles to be exact. There are also 2 lakes, 21 cottages, 109 tent, trailer & RV campsites, 2 group shelter, group & pioneer campgrounds, playgrounds, birding, fishing, geocaching, horseback riding, Jon boat, kayak & canoe rentals. But the best attraction to me is the view from Dowdell's Knob, which requires no hiking!!! Just drive right up to it! Also, the view from behind the Visitor's Center is nearly as fantastic if you don't care to drive the 5 miles to see Dowdell's Knob, so don't miss it. 2018/47 read more

A brilliant day with nothing going on called for a visit to FDR to explore some of its miles of hiking trails. This morning's excursion was the Wolfden Loop, a 6.7 mile trail with 5 of it along the park's Pine Mountain Trail. I got there bright and early coming in from the Warm Springs side of the park & parked at the small lot located at "Mile 18" of the Pine Mountain trail. This is where the Wolfden Loop begins, and signs are posted to make sure that even habitually lost people like me know where I need to go. The Pine Mountain trail is clearly blazed too, so it's an easy walk through the woods. The first couple of miles are basically "I'm in the woods" kinds of views, pleasant enough but nothing that really stands out. But as you start to descend into a glen (hmm, is "glen" the right word?) you see a giant loblolly pine and a small stream runs by it. You'll be crossing back and forth this stream a few times over the next mile or two, sometimes with a boardwalk, sometimes with a little boulder-hopping. The highlight of this part (and the highlight of the whole loop) is a series of small waterfalls. They're not large - the biggest one might be 5 feet - but they're pretty and made this an enjoyable time. At Mile 23 of the Trail, you leave the Pine Mountain trail and take the Beaver Marsh/White Candle Trails to make the Wolfden Loop, um, loop. (The signage notating "Wolfden Loop" disappears at this point oddly enough.) I say Beaver Marsh/White Candle because they intertwine with each other - it's a little confusing without a map but follow any signs for Beaver Marsh unless its not mentioned - otherwise follow White Candle. Better yet, just pull up a photo of the trail map from the website and disregard this inevitably confusing paragraph. Both trails are enjoyable changes from what you've just done - Beaver Marsh takes you through an open field of young pines, and White Candle which concludes the loop gives you some mountain glimpses of the surrounding lands. An enjoyable 2.5 hours that I would call moderate, not only for the distance but for the stream crossing. I finished up my time in the park by visiting the celebrated Dowdell Knob, because I know that's what FDR would have wanted me to do. It's a great lookout into the area, and very peaceful when you're the only one out there. A quick drop by the Visitor's Center before I left, though there isn't anything like a museum there which is a bit of a surprise given the park's namesake. But Warm Springs has its share of FDR museums so if you're interested in the man you can explore more there. Otherwise if it's a good hike you're after, you know what to do. read more

First time doing one of the hiking trails, started on the mountain creek trail and thought it would loop us around to our little parking lot, but it didn't so we ended up at one of the camping areas that met the delano trail. So, we had to backtrack back the way we came. The free map in the visitor box was a little confusing, suggest paying for a better map, that probably would've helped us out a lot! read more

I don't think I can say enough fine things about FDR State Park. I have lived in Georgia for some time but have only begun discovering the state park system this year. While we have been to others and camped in a couple of different styles (pop-up, 5th wheel, etc) this past experience at FDR was hands down the best. From the moment we drove up to the Rangers Station the view, the cleanliness, and the overall mood was so refreshing. It was hard to believe that we were so close to several larger towns/cities. The fresh air of the mountains was wonderful. Checking in was a breeze as our reservation had been confirmed, the front desk host said he was expecting us, and the direction to the sites was spot on. We quickly headed over to the camping area and settled in to spot 101; the very first on the first loop. With a lakeside view and few neighbors (most likely because of it being in August and the weekend of the first week back to school) it felt like we owned the place. The ONLY bad part of the site was that we did not have a grey water drain. We knew there was no brown water hook up so that was not a surprise. Within 20 minutes of setting up we were welcomed by the camp host who we saw several times during the weekend tooling around by golf cart to pick up trash, welcome newcomers, check on us, etc. It was great customer service without feeling like we were being "spied on." The rest of the weekend found us renting a row boat (row boats, canoes, and kayaks, were available at the ranger station for rent), heading over to Liberty Pool (a short bike ride but a bit challenging with its up hill trek), driving to the Little White House (although at $10 a head we opted not to go in), cooking out, feeding the ducks, and hiking quite a bit. With access to Pine Mountain Trail we were excited to take in some beautiful scenery one step at a time. The trails were well maintained and seemingly endless. Each bend in the road seemed to be another entry point or trailhead. It was fantastic! The restroom/shower facilities (one older and two newer) were all clean (I used them all!) and well stocked. I never once saw anyone cleaning them so I was amazed that the TP roll was always full! The floor was not soaked and the bugs were at a minimum. In fact, even the soap dispensers at the sink were filled. We will definitely be returning to FDR to do the whole Pine Mountain Trail and earn our patch with honor! read more

We live in Florida but have been to most of the Georgia State Parks. This is not one of our absolute favorites...but is still a nice park. This park gets high marks for lots of hiking trails, and scenic spots. It is also very close to Pine Mountain and Warm Springs, so lots of places to shop and eat nearby. There is definitely a lot of things to do in the area. We will certainly be back. read more

That awkward moment when your fiancé asks if there's anything you would change about the cottage, and you answer, "Mmm maybe it would be nice if it had a hairdryer." Then you go to sleep and there is a BAT FLYING AROUND YOUR ROOM. How quickly priorities change. This review is mostly geared toward cottage 10. We got to FD Roosevelt state park, excited to see the upgrades to the cottages that we'd been reading so much about. Per other reviews, we booked a cottage near the lake. Check-in was a breeze, they gave us a parking pass and directed us on our way. We unlocked the cottage, and it was nice. Screened porch overlooking the lake, decent size family room and fully stocked kitchen, a bedroom with a queen bed and a bathroom. It had directv, which we didn't expect, so that was a pleasant surprise. The floor was a bit dirty and the smoke alarm was chirping a little. We didn't mind the floor too much, and figured we would call about the smoke detector during regular office hours the next day. Around 10 or 11 pm, we were watching TV in the living room and heard a thud that sounded like it came from the other room. We passed it off to being in a new place in the wilderness, and didn't think much of it. We finally decided to retire around midnight. Got in bed and turned off the lights. As we're about to fall asleep, we heard a similar thud to what we did earlier; my fiancé said he thought something was flying around the room (at this point I thought it was a bug), he turns on his flashlight, and a bat has flung itself into the fireplace - maniacally flying around. We ran out of the room, closed the door and called the emergency line. Left a voicemail on the emergency line, stating our situation. Didn't hear anything for 30 minutes, I call back and a lady answers the phone. She says she can't get anyone out until 8:30 am the next day (umm what I thought this was an emergency line?). In the interim another ranger calls back, says he'll be there soon to take care of it. Thank goodness for him, he came and caught the bat. He asked us to call during regular office hours, so they could check out how the bat got in. What a great ranger. Sidebar: Everyone asked if we left the door open, and no one actually apologized for a bat in our cottage. The next day we called, and another ranger found a hole. He patched it up. We decided to leave early, because I was just at the NOPE point. The front desk refunded us for a day in the form of a gift card. That was extremely nice and unexpected. Still no said the they were sorry, their reactions seemed like this was par for the course. It was also frustrating that everyone assumed we were the ones responsible for letting the bat in, as they kept asking if we left a door open. The redeeming qualities of this experience were 1. We were refunded in the form of a gift card (we didn't ask for anything like this) and 2. The scenery was very pretty. TL;DR There was a bat in cottage 10. We checked out early and got a partial refund. Not ideal customer service. Park is pretty. read more

Beautiful state park! My family came for a family reunion. We rented an air conditioned meeting room that was perfect for our family lunch and dinner. We had our own bathrooms and a small kitchen. We catered most of the food and they had no problem finding us. We had plenty of parking. It was near the campgrounds and well marked. There was also a playground right there for the kids to play on and a storage room where the chairs and tables go that the teenagers claimed for playing cards. On the drive into the park there are several overlooks to pull over and take in the amazing view. Lots of camp sites and several of them are on the water. They also have cabins for rent. Half our family stayed here and half our family stayed in Callaway Gardens. I would love to come back here in the fall when it is cooler and tent camp and hike. We go to a different state park every year and this is probably now my favorite. read more

We had a wonderful time during our stay at F.D. Roosevelt State Park. The Park is maintained very well and the staff are extremely helpful and courteous. If you enjoy hiking and being outdoors, this is the place for you. NO mountain bikes are allowed on the trails, but you still can get a pretty good work out cycling on the paved Park roads. Fishing is allowed on Lake Delanor. The Cottages are clean and comfortable. Just see it for yourself! read more

Lovely place to visit. Pine Mountain and Calloway Gardens are right there. We visited the Little White House and museum because we had the time. We walked around the lake (it didn't take long). My girlfriend and I went for a long weekend. We rented a cottage on the lake for two nights, arriving Saturday and departing Monday. We went canoeing and hiking, and the canoe rental was for a reasonable rate, but the lake is not very big. Still, it was nice to be on the water. We hiked one of the shorter trails and made it back to our cottage as it got dark. The trail was nice, and we got some good photos, but the last part requires three creek crossings with no footbridge. Our cottage had a fire pit and a separate outside grill, and we used both. The cottage was nice, with a bedroom, living area, kitchenette (stove, fridge, sink, and microwave), and bathroom. The staff at the park office are friendly and helpful, but the paraphernalia they sell is a bit expensive. There is a Family Dollar about 10 minutes away in Pine Mountain, and a Piggly Wiggly about 30 minutes away in Manchester for supplies and groceries. Overall, the views are great, the hiking is just challenging enough, and it's nice to be able to go out on the water. The prices are pretty good too. It was a great place to get away for a couple days. And we saw an armadillo! read more

I was very impressed with this state park. Stayed In a 40ft camp site for 3 nights. Weather was great for mid November. Facilities were clean and sufficient. Rangers and staff were friendly. Best part of my experience was the superb hiking trails. There is a nice variety of trails throughout the park and the ones I ventured on were all fairly flat and easy. Franklin Delano Roosevelt State park is easily the best state park I have been too in the State of Georgia. The park encompasses over 9,000 acres making it not just my favorite one, but the state of Georgia's largest state park. What a number of people mentioned on our visit here was that they were completely shocked to find rolling mountains 80 miles southwest of Atlanta. A life-size sculpture of the president now welcomes visitors to the overlook. The park boasts several nice amenities which a ranger told us were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Those projects include cottages, which we rented for our stay for the weekend, and the Liberty Bell Swimming Pool which is naturally fed by cool springs. The ranger also told us that during the 1920's, President Roosevelt came here to swim in naturally warm springs because they offered relief from polio. Also located nearby is FDR's Little White House Historic Site invites visitors to see his modest home, a museum and the pools that first drew him here, and if I'm not mistaken is also the place he died during the his fourth term in office. Here is some of the info on our stay! A large group of us converged on the park for a wedding, my group rented cottage 6 for the weekend. The check in procedure was super easy, we walked into the park office, and were able to check in at 3 o'clock, which was an hour early. We had to pay for a parking pass which I was a little perturbed by but that was the only dark mark of the weekend! The cottage numbering system is a little convoluted, but use the map they give you when you check in and you won't have any trouble. The cabin had a full kitchen with microwave and electric stove, full size refrigerator, as well as a sink and garbage disposal. If you need specific cooking utensils, I would recommend bringing them but the basics are there. The living room has a large wood burning fireplace and mantle, as well as a comfortable couch. There is also a television but we never even turned it on. The bedroom has a queen sized bed and large standup dresser and was surprisingly comfortable. The bathroom has a large shower, with decent water pressure, a single sink vanity, and a full sized toilet. The AC takes a minute to cool the place down so keep that in mind when you arrive. The group shelter is amazing, lots of storage, running water, dumpster nearby and ample room for any event of around 100 people. There is a kitchen and the park has tables and chairs available on site for you and your guests. The park has adequate signage for you to get to where you are going, ample dumpsters and trash cans, charcoal grills, and even has horseback riding and a number of hiking trails. This is such a cool park and without a doubt it comes with my highest recommendation! read more

We stayed in cabin 18. Very nice cabin. While we did limited cooking it is worth noting that they indicate full kitchen they actually have limited cooking utensils- no spatula. Absolutely loved the fireplace. Also they do have a tv and satellite dish which is not listed when we made reservations. Very nice park but we didn't do much hiking as it rained for a few days. read more

The worst backcountry camping in the State park system. This is the largest park in the State with 9600 acres yet they limit camping to one short 6 mile loop with three "general use / no privys" campsites you cannot reserve. If your idea of fun is to have the Park book up to 20 strangers to share the site with you without any kind of bathroom, this place is for you! But wait it gets better. This sole backcountry camping loop is shoved into a park boundary corner next to a highway so you'll be lulled to sleep by the sound of truck traffic all night long, and if you're lucky a few cargo transport planes will fly low overhead at 2 a.m. waking you up. Nothing like hauling 40 pounds of supplies two miles into the woods in order to feel like you're sleeping next to I285 down by Atlanta Airport. This park spends all their time and efforts maintaining features from the 1930s and isn't making the park useful for modern needs, there is simply no excuse for not offering private backcountry campsites like all the other State parks offer. With 9600 acres there should be at least five more backcountry camping trail loops around the entirety of the park for a variety of PRIVATE backcountry camping experiences far away from highway noises and flight patterns. read more

I give this a 5-star rating not because it is one of my favorites to camp (although I will say that if you get a camping site on Delanor Lake it is a very nice spot with trees for hammock hanging, fire rings for grilling and camp fires, and a comfort station), but i give it a 5-star for the amazing trail running that this park has to offer. The Pine Mountain Trail had a bit of everything you want in a trail... elevation, technical in some areas, mountains, overlooks, waterfalls, creek crossings, and wonderful wildlife and foliage! And it isnt some 4-5 mile trail. It is a long 23-mile trail with additional trails that create loops throughout the whole trail which is great for the trail runner looking to get a bunch of miles without having to find a ride back to your car! To be fair: beautiful park and very friendly staff. However, this place will nickel and dime you to death. No swimming allowed in the park lake because they want to funnel you to the Liberty Bell Pool which charges a daily per person admission even though we just spent over a thousand dollars on a couple of cabins for the weekend. In addition to that, we even had to BUY parking passes to go to the pool. I have never experienced anything like that in a GA State Park. I expected Calloway to rake me across the coals, but not a damn state park for goodness sake!! Even the paddleboat rentals are $25 an hour. Let that sink in. TWENTY FIVE dollars an hour. If you are on a budget, this is not the place for you. read more
